Mapping Seattle’S Cultural Assets: Using Data From The Arts Ecosystem Research Project To Inform Future Arts Leaders, Stefanie Fatooh Jan 2022

Mapping Seattle’S Cultural Assets: Using Data From The Arts Ecosystem Research Project To Inform Future Arts Leaders, Stefanie Fatooh

Mapping Seattle's Cultural Assets

The mapping of cultural assets has emerged as an evolution in mapping, bringing together “both qualitative and quantitative mapping of cultures” in order to create a cultural inventory that allows for multi-faceted planning efforts (Duxbury, et al., 2015, p. 7). By placing the Seattle area arts organizations documented by the Arts Ecosystem Research Project (AERP) onto a map organized by decade, arts researchers can gain a valuable tool to utilize in the practice of Sankofa, which can be simply defined as “learning from or building on the past” (Quarcoo, 1972, as cited in Temple, 2010, p. 127). Examining this map …

The Essence Of Novice Elementary Principals' Experiences While Sustaining Successful, Effective Schools, Amy Heavin Jan 2022

The Essence Of Novice Elementary Principals' Experiences While Sustaining Successful, Effective Schools, Amy Heavin

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this multisite phenomenological case of study of elementary principals was to describe the essence of leadership of novice principals, studying themes of leadership attributes and conditions within the school community and preparation that reinforce the success of the school. While many studies have focused on the leadership attributes of established principals in schools, less has been conducted on those who join an already successful school and sustain that success. The intent of this study was to understand this phenomenon of novice principals who continue the success of a school. Preliminary data were gathered from school data sources …

Second, I analyzed the 2017 Household Origin Destination Survey to reveal travel behavior patterns and transport mode choice of older adults in Mexico City. Third, I revealed mobility experiences from older adults living in different neighborhoods in Mexico City by conducting twenty two telephone interviews. Lastly, I created joint displays that included both previous results to better understand how the findings from …

Understanding Economic Sustainability Through The Lens Of Education: Insights From Higher Education In Ireland, Daniel Kamphambale, Lucia Morales, Cormac Macmahon, Jon-Hans Coetzer Jan 2022

Understanding Economic Sustainability Through The Lens Of Education: Insights From Higher Education In Ireland, Daniel Kamphambale, Lucia Morales, Cormac Macmahon, Jon-Hans Coetzer

Papers

The IPCC’s 6th Assessment report reasserts overwhelming evidence that global warming is primarily due to anthropogenic activities causing imbalances in the carbon cycle. Our economic reliance on fossil fuels for industrialisation, urbanisation and farming exerts pressure on the Earth system. Population growth, affluence and technology represent significant sources of environmental pressure. Rapidly dispersed anthropogenic deposits constitute an alarming cause of modification of the Earth's crust, which has already become overwhelmingly dominant over nonhuman ecological processes. The current trajectory of socio-ecological interaction risks irreversible changes to the Earth system, where positive feedback may propel our life-supporting ecosystems beyond tipping points. The …

Centering Environmental Justice In California: Attempts And Opportunities In Ceqa, Lena Freij Jan 2022

Centering Environmental Justice In California: Attempts And Opportunities In Ceqa, Lena Freij

UC Law Environmental Journal

Environmental justice communities and advocates have used the California Environmental Quality Act (“CEQA”) as a necessary tool to incorporate their concerns into agency decision-making. However, environmental justice is neither mentioned in the statutory language of CEQA, nor was it intended as a fundamental purpose of CEQA as an environmental review statute. Thus, in order to understand where CEQA reform would be most successful in serving communities that are disproportionately impacted by environmental burdens, CEQA’s history must be evaluated with comprehensive principles of environmental justice. As such, this paper explores why and how environmental justice principles can and should be implemented …

Building A Global Community: An Intercultural Communication Perspective, Guo-Ming Chen

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Built on the author's previous work, this paper lays down a theoretical framework for building a global community from an intercultural communication perspective. The rapid development of new media in recent decades has accelerated globalization and transformed human society into a highly interconnected place through changing the way people think and interact. This indicates that a global society is gradually emerging due to the convergence of new media and globalization trend in the 21st century. However, the emergence of a global society does not necessarily mean that a new sense of community will follow. This paper calls for using "community" …

Effective Strategies To Recruit Post-9/11 Veterans To Fill Transportation-Related, Jeremy Haynes

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Some transportation company leaders struggle to attract and retain employees in an increasingly active and turbulent labor market. Failure to resupply human capital can disrupt and jeopardize supply chain capabilities across the United States. Grounded in the person-organization fit theory, the purpose of this multiple case study was to explore strategies HR managers use to recruit qualified military veterans to fill transportation vacancies. The participants included three HR managers from three transportation companies in the southeastern and midwestern regions of the United States that successfully implemented a military veteran recruiting strategy. Data were collected from semistructured interviews, journal notes taken …

Business Strategies Towards Financial Stability For Community College Administrators: A Qualitative Study, Lauren Holubec

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Nationwide, community college administrators are attempting to maintain financial stability amid extreme budget challenges. The problem that was addressed through this study is that some community college administrators at a large Northeastern state lack strategies to sustain financial stability, which threatens the 14 institutions’ ability to continue to operate as a viable educational choice. The purpose of this study was to investigate the strategies that community college administrators at multiple institutions of varying financial stability use. The conceptual framework that grounded the study was Porter’s five forces framework. Research questions focused on what strategies are used, why these strategies are …

Stakeholder Perceptions Regarding The Impact Of Creative Placemaking On Homelessness In Neighborhoods Experiencing Gentrification, Vanessa Renee Frazier Jan 2022

Stakeholder Perceptions Regarding The Impact Of Creative Placemaking On Homelessness In Neighborhoods Experiencing Gentrification, Vanessa Renee Frazier

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Urban planning and community development scholars continue to be interested in creative placemaking, a process meant to facilitate strategic partnerships between public and private sectors, art and culture communities, and community sectors, and the role it plays within the displacement of residents living in gentrified neighborhoods. However, researchers have found that the implementation of creative placemaking results in gentrification-related outcomes. Researchers have found a connection between the lack of affordable housing and gentrification-related displacement when creative placemaking is implemented. Researchers have suggested that stakeholder decisions direct the outcomes related to the implementation of creative placemaking; however, there is a lack …

Procedural Environmental Justice, Jonathan Skinner-Thompson Jan 2022

Procedural Environmental Justice, Jonathan Skinner-Thompson

Publications

Achieving environmental justice—that is, the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income, with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies—requires providing impacted communities not just the formal right, but the substantive ability, to participate as equal partners at every level of environmental decision-making. While established administrative policy purports to provide all people with so-called “meaningful involvement” in the regulatory process, the public participation process often excludes marginalized community members from exerting meaningful influence on decision-making. Especially in the environmental arena, regulatory decisions are often buried …

Exploring Student Perceptions Of Asynchronous Video In Online Courses, Patrick R. Lowenthal Jan 2022

Exploring Student Perceptions Of Asynchronous Video In Online Courses, Patrick R. Lowenthal

Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Research suggests that video can improve social presence in online courses. Video, though, is not a panacea; rather the success of video use depends in part on how and when it is used. Online instructors are increasingly using video in various ways, but questions remain on which types of videos students value most when it comes to establishing social presence. Given this, this mixed-methods sequential explanatory study explored student perceptions of three types of asynchronous video: video announcements, instructional videos, and video feedback. The results suggest that while video has the potential to improve social presence, it ultimately depends on …

Re-Imagining Design For Affordable Housing In Mexico, Kenza Fernandez Dominguez Jan 2022

Re-Imagining Design For Affordable Housing In Mexico, Kenza Fernandez Dominguez

Scripps Senior Theses

Since the presidency of Enrique Peña Nieto, affordable housing developments in Mexico have been produced in a massive, unsustainable scale. The speed at which these developments are produced equates to the carelessness that goes into their planning. At large, the developments’ monotonous design is aesthetically dehumanizing and fails to promote a sense of community. These developments lack basic infrastructure, and their residents have abandoned them, which has incentivized increased criminal activity.

In this paper, I will be looking at successful models of affordable housing globally, exploring the histories of communal living, and function of architectural collages. Based on my findings, …

Infill Development: A Contested Solution To California’S Crises, Conrad Hampson Jan 2022

Infill Development: A Contested Solution To California’S Crises, Conrad Hampson

Honors Theses

Infill development has become a contested term regarding California’s ‌perpetual housing crisis, the state’s fight against the ever-important climate emergency, and its efforts toward improving large social injustices. To define the contested term, infill development is the development or redevelopment of land that has been underutilized, in terms of being overlooked, abandoned, or left vacant, compared to the parcels surrounding the property, both directly abutting and within the more general locality. Regarding this concept and its trending nature, state and local governmental agencies, residential real estate developers, researchers, activist groups, and residents have each created their own narratives, taking up …

Beyond The Technical Dimensions Of Water: Community-Based Efforts For Water Justice In The High Desert, Ella Meyer Jan 2022

Beyond The Technical Dimensions Of Water: Community-Based Efforts For Water Justice In The High Desert, Ella Meyer

Pitzer Senior Theses

Water injustice is a result of the co-constitution of water and power from the global to the local level. In the small High Desert town of Adelanto, CA, concerns over the water quality and its association with overall quality of life incentivized a collaborative project to investigate dealings of water. A multidimensional analysis of the water system uncovers an instance of water injustice that is complex and linked to water issues regionally in the Inland Southern California area, as well as globally. Globalized discourses, climate change, global capitalism and flows of immigration are some of the global processes linked to …

A Quantitative Examination Of The Impostor Phenomenon In Community College And Technical College Presidents In The Upper Midwest, Jeffrey Pool

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

The purpose of this dissertation is to study the impostor phenomenon feelings in community and technical college presidents in the upper Midwest. This research is grounded in the previous works of Dr. P.R.Clance and uses her Clance Impostor Phenomenon Scale (CIPS) to evaluate the strength of impostor phenomenon feelings. Previous research has examined business leadership, women in leadership roles, university faculty, and students, but there is currently no research that applies specifically to higher education leadership. The research specifically examines the strength of impostor feelings in correlation to the president’s race, gender, and length of time in a presidency.
