Many Flowers Make A Bouquet: A Recipe For Women Entrepreneurs In Smes, Karam Zaki, Hany Shared

Journal of Global Business Insights

Women’s participation and activation of their role in societies are central goals among the UN’s global aims. This research accomplished the following objectives: first, expands the existing knowledge of women’s intentions and their startup desirability for small projects; second, explores the perceived outcomes; and third, develops an action plan based on the current constraints women face when leading small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) projects. Data were collected from an online questionnaire of 433 entrepreneurs based in Saudi Arabia (26.3% university staff, 23.1% project starters, 22.9% bank loan holders, 16.2% university students, and 11.5% leaders). The partial least squares path modeling …

A Summer Program Goes Online: How Beam Served Students From Marginalized Backgrounds During Covid, Ramya Ramaswamy, Javier Ronquillo Rivera

Journal of Math Circles

Most summers, BEAM runs free summer programs for mathematically talented middle school students from low income, historically marginalized communities. Our programs are designed to deepen students' problem solving and mathematical reasoning skills, to foster their love of math, and to build a community centered around peers all interested in mathematics.

This summer, in response to the pandemic, we made the decision to shift our summer programming online and operate virtually for the first time. We crafted a program that we hoped would sustain many of our original programming goals.

This paper outlines the decisions made, the variables that affected implementation, …

Webinar: Is Transit-Oriented Development Affordable For Low And Moderate Income Households?, Reid Ewing, Justyna Kaniewska

TREC Webinar Series

Transportation and land use planning, as a field, is shifting away from segregated uses connected by highways and streets to more compact, mixed-use developments connected by high-quality transit. This new paradigm has brought special attention to transit-oriented developments (TOD), which are sometimes touted as being among the most affordable, efficient places to live. But how affordable are they, and who has the power to effect change? This study examines housing costs for households living in TODs.

Cle Working Paper No. 1/2022--How Law Shapes Food Sovereignty In Urban Canada, Julia Witmer Feb 2022

Cle Working Paper No. 1/2022--How Law Shapes Food Sovereignty In Urban Canada, Julia Witmer

Centre for Law and the Environment

Inspired by the right to the city, this paper outlines the legal architecture of food sovereignty activities in urban Canada. The architecture is rooted in three fields of law: constitutional law, municipal and planning law, and health law, and explored through various case studies in urban centers. The paper reviews legal instruments in each field and analyzes how they shape different food sovereignty activities in supportive and restrictive ways. Constitutional law generally proves restrictive in its limited recognition of local government as true government, restricted provincial power in agricultural regulation, and its general treatment of food as a commodity. Municipal …

Investigating Individual And Collective Value Within A Network Of Communities Of Practice, Paula M. Jakopovic, Kelly Gomez Johnson, Nina White

Teacher Education Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

This report examines the value-add of mathematics faculty participating in regional communities of practice (CoPs) embedded within a larger Math CoP network. The CoPs and the network are aimed at fostering the use of teaching with inquiry practices in undergraduate mathematics courses. We examine value found at the individual participant level as well as at the CoP level within the larger network. We present themes identified using Wenger, Traynor and de Laat’s (2011) value framework to illustrate how individuals and CoPs find value within the network. In this paper we provide an initial look at how the network can support …

An Investigation Into The Causes Of Pedestrians' Walking Difficulties In Cairo Streets, Joy Magdy, Rania Rushdy Moussa, Usama Konbr

Architectural Engineering

This paper intends to focus on Cairo streets from the pedestrian-use perspective. It aims to explore and examine the factors that make Cairo streets better places for walking. Moreover, it intends to contribute to the limited qualitative research on walkable streets and pedestrians' walking experience, specifically in Cairo. In addition, it provides a conceptual framework for understanding the walkability of streets and the experience of pedestrians, built on both empirical field study and prevailing theoretical models reviewed in the literature. To closely examine the factors that determine Cairo streets to be walkable and therefore pedestrian-friendly, the research investigates the status …

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

In all cities and urban areas, the risk faced by people and assets from hazards associated with climate change has increased (high confidence1 ). Urban areas are now home to 4.2 billion people, the majority of the world’s population. Urbanisation processes generate vulnerability and exposure which combine with climate change hazards to drive urban risk and impacts (high confidence). Globally, the most rapid growth in urban vulnerability and exposure has been in cities and settlements where adaptive capacity is limited, especially in unplanned and informal settlements in low- and middle-income nations and in smaller and medium-sized urban centres (high confidence). …

The burden of chronic noncommunicable diseases in rural South Africa is exacerbated by delayed health-seeking. This study explored awareness, beliefs and health-seeking behaviour relating to diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases in Ingwavuma, a poor rural community in the uMkhanyakude district of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Eight gender and age-stratified Focus Group Discussions (FGD) were conducted in isiZulu using a pre-tested FGD guide with seventy-six participants. Thematic analysis was done to discern views on access to care for noncommunicable diseases. Findings revealed limited awareness of hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular-related disease burden. The community practices medical plurality, and consultation with traditional healers …

Community Acknowledgment: Engaging Community Members In Volunteer Acknowledgment, Fanlu Gui, Chun-Hua Tsai, John Millar Carroll

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

Volunteers in non-profit groups are a valuable workforce that contributes to economic development and supports people in need in the U.S. However, many non-profit groups face challenges including engaging and sustaining volunteer participation, as well as increasing visibility of their work in the community. To support non-profit groups' service, we explored how engaging community members in the volunteer-acknowledgment process may have an impact. We set up workstations and invited community members to write thank-you cards to volunteers in non-profit groups. We conducted 14 interviews with volunteers and community members, collected and analyzed 25 thank-you cards. We found that the acknowledgment …

Silica Mining Impact On Communities In India, Isabelle Honkomp

Celebration of Student Scholarship

It is important to mitigate the climate crisis by switching to renewable energy from the damaging fossil fuels. Although solar panels are a part of the solution to solving climate change, it is overlooked how much damage to communities large scale solar parks can cause. Through the UNFCCC Paris Climate Agreement India has created the goal to reduce carbon emissions by 33% by 2030. There is an increase in the production of solar panels due to India’s attempt to reach their goal has caused damage to communities due to the increase of mines, solar factories, solar parks, and e-waste dump …

Trends And Outcomes Of A School-Based Campaign To Reduce Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Consumption Among Racially And Ethnically Diverse Students In Middle School, Roya Amirniroumand

Theses and Dissertations

Reducing sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption has been identified as a chronic disease prevention strategy in children and adolescents (Muth et al., 2019; USDA & HSS, 2015) and promoting healthier alternative beverage options has become an important focus for public health policy and educational efforts. Community-driven school-based health initiatives targeting SSB consumption have shown promising outcomes however, few studies have explored these strategies for middle school students and less is known about the potential benefits of these efforts with racial/ethnic minority youth.

The present study examined whether racial/ethnic differences in SSB consumption existed in a sample of 419 students at one …

Key findings demonstrated that children’s happiness, socio-emotional competences and executive functions, all key elements of successful learning and living, were strongly supported …

Living Library Digital Exhibit, Emma Davis, Jaime Ding, Catherine J. Trujillo Jan 2022

Living Library Digital Exhibit, Emma Davis, Jaime Ding, Catherine J. Trujillo

Creative Works

The living wall was designed around three main concepts: Sustainability, community, and beauty. Recycled and repurposed industrial material composed from pallets makes up the frame while plants soften and give life to the display. The student designers invited the community to interact with the wall as a way to make fresh produce and plants grown on campus available for people to enjoy. We often forget to look around and savor the natural world we live in. By inviting nature and sustainability into our living and studying space we are reminded that the world is beautiful and worth protecting.

Papers, Posters, and Presentations

This policy paper provides a comprehensive overview of the local efforts by the various stakeholders in Egypt to tackle the issue of climate change. It is a well-known fact that the Nile Delta is considered one of the three extremely vulnerable hotspots of climate change (UNDP, 2018). It is evident that the Egyptian government is keen on facing the threats of climate change reflected in the adaptation policies and frameworks which are presented in this paper. Moreover, the paper suggests four policy alternatives that aim to meet the needs of the stakeholders while complying with Egypt’s Vision 2030 and the …
