In the United States, low-income, underserved rural and urban settings experience poor access to healthy, affordable food. Introducing new food outlets in these locations has shown mixed results for improving healthy food consumption. The Healthy Community Stores Case Study Project (HCSCSP) explored an alternative strategy: supporting mission-driven, locally owned, healthy community food stores to improve healthy food access. The HCSCSP used a multiple case study approach, and conducted a cross-case analysis of seven urban healthy food stores across the United States. The main purpose of this commentary paper is to summarize the main practice strategies for stores as well as …

Community engagement (CE) is critical for advancing health equity and a key approach for promoting inclusive clinical and translational science. However, it requires a workforce trained to effectively design, implement, and evaluate health promotion and improvement strategies through meaningful collaboration with community members. This paper presents an approach for designing CE curricula for research, education, clinical care, and public health learners. A general pedagogical framework is presented to support curriculum development with the inclusion of community members as facilitators or faculty. The overall goal of the curriculum is envisioned as enabling learners to effectively demonstrate the principles of CE in …

Community Self-Reliance Of Rural Tourism In Indonesia: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, Husen Hutagalung, Dedi Purwana, Usep Suhud, Amirul Mukminin, Hamidah Hamidah, Nurti Rahayu

The Qualitative Report

Community-based tourism villages have now become a worldwide concern because of their tremendous impact on strengthening the empowerment of local communities as well as on enhancing social responsibility in a sustainable manner. This study aims to explore the meaning of self-reliance in tourism village communities since it is a key indicator of the progress of community-based tourism villages. This study adopted a qualitative approach with Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to investigate the meaning of people's experiences from inter-subjective activities in a double-hermeneutic process between researchers and people who experience them. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight (8) research subjects from …

Determinants Of Spiritual Tourism Consumption: A Hierarchical Approach, Suneel Kumar, Shivangi Gupta, Shekhar Asthana

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

This paper aims to analyse the relationship between factors influencing the travel intentions of the spiritual tourist. The research design comprises three segments, i.e., identifying factors from the literature, conducting interviews with the academic experts and managers, and analysing the responses recorded. The Interpretive Structural Modelling (ISM) technique is used to determine the interlinkage between the factors and develop a hierarchical relationship. This paper identified twelve factors that influence the travel intention of spiritual tourists. The results indicate that the pro-tourism attitude of the management of religious monuments, presence of relaxation and recreational activities, historical and cultural heritage of a …

A History Of Ecofeminist-Socialist Resistance To Eco-Crisis In India, Gowri Parameswaran Jul 2022

A History Of Ecofeminist-Socialist Resistance To Eco-Crisis In India, Gowri Parameswaran

Journal of International Women's Studies

This article traces the history of women’s environmental activism in India after independence. The earliest organizing efforts came from women from indigenous communities who wanted to collectively push back against government and private encroachments into communal lands. From the 1970s to the late 1980s, ecofeminism became a dominant paradigm to analyze and respond to environmental issues globally. Indian feminists adapted the model to analyzing ecological issues locally while also pushing back against its essentialism and its blindness to social and economic inequities. Indian eco(feminist) socialists demanded a centering of the voices of the most vulnerable communities in environmental movements. In …

Introduction: South Asian Feminisms And Youth Activism: Focus On India And Pakistan, Nilanjana Paul, Namita Goswami, Sailaja Nandigama, Gowri Parameswaran, Fawzia Afzal-Khan

Journal of International Women's Studies

These are turbulent times for the many countries that form the Global South. South Asian nation-states are no exception; the last half century has ushered in liberalization of economies, forced structural adjustments, climate chaos, criminalization of indigenous and lower caste populations, and rapid technological changes. All these forces have resulted in massive upheavals often manifested in political, economic, and social crises. Experts observe that in times of instability, the most marginalized groups, already the target of social violence, are disproportionately subjected to enormous stress, anxiety, and insecurity. In South Asia, women, as one such group that faces multiple intersectional oppressions …

3rd Annual International Conference Proceedings: Challenging Linearity, Centre For Business And Economic Research (Cber), School Of Economics And Social Sciences (Sess)

Conference Proceedings

As we live in an era where the knowledge landscape is rapidly changing and becoming more complex, answering age-old questions about our society, economy, and environment has become more challenging today than ever before. In the wake of this change and challenge, falling back on linear and myopic conclusions is sometimes all too irresistible. A fatigue of imagination that leads to easy answers seems to be prevalent within several disciplines and is sometimes driven by ideological biases. Resultantly, the progress in addressing economic disadvantage, social isolation, and discrimination, psychological distress remains suboptimal often because of linear conceptual frameworks which fail …

Using Community-Based Participatory Research To Tailor A Diabetes Education Program To An At-Risk Black Church Congregation In The Mid-Atlantic, Samantha A. Mielke

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: Prediabetes and diabetes continue to have a high disease burden in the United States (Lin et al., 2018). Many individuals are unaware of their glucose state or the impact impaired glucose can have on their quality adjusted life years and cost of living. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has underscored the importance of decreasing the incidence of diabetes and has resources available. Still, many communities, particularly minority populations, can benefit from tailoring programs to their specific populations, where typical approaches may not be as beneficial (Joo & Liu, 2020). Additionally, Black American (BA) congregations often have …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: Sexual assault is a nationwide problem that often goes unreported. According to the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN), every 68 seconds an American is sexually assaulted. One out of every six women has been a victim of sexual assault in their lifetime. Sexual violence has long-term effects on victims including post-traumatic stress disorder, suicidal ideations and/or attempted suicide, substance use disorder, work and/or family life struggles, unplanned pregnancy, and/or sexually transmitted infections (STI).

Purpose: The purpose of this project is to improve the utilization of the Alabama Crime Victims Compensation Commission Program (ACVCC) for victims …

Using An Ecojustice Education Framework To Address Conservation In The Upstate, Rebecca Bolich-Wade Jul 2022

Using An Ecojustice Education Framework To Address Conservation In The Upstate, Rebecca Bolich-Wade

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

In an era of complex and overlapping issues, it is critical to evaluate the effectiveness of alternative interdisciplinary methodology within the fields of justice and environmental conservation. One such method is encapsulated in an ecojustice education framework. This capstone project sought to analyze the effectiveness of an ecojustice education framework to address conservation in the Upstate of South Carolina. In the process of this study’s literature review, it is evident that isolating social justice from environmental conservation is ineffective and unresponsive to the needs that historically underserved communities today face in terms of the mitigation of environmental burdens and enhancement …

How Can A Non-Personal Interpretive Guide Increase Place Attachment For Visitors, Encourage The Appropriate Development Of Sustainable Community-Based Ecotourism, And Increase Knowledge Of The Desert And Coastal Ecosystems And Migratory Whales Of Baja Mexico?, Mahin Hamilton Jul 2022

How Can A Non-Personal Interpretive Guide Increase Place Attachment For Visitors, Encourage The Appropriate Development Of Sustainable Community-Based Ecotourism, And Increase Knowledge Of The Desert And Coastal Ecosystems And Migratory Whales Of Baja Mexico?, Mahin Hamilton

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Small ecotour companies run whale-watching tours in remote, protected lagoons of Baja California Sur every winter, as gray whales migrate there to mate and give birth to their young. Often, tourists must drive for hours each way to reach the lagoons for their tour. When tourists get to the small villages that are the base camp for whale watching, their only guides are the boat captains, who do not normally speak English (the main language of tourists in the area). A non-personal interpretive guide would bridge the gap of information, so that tourists learn about the ecology, history, and culture …

Developing A Feasible Business Model For Expanding The Ev Market To Lower Income Californians, Samer Sarofim, Aly Tawfik

Mineta Transportation Institute

Electric vehicles (EVs) are a valuable tool in addressing the climate and energy challenges placed on our transportation systems. However, while national and international market shares of EVs have been rising with exponential rates, access to EVs of low-income populations has been significantly slower. This research developed a business model for expanding the EV market to low-income Californians. The team developed the model from qualitative data from various stakeholders, including Electric and Solar Companies, Professional and Community-Based Organizations, State Agencies, research institutions, and more, which enabled insights regarding various barriers that hinder the adoption of EVs. The team also used …

Farmer-Led Small-Scale Irrigation Systems Management In Highland Vegetable Farming In The Cordillera Region, Philippines, Cheryll C. Launio, Marivic O. Abyado

Journal of Economics, Management and Agricultural Development

Much has been said about large-scale and pump irrigation systems but not much published research is available on small-scale farmer-led irrigation systems supporting highland farming. This study described the management of irrigation sources and farmer-led irrigation systems, and conveyance and distribution technologies supporting highland farming. Data were based on FGDs in 30 barangays and a survey of 279 farmers in three highland provinces. Findings show that 91% of farmers use irrigation from springs, rivers, and creeks; 70% of the conveyance and distribution facilities are farmer-initiated and managed, and micro-irrigation technologies such as sprinklers and drip irrigation are accessible. National irrigation …

Forging Paths To Interdisciplinary Research For Early Career Academics, Mai P. Trinh, Robert Kirsch, Elizabeth A. Castillo, Denise E. Bates

Management Faculty Publications

Interdisciplinary research is a promising approach with which to generate innovative solutions to real-world problems and create social value, yet it is a risky choice for early career academics (ECAs). This essay outlines the risks and rewards associated with interdisciplinary scholarship within the context of business schools. We use structuration theory as a guiding framework to identify how institutional structures can constrain the agency and interdisciplinary aspirations of ECAs and others who do not fit within the current narrow definitions of disciplinary excellence. Sharing examples from the authors’ journeys as ECAs from different disciplinary backgrounds who study leadership and management …

Method Of Mapping Interdisciplinary Research And Practice At The Intersection Of Biology And Design, Veronika Kapsali Jun 2022

Method Of Mapping Interdisciplinary Research And Practice At The Intersection Of Biology And Design, Veronika Kapsali

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Ubiquitous, multi-meaning terms used to describe new ideas, finding etc, presents a significant barrier for cross-disciplinary discourse especially between the arts and sciences. The research presented in this paper tackles the problem of terminological disharmony specifically within the process of contextualising creative design practice informed by biological science and/or its applications. The study is implemented in three stages; lexical semantic theories and methods are applied to corpus-based investigations to assess the scope of biologically informed disciplines (BID) terminology; results are analysed using statistical and qualitative methods and mapped against known academic domains; the resulting map is evaluated via the analysis …

Incubating Civic Leadership In Design: The Role Of Cross-Pollination Spaces, Katerina Alexiou, Theodore Zamenopoulos, Vera Hale, Sophia De Sousa

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The paper explores the hypothesis that access to places that enhance capabilities for co-design work across sectors, is an important vehicle for incubating and sup-porting civic leadership. More specifically, the paper reports insights from a study which created ‘cross-pollination’ spaces to bring together academic and non-academic individuals from different backgrounds, disciplines, and sectors to explore the notion of incubating civic leadership and to develop pop-up interventions to test ideas for incubating civic leadership in two locations in the UK. Drawing on the reflections of participants collected through group reflection spaces and through individual interviews, the study identifies a number of …

Teixint Superilles: A Grassroots Project Of Participatory Design For Inclusive Public Spaces, Clément Rames, Mireia Lozano Carbassé, Lea Karrasch, Roger Guilemany Casas

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper presents the Teixint Superilles project which developed participatory design activities to create more inclusive public space. Our hypothesis was that when citizens have the opportunity to participate in placemaking activities, they gain not only greater awareness of their environment, but also a sense of agency over their city. Through a series of workshops, we have been experimenting with diverse methodologies for civic participation while confronting a wide range of participants with topics of gender, functional diversity, cross-generational inclusivity, and sustainability. We facilitated workshops in three different environments, thus reaching a wide range of participants: a public park, a …

Collective Dialogues On Motherhood For Feminist Futures, Bree Mcmahon, Dina Benbrahim, Ryan Gibboney, Ashley Hairston Doughty

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This conversation allowed mothers and non-mothers to connect with per- sonal stories and universal struggles during a supportive virtual moment. Some con- venors are design researchers, practitioners, students, and/or educators. This conver- sation also served as a space for designers to reflect on the role and responsibility of design in interrogating reproductive care systems in their current context. The goal of the convenors is to move toward and promote co-designing a preferable feminist fu- ture for mothers. There are few spaces like maternal health care and the experience of motherhood that would benefit simply through qualitative data collection, storytell- ing, …

Remaking The Social: Dialogical, Creative, And Co-Operative Capacities Of Thought At Hull House, Matthew Delsesto Jun 2022

Remaking The Social: Dialogical, Creative, And Co-Operative Capacities Of Thought At Hull House, Matthew Delsesto

DRS Biennial Conference Series

While social research is often positioned as a way to reflect social realities or de-velop theories for specialized fields through analyzing empirical evidence, based on data that is extracted from communities, Jane Addams points to a different mode of inquiry. This chapter introduces the theories and practices of the Hull House as an iterative and experimental process of inquiry— creating new knowledge in and through action, in a process of facing down pressing social chal-lenges. In particular it uses examples from the Hull House— which involved the design of the working people’s social science club, exhibitions on the industrial condition, …

Infusing Indigenous Knowledge Systems (Iks) Into Teaching Integrated Stem Disciplines: An Empirical Project, Iman C. Chahine

Journal of Indigenous Research

More recently, archaeological evidence collected from different cultures has unearthed numerous indigenous technologies that inherently embody specific scientific and mathematical structures, such as number systems, folk games and puzzles, kinship relations, divination systems, and symmetric strip architecture (Chahine, 2011). Building on the ingenuity of numerous indigenous cultures, such as Southeast Asian and African cultures, research has provided some opportunities to various uses of materials, which represent invaluable clues to cultural connections and continuities through space and time. While ample evidence in the literature supports the assertion that culturally relevant pedagogy can provide meaningful context for learning, there is shortage in …

Monetized Competitive Peer-To-Peer Skill-Based Game Play–An Introduction, Becky Harris, Bill Coley, Peter Gan, Anh-Vu Nguyen

International Gaming Institute Faculty Research

The COVID pandemic has changed the world in ways, both large and small, forever. One unexpected way the world changed was when live sports suddenly went dark and esports began experiencing attention from betting audiences that were suddenly starving for content.1 Esports also received a second glance from gaming regulators. And, though not exactly suddenly (even though it felt like it), approvals for wagering on esports were granted in a variety of jurisdictions, most notably Colorado and Nevada.2

A subset of the larger esports environment, peer-to-peer (P2P) skill-based play is hardly a new concept. You can find it …
