An Investigation Of The Perception Of Elderspeak Among Community Dwelling Older Adults, Abby L. Teply

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

This study aimed to expand the literature on the perception of elderspeak among community dwelling older adults with secondary purposes concerning how these perceptions vary across gender and region. Participants (n = 110) were presented a written vignette that depicted a nursing assistant in an assisted living facility waking a tenant from a nap and assisting the tenant to the bathroom before lunch. The nursing assistant uses elderspeak throughout the vignette. Following the vignette, participants’ reactions to the use of elderspeak and perceptions of the nursing assistant in the vignette were assessed using a series of open-ended questions, the Positive …

Important Aspects To Women’S Re-Integration: Positive Influences On Women’S Reentry Experience After Being Released From Prison, Sarah A. Benson Jan 2022

Important Aspects To Women’S Re-Integration: Positive Influences On Women’S Reentry Experience After Being Released From Prison, Sarah A. Benson

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Researchers can analyze statistics of recidivism rates and decipher that they are at an alarming rate—specifically regarding women convicts. The population of women in prison has drastically increased, and with that, so have their recidivism rates. Analyzing statistical data of incarceration and recidivism can show us the numbers, but what is the reason? Why do some women struggle to stay out of prison? I argued that one reason is because women who are released from prison are severely underprepared to reintegrate back into society and, are therefore, set up for failure. Previous studies suggest that reentry programs, education programs, relationships …

A Socio-Historical Analysis Of The Dynamics Of Genocide In Bosnia 1992-1995: Forces Contributing To The Continuation Of Genocide, Lejla Alvarez

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Despite preventive and diagnostic instruments and mechanisms put in place by the international community, genocide - systematic destruction of social groups - persists as a major regional and global problem. Genocidal processes are multifaceted and involve multiple factors at all levels of analysis interacting to produce genocide. This study examines the most significant socio-historical factors in producing the genocidal war in Bosnia that started in the spring of 1992, carried out generally uninterrupted until late 1995, with some forms of violence continuing years after the official end of the war. The main goals of the research were to contextualize the …

Understanding The Unstably Housed: Assessing The Systemic Gaps Of Young Adults Who Are “Doubling Up” In Washington State, Chelsea Perry

Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Theses

Youth and young adults exiting the juvenile justice system are at risk for entering a new system- the homeless system. This current research aims to understand the conditions that youth enter the homeless system. Current research and homeless reports from point in time (PIT) counts and other databases do not measure specific circumstances of housing instability such as couch surfing or “doubling up” with friends and close relatives versus couch surfing with strangers, and whether there are potentially criminogenic transactions or conditions that juveniles must adhere to in order to sustain this temporary housing. Methods include two areas of analysis. …

The Downward Spiral Of The Misogynistic Video Game Industry: It's Truly Up To The "Last Of Us", Lauren Cho Jan 2022

The Downward Spiral Of The Misogynistic Video Game Industry: It's Truly Up To The "Last Of Us", Lauren Cho

Loyola of Los Angeles Entertainment Law Review

With the surge of lawsuits in 2021 against video game companies alleging

gender discrimination, it is evident that sexism and misogyny run rampant

within the video game industry, but two questions remain. What causes,

if any, may be attributable to the misogynistic mindset of male gamers? And

what can the video game industry and the law do to rectify the dominance of

“frat boy culture” that continues to plague women—regardless of whether

they are casual or professional gamers, or regular employees in game developing

companies?

California’s labor laws are supposed to be the most protective of employees;

yet two lawsuits …

Swarthmore College Libraries and Swarthmore College’s List Gallery engaged in an innovative collaboration in 2018 that celebrated the quilts and quiltmakers of the remote and historically Black community of Gee’s Bend, Alabama. Their close collaboration, along with strong support from academic departments and faculty, enabled the gallery and the libraries to extend their capabilities to present an ambitious program that promoted artwork, student scholarship, and community engagement. The successful completion of the project established a protocol for the libraries and gallery to maintain their transformed relationship as they consider and plan future projects.

The Democracy Crisis In El Salvador: An Overview, Mneesha Gellman Jan 2022

The Democracy Crisis In El Salvador: An Overview, Mneesha Gellman

Emerson Authors, Researchers, & Creators

This paper examines the current democratic breakdown in El Salvador, identifying factors and events in the country from 2019 to 2022 that have led to democratic backsliding, the process by which democracy as a political system loses traction. Indicators of backsliding show that El Salvador’s shared characteristics of liberal democracy — free and fair electoral procedures accessible to all; freedoms of the press, to assembly, and to express political opinions; the rule of law; and basic human rights protections — are in peril. Given the events of the last several years under President Nayib Bukele, El Salvador’s regime more closely …

Unsettling Settler Colonialism In Words And Land: A Case Study Of Far Northern California, Mneesha Gellman Jan 2022

Unsettling Settler Colonialism In Words And Land: A Case Study Of Far Northern California, Mneesha Gellman

Emerson Authors, Researchers, & Creators

This article examines two case studies of unsettling settler colonialism in the far north of California: the inclusion of Yurok language electives in public high schools, and land return to the Wiyot Tribe. These two cases demonstrate repertoires of Indigenous resistance to historic and ongoing culturecide—the killing of culture—and show what unsettling settler colonialism looks like in the region. The central research question in this article is: How does unsettling happen in settler colonial-controlled public institutionalised spaces in far northern California? I argue that acts of Indigenous voice-raising and place-making constitute forms of resistance to ongoing erasure of Indigenous peoples …

Exploring Educators’ Perceptions Of Legislation About Discrimination, Archer Brooke Miller Jan 2022

Exploring Educators’ Perceptions Of Legislation About Discrimination, Archer Brooke Miller

Honors Theses and Capstones

Across the nation, there have been efforts in “36 states to restrict education on racism, bias, the contributions of specific racial or ethnic groups to U.S. history, or related topics” (Stout). These laws essentially banned the teaching of critical race theory and systemic racism in all public K-12 classrooms. This study is pertinent because teaching about systemic racism is important. It was critical to shed light on this topic and show people why Sections 297 and 298 of House Bill 2 were salient and what impact it was having.

Scholarly Study Of Religion In Ukraine, Vita Tytarenko, Liudmyla Fylypovych, Larysa Vladychenko

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

The article analyzes the specifics of religious studies of religious minorities (RM). This religious phenomenon needs a concrete applied methodology that would make it possible to study the RM in its entirety. It is proposed to rely on the materials, which, in this case were the materials of a sociological study conducted within the project "Religious Minorities of Ukraine and State-Religious Relations" (2021), carried out by the authors of the article. As a result, it was clarified which religious organizations should be attributed to the RM, and how they differ from the religions of the majority, who have specific needs …

Legal Uncertainties: Covid-19, Distance Learning, Bar Exams, And The Future Of U.S. Legal Education, Christine Corcos

Journal Articles

The COVID-19 pandemic forced the U.S. legal academy and legal profession to make changes to legal education and training very rapidly in order to accommodate the needs of students, graduates, practitioners, clients, and the public. Like most of the public, members of the profession assumed that most, if not all, of the changes would be temporary, and life would return to a pre-pandemic normal.

These assumed temporary changes included a rapid and massive shift to online teaching for legal education, to online administration of the bar exam in some jurisdictions, or the option to offer the diploma privilege in others. …

“By Following Them, I Was Able To Identify Things I Shared With Them” : Conceptualizing How Social Media Use Influences Genderqueer Identity Development, Margeaux Gaiani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Among young genderqueer people, social media can be used as a tool for gender exploration, building support systems, and identity validation. However, literature on how these processes are linked together over time to curate a holistic sense of identity is limited. Using a grounded theory framework, this study seeks to construct a model explaining how gender identity development is linearly influenced by social media use among young genderqueer (transgender, non-binary, genderfluid, etc.) individuals. 20 indepth interviews were conducted with genderqueer participants ranging in age from 18- 26 years old. Participants were recruited through personal contact, referrals, and social media posts. …

Gendered Negotiation Of Space: A Study On Gender And Mobility Among Transgender Persons In Pakistan, Sana Illahe Jan 2022

Gendered Negotiation Of Space: A Study On Gender And Mobility Among Transgender Persons In Pakistan, Sana Illahe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Transgender persons, known as khwaja sira in Pakistan, have historically been marginalized and excluded from various spatial domains, as they do not fit the societal norms of binary gender. They are subject to gender discipline by the Pakistani society to coerce them into conforming to the social norms. This research study uses in-depth interviews and applies grounded theory in conjunction with Michel Foucault’s concept of discipline to explore how khwaja sira are subject to societal discipline in Pakistan. The discipline ranges from tacit to overt forms, including verbal and sexual harassment. Khwaja sira are disciplined within their families, in formal …

Assessing The Association Among Hospital Ownership Penalties Assessed Under The Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program And 30-Day Risk Standardized Mortality Rates For Selected Conditions, 2016-2018, Jennifer Carmona

Dissertations and Theses

Background: The Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program (HRRP) is an aspect of Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2010. HRRP requires Medicare to reduce payments to hospitals with relatively high readmission rates. While the implementation of the program has been accompanied by reductions in readmission rates, some have expressed concerns about unintended consequences, including harm to patient care and even death. Under HRRP, hospitals serving a high proportion of socioeconomically disadvantaged patients, like public hospitals, have been more likely to receive financial penalties, potentially impeding their ability to invest resources in improving patient outcomes. There is previous research …

Association Between Childhood Obesity, Family Meals, And Dietary Quality Among Us Children Aged 6 To 17 Years Residing In Snap-Eligible Households, Noemi Rodriguez Jan 2022

Association Between Childhood Obesity, Family Meals, And Dietary Quality Among Us Children Aged 6 To 17 Years Residing In Snap-Eligible Households, Noemi Rodriguez

Dissertations and Theses

Background:

Between 20 and 21% of US children 6-19 have obesity. Children residing in households eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) are exposed to vulnerable socioeconomic conditions, often living in low-resourced households and communities. These children are at a high risk for obesity, and thus to obesity-related comorbidities as well as adulthood obesity. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) recommends family meals as well as diets meeting the American Dietary Guidelines as an obesity prevention strategy. These are connected; the dominantly theorized pathway by which family meals protect against childhood obesity is through the diet quality of the …

The Axis Of Access: A Quantitative Ethnography Of Presidential Discourse On The Construct Of College Access In The United States, Pamela M. Donnelly Jan 2022

The Axis Of Access: A Quantitative Ethnography Of Presidential Discourse On The Construct Of College Access In The United States, Pamela M. Donnelly

Theses and Dissertations

Federal discourse pertaining to college access requires clarified definition. Use of the college access construct has become commonplace, yet no unified refinement of meaning exists. This study, which covered U.S. presidential communications from January 2009 to October 2021, addressed the abstraction of language as leaders presented ideas, policies, and opinions. Observable trends impacting social mobility for students from underserved populations were of central interest. The research methodology, Quantitative Ethnography (QE), used the tool of Epistemic Network Analysis (ENA). Eight codes were identified through grounded analysis: Affordability, Pathway Program, Underserved Populations, Class Systems, Upward Mobility, Career Readiness, Trajectory, and Career Technical …

Coming Full Circle On Human Rights In The Global Economy: International Economic Law Tools To Realize The Right To Development, Diane A. Desierto

Journal Articles

From the Article

This article argues that the discipline and profession of international economic law has undergone a significant architectural change to focus on human rights law as both the premise and promise of the international economic system. Contrary to prevailing currents that focus on the irrelevance of the global economic system to realize human rights, this article argues that international economic law tools have already been converging within the last decade to authentically realize the Right to Development of individuals, groups, and populations. The Draft Convention on the Right to Development defines the right as the enjoyment, participation, and …

Speaking Up: School Climate And Language Politics In The Trump Era, Mneesha Gellman Jan 2022

Speaking Up: School Climate And Language Politics In The Trump Era, Mneesha Gellman

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

Identity politics are fraught. High school is a prime location where such politics play out and interface with state-dictated norms and values about acceptable social behavior. This article examines identity politics during the Trump era in two far Northern California high schools to better understand the impact on Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) students. I argue that while the Trump effect allowed hostility towards BIPOC people to be expressed more openly in general, schools can also be sites of resistance to culturecide—the killing of culture—that diminishes the role of minority ontologies and epistemologies in the formation of young …
