Why On Earth Does “Tongue(S)” Become Ecstatic Speech?, Ekaputra Tupamahu
Why On Earth Does “Tongue(S)” Become Ecstatic Speech?, Ekaputra Tupamahu
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
This chapter deals with the history of interpretation. Why is the phenomenon of “tongue(s)” in the New Testament understood today as ecstatic speech? In the history of interpretation, there are two major modes of reading the phenomenon of speaking in tongue(s) in the New Testament: the “missionary-expansionist” and the “romantic-nationalist” modes of reading. The earliest readers of the New Testament up until those of the mid-nineteenth century commonly understood the phenomenon of tongue(s) as a miraculous ability to speak in foreign languages—often called xenolalia—for the purpose of expanding Christianity and preaching the gospel. The shift in understanding began to …
Should India Lend To Gdh The Same Weight As To Gdp?, Sudhavna Char
Should India Lend To Gdh The Same Weight As To Gdp?, Sudhavna Char
International Review of Business and Economics
Growth for growth's sake goes against the grain of sustainable economics. It is not maintainable on the basis of full-cost pricing. The billing should include health and environmental costs, including charges for the exhaustion of natural resources, egregious disparities in wealth distribution, and increases in mental and physical sickness. Today’s material growth model transmutes many economic endeavors into preying on current and future generations. Unwittingly, the single-minded pursuit of growth without a global perspective has been resulting in loss of life and property, besides undermining prospects of life’s basics for upcoming generations. This is myopic, ignoring catastrophes hitting home. In …

Conceptual Complexity And Terrorist Rhetoric: Examining Conceptual Complexity’S Role In Political Violence, Westley S. Hunter
Conceptual Complexity And Terrorist Rhetoric: Examining Conceptual Complexity’S Role In Political Violence, Westley S. Hunter
Honors Undergraduate Theses
It is well-documented that leaders' conceptual complexity can affect their decision-making, but what about its broader effects on political violence? While Hermann & Sakiev (2011) and Conway & Conway (2011) have examined terrorists' conceptual complexity before attacks, this study generates a more extensive analysis by examining weapon types and target types. This research explored the connection between a terrorist leader's level of conceptual complexity and the violent attacks their organizations commit, arguing that complexity lowers before an attack and after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. It employed a content analysis of Osama bin Laden's rhetoric from 1999 to 2003 to discern …

Laborem Exercens And The Subjective Dimension Of Work In Economics And Finance, Geoffrey Frieson
Laborem Exercens And The Subjective Dimension Of Work In Economics And Finance, Geoffrey Frieson
Department of Finance: Faculty Publications
The objective dimension of work involves the person acting on external objects through the process of economic production. But because persons tend toward self-realization, and because work is an integral part of this process, the person is also the subject of work. The subjective dimension of work involves work as a creative process operating on the person performing the work. In the encyclical Laborem Exercens, John Paul II argues that the subjective dimension of work is primary and that the primary basis of the value of work is the subject: man himself. This does not mean that the economic …

“This Person Is Safe”: An Exemplar Of Conducting Individual Interviews In Qualitative Research With Black Women, Quenette Walton, Priscilla P. Kennedy, Olulbunmi Oyewuwo, Phylicia Allen
Social Work Faculty Publications
Significant conceptual and empirical evidence has been found through qualitative research about the benefits, limitations, and uses of individual interviews. However, there is scant research illustrating how researchers use specific techniques that center participants’ intersecting identities to build rapport, trust, and authentic connections during individual interviews, and especially during interviews with Black women. We illustrate how we used eight empirically grounded techniques in our qualitative individual interviews with Black women. Through our analysis of the interviews, the concept of safety emerged. “This person is safe” reflects the combined stories the women reported regarding their experiences engaging in individual interviews. In …
Rethinking Human Resources Management In A Complex Context: Proposing Systemic Human Resources Management (Sys Hrm), Regina Tendayi
Rethinking Human Resources Management In A Complex Context: Proposing Systemic Human Resources Management (Sys Hrm), Regina Tendayi
Full-Text Theses & Dissertations
The emerging disruptive business environment world-wide presents complex challenges to the theory and practice of human resources management (HRM) globally, including the United States. In this dissertation, I argue that against a volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) context, HRM should adopt systems thinking methodologies, approaches, frameworks, and tools to ensure sustainable HRM problem-solving and decision-making. To this end, I formulated a new approach that I labelled Systemic Human Resources Management (Sys HRM). I emphasized that Sys HRM does not replace traditional methodologies but rather, it is complementary to prevailing HRM methodologies, approaches, tools, and frameworks. Using a case study …
Identity Work In Aspiring Big 4 Accounting Practice Leaders: Narratives Of Personal Reinvention, Michael H. Kinnen
Identity Work In Aspiring Big 4 Accounting Practice Leaders: Narratives Of Personal Reinvention, Michael H. Kinnen
Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)
How do future Big 4 partners and managing directors (collectively referred to as “practice leaders”) develop themselves and change their identities as they progress through role transitions within the accounting firms where their careers unfold? For accountants who develop themselves into partner material, little is known about the process of identity work they engage in across their career span; even less is known about managing directors’ identity work processes. This study explores accountants’ self-transformation journey, one marked by intention and reinvention, as they become practice leaders. Their journey of agentic reinvention, though it takes place in a socially connected environment, …

Context: Children consume up to two-thirds of their daily dietary requirements in full-time childcare, making the setting a critical vector for preventing childhood obesity. Objective: To summarize the ecological correlates of children’s dietary intake in childcare settings that were identified and categorized using the Six-Cs developmental ecological model of contributors to overweight and obesity in childhood. Data Sources: A literature search was conducted in 4 electronic databases. Study Selection: English-language, peer-reviewed publications that investigated at least 1 correlate of children’s (ages 2–6 years) dietary intake in childcare settings and measured children’s actual consumption of foods and beverages from food groups …
Toddler Play Preferences And The Teacher’S Role In The Outdoor Play Environment, Keting Chen, Erin E. Hamel
Toddler Play Preferences And The Teacher’S Role In The Outdoor Play Environment, Keting Chen, Erin E. Hamel
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
Direct experience with nature is a primary component of environmental education and especially beneficial for young children. The present study examined the outdoor play preferences of toddlers and investigated the role teachers play in the outdoor space. Toddlers’ outdoor play was video recorded by GoPro cameras and coded for preferred play locations and initiator of the play. Results showed that the three most preferred spaces for toddlers in the outdoor classroom were the sandbox, swing area, and play structures; least frequently visited were open areas close to the classrooms, the garden, and the tree area. In addition, toddlers initiated play …

This study is based on a careful reading of Critical Race Theory: An Introduction (Third Edition, 978-1479802760) by Richard Delgado and Jean Stefancic. This book is considered “the best introduction available to Critical Race Theory.” Both Delgado and Stefancic are guiding lights of the CRT movement. Nevertheless, the reader should be aware that any ideological movement has disagreements among its adherents. My comments regarding CRT are responses to Delgado and Stefancic. The reader should also be aware that I am highly critical of CRT. My purpose here is to explain what CRT is, and point out its mistakes, exaggerations, and …

Italian Studies In Southern Africa, Vol. 35 No. 1 (2022): Diversity, Decolonisation, And Italian Studies, Simone Brioni Dr., Marie Orton, Graziella Parati, Gaoheng Zhang
Department of English Faculty Publications
This special issue explores the intersections of diversity and decolonisation within the field of Italian Studies. By engaging with postcolonial theory, migration, and critical race studies, the contributors reframe traditional narratives of Italian culture and history. The issue investigates the legacies of colonialism, the experiences of racialized communities in Italy, and the role of Italian Studies in fostering inclusive and equitable academic practices. Through interdisciplinary approaches, the essays call for a critical re-evaluation of the field, advocating for a more diverse, decolonial, and globally conscious understanding of Italy's past and present.
Tropical Materialisms: Toward Decolonial Poetics, Practices And Possibilities, Christian Jil R. Benitez, Anita Lundberg
Tropical Materialisms: Toward Decolonial Poetics, Practices And Possibilities, Christian Jil R. Benitez, Anita Lundberg
Filipino Faculty Publications
Tropical Materialisms concur on at least three things: humans are always entangled with non-human/material agents; such entanglement is necessary for any creative act to take place; and these same entanglements allow us to interrogate and re-evaluate preconceived notions about the world. This Special Issue aligns itself with the fields of new materialism and posthumanism. What is particularly exciting is the opportunity to rearticulate these fields in tropical terms, that is, with scholarly and creative practices from and about the tropical world. This focus is crucial given that current scholarship in new materialism and posthumanism predominantly comes from European temperate contexts …

Racially Collusive Boycotts: African American Purchasing Power In The Wigs And Hair Extensions Market, Felix B. Chang, Janelle Thompson, Anisha Rakhra
Faculty Articles and Other Publications
This Essay analyzes expressive boycotts in the market for wigs and hair extensions, where consumers are primarily African Americans and producers are almost uniformly Korean Americans. This type of ethnically segmented and misaligned (“ESM”) market raises unique doctrinal and theoretical questions. Under antitrust caselaw, the treatment of a campaign to divert business from Korean American–owned to African American–owned hair stores is uncertain because of the campaign’s mixed social and economic motives. Delving into the theoretical implications of this ESM market can help steer the doctrine appropriately. Along the way, such an exercise illuminates the nuances of racial solidarity and market …

The Struggle To Alleviate Nurse Burnout, Shawn Harmon
Master of Science in Nursing Theses and Projects
This project assumes the purpose of defining, reviewing, and performing a three-part activity to alleviate some fraction of a detrimental disorder that has plagued the nursing profession for years identified as nurse burnout. This debilitating stress induced by burnout can lead to decreased job satisfaction. If burnout is left unchecked, it may result in nurses leaving the profession altogether. The meaningful results, if realized, will be presented to the administrative leaders to implement changes as they see fit. The goals are to see positive results translate into interventions by the hospital that will, over time, increase job satisfaction for every …

The Impact Of International Migration And The Third Childbirth Event In Egypt Using The Simultaneous Hazard Model, Sherien Moustafa, Mostafa El Misery, Elsayed Khater
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
This study examines the case of male migration in Egypt, a significant and relatively recent phenomenon. Fertility and migration models are estimated simultaneously to account for cross-correlation. The main aim of the national strategy for population and development 2015-2030 is to reduce the total fertility rate to an average of 2.4 by 2030, compared with 3.5 at present. This paper aims to study the mutual influence of international migration and fertility in Egypt using a simultaneous hazard regression model of two processes, the third childbirth event and the migration event. We use data from the Egypt-HIMS (Egypt Household International Migration …

A large and vibrant science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) workforce has a range of benefits for the economic and social well-being of communities; yet, women continue to be underrepresented in these occupations. Nationally, in 2017, women accounted for over half of the college-educated workforce but made up only 29% of those employed in science and engineering occupations, while being overrepresented in STEMrelated fields like healthcare. Nebraska’s STEM workforce is reflective of national trends. In 2019, about 27% of Nebraska women 25 years or older worked in a core STEM occupation, which we can estimate to be about 15,300 women …

Internationalization For Whom And For What? Ethical Questions For Sport Management Programs In Global North Universities, Chen Chen
Sport Management Collection
This paper maps the ethical complexities underlying the internationalization of sport management programs in Global North universities. Drawing upon postcolonial theory, critical internationalization studies, and studies of global ethics, I review the current articulations that concern the internationalization of sport management programs and highlight the limitations therein - that is, they are primarily articulated from a liberal global imaginary. In introducing the critical and decolonial ethics frameworks, I present some alternative possibilities to envision internationalization practices and policies in sport management programs. Sport management scholars and educators located in Global North institutions are encouraged to confront the ethical challenges of …

Protected Places: Comparing Valuations Of Public Lands In U.S. Conservation Legislation, Bergen Schmidt
Sociology Honors Projects
Across American history, the federal government has chosen to protect over 600 million acres, nearly a quarter of the country’s total land acreage, as public lands. This paper considers the process of valuation — where institutions organize competing value frameworks to determine worth — and how new cultural formations prompt a new process of valuation. Through a comparative study of the Wilderness Act of 1964 and the Great American Outdoors Act of 2020, this paper analyzes which values justify the protection of public lands. I find that public lands are valued in their use for humans, which stems from their …
