The War On Drugs And Its Legal Effects On Black Americans, Alexia L. Howard-Mullins
The War On Drugs And Its Legal Effects On Black Americans, Alexia L. Howard-Mullins
2022 Symposium
The differences in treatment between Black and white Americans in the past fifty years has been a topic of thought in the minds of political and sociological scholars since the inception of the War on Drugs in 1971. These differences in treatment may lead to discrimination legally, resulting in longer prison sentences and a higher proportion of Black Americans in prison. This study analyzes the results of the War on Drugs that led to disproportionate imprisonment of Black Americans, including mandatory sentencing laws, drug classifications, and discrimination within law enforcement and the legal system. This study will use primary sources …

The Impact Of Domestic Violence On Mental Health, Candida Likens
Integrated Studies
Abstract
This research paper examines the issues of domestic violence on mental health. The paper will provide helpful information for a caseworker to follow as a guideline and structure for understanding and addressing domestic violence issues. There are numerous types of domestic violence, and this is a general list. Each area that is identified provides a description of the violence, as well as the issues that can be raised due to domestic violence. In addition to background, it also has numerous factors that influence how people make decisions, resources for the victim, and legal protections.
America's Generational Workplace Impact, Savannah Umland
America's Generational Workplace Impact, Savannah Umland
Integrated Studies
In the paper that lies before us, we will address a complex yet ever-growing need for resolution and perplexing reality; critical events in the U.S shape and change a generation, and a generation shapes and changes the future. The cycle of generational influence is ever-evolving and influences the future that lies before ourselves, our children, and our grandchildren. In contrast, personal influences have a substantial impact on the future outlook of America; workplace influences are arguable as equally impactful in value and influence.
We will dive deep into evaluating and dissecting the weaknesses and strengths of each generation, what historical …

Brown'S Children's Rights Jurisprudence And How It Was Lost, Catherine E. Smith
Brown'S Children's Rights Jurisprudence And How It Was Lost, Catherine E. Smith
Scholarly Articles
The first decision in Brown v. Board of Education is a landmark children's rights case that has been lost. After all, segregated education was not sui generis; free and independent Black children in the United States had always been perceived as a significant threat to White supremacy, just as their subjugation had always been a powerful and effective means to uphold it. In an unprecedented move to address this age-old practice, Brown I recognized Black children's right to protect themselves from government exploitation that targeted them because they were Black and young-erecting barriers in their equal path to adulthood in …

Wash Practices In Mozambique, Karsyn Britsch
Wash Practices In Mozambique, Karsyn Britsch
Ballard Brief
Although there has been improvement over the years, Mozambique severely lacks basic access to WaSH facilities. WaSH is a collective term for water, Sanitation and Hygiene - which refers to access to clean water, improved sanitation facilities, and basic hygiene materials like soap for handwashing. WaSH is an issue in Mozambique due to a declining number of natural water sources, a high amount of contaminated water resources, a lack of proper toileting facilities, and issues with governmental corruption hindering individuals from having access to clean water resources. These hindrances result in water-borne diseases. unsafe drinking water, bacteria ridden agriculture, and …

The Privacy Paradox By Proxy: Considering Predictors Of Sharenting, Niamh Ní Bhroin, Thuy Dinh, Kira Thiel, Elisabeth Staksrud, Kjartan Ólafsson

Despite being worried that children may compromise their privacy by disclosing too much personal data online, many parents paradoxically share pictures and information about their children themselves, a practice called sharenting. In this article we utilise data from the EU Kids Online survey to investigate this paradox. We examine both how individual charac‐ teristics such as demographics and digital skills, and relational factors, including parental mediation styles, concerns about children’s privacy, and communication between parents and children influence sharenting practices. Counter‐intuitively, our findings show that parents with higher levels of digital skills are more likely to engage in sharenting. Furthermore, …

Independent Directors And Corporate Governance In Thailand: A New Frontier, Luke Nottage
Independent Directors And Corporate Governance In Thailand: A New Frontier, Luke Nottage
Florida State University Journal of Transnational Law & Policy
Asian companies' equity offerings and securities markets have grown significantly, including in Southeast Asia (Part I). Yet corporate governance is undergoing only a gradual transformation, especially where government and family-linked listed companies remain common. Foreign investors and international organizations (including ASEAN) have therefore been pressing for further reforms, including independent director (ID) requirements to monitor executives and others. Part II examines Thailand, building on recent comparisons of mostly larger Asian markets. Part II.A explores when and why ID requirements were introduced-as early as 1993. Part II.B examines how they were introduced-mandatory regulation, supplemented by comply-or-explain requirements, then encouragement through annual …

Vibrations Through Wire And Air, Kirsten Burningham
Inscape
As a college freshman, I stretched my wings, and it was irritating to feel my mom’s desire to tether herself, ever so slightly, to me. I took pride in how little I needed—perhaps, even, how little I wanted from her. I can’t remember exactly what was bothering me about our last phone call; perhaps it was simply that she called, interrupting my socializing with her interest in my life. Whatever the reason, I was festering, and her needs were pestering me, so I walked from the back row of my Intro to Sociology class, passing metal-backed and spring-seated chairs, to …
Common Law Divorce, Michael J. Higdon
Common Law Divorce, Michael J. Higdon
Scholarly Works
Common law marriage has existed in the United for more than 200 years. Although not permitted as widely today, every state continues to recognize a common law marriage from one of the handful of states that still permit parties to wed in this informal manner. In contrast, never has there been anything even approaching common law divorce—and for good reason. Namely, the states’ desire to ensure that those who leave unsuccessful marriages do so in such a way that their interests (as well as their children’s) are adequately protected. Nonetheless, even though not sanctioned by law, informal divorce not only …

The Ways That Parted In The Library: The Gospels According To Matthew And According To The Hebrews In Late Ancient Heresiology, Jeremiah Coogan
The Ways That Parted In The Library: The Gospels According To Matthew And According To The Hebrews In Late Ancient Heresiology, Jeremiah Coogan
Jesuit School of Theology
This article traces how early Christian thinkers (including Irenaeus, Eusebius, Epiphanius and Jerome) conceptualised ‘Jewishness’ in bibliographic terms. The material that early Christian sources associate with the Gospel according to the Hebrews exhibits a substantial textual relationship with the Gospel according to Matthew. The distinction emerges within a fourth- and fifth-century heresiological project of bibliographic categorisation that seeks to differentiate Jewish and Christian books and readers. Bibliography is a way of distinguishing reading communities and thereby advances the late ancient rhetorical project often known as the parting of the ways between Judaism and Christianity.

The Disconnect Between Knowledge And Perceptions: A Study Of Fishermen’S Local Ecological Knowledge And Their Perception Of The State Of Fisheries And How These Are Managed In The Dominican Republic, Elizabeth Layli Mclean, Graham E. Forrester, Carlos G. Garcia-Quijano

Understanding what fishers know about the ecology of the fish they catch, and how they perceive the state and management of their fisheries can guide efforts towards more sustainable fishing practices. We tested relationships between fishers’ local ecological knowledge (LEK) and their perceptions of their fisheries and of marine protected areas in the Dominican Republic. A qualitative-quantitative methodological sequence using data from interviews with 152 multi-species fishers revealed variable, but generally high levels of LEK, particularly of habitat use and predator–prey interactions. The majority reported negative perceptions of the state of their fishery and were aware of local management actions. …

Deflect, Delay, Deny: A Case Study Of Segregation By Law School Faculty, Briana Rosenbaum
Scholarly Works
Many histories of school desegregation litigation center on the natural protagonists, such as the lawyers and plaintiffs who fought the status quo. Little attention is paid to the role that individual faculty members played in the perpetuation of segregated legal education. When the antagonists in the historiographies do appear, it is usually as anonymous individuals and groups. Thus, “the Board of Regents” refused to change its policy and “the University” denied a person’s application.
But recently discovered and rarely accessed historic documents provide proof of the direct role that some law school faculty members played in the perpetuation of segregation. …

This analysis aspires to offer informative practice on how to improve scholar-practitionership. Indicated is how the review of scholarly peer-reviewed studies is an investigative process providing context to scholarship studies and overall scholarship. Further, the scholar-practitionership application exhibits how exceptional scholarship skills improve the body of data, structure, and quality needed to investigate global issues. Scholars provide a wide-ranging analysis of phenomena to convey conceptual, theoretical, and empirical analysis of studies. Further, substantive feedback from collaborative research panels allows for substantiation and a well-developed final product. Likewise, the content of a scholarly study must align to reflect objectivity and continuity. …
