‘Greenness’ In The Eye Of The Beholder: Comparing Perceptions Of Sustainability And Well-Being Between Artificial And Natural Turfgrass, Michael R. Barnes, Eric Watkins

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Turfgrass lawns are a central component in urban green space and provide a variety of ecosystem services. Traditionally, natural turfgrass lawns can have substantial input requirements (e.g., water, herbicides), which if not managed properly can have harmful ecological effects. A proposed solution that has already been adopted in many cities are artificial turfgrass lawns which do not require some of the traditional inputs of natural lawns. However, understanding perceptions of the sustainability and well-being benefits between these two surfaces are unknown. We surveyed adults in the United States in order to understand perceptions of sustainability and well-being between artificial and …

Where To Expand Green Infrastructure To Support Equitable Climate Change Adaptation In The City Of Toronto?, Kristen Regier, Tenley M. Conway

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Green Infrastructure (GI) is a potential tool to help cities adapt to climate change. In particular, GI can help moderate high summer temperatures and reduce urban flooding, both of which are expected to become more common with on-going climate change. However, GI is not evenly distributed in many cities suggesting that some neighborhoods are more vulnerable to climate change impacts. Additionally, marginalized communities often lack the resources needed to reduce existing vulnerabilities. This study explores the question: where should GI initiatives be focused to support equitable climate change adaptation in the City of Toronto (Ontario, Canada)? We address this question …

The Role Of Institutions In Job Teleworkability Before And After The Covid-19 Pandemic, Peter Norlander, Chris Erickson

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The teleworkability of jobs – whether they can and will be performed remotely – has been increasingly contested in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. To explain which jobs are teleworkable and why, we emphasize the institutional context of a job, including differences among firms, union representation, professional licensing requirements, sector, and employment models. Using a novel dataset of job characteristics extracted from the text of a large sample of online job advertisements from 2010-2021, we examine various explanations for change in the availability of remote job opportunities. Prior to the pandemic, private sector, non-union, and unlicensed jobs lagged federal …

From Bus Bans On Religious Advertisements To Beyond: Why Religion Is More Appropriately Classified As A Viewpoint Rather Than A Subject Matter, Anna Kukharenok

San Diego Law Review

This circuit split created the issue identified herein: Is a ban on religious advertisements—aimed at all religions equally—permissible because it constitutes a restriction of a subject matter, or is it impermissible because it constitutes restriction of a viewpoint? This narrow issue implies the existence of a broader issue: Should religion as a whole be classified as a subject matter or a viewpoint in order to avoid laborious and fact-intensive inquiries into each particular law? This Comment aims to answer this question through the lens of not only legal precedent, but policy perspectives as well. This Comment advances the position that …

Compulsory Military Service And Its Impact On Subsequent Civilian Wages: Evidence From Recent Young Veterans In South Korea, Kihong Park Sep 2022

Compulsory Military Service And Its Impact On Subsequent Civilian Wages: Evidence From Recent Young Veterans In South Korea, Kihong Park

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

Using the Youth Panel survey spanning the years from 2015 to 2018, this paper attempts to find new evidence on the relationship between veteran status and subsequent civilian wages in the Korean youth labor market. As the estimated returns to conscription obtained from OLS are biased due to the non-random selection of the conscripts, this study accounts for this selection on observables by implementing a nonparametric propensity score matching (PSM) method. Through the use of the PSM framework, this article provides some evidence in favor of the existence of negative wage impacts of compulsory military service, suggesting that the costs …

Covid-19 Signs In Tokyo And Kanagawa: Linguistic Landscaping For Whom?, Janice Nakamura

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

COVID-19 has dramatically transformed Japan’s linguistic landscape. This paper determines the types of COVID-19 store signs in Tokyo and Kanagawa and the extent to which they cater to the growing number of non-Japanese residents living in this highly populated urban region. Analysis of 293 COVID-19 signs shows that many are text-and- image monolingual Japanese signs that display multiple messages related to customer and staff policies. Although the stores predominantly prepare these signs, they are influenced by government policy, particularly those related to social distancing. Only a quarter of these signs is multilingual, and many contain Japanese and English only. Consequently, …

Impact Of Neighborhood Quality And Recent Life Stressors On Sleep Problems: A Longitudinal Study Of Adolescents At Risk For Maltreatment, Krithika Prakash, Joseph Tu, Angela Staples Sep 2022

Impact Of Neighborhood Quality And Recent Life Stressors On Sleep Problems: A Longitudinal Study Of Adolescents At Risk For Maltreatment, Krithika Prakash, Joseph Tu, Angela Staples

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

It is estimated that around 70% of adolescents are not getting sufficient sleep. The impact of poor sleep during adolescence is related to both increased psychopathology and poorer academic and social functioning. While studies have established a link at the community level between earlier school start times and poorer sleep, there remain open questions about other aspects of community such as neighborhood factors and stressful life events. In this study, we investigated the impact of three neighborhood factors (chaos, stability, and efficacy) and recent life stressors on adolescent (n = 1354) sleep habits at ages 12, 14, and 16 …

Public Interest Or Policy Diffusion: Analyzing The Effects Of Massage Therapist Municipal Licensing, Darwyyn Deyo, Kofi Ampaabeng, Conor Norris, Edward Timmons

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

Massage therapy is widely licensed by the states. However, municipalities also often passed massage therapist licensing, motivated by preventing prostitution. Using a novel dataset on municipal licensing and crime data from the FBI, we test if local massage therapist licensing reduced prostitution. We also test a policy diffusion hypothesis, in which cities pass responsive massage therapist licensing. We find that municipal massage therapist licensing does not lead to a reduction in prostitution, but we find support for the policy diffusion hypothesis, with municipalities up to 65% more likely to pass responsive licensing within three years of their neighbor doing so.

Past relational demography research has demonstrated the influence of demographic dissimilarity among employees on their work engagement and attrition. Little is known about how demographic dissimilarity affects individuals’ attraction to a team in the first place. The present research focused on the attraction component of the attraction-selection-attrition model to investigate factors that contribute to team attraction and their associated underlying processes. Specifically, we identified anxiety towards potential teammates as an affective response to cultural dissimilarity, which in turn influenced performance expectations and team attraction. We also examined implicit and explicit cognitions that might shape the impact of anxiety. To this …
