Challenging Subpar Servitudes, Samantha Kuo Oct 2022

Challenging Subpar Servitudes, Samantha Kuo

Chapman Law Review

"California is in desperate need of housing. 1 To address the former and underused golf courses. For example, the Riverwalk Golf Club in San Diego, California is being transformed into a mixed-use development and is expected to offer 930 apartment homes by 2025. 2 However, most attempts at transforming golf courses into housing are not as successful. A developer who wanted to build 443 residences on the Westridge Golf Club in La Habra, California, sued the city of La Habra based on allegations that the city unlawfully blocked the project. 3 Likewise, projects to build thirty-nine homes in Orange, California, …

An Interdisciplinary Legal Study Of The Organisation Of The Courts: The Methodological Consequences Of The Meeting Between Legal And Management Approaches (Penelitian Hukum Interdisipliner Pada Organisasi Peradilan: Pertemuan Pendekatan Hukum Dan Pendekatan Manajemen Serta Konsekuensi Metodologisnya), Dian Rositawati

The Indonesian Journal of Socio-Legal Studies

This article presents the relationship between legal principles and management principles in the judicial organization and how they affect the judiciary's performance. As an organization, the judiciary is bound by the rule of law principles, especially the principle of judicial independence, as stated in the constitution and laws. However, the courts as an organization are also influenced by management principles, which include viewing public organizations from efficiency, effectiveness, and service quality perspectives. This paper discusses the interaction and tension between these principles in a judicial organization and their methodological consequences. In the discussion about methodology, this paper will elaborate on …

Perceived New Risks To Construction Workers In Kuwait Due To Rising Temperatures, Ahmad M. Alharbi

Research Papers

This study aimed to examine the risks construction workers in Kuwait face due to increasing temperatures. The environmental conditions for construction workers include working in hot and humid environments, wearing protective clothing, and performing hard physical work. These aspects place them at an increased risk for occupational heat stress. The health impacts of occupational heat exposure for construction workers are heat-related diseases, occupational accidents/ injuries, urological diseases, dysfunctional reproductive system, reduced mental health and cognitive functioning, vision and eye problems, and death. Heat exposure affects workers' health through heat-related illnesses, including heavy sweating, dizziness, muscle pain, fatigue, skin itchiness, and …

A Descriptive Analysis Of Remote Work Adoption In The United States, Paul A. Hill, Amanda D. Ali, Lendel K. Narine, Debra M. Spielmaker Oct 2022

A Descriptive Analysis Of Remote Work Adoption In The United States, Paul A. Hill, Amanda D. Ali, Lendel K. Narine, Debra M. Spielmaker

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Advances in information and communications technology have enabled organizations to shift traditional work functions away from place or where work is accomplished to how work is accomplished (i.e., task facilitation). With the rise in remote work, there was a need to describe the adoption process by organizations in the United States. Given that the practice of remote work is considered an innovation, this quantitative study was guided by the theory of Diffusion of Innovations and followed a nonexperimental design with a correlational analysis, collecting cross-sectional data from a sample of organizational leaders in the United States (N = 1,259). Results …

The Asian Five Dragons: What’S The Relationship Of Confucianism And Gender Inequality?, Danny S. Craddock Oct 2022

The Asian Five Dragons: What’S The Relationship Of Confucianism And Gender Inequality?, Danny S. Craddock

Student Publications

Confucianism is not only a historically important belief system, but it also continues to be rooted in many societies today, particularly in East and Southeast Asia. The growing influence of some of these Confucian-ingrained societies on the international stage justifies expanding the limited literature present on Confucianism and its societal implications. Using a conceptualization of heavily influenced Confucian societies previously set out by earlier research, this paper evaluates the validity of the common age-old assumption that Confucianism is correlated with greater gender inequality, as determined by the World 2016 dataset. Specifically, research suggests that the opposite correlation might just as …

Cities In A Pandemic: Evidence From China, Badi H. Baltagi, Ying Deng, Jing Li, Zhenlin Yang Oct 2022

Cities In A Pandemic: Evidence From China, Badi H. Baltagi, Ying Deng, Jing Li, Zhenlin Yang

Center for Policy Research

This paper studies the impact of urban density, city government efficiency, and medical resources on COVID-19 infection and death outcomes in China. We adopt a simultaneous spatial dynamic panel data model to account for (i) the simultaneity of infection and death outcomes, (ii) the spatial pattern of the transmission, (iii) the inter-temporal dynamics of the disease, and (iv) the unobserved city- and time-specific effects. We find that, while population density increases the level of infections, government efficiency significantly mitigates the negative impact of urban density. We also find that the availability of medical resources improves public health outcomes conditional on …

Glenns Ferry Animal Shelter, Reyna Riemenapp Oct 2022

Glenns Ferry Animal Shelter, Reyna Riemenapp

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

My capstone project was an action-project. During the development of this project, I partnered with the Glenns Ferry, ID, animal shelter. My goal was to help this small town in Idaho with its animal shelter because it relies 100% on donations to care for its dogs. I was saddened to hear that the shelter was having trouble feeding the dogs, so I decided to help by collecting food, toys, and dog supplies. Aside from asking family, friends, and coworkers for donations, I also contacted local Zamzows pet and gardening stores for donations of food and dog supplies. Also, I decided …

Making Hazelwood Age-Appropriate: How Viewpoint Neutrality And Recontextualizing The Age-Appropriate Standard Might Save School-Sponsored Lgbt Speech, Rebecca Girardin Oct 2022

Making Hazelwood Age-Appropriate: How Viewpoint Neutrality And Recontextualizing The Age-Appropriate Standard Might Save School-Sponsored Lgbt Speech, Rebecca Girardin

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

Younger people are identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (henceforth “LGBT”) more than any previous generation. Likewise, there has been a proliferation of free-speech litigation involving student speech that discusses LGBT issues. Beyond just LGBT speech in school, there has been a recent resurgence in the discussion around the relationship between parents, students, school administrators, and school boards when it comes to regulating school-sponsored speech.

Besides the growing number of students identifying as LGBT, protecting LGBT speech in school is of particular importance because the manner in which a school deals with LGBT speech directly influences the mental health …

The Prevalence Of Domestic Servitude Among Child Domestic Workers In Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: Research Findings, Annabel Erulkar, Lemi Negeri, Eyasu Hailu Oct 2022

The Prevalence Of Domestic Servitude Among Child Domestic Workers In Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: Research Findings, Annabel Erulkar, Lemi Negeri, Eyasu Hailu

Adolescents and Young People

It is estimated that there are 17.2 million child domestic workers globally, most of whom are girls. Research related to this marginalized group is limited, with most at a small scale or subsumed in other topics, such as domestic workers generally. The dearth of evidence limits awareness about girls in such circumstances and inhibits the design and implementation of context-appropriate policy and program responses. This mixed-method study is one of the few large-scale studies to examine child domestic work, including its prevalence, the entry and experience of girls in this work, and levels of human trafficking, hazardous work, and illegal …

The Trouble With Court-Packing, Neil S. Siegel Oct 2022

The Trouble With Court-Packing, Neil S. Siegel

Faculty Scholarship

Wide-ranging public discussion of U.S. Supreme Court reform implicates fundamental questions of constitutional policy, norms, and law. This Article focuses on the reform proposal that poses the greatest threat to judicial legitimacy and independence: Court-packing. This Article contends that there has likely been a constitutional convention against Court-packing for a long time now, although it is uncertain whether the convention continues to exist given Senate conduct since 2016. This Article also maintains that Court-packing is not as free from constitutional difficulty as the conventional wisdom holds, even if the arguments for its constitutionality are stronger on balance. Most importantly, this …

Political Trust: Nature Or Nurture, Kahlan R. Canty Oct 2022

Political Trust: Nature Or Nurture, Kahlan R. Canty

Student Publications

This paper looked into the relationship between political trust, demographics (race and gender), and presidential election votes for 2012 and 2016. The purpose of this research was to see the baseline feelings of political trust in different demographics, as well as how those feelings of political trust changed depending on if they voted for in the winning candidate in the presidential election. Preliminary research has already been conducted on both of these topics; however, in this paper I sought to examine if an individual's race or gender affected the extent of a person's loss or gain in political trust when …

Cultural Humility Training For Mentors: Lessons Learned And Implications Of Youth Programs, Amy J. Anderson, April Riordan, Lavasha Smith, Bridget Hillard, Bernadette Sánchez Oct 2022

Cultural Humility Training For Mentors: Lessons Learned And Implications Of Youth Programs, Amy J. Anderson, April Riordan, Lavasha Smith, Bridget Hillard, Bernadette Sánchez

Journal of Youth Development

The current paper presents lessons learned from a research-to-practice partnership between mentoring program practitioners and researchers that focused on the development and implementation of a cultural humility training for volunteer mentors. Using multiple data sources (e.g., training materials, field notes, mentor surveys), we present a description of the research-to-practice partnership and the Culturally Smart Relationships pilot training content. We generate practice-oriented lessons to inform future cultural humility training work with staff and volunteers in youth programs. Our lessons reflect recommendations that emerged from five project phases: (a) organizational commitment to justice, equity, diversity, inclusion; (b) training curriculum and logistical planning; …

Challenges, Opportunities, And Adaptations Of A College Preparatory 4-H Youth Development Program During Covid-19, Emily M. Davis, Ann Sansing, Jasmine Harris-Speight, Mary Nelson Robertson, David Buys

Journal of Youth Development

SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) has proliferated across the United States, and in the process, it has disrupted all sense of normalcy. Because adolescents are in a critical period for growth and development, youth are particularly susceptible to negative impacts of disruption from COVID-19. Therefore, sustaining youth development programs is essential to ensuring positive youth development occurs despite significant challenges. Unfortunately, the implementation of programs that maintain safety precautions can be challenging. Many programs have been forced to either cancel all activities or to transition program elements to a virtual format. Rural Medical and Science Scholars (RMSS) program administrative staff made the decision …

Informing Practice Through Professional Development: An Interstate Urban Programming Study Tour, Vernelle Mitchell-Hawkins, Deborah Dietrich

Journal of Youth Development

Southeast Pennsylvania 4-H Extension educators identified a need for professional development in order to further develop current urban 4-H programs. The expectation was that increased awareness and knowledge would lead to increased skills competency in planning, implementing, and evaluating urban 4-H youth development programs. An interstate professional development program was developed to inform practitioners on positive youth development in urban communities. The 2-day program included on-site observations of urban programs and professional development on best practices. The event was scheduled as a study tour that involved intentional focus on practical applications of research theory for informal education. The Penn State …

Using Stem Camps To Improve Female Interest In Technology Careers, April H. Reed, Mark Angolia, Lyubov G. Sluder, Leslie R. Pagliari

Journal of Youth Development

Science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields have been traditionally entered by men, often establishing women as underrepresented in many of these fields. This research study focuses on participants at a STEM camp for middle- and high-school girls designed to introduce them to technology. The camp was held 4 times over 3 years, with many of the participants from rural areas, underrepresented by race and economic status. Sixty camp attendees completed pre- and post-camp surveys and are referred to as the intervention group. A control group of 200 middle- and high-school girls who did not attend the camp also took …

Analysis Of Green Marketing Orientations Of Green Hotels During Covid-19 With Fuzzy, Ceylan Bozpolat, Burcu Simsek Yagli

University of South Florida (USF) M3 Publishing

This study aims to examine the role of natural environmental orientation, environmental pressures of stakeholders and brand orientation in green marketing orientations of green hotel businesses in the Cappadocia region during the COVID-19 process. For this purpose, a total of six experts, three of which are green hotel managers and three academicians, were interviewed and the collected data were analysed through the fuzzy method, one of the multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) methods. Due to the limited number of studies in this context in the literature, the current study contributes to the literature. The causal relationships between many factors are analysed …
