Analyzing Business Research On The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act: Clusters, Gaps, And Future Directions, Richard A. Posthuma Nov 2022

Analyzing Business Research On The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act: Clusters, Gaps, And Future Directions, Richard A. Posthuma

American Business Review

This study comprehensively analyzed and summarized business-related research on the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA). Research on the FCPA is essential because sanctions for violations have grown substantially, increasing risks for multinational enterprises (MNEs). Recent fines exceeded $1 billion, and business executives were personally fined and imprisoned (Stanford Foreign Corrupt Practices Act Clearinghouse, 2021). Unfortunately, theory-based and empirically-validated business research has not kept pace with this increased risk. Performance mapping and science mapping pinpointed the most prolific academic fields, the most cited articles, and clusters of authors, journals, and keywords. Analyses identified gaps in the literature. Prior research focused on …

Efficient Supply Chain Contracting With Loss-Averse Players In Presence Of Multiple Plausible Breaches, Arijit Mitra, Sumit Sarkar Nov 2022

Efficient Supply Chain Contracting With Loss-Averse Players In Presence Of Multiple Plausible Breaches, Arijit Mitra, Sumit Sarkar

American Business Review

The legal literature distinguishes between the liquidated damage and the penalty clauses in contracts, and holds that penalties designed for the prevention of breach are excessive compared to the liquidated damages. In an efficient supply chain contract, the penalty must satisfy the participation and incentive compatibility constraints of the signatories. Considering loss-averse players, we have calculated optimal penalties in a supply chain contract and compared those with the liquidated damages. Two possible breaches are considered – a breach in quality of the delivery and a breach in the process. In the absence of any penalty, a process breach reduces the …

The Impact Of Covid-19 Shocks On Business And Gdp Of Global Economy, Reza Gharoie Ahangar, Myungsup Kim Nov 2022

The Impact Of Covid-19 Shocks On Business And Gdp Of Global Economy, Reza Gharoie Ahangar, Myungsup Kim

American Business Review

This study examines the relationship between COVID-19 shocks and GDP loss of different countries worldwide based on the seven scenarios of the epidemiological DSGE/CGE model of [McKibbin, W., & Fernando, R. (2020). The Global Macroeconomic Impacts of COVID-19: Seven Scenarios. Asian Economic Papers, 20(2): 1-30, MIT Press]. We implemented a panel data approach for 24 cross-sectional units with three periods and a general regression neural network. The economic and financial shocks consist of labor supply, equity risk premium, consumption demand, and government expenditure. The findings show that the consumption demand and equity risk premium shocks on GDP are more influential …

Migration, The Quality Of Life, And Economic Opportunities In The U.S. Revisited: Impacts Of Round-Trip Work Commute Time And Rent Or Single-Family Housing Prices, Richard J. Cebula Nov 2022

Migration, The Quality Of Life, And Economic Opportunities In The U.S. Revisited: Impacts Of Round-Trip Work Commute Time And Rent Or Single-Family Housing Prices, Richard J. Cebula

American Business Review

Given the importance to businesses of having a better understanding of factors that influence migration, this study argues that there are two dimensions of the quality of life and economic opportunities that have largely been ignored in previously published studies of migration patterns in the U.S.: the impacts of (1) the costs of commuting between one’s residence and one’s place of employment and (2) apartment rent-levels and single-family housing price levels. It is hypothesized here that the greater the commute time between one’s prospective place of residence and one’s prospective place of employment, the greater the costs associated with in-migration …

Inclusive Leadership To Guide Nursing’S Response To Improving Health Equity, Jacqueline Nikpour, Ronald L. Hickman, Dora L. Clayton-Jones, Rosa M. Gonzalez-Guarda, Marion E. Broome Nov 2022

Inclusive Leadership To Guide Nursing’S Response To Improving Health Equity, Jacqueline Nikpour, Ronald L. Hickman, Dora L. Clayton-Jones, Rosa M. Gonzalez-Guarda, Marion E. Broome

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

The purpose of this manuscript is to examine traditional models of leadership in nursing, and to provide a roadmap and specific recommendations for nurses at all levels to lead our profession through the next decade in achieving health equity. We examine current leadership frameworks in nursing and discuss ways to contemporize these frameworks to more explicitly center the expertise of clinicians and communities from historically marginalized backgrounds. Next, we examine the racial, gender, and able-bodied biases that impact nurses, and call upon nurses to examine and dismantle these biases. We discuss the roles of health systems and academic organizations in …

Lived Experiences Of Latino(A) College Students Enrolled In A Historically Black College & University (Hbcu), Gabriel Crosby Nov 2022

Lived Experiences Of Latino(A) College Students Enrolled In A Historically Black College & University (Hbcu), Gabriel Crosby

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For many first-generation Latino(a) college students, the college-setting is a new and scary place. Without the support of family and friends, the chances for them dropping out or not finishing their college education grow. Recognizing that Latinos(as) make up a growing segment of the college-going population, higher education institutions and their leaders must not only recruit individuals from this demographic population, but must also work to help these students remain enrolled and guide them to graduation. Institutions must be able to provide a welcoming campus culture and environment as a means of fostering student success. Historically Black College and Universities …

The Failed Federalism Of Affordable Housing: Why States Don't Use Housing Vouchers, Noah M. Kazis Nov 2022

The Failed Federalism Of Affordable Housing: Why States Don't Use Housing Vouchers, Noah M. Kazis

Michigan Law Review

This Article uncovers a critical disjuncture in our system of providing affordable rental housing. At the federal level, the oldest, fiercest debate in low-income housing policy is between project-based and tenant-based subsidies: should the government help build new affordable housing projects or help renters afford homes on the private market? But at the state and local levels, it is as if this debate never took place.

The federal government (following most experts) employs both strategies, embracing tenant-based assistance as more cost-effective and offering tenants greater choice and mobility. But this Article shows that state and local housing voucher programs are …

Shaky Ground: Educators At The Intersection Of Gender Diversity And Early Childhood Environments, Elizabeth Gragg Elizardi Nov 2022

Shaky Ground: Educators At The Intersection Of Gender Diversity And Early Childhood Environments, Elizabeth Gragg Elizardi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines the hidden curriculum of gender socialization in early childhood classrooms. Purposes of this study included exploring how teachers’ beliefs about gender are enacted in activities, roles, and relationships with children to inform and recommend future directions for gender conscious education and pedagogies. This dissertation includes an assessment of participants’ gender schema, an analysis of participant interviews and focus groups, field notes from classroom observations and artifact collection. This study draws on Brofenbrenner’s (2005) bioecological theory of human development, positioning teachers as a primary engine of development in a child’s life. Cognitive-developmental theories are forwarded to explain gender …

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

In addition to the direct health impacts of COVID-19, government and household mitigation measures have triggered negative indirect economic, educational, and food and health system impacts, hitting low-and middle-income countries the hardest and disproportionately affecting women and girls. We conducted a gender focused analysis on five critical and interwoven crises that have emerged because of the COVID-19 crisis and exacerbated malnutrition and food insecurity. These include restricted mobility and isolation; reduced income; food insecurity; reduced access to essential health and nutrition services; and school closures. Our approach included a theoretical gender analysis, targeted review of the literature, and a visual …

Exploring The Relationship Between Context And Effectiveness In Impact Assessment, Alan Bond, Jenny Pope, Angus Morrison-Saunders, Francois Retief Nov 2022

Exploring The Relationship Between Context And Effectiveness In Impact Assessment, Alan Bond, Jenny Pope, Angus Morrison-Saunders, Francois Retief

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Impact Assessment (IA) has been adopted worldwide typically to ensure the achievement of its goal(s), which might be one or more of sustainable development, environmental policy integration, and democratic governance. Researchers have developed and applied effectiveness frameworks in order to evaluate whether IA achieves its goal(s). The application of these frameworks often identifies some areas of ineffectiveness, and the frameworks are rarely transferable to other cases either within or across different jurisdictions, which makes national and international comparisons problematic. Context is frequently cited as a reason why ineffectiveness is identified in a case, and yet context is not clearly understood …

Avoiding Bias In The Search For Implicit Bias, Wilson Cyrus-Lai, Warren Tierney, Christilene Du Plessis, My Nguyen, Michael Schaerer, Elena Giulia Clemente, Eric Luis Uhlmann Nov 2022

Avoiding Bias In The Search For Implicit Bias, Wilson Cyrus-Lai, Warren Tierney, Christilene Du Plessis, My Nguyen, Michael Schaerer, Elena Giulia Clemente, Eric Luis Uhlmann

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

To revitalize the study of unconscious bias, Gawronski, Ledgerwood, and Eastwick (this issue) propose a paradigm shift away from implicit measures of intergroup attitudes and beliefs. Specifically, researchers should capture discriminatory biases and demonstrate that participants are unaware of the influence of social category cues on their judgments and actions. Individual differences in scores on implicit measures will be useful to predict and better understand implicitly prejudiced behaviors, but the latter should be the collective focus of researchers interested in unconscious biases against social groups.

Stereotypes And Judgments About American Indian Peoples: Results From An Experimental Study, Raymond Orr, Katelyn Sharratt, Muhammad Iqbal Oct 2022

Stereotypes And Judgments About American Indian Peoples: Results From An Experimental Study, Raymond Orr, Katelyn Sharratt, Muhammad Iqbal

Journal of Indigenous Research

Native tribes and peoples are the subject of significant public scrutiny and judgement. Not only are many political interests aligned against Natives, but the presence of racial stereotypes and active discrimination have created difficult conditions in which American Indians are often invalidated as a people or polity through the retraction of their “authenticity” as an Indian, as perceived by outsiders. The process by which Natives are made “inauthentic” has been explored extensively in narrative and qualitative-based research. However, studies using experimental methods to determine the presence of underlying factors, such as racial bias or stereotypes, are scarce. To fill this …

An Architectural Riddle: Billy Tripp's Minefield, Frédéric Allamel Oct 2022

An Architectural Riddle: Billy Tripp's Minefield, Frédéric Allamel

Study the South

"The Mindfield, the sculptural environment created by self-taught builder Billy Tripp, is an alternative to architecture, or at least a countermodel that brings a novel perspective to the discipline. Challenging present architectural principles, such as functionality, cost-effectiveness, building techniques, and materials, the Mindfield opens the way to new possibilities. An ever-evolving edifice not designed to be inhabitable, and whose raison d’être emerged late in the building process, the Mindfield positions itself at the antipodes of mainstream architecture, thus enriching the architectural discourse with its innovative experiments. In building the Mindfield, Tripp inaugurates a holistic art where architecture, sculpture, and literature …

Integrated Or Excluded: The Effects Of French Integration Policies On Immigrant Communities From 2000 To 2020, Johanna N. Soleil Oct 2022

Integrated Or Excluded: The Effects Of French Integration Policies On Immigrant Communities From 2000 To 2020, Johanna N. Soleil

Claremont-UC Undergraduate Research Conference on the European Union

Few issues are as important to European politics as integration, though research into the actual effect of integration policies on immigrant communities is sparse in Europe and especially in France. This paper examines through the data available to researchers how immigrant communities compare to native populations in terms of cultural, health, and economic characteristics. To this end the paper is organized as follows: the first section introduces the French political context and the cultural attitude towards immigrants. Next, the various methods of analysis are presented, and each of the previously mentioned attributes is analyzed in the French context as well …

A Reflection On The Challenges And Collaborative Potential In Working With Buddhist Studies Materials In East Asian Librarianship, Matthew Hayes Oct 2022

A Reflection On The Challenges And Collaborative Potential In Working With Buddhist Studies Materials In East Asian Librarianship, Matthew Hayes

Journal of East Asian Libraries

This article explores a set of shared challenges that tend to emerge for East Asian Librarians in working with Buddhist studies materials. It outlines how Buddhist linguistic conventions can give rise to an unpredictability in reference work, how its historical textual practices can complicate collections development, and how Buddhist temple archive management can make traditional approaches to research advising unreliable. It also proposes that these challenges provide distinct opportunities for collaboration across Chinese, Japanese, and Korean areas of bibliographic coverage. These challenges offer a chance for librarians to work together and develop a standard, field-wide toolset for working with these …

The Netherlands-Indies; Rethinking Post-Colonial Recognition From A Multi-Voiced Perspective, Nicole L. Immler Oct 2022

The Netherlands-Indies; Rethinking Post-Colonial Recognition From A Multi-Voiced Perspective, Nicole L. Immler

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

In the communication of pain, language matters. Telling someone to feel pain is not just a description of one’s pain, it is – as philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein informs us – also asking for recognition of that pain. This requires a shared language which communicates it. Do we need a new language which can communicate and recognize the pain of the colonial past more effectively? Commencing with the recent apology for waging “a colonial war” in Indonesia by the Dutch prime minister, this article suggests an intervention in post-colonial recognition politics by exploring the idea of the multi-voicedness. Multi-voicedness …

Cultural Exchange: Defining The Native American And African Slave Interaction At Rich Neck Plantation, Theartis R. Butler Oct 2022

Cultural Exchange: Defining The Native American And African Slave Interaction At Rich Neck Plantation, Theartis R. Butler

Theses and Dissertations

Surprisingly few studies of the history of American slavery have investigated the interconnectedness of Native Americans and Africans and African Americans. We now know Native Americans were instrumental in helping the first trans-Atlantic colonizers settle in the Americas. However, history shows that this alliance did not last, and settlers took Native American lands. While settlers dispossessed Indigenous peoples, they also shifted the sources of labor for their new plantations on unceded land. Native Americans were the first source of cheap, coerced labor. American slavery eventually brought Africans from their homes to the early American colonies. Africans had to learn and …

Lecturers’ Perceptions And Practices Of Humor In Efl Classrooms, Siti Fadhilah, Johannes Ananto Prayogo, Francisca Maria Ivone Oct 2022

Lecturers’ Perceptions And Practices Of Humor In Efl Classrooms, Siti Fadhilah, Johannes Ananto Prayogo, Francisca Maria Ivone

Jurnal Pendidikan: Teori, Penelitian, dan Pengembangan

This study aims to explore lecturers’ perceptions and practices of humor usage in EFL classrooms. This qualitative study used questionnaires and interview protocols to get data from two senior English lecturers who use humor in their classrooms at an English department of a public university in Indonesia. The result reveals that humor, particularly jokes and spontaneous humor are practical and beneficial for learning English in higher education. However, in delivering humor, the lecturers should consider the setting (time and place), college students’ vocabulary level, age, and sex; humor should not offend them culturally and be understandable.

Objects Of Belonging And Displacement; Artefacts And European Migrants From Colonial Indonesia In Colonial And Post-Colonial Times, Caroline Drieënhuizen Oct 2022

Objects Of Belonging And Displacement; Artefacts And European Migrants From Colonial Indonesia In Colonial And Post-Colonial Times, Caroline Drieënhuizen

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

As colonial Indonesia never was intended to be a “settler colony”, many Dutch citizens spent only a certain period of their lives there before returning to the Netherlands. However, there were also Europeans, many with Asian-European roots, who had called the colony home for generations and were forced to leave that home after 1945.

All these different types of colonial migrants were displaced and maintained, built and reinforced their relations with the country (whether it was the colony or the “motherland”) they had left. This transnationalism (or, as I argue here, imperial orientation) took shape not only legally or relationally …

Three Generations Later; Examining Transnationalism, Cultural Preservation, And Transgenerational Trauma In United States Indo Population, Jamie D. Stern

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This paper examines the relationship between transnationalism, cultural preservation, and transgenerational trauma in the United States (US) Indo population. The information being analysed was compiled by the author from two separate surveys which took place between 2012 and 2021. This data was initially intended to act as a census for the scattered US Indo community however the salient information necessitated that the census be ongoing and that another survey be developed to measure effects of lingering trauma which has been passed down generationally. The two surveys invited Indos from around the globe to participate in data collection, which led to …

Steps Towards Liberation For Low-Income Black Residents Through Anti-Racist And Counter-Racial Capitalist Community Development Practices, Natasha Moodie Oct 2022

Steps Towards Liberation For Low-Income Black Residents Through Anti-Racist And Counter-Racial Capitalist Community Development Practices, Natasha Moodie

Theses and Dissertations

Racial capitalism has historically and systematically disenfranchised Black residents in the United States of America. Racial capitalism perpetuates the racial wealth gap and continues to inhibit Black residents from accumulating wealth. I argue that the community development field must implement practices that address the disenfranchisement of Black residents by the systems of racial capitalism. This research aims to highlight community development processes and practices that counter the effects of racial capitalism on low-income Black residents. I conducted a case study on the City and County of San Francisco due to their anti-racist approach to housing and community development, specifically focusing …

Investigating The Relational Element Of Trust In Teacher-Principal Relationships: An Autoethnographic Case Study, Angela Bradley Oct 2022

Investigating The Relational Element Of Trust In Teacher-Principal Relationships: An Autoethnographic Case Study, Angela Bradley

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This autoethnographic case study was designed to investigate the relational aspect of trust, a characteristic of servant leadership, in the teacher-principal relationship. This trusting bond is an often overlooked, foundational element of a school’s success. I examined the role that trust plays in enhancing a school’s culture and how trust is established and maintained among one principal and teachers under my supervision. In addition, as researcher, I sought to uncover specific indicators that trust was present on a school campus. Finally, I sought to examine trust’s effects on collaboration and organizational commitment.

Through weekly reflections, I sought to examine my …
