The Women Of Owen Clinic And Their Impact On Rural Mental Health, Mallory Stanley
The Women Of Owen Clinic And Their Impact On Rural Mental Health, Mallory Stanley
Manuscripts
The mid-1900s was a pivotal moment in reforming mental health treatment in American Psychiatry. This movement becomes particularly clear when examining the championing work of two women, Dr. Thelma V. Owen and Dr. M. G. Stemmermann, at a rural mental health facility located in Huntington, WV: Owen Clinic Institute. While mental health stigma was at an extreme high among the general population, many factors aligned to allow for a new era of mental health care, including deinstitutionalization, World War II, and the advocation of professionals in the field. In West Virginia, no two people were more outspoken and active in …

Evaluating Healthcare Leaders: A Competency Assessment Of Rural Healthcare Management Within The Midwest, Heather Winkler
Evaluating Healthcare Leaders: A Competency Assessment Of Rural Healthcare Management Within The Midwest, Heather Winkler
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Rural healthcare facilities, which include critical access hospitals, are vulnerable to closure due to workforce shortages, low patient volumes, challenging payer and patient populations, and geographic isolation. Additionally, many rural communities entered the COVID-19 pandemic understaffed, under-serviced, facing inadequate healthcare infrastructures, and with limited clinical resources and equipment. This exploratory research aimed to measure the leadership competencies identified by the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) of healthcare leaders working in rural hospitals and clinics within the Midwest. Having expert leadership skills and competencies can significantly impact how an organization succeeds, both for the patients, staff, and community. In contrast, …

The Effect Of Classroom And Clinical Learning Approaches On Academic Achievement In Associate Degree Nursing Students, Jo Anne Carrick
Dissertations
While many students compete aggressively to enter into nursing schools, those who succeed have no guarantee they will be successful in their nursing studies, graduating, and passing the National Council Licensing Exam for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN®). This study's objective was to gain a better understanding of how nursing students approach learning and to determine what characterizes the successful student. The study's design was based on the theoretical framework of the students' approach to learning, which ultimately impacts on the students' learning outcome.
This study followed a non-experimental causal-comparative study design using the Revised Approach to Studying Inventory - Short Version …

Camp Roosevelt: A Case Study Of The Nya In Florida, Dave Nelson
Camp Roosevelt: A Case Study Of The Nya In Florida, Dave Nelson
Florida Historical Quarterly
In April 1940, Life magazine's cover story on "Government and Youth" updated an article the magazine had published on the youth problem in 1936. The cover featured a photograph of Mabel Sealey, an enrollee at Camp Roosevelt, a National Youth Administration (NYA) resident project in Ocala, Florida. The accompanying article, presented the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) as boys' work relief, while the NYA provided relief for girls.1 In the gendered language of the narrative and the photographic images, the masculine CCC project accomplished important work such as fire fighting and tree planting, while teaching its enrollees military discipline and job …

Discrimination, Acculturative Stress, And Academic Achievement In Emerging Adults, Rebecca Steele, Amanda Rosado, Nancy Hernandez, Elizabeth Brondolo
Journal of Vincentian Social Action
Researchers report an association of racial discrimination to academic achievement for racial/ethnic minority students. Racial discrimination is manifest on multiple levels, including interpersonal discrimination, discrimination in schools, and societal and cultural discrimination. Researchers have generally focused their efforts on examining the effects of one type of discrimination on academic achievement. Further, mediators of this relation have not been fully explored. In a sample of 78 college students, we found only interpersonal racial/ethnic discrimination, and not school-based or societal discrimination was negatively associated with GPA. However, the effects did not hold once controlling for demographic factors. We examined two potential mediators …
The Sisterarchy Of Indian Feminism, Shweta Sinha
The Sisterarchy Of Indian Feminism, Shweta Sinha
Journal of Vincentian Social Action
The paradigm of feminism in India is deeply entrenched in its socio-cultural-political-economic reality. It is an ever-evolving byproduct of patriarchy borne out of the caste-system, colonialism, urbanism (‘Westernism’), and capitalism. As a result, the plurality within Indian feminism is predicated on the multiple patriarchies that exist within the Indian society. Therefore, while parsing feminism in India, it is imperative to identify and acknowledge the various sub-groups and intersectionality that exist within the larger framework of women’s issues.
Amongst all the marginalized factions that exist within the feminist framework, this study attempts to investigate a specific caste/class-based intersectional perspective, i.e., Dalit …

From The Mouths Of Women: The Life Model Of Homelessness, Janeal M. White
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to identify commonalities in life events preceding a first episode of homelessness for women living in shelters in Texas. This built on the work of Nooe & Patterson (2010) who identified fourteen factors that contributed to increased risk of homelessness as visualized in the Ecology of Homelessness. While based on existing literature at the time, Nooe & Patterson may not have heard clearly the voices of women with lived experience. The current study sought to explore how these risk factors manifest in the lived experiences of women residing in Texas homeless shelters.
The significance …

Striving For Protection: Whistleblowers In Jordan, Wa'ed Alshoubaki, Michael Harris
Public Administration Faculty Research
Whistleblowers take it upon themselves to protect public goods and resources by blowing the whistle on corruption. Yet, they are at risk of facing retaliation from their employers, as well as of experiencing firing, unfair appraisal, and isolation at work. In this article, we investigate the extent of whistleblower protection in Jordan. We discuss whistleblowers’ significant role in reporting wrongdoings and fighting corruption, as well as the price that whistleblowers pay to protect the public interest. In this study, we used the protection analysis approach by identifying the potential risks to which whistleblowers are exposed. Specifically, we used official documents …

Pension Funds As An Infrastructure Financing Avenue: An Exploratory Study, Sanjay Kavishwar
Pension Funds As An Infrastructure Financing Avenue: An Exploratory Study, Sanjay Kavishwar
Management Dynamics
Development of infrastructure is a sine qua non of economic development. Development of agriculture depends, to a considerable extent, on the adequate expansion and development of irrigation facilities. Industrial progress depends on the development of power and electricity generation, transport, and communication facilities. Of course, if proper attention is not paid to the development of infrastructure, it is likely to act as a severe constraint on the economic development process of the countiy. As evidenced, India has reemerged as one of the fastest growing economies of the world. India could unleash its full potential, provided it improves its infrastructural facilities, …

A workshop entitled “Marketing Your RAPP to Effectively Reach Relative Caregivers” was developed and offered at the 2019 Brookdale Foundation Training Conference for professionals who work with kinship caregivers, or “Relatives as Parents Programs” (RAPP). The intention of this interactive brainstorming session was to give individual RAPP programs the opportunity to share and adopt proven effective methods to reach, attract, and enhance their own local or statewide caregiver programs. The attending group was comprised of over 50 individuals who operated RAPP programs that spanned the US. The three workshop facilitators (authors of this brief with 70 collective years of experience) …

GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy
The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted families across the globe. This study highlights how a multidisciplinary workgroup, Grandfamilies Outcome Workgroup (GrOW) operationalized a caregiver-centered data cycle to learn how COVID-19 has impacted grandfamilies across the United States. The National Grandfamilies and COVID-19 Wave I (n=600, June 2020) and Wave II (n=225, July 2021) surveys recruited grandfamilies nationwide through GrOW’s network of kinship community partners. Wave I survey results illuminated that all sources of social support were reduced for grandfamilies during the pandemic, except for online support groups. Wave II provided an opportunity to revise the survey to capture emergent issues relevant …

Effects Of Parental Incarceration: A Grandparent's Perspective, Katti J. Sneed, Cosette J. Mast
GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy
This qualitative study explored grandparents’ perceptions of parental incarceration effects on the grandchildren they are raising. Children of incarcerated individuals are directly affected by the high incarceration rate in the United States and often find themselves displaced from the people and environment they know. As one of the most common caregivers for children with incarcerated parents, grandparents offer a unique perspective on the effects that parental incarceration has on children. The study found that grandparents perceive that the effects of parental incarceration on children are diverse. Children represented in the study were negatively affected emotionally and behaviorally by parental incarceration, …

Exploring Household Food Insecurity And Inter-Generational Self-Help Club Involvement Among Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Due To Hiv/Aids In Vietnam, Lesley M. Harris, Hannah Nguyen, Andrew M. Winters, Gina Rosen, Nguyen D. Thang
GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy
Intergenerational Self-help Clubs (ISHCs), also known as “Empathy Clubs” in Vietnam may aid in improving quality of life and well-being for grandparent-headed households impacted by HIV/AIDS. However, less is known about how club membership impacts household food security. This cross-sectional, mixed methods study examines the differences in household food security and coping responses to food insecurity among 30 grandparents who are raising grandchildren due to HIV/AIDS, 15 who were involved in ISHC groups and 15 who were not involved in ISHC groups, in Hai Phong, Vietnam. In addition to qualitative interviews, all grandparents completed the Household Food Security Insecurity …

Correlates Of Custodial Grandparents’ Perceived Barriers To The Use Of Services, Bert Hayslip, Julian Montoro-Rodriguez, Jennifer Ramsey
GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy
Getting timely access to help, information, and a variety of services is paramount among the challenges of raising a grandchild, and grandparents face a variety of internal and external barriers in getting such help. The present pilot exploratory study focused on caregiving-related and personal resource variables best associated with minority grandparent caregivers’ perceptions of barriers to receiving services. In contrast to previous work, the present study focused on African American and Latino grandparent caregivers. Fifty grandparents (M age = 58.59) of minority status (African American, Latino, Philippine) raising their grandchildren completed measures assessing caregiver strain, social support, resilience, self-care, …

Political Attitudes, Outward Aggression, And Self-Directed Violence, Christopher Holloway
Thinking Matters Symposium
Violence has increased at political events and marches in the last several years, particularly during the Trump presidency and marked by the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Research has been conducted on approval of political violence, but little is known about political attitudes and how they relate to the likelihood of engaging in everyday generalized violence. Furthermore, violence against others and violence against the self, such as suicide, are usually treated and studied separately. This study hopes to identify what relationships, if any, exist between political attitudes and violence, both outward and self-directed. Participants (N = 153) completed …

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic requires urgent implementation of effective community-engaged strategies to enhance education, awareness, and inclusion of underserved communities in prevention, mitigation, and treatment efforts. The Texas Community-Engagement Alliance Consortium was established with support from the United States’ National Institutes of Health (NIH) to conduct community-engaged projects in selected geographic locations with a high proportion of medically underserved minority groups with a disproportionate burden of COVID-19 disease and hospitalizations. The purpose of this paper is to describe the development of the Consortium. The Consortium organized seven projects with focused activities to address COVID-19 clinical and vaccine trials …

Implementation Of A Decision Tree To Address Moral Distress, Tijuana Milton
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Translational and Clinical Research Projects
Healthcare workers (HCW) face daily challenges in the workplace environment. A relatively new problem called moral distress (MD) may present itself, but it may go unrecognized. The healthcare profession is being robbed of qualified personnel due to moral distress. The overall objective of this project was to help healthcare workers identify moral distress and seek resources to assist with the mitigation of moral distress. The outcome of this project demonstrated bedside HCWs showed higher levels of MD. Leadership must be intentional with providing education about the signs and symptoms of MD and assist employees to recognize and utilize available resources …
