The Impact Of Juvenile Offender Race On Public Perception Of Crime Seriousness, Megan Whitaker Jul 2022

The Impact Of Juvenile Offender Race On Public Perception Of Crime Seriousness, Megan Whitaker

Dissertations

Public perception of crime is an important focus of research, especially when considering juvenile offenders. However, there is very limited research in this area. This study looked at how the public perceives crime seriousness and how race of the juvenile offender impacts the overall seriousness rating. An online survey that included 15 crime scenarios was completed by 176 participants. It was hypothesized that a crime would be rated as more severe when the juvenile offender is African American as compared to a Caucasian juvenile offender. Results found that participants overall rated the seriousness of offenses as significantly higher for Caucasian …

Firewalls: A Necessary Tool To Enable Social Rights For Undocumented Migrants In Social Work, L Hermansson, A Lundberg, S Gruber, A Jolly, Et Al Jul 2022

Firewalls: A Necessary Tool To Enable Social Rights For Undocumented Migrants In Social Work, L Hermansson, A Lundberg, S Gruber, A Jolly, Et Al

School of Health Professions

Firewalls are clear divisions between border policing and the provision of basic social rights. They have a dual character: to ensure that no information collected with the purpose of safeguarding basic social rights should be shared for immigration control purposes; and that migrants should not be subject to immigration control when being present at, or in the vicinity, of religious, private and public institutions upholding and providing social rights. This article suggests a normative argument for ‘firewalls’ in the context of social work and develops the concept theoretically as a principle practised and negotiated at different scales.

Implementing A Screening Tool For Social Determinants Of Health In A Rural Primary Care Clinic, Kimberly S. Roberts

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Abstract The environment and conditions in which people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age are social determinants of health (SDOH). Specifically, SDOH are categorized into five domains: (a) economic stability, (b) education access and quality, (c) health care access and quality, (d) neighborhood and built environment, and (e) social and context communities. Inequities in these domains are associated with health disparities that lead to poorer health and quality of life. The aim of this quality improvement project was to implement the Protocol for Responding to and Assessing Patient Assets, Risks, and Experiences (PRAPARE) to screen patients’ SDOH …

Unearthing Historical Trauma To Advance Health Equity For Survivors Of Human Trafficking, Sandy Woo-Cater Jun 2022

Unearthing Historical Trauma To Advance Health Equity For Survivors Of Human Trafficking, Sandy Woo-Cater

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

In the last decade, the public health field has grown a strong interest in responding to issues related to human trafficking. This specific concentration in healthcare has made efforts to ensure this work includes culturally appropriate tools to serve patients. While curricula to guide health professionals in areas such as cultural competency, cultural responsiveness, or cultural humility exist, historical trauma is not often integrated in the understanding of health outcomes for patients experiencing human trafficking. This paper asserts that advancing health equity for these patients necessitates a deeper historical perspective.

“So, You Can Let Me Look At Your Phone?”: Detectives Obtaining Consent To Search Cell Phones, Stacy Dewald

Journal of Criminal Justice and Law

Issues regarding Fourth Amendment protections and police access to digital evidence have been an ongoing battle in the courts over the past few years. Despite growing literature on the importance of collecting digital evidence during criminal investigations, there is little research on how detectives obtain consent to get to digital evidence, particularly cell phones. The present study addresses this research gap by drawing upon participant-observation, in-situ interviews, and in-depth interviews of detectives in an American suburban police department. The data indicate that during suspect interviews, detectives attempt to obtain consent to search phones to avoid delays related to obtaining a …

Involuntary Sterilization Of Native American Women In The United States: A Legal Approach, Genesis M. Agosto Jun 2022

Involuntary Sterilization Of Native American Women In The United States: A Legal Approach, Genesis M. Agosto

Nebraska Law Review

United States law permitted involuntary sterilization of Native American women through federal policies and regulations during the 1970s. Although the federal laws regarding sterilization were facially neutral, the administrative acts implemented by the government had disparate impacts on minority and socially disadvantaged communities, particularly Indigenous women. A close analysis of these laws and administrative funding reveals that the government ultimately enabled involuntary sterilization of Indigenous women. As a result, Native American victims and their respective tribes should be entitled to some form of legal remedy by the federal government.

Native Americans, in general, represented a unique class of victims among …

Forging Paths To Interdisciplinary Research For Early Career Academics, Mai P. Trinh, Robert Kirsch, Elizabeth A. Castillo, Denise E. Bates

Management Faculty Publications

Interdisciplinary research is a promising approach with which to generate innovative solutions to real-world problems and create social value, yet it is a risky choice for early career academics (ECAs). This essay outlines the risks and rewards associated with interdisciplinary scholarship within the context of business schools. We use structuration theory as a guiding framework to identify how institutional structures can constrain the agency and interdisciplinary aspirations of ECAs and others who do not fit within the current narrow definitions of disciplinary excellence. Sharing examples from the authors’ journeys as ECAs from different disciplinary backgrounds who study leadership and management …

A Critical Discourse Analysis Of How Youth In Care Describe Social Support, Jared Israel Best Jun 2022

A Critical Discourse Analysis Of How Youth In Care Describe Social Support, Jared Israel Best

Dissertations and Theses

There are nearly 422,000 youth in foster care in the United States with 20,000 aging out each year. Youth who age out of care demonstrate worse outcomes in all areas (education, employment, homelessness, justice system involvement, and social support) compared to the general population. These outcomes represent an ideological production, or a production of knowledge regarding the discursive youth in care. Thus, dominant discourses of youth are informed and constitutive of these problematic outcomes. Similarly, youthhood is dominantly defined by risk and informed by peer groups and social relationships. This study presents findings from interviews with 22 youth preparing to …

Empathy In The Design Of Assistive Devices For Older Adults: An Exploratory Study With Portuguese Women, Daniela Silva, Alison Burrows, Paula Trigueiros

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Assistive Devices (AD) aim to enhance the autonomy of their users, among whom are older adults. However, older adults often have negative feelings towards these products, such as the fear of dependence, which in turn influence their acceptance and use. These feelings can result from the use of design approaches that focus merely on users’ physical abilities. This article argues for the importance of rethinking approaches to the design of AD by focusing on a holistic and empathic view of older people. It also seeks to contribute to a richer understanding of what independence and dependence means to older people. …

Significance Of Age-Friendly Co-Design From A Multi-Stakeholder Collaboration In Greenland, Sidse Carroll, Kamilla Nørtoft

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The world’s population is ageing, and there is increased attention on developing well-functioning age-friendly cities and communities. This requires addressing topics with complex socio-spatial dimensions and involving multiple stakeholders in the process. This also means including older people as active partners in the design process to create environments that reflect their needs and aspirations. In this paper, we present a study, where multiple stakeholders from a Greenlandic city worked together to co-design new neighbourhood spaces in a senior housing area. Approximately 50 older people were involved in the co-design process, and follow-up interviews were conducted with municipal stakeholders two months …

Tinder And Heartbeats: Wellbeing In The Use Of Dating Applications, Petra Salaric, Rebecca Cain, Emilene Zitkus, Valentijn Visch

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Currently, there are more than 1500 dating applications, allowing people to connect with a single swipe. However, there is a rising concern about the behaviour encouraged by these digital forms of interactions in relation to negative effects on user wellbeing. Using an evocative autoethnographic approach combined with literature review, this study aimed to explore potential connections between the interaction design, user interactions, and user experiences within dating applications by following weekly experiences over four dating applications. The experiences were recorded with a journal, then explored using emotion capture cards, and visualised in emotionally mapped timelines. It was found that even …
