In Summer of 2021, the L. Tom Perry Special Collections at the Harold B. Lee Library acquired volumes one and two of a collection of short stories called The Library of Fiction, or Family Story-teller. The first volume of this collection, originally released in monthly installments published by Chapman and Hall beginning in April of 1836, contains 42 pieces of literature written by a number of Victorian authors. Some of these authors (like Mary Russell Mitford, Edward Mayhew, G. P. R. James, and W. H. Wills) were popular in their time but have been largely forgotten. This is not …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
This study aims to explore advanced data skills -in particular technical skills expected of a data engineering (DE) professional. Descriptions and requirements for the DE jobs, one each from 50 US companies, were collected from three job sites. An automated text analysis was performed on the job descriptions to extract a list of technical skills and competencies required for the DE job in the industry. The extracted information was then manually synthesized and categorized by the author. Findings of the study are intended to be of use by information systems graduates looking to pursue advanced data education and for curricula …

Core Outcome Set Development For Childhood Epilepsy Treated With Ketogenic Diet Therapy: Results Of A Scoping Review And Parent Interviews, Jennifer H. Carroll, Kirsty J. Martin-Mcgill, J. Helen Cross, Mary Hickson, Emma Williams, Val Aldridge, Avril Collinson
School of Health Professions
PurposeClinical trials on childhood epilepsy treated with ketogenic diet (KD) use a wide range of outcomes, however, patients and decision-makers often do not perceive the outcomes used as the most important. We sought parental opinion on outcomes of importance and compared these to outcomes reported in published research.MethodsEthical approval (London-Surrey-REC19/LO/1680). A scoping review identified outcomes reported in previous studies of childhood epilepsy and KD. Parents were recruited from nine KD centres (UK), charities and social media (international), then interviewed (Jan-April 2020) to explore priority outcomes. Content analysis identified all outcomes in transcripts. Parent identified outcomes were compared with those in …

Emotional And Behavioural Responses To Covid-19: Explanations From Three Key Models Of Personality, Alison M. Bacon, Dino Krupić, Nese Caki, Philip J. Corr
School of Psychology
This review appraises evidence for the role of personality in Covid-19 related emotions and behaviours. Three key models of personality are considered: the Five factor Model, HEXACO model and Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory. In line with personality research more generally, most studies focus on the Five-Factor model. Key findings are that neuroticism is most associated with poor mental health, and extraversion is associated with a reluctance to socially isolate. Conscientiousness predicts compliance with safety guidelines, but also with fewer prosocial behaviours, particularly stockpiling. Research within the HEXACO framework largely confirms these findings, especially for emotionality and mental health. The additional HEXACO …

This study aimed to examine legal regulations on psychologists worldwide, such as those related to professional status and training models. An online survey was conducted by members of the Global Psychology Alliance and Asia Pacific Psychology Alliance. The survey included information on the legal status of psychologists in 55 countries. Representatives of 28 countries provided their responses, whereas information on the legal status of psychologists in 27 European countries was obtained from research data reported by the European Commission in 2016. We found that 80% of the 55 countries included in this study regulated professions in the field of psychology …

Effectiveness Of General Practitioner-Delivered Nutrition Care Interventions On Dietary And Health Outcomes In Adults With Diet-Related Chronic Conditions: A Systematic Review Protocol, Kathryn E. Asher, Mari Somerville, Shelley Doucet, Alison Luke, Lauren Ball, Stephan U. Dombrowski, Mary Hickson, Richelle Witherspoon
School of Health Professions
Objective: This systematic review will evaluate the effectiveness of nutrition care interventions delivered by general practitioners (GPs) versus usual care or no care on dietary and health outcomes in adults with diet-related chronic conditions or risk states. Introduction: GPs are usually the first contacts for patients with diet-related chronic conditions in the healthcare system. While there is some evidence that GPs can be effective in delivering nutrition care for a number of outcomes, an update to the evidence is required as well as an examination of which components are associated with positive outcomes in order to inform future care. Inclusion …

Development And Validation Of The Short Version Of The Sense Of Humor Scale (Shs-S), Sonja Heintz, Willibald Ruch, Chloe Lau, Donald H. Saklofske, Paul Mcghee
School of Psychology
Abstract. Humor training has become increasingly popular to enhance the “sense of humor” and well-being and to decrease depressive symptoms. Despite the wide applications of these training programs, the assessment of training efficacy has attracted less attention. The Sense of Humor Scale (SHS; McGhee, 1996 , 1999 ) recently was expanded to a long version (SHS-L) to enhance its internal consistency ( Ruch & Heintz, 2018 ). At the same time, there is also the need for a brief version of this scale. The purpose of the present study is to develop a short version (SHS-S) in both German- and …

The Impact Of A Medicare Public Health Emergency Policy Change For Continuous Glucose Monitors On Utilization And Total Cost Of Care For Diabetes, Momoka Abe, Katie Norton, Jenifer Smith
Providence Pharmacy PGY1 Program at Providence Portland and Providence St. Vincent Medical Centers 2022
Home glucose monitoring was revolutionized in 1999 when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first professional continuous glucose monitor (CGM). With the advancements in technology, newer CGMs are available for personal use and have greatly impacted the way diabetes is managed. Although there are data regarding the benefits of CGMs in lowering hemoglobin A1c, data is currently lacking regarding whether the use of CGM affects the number of hospitalization/emergency department visits as well as the effect on cost of care. In addition, while CGMs have been traditionally used in patients with type 1 diabetes due to their …

Introduction Recurrent pulmonary exacerbations lead to progressive lung damage in cystic fibrosis (CF). Inhaled medications (mucoactive agents and antibiotics) help prevent exacerbations, but objectively measured adherence is low. We investigated whether a multi-component (complex) self-management intervention to support adherence would reduce exacerbation rates over 12 months. Methods Between October 2017 and May 2018, adults with CF (aged ≥16 years; 19 UK centres) were randomised to the intervention (data-logging nebulisers, a digital platform and behavioural change sessions with trained clinical interventionists) or usual care (data-logging nebulisers). Outcomes included pulmonary exacerbations (primary outcome), objectively measured adherence, body mass index (BMI), lung function …
