A Recovery Pathway After Covid-19 Teacher Burnout, Laura Sokal, Lesley Eblie Trudel Dec 2022

A Recovery Pathway After Covid-19 Teacher Burnout, Laura Sokal, Lesley Eblie Trudel

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

Burnout in the helping professions, including teaching, has been well documented for over fifty years and has been captured within two seminal models offered by Maslach and her colleagues. For this study we interviewed 22 teachers bi-weekly to determine whether these models captured their COVID-19 pandemic work experiences during the 2020–2021 school year. Only one teacher, however, left work on a medical leave and then returned to work after burning out, and therefore provided a case study of the processes of both teacher burnout and recovery under pandemic conditions. The existing models of burnout were upheld as salient in understanding …

Burns And Jean Armour, Ellisland, 1788: A Letter Fragment In The Roy Collection, Patrick Scott

Studies in Scottish Literature

Describes and illustrates a two-sided fragment of Robert Burns's letter from Ellisland to his wife Jean Armour, in Muchline, from September 12, 1788, concerning her move to join him, and news for his brother Gilbert. Only four letters from Burns to Jean are now known; the main body of this letter was printed by Waddell in 1869, and was later recorded in the Honresfield Collection (now the Blavatnik-Honresfield Collection), but this section, now in the G. Ross Roy Collection at the University of South Carolina, was snipped off by the then-owner Mary MacLaughlan Nicolson for a collector before Waddell saw …

Scott’S Reparative Land Ethic, Nigel Leask

Studies in Scottish Literature

A review essay discussing Susan Oliver's "important and convincing" book Walter Scott and the Greening of Scotland: Emergent Ecologies of a Nation (Cambridge University Press, 2021), noting Scott's land ethic and active role in managing his estate at Abbotsford and in afforestation, and suggesting that Oliver's book presents "a cumulative literary history of Scotland’s ecologies," so that Scott's poetry and novels "assume a new relevance for 21st century readers".

A New Study Of Cunninghame Graham, Carla Sassi Dec 2022

A New Study Of Cunninghame Graham, Carla Sassi

Studies in Scottish Literature

Surveys the steady growth of interest in the Scottish fin-de-siècle writer, adventurer, socialist M.P., and nationalist leader R. B. Cunninghame Graham (1852-1936), and reviews Lachlan Munro's "timely and important study" R. B. Cunninghame Graham and Scotland: Party, Prose, and Political Aesthetic (Edinburgh University Press, 2022), judging it an "inspiring and innovative investigation," and suggesting that Cunninghame Graham's "construction and performance of his identities as a writer, adventurer, politician and activist should indeed be seen as an artistic expression in its own right."

Cocaine Sensitizes The Cd4+ T Cells For Hiv Infection By Co-Stimulating Nfat And Ap-1, Adhikarimayum Lakhikumar Sharma, Dylan Shafer, Daniel Netting, Mudit Tyagi Dec 2022

Cocaine Sensitizes The Cd4+ T Cells For Hiv Infection By Co-Stimulating Nfat And Ap-1, Adhikarimayum Lakhikumar Sharma, Dylan Shafer, Daniel Netting, Mudit Tyagi

Center for Translational Medicine Faculty Papers

The productive infection of HIV, which generates new viral progeny, depends on the activation status of the cell. In this study, we found cocaine exposure sensitizes partially active CD4+ T cells and makes them poised for productive HIV infection. We discovered that cocaine treatment enhances the metabolic state of the cells by co-stimulating several transcription factors, mainly NFAT and AP-1, the two transcription factors, which specifically play a crucial role in enhancing both HIV and the overall cellular gene expression in T cells. We found that cocaine-induced AP-1 works in tandem with NFAT to boost HIV transcription. The enhanced HIV …

The development of animal models to study cell death in the brain is a delicate task. One of the models, that was discovered in the late eighties, is the induction of neurodegeneration through glucocorticoid withdrawal by adrenalectomy in albino rats. Such a model is one of the few noninvasive models for studying neurodegeneration. In the present study, using stereological technique and ultrastructural examination, we aimed to investigate the impact of short-term adrenalectomy (2 weeks) on different hippocampal neuronal populations in Wistar rats. In addition, the underlying mechanism(s) of degeneration in these neurons were investigated by measuring the levels of insulin-like …

Work-Family Spillover And Depression: Are There Racial Differences Among Employed Women?, Ariane L. Rung, Evrim Oral, Edward S. Peters Dec 2022

Work-Family Spillover And Depression: Are There Racial Differences Among Employed Women?, Ariane L. Rung, Evrim Oral, Edward S. Peters

School of Public Health Faculty Publications

The intersection of work and family life can be a source of burden (negative) and a source of growth (positive). Negative work-to-family and family-to-work spillover have been linked to poor mental health, while positive work-to-family and family-to-work spillover have been linked to improved health outcomes. Less is known about these relationships in racial subgroups. Louisiana, USA, has a large proportion of African Americans, providing a unique population in which to study these relationships. The objectives of this study were to examine, among a sample of women in southern Louisiana in 2017, levels of work-family spillover by race and how the …

Knowledge transfer among research disciplines can lead to substantial research progress. At first glance, astronaut health and rare diseases may be seen as having little common ground for such an exchange. However, deleterious health conditions linked to human space exploration may well be considered as a narrow sub-category of rare diseases. Here, we compare and contrast research and healthcare in the contexts of rare diseases and space health and identify common barriers and avenues of improvement. The prevalent genetic basis of most rare disorders contrasts sharply with the occupational considerations required to sustain human health in space. Nevertheless small sample …

Nitrous Oxide Production And Isotopomer Composition By Fungi Isolated From Salt Marsh Sediments, Birch Maxwell Lazo-Murphy, Samantha Larson, Sydney Staines, Heather Bruck, Julianne Mchenry, Annie Bourbonnais, Xuefeng Peng Dec 2022

Nitrous Oxide Production And Isotopomer Composition By Fungi Isolated From Salt Marsh Sediments, Birch Maxwell Lazo-Murphy, Samantha Larson, Sydney Staines, Heather Bruck, Julianne Mchenry, Annie Bourbonnais, Xuefeng Peng

Faculty Publications

The emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O), a potent greenhouse gas and ozone-depleting agent, have been steadily increasing from coastal environments, such as salt marsh sediments, as a result of anthropogenic nutrient loading. Biotic processes, including nitrification and denitrification, are the largest sources of N2O from salt marsh sediments. While it is assumed that the bulk of N2O from salt marsh sediment is produced by nitrification and bacterial denitrification, recent reports suggest fungal denitrification may contribute significantly. In this study, four fungi capable of growth under sulfidic conditions were isolated from salt marsh sediments in …

Campaigners, Capitalizers, And Cooperators: A Typology Of Professional Identities Of Physician-Researchers Who Care For Patients While Recruiting Them To Industry-Sponsored Clinical Trials, Romiya Felecia Glover Barry

Doctor of Philosophy in Translational Health Sciences Dissertations

The critical phase for a successful clinical trial is timely accrual of research participants. Interventions to improve the outcome of recruiting activities have been developed to address the research structure of clinical trials, the administrative and design burdens of study protocols, the lack of awareness and acceptance of trials from patients and clinicians, and the insufficient research training for trial investigators. Engagement with potential clinical trial participants is lower than expected with a contributing factor being that investigators do not identify and approach all potential participants. The behaviors of physician-researchers responsible for recruiting and enrolling their patients into clinical trials …

The Congruent Constitution (Part Two): Reverse Incorporation, Jay S. Bybee Dec 2022

The Congruent Constitution (Part Two): Reverse Incorporation, Jay S. Bybee

BYU Law Review

In Bolling v. Sharpe (1954), a companion case to Brown v. Board of Education, the Supreme Court thought it “unthinkable” that the Equal Protection Clause would not apply to the federal government as well as the states and declared it “reverse incorporated” through the Due Process Clause of the Fifth Amendment. The Equal Protection Clause is the most familiar example of reverse incorporation, but it is neither the first nor the only provision of the Constitution that, by its terms, applies to the states alone, but which the Supreme Court has made applicable to the federal government through the Due …

Abolishing The Evidence-Based Paradigm, Erin Collins Dec 2022

Abolishing The Evidence-Based Paradigm, Erin Collins

BYU Law Review

The belief that policies and procedures should be data-driven and “evidence-based” has become criminal law’s leading paradigm for reform. This evidence-based paradigm, which promotes quantitative data collection and empirical analysis to shape and assess reforms, has been widely embraced for its potential to cure the emotional and political pathologies that led to mass incarceration. It has influenced reforms across the criminal procedure spectrum, from predictive policing through actuarial sentencing. The paradigm’s appeal is clear: it promises an objective approach that lets data – not politics – lead the way and purports to have no agenda beyond identifying effective, efficient reforms. …

Nontraditional Investors, Jennifer S. Fan Dec 2022

Nontraditional Investors, Jennifer S. Fan

BYU Law Review

In recent years, nontraditional investors have become a major player in the startup ecosystem. Under the regulatory regime of U.S. securities law, those in the public realm are heavily regulated, while those in the private realm are largely left alone. This public-private divide, which is a fundamental organizing principle of securities law, has eroded with the rise of nontraditional investors. While legal scholars have addressed the impact of some of these nontraditional investors individually, their collective impact on deal terms, deal timelines, due diligence, and board configuration has not been discussed in a holistic manner; neither has their impact on …

America The Divisible: Local Taxes And The Salt Subsidy, Matthew S. Johnson Dec 2022

America The Divisible: Local Taxes And The Salt Subsidy, Matthew S. Johnson

BYU Law Review

The state and local tax (SALT) deduction subsidizes localities in a way that has not fully been appreciated by policymakers, practitioners, or academics. While the state portion of the SALT deduction captures headlines and receives significant attention from academics, the local portion has been overlooked. Local taxes introduce concerns that are not relevant to state-levied taxes. The local tax deduction provides a greater subsidy, per capita, for wealthy localities than it does for economically heterogeneous or less wealthy localities. This Note is the first to quantify the subsidy received by localities through the SALT deduction. This Note contributes to the …

Hiv-Seropositive Patients’ Experiences With Social Workers: A South African Hiv+ Social Worker’S Reflective Log, Delarise Maud Mulqueeny

The Qualitative Report

Social workers play a pivotal role in HIV-seropositive patients’ treatment and care within South African public antiretroviral treatment (ART) programs. This article is a reflective log of an HIV-seropositive social worker’s observations and reflections on her positionality during a study on HIV-seropositive patients’ experiences of the public ART program in eThekwini, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The primary investigator (PI) utilized various tools and techniques including reflexive bracketing, participatory action research and a reflexive diary to navigate a sensitive study. This was while being cognizant of the fluidity of her insider/outsider positionality. The disclosure of the PI’s HIV-seropositive status culminated in all …

Robert Burns To Maria Riddell, A Lost Burns Manuscript And A Victorian Facsimile, Patrick Scott, Ronnie Young

Studies in Scottish Literature

Reviews the textual history of Robert Burns's brief letter to Maria Riddell, in spring 1795, in Dumfries, mentioning the miniature portrait by Alexander Reid; notes that the manuscript, owned in the late 19th century by Dr Thomas C.S. Corry of Belfast, and later by John Gribbel of Philadelphia, cannot now be located; and describes and illustrates the facsimile made of it in 1864 for Vincent Brooks in the Autographic Mirror, now the only source of this letter manuscript available to the Glasgow editorial team for the forthcoming Oxford edition of Burns's Correspondence.

Equivalent Hazard Magnitude Scale, Yi Victor Wang, Antonia Sebastian Dec 2022

Equivalent Hazard Magnitude Scale, Yi Victor Wang, Antonia Sebastian

Institute for ECHO Articles and Research

Hazard magnitude scales are widely adopted to facilitate communication regarding hazard events and the corresponding decision making for emergency management. A hazard magnitude scale measures the strength of a hazard event considering the natural forcing phenomena and the severity of the event with respect to average entities at risk. However, existing hazard magnitude scales cannot be easily adapted for comparative analysis across different hazard types. Here, we propose an equivalent hazard magnitude scale to measure the hazard strength of an event across multiple types of hazards. We name the scale the Gardoni Scale after Professor Paolo Gardoni. We design the …
