Background Many male prison leavers have significant mental health problems. Prison leavers often have a history of trauma, ongoing substance misuse and housing insecurity. Only a minority of prison leavers receive mental health care on release from prison. Objectives The aim of the Engager research programme was to develop and evaluate a theory- and evidence-informed complex intervention designed to support individuals with common mental health problems (e.g. anxiety, depression) and other complex needs, including mental health comorbidity, before and after release from prison. Methods In phase 1, the intervention was developed through a set of realist-informed substudies, including a realist …

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has had a significant impact worldwide, particularly in middle- and low-income countries. While this impact has been well-recognized in certain age groups, the effects, both direct and indirect, on the neonatal population remain largely unknown. There are placental changes associated, though the contributions to maternal and fetal illness have not been fully determined. The rate of premature delivery has increased and SARS-CoV-2 infection is proportionately higher in premature neonates, which appears to be related to premature delivery for maternal reasons rather than an increase in spontaneous preterm labor. There is much room for expansion, including long-term data …

Metasoftware: Building Blocks For Legal Technology, Houman Shadab

Articles & Chapters

This Article develops a novel concept in information technology called metasoftware. It then applies the concept of metasoftware to developing legal technology.

Metasoftware enables users to create the software of their choosing and stands in sharp contrast to traditional, functional software that is intended for a particular purpose or a defined range of tasks. Functional software is the default type of software that is currently produced and includes word processing, email, social networking, enterprise resource management, online marketplaces, and video game software. Metasoftware, by contrast, is not functional. Metasoftware presents the user with a blank slate upon which to build …

Lawyers And The Lies They Tell, Bruce Green, Rebecca Roiphe Jan 2022

Lawyers And The Lies They Tell, Bruce Green, Rebecca Roiphe

Articles & Chapters

Noting that the First Amendment protects lies about the government made in the public square, this article explores whether lawyers’ free speech rights ought to be different from that of other speakers. The law holds lawyers to a more demanding standard of conduct than others when it comes to aspects of lawyers’ fiduciary relationships with courts and clients. But how much more demanding can the law be when it comes to lawyers’ speech — in this case, false political speech? Applying the current First Amendment framework, we question the bar’s assumption that lawyers’ speech outside of these contexts can be …

Trauma-Informed Forensic Mental Health Assessment: Practical Implications, Ethical Tensions, And Alignment With Therapeutic Jurisprudence Principles, Julie Goldenson, Stanley Brodsky, Michael L. Perlin

Articles & Chapters

The need for trauma-informed practice is well recognized across mental health and legal settings; however, relatively little has been written about its application in forensic mental health assessment. This paper focuses on trauma-informed assessment of criminal justice involved individuals, given the high rates of trauma exposure and related sequelae in this population. A trauma-informed lens allows forensic mental health examiners to assess examinees in the context of their developmental histories and lived experience. Such a lens also has implications for the entire assessment process in terms of interviewing, psychological testing, diagnostic conclusions, feedback, and the provision of testimony and educating …

How To Bring Your Kids Up Queer: Family Law Realism, Then And Now, Kris Franklin, Noa Ben-Asher Jan 2022

How To Bring Your Kids Up Queer: Family Law Realism, Then And Now, Kris Franklin, Noa Ben-Asher

Articles & Chapters

This essay, in honor of Paula Ettelbrick’s vast contributions to family law, examines a new site of conflict - the legal treatment of transgender children and youth - for which Ettelbrick’s work, alongside Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’s seminal essay, How to Bring Your Kids up Gay (1991) are fundamental. We apply what we believe to be Ettelbrick’s emphasis on having legal structures recognize the reality and lives of queer people – what we call “family law realism” – to the current social and legal struggles that are unfortunately being fought upon the bodies of transgender identified children and youth. We recommend …

Culture And Fair Use, Michael Goodyear Jan 2022

Culture And Fair Use, Michael Goodyear

Articles & Chapters

The intersections of race and copyright have been underexamined in legal scholarship, despite repeated calls for further scrutiny. The scholarship has so far focused primarily on identifying where copyright has fallen short in protecting the creative works of artists of color. This Article, instead, hopes to offer one viable solution for creating more inclusivity of different cultures in copyright: the approval of cultural adaptations under fair use.
Cultural adaptations—the transforming of preexisting works to reflect the cultural and social mores and norms of a different group—would appear on first glance to be prohibited as derivative works, which, under the Copyright …

Returning To The Start? Federal Bipa Claims After Transunion V. Ramirez, Michael Goodyear

Articles & Chapters

The Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act, more commonly known as “BIPA,” was the first statute to protect biometric privacy in the United States when it was passed in 2008. Although Texas and Washington have since passed their own biometric privacy laws, and other states have protected biometric information as part of more general data privacy legislation, BIPA remains the most powerful such law in the country due to being the only biometric privacy law to contain a private right of action. BIPA has also proven to be an important precedent for other states, such as New York, that are currently …

Synchronizing Copyright And Technology: A New Paradigm For Sync Rights, Michael Goodyear Jan 2022

Synchronizing Copyright And Technology: A New Paradigm For Sync Rights, Michael Goodyear

Articles & Chapters

Embedded in a copyright owner’s musical work or sound recording is the synchronization, or sync right. One of the least discussed aspects of music copyright, considerations about sync have come to the fore as the world has increasingly moved from the real world to the virtual. The COVID-19 pandemic has spurred thousands of activities and events to go online. With many of these involving music, the shift to the virtual world has raised new questions about the extent of sync rights.

Traditionally, sync rights were meant to require licenses for the use of music in timed-relation to a film or …

This paper aims to provide guidelines for neuropsychological evaluation, management, and rehabilitation of CRCI in breast cancer patients based on current research. This paper also aims to discuss current research on proposed mechanisms of action for CRCI, the cognitive domains affected in CRCI, and significant bio-psycho-social risk factors impacting CRCI.

Two Buried And Stacked Ice Masses Dated To Early And Late Pliocene; Ong Valley, Antarctica, Marie Bergelin Jan 2022

Two Buried And Stacked Ice Masses Dated To Early And Late Pliocene; Ong Valley, Antarctica, Marie Bergelin

Theses and Dissertations

A debris rich ice core was collected from a buried ice mass in Ong Valley, located in Transantarctic Mountains in Antarctica. Measured cosmogenic nuclide concentrations in quartz obtained from the ice core were used to determine the age of the buried ice mass and infer the processes responsible for the emplacement of the debris currently overlaying the ice. Such ice masses are valuable archives of paleoclimate proxies; however, the preservation of ice beyond 800 kyrs is rare and therefore much effort has been recently focused on finding ice that is older than 1 Ma. In Ong Valley, the large, buried …

The Driving Forces Of Academic Integrity: A Survey Of Communication Disorder Students, Mary Ellen Huston Jan 2022

The Driving Forces Of Academic Integrity: A Survey Of Communication Disorder Students, Mary Ellen Huston

Theses and Dissertations

Academic dishonesty has been a pervasive problem in universities for decades, however, there has been limited research linking allied health students to specific cheating behaviors. For students studying to enter allied health fields, academic dishonesty is problematic as the health and safety of their clients is at risk. To date, there has been no research focused on the academic integrity of students enrolled in programs leading to a career in speech language pathology. This quantitative study explored the theories of reasoned action, neutralization, and motivation as they relate to academic dishonesty among SLP students. The study combined a slightly modified …

Performance Of The Shortened Liquid Cooling Warming Garment During Simulated Emergency Eva, Sophie Marie Bielawski Jan 2022

Performance Of The Shortened Liquid Cooling Warming Garment During Simulated Emergency Eva, Sophie Marie Bielawski

Theses and Dissertations

Surface temperatures during extravehicular activity (EVA) in low Earth orbit range from -157°C to 121° C. Although spacesuits shield astronauts from such inhospitable extremes, metabolic heat production due to physical exertion is trapped within the garment, leading to increased internal temperature. Cooling garments are utilized to maintain human thermal equilibrium. NASA’s Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garment (LCVG) has been in use for decades. Koscheyev, Leon, and colleagues developed a physiologically designed Shortened Liquid Cooling Warming Garment (SLCWG) at the University of Minnesota, focused on increasing the efficiency of the garment to support thermal balance. The current study assessed the thermoregulatory …

Rock Physics Based Velocity-Porosity Correlations Developed For Estimation Of The Elastic Properties Of The Bakken Formations Of The Williston Basin, North Dakota, Lynn D. Helms

Theses and Dissertations

Oil production from the Bakken Shale in North Dakota has benefitted from significant technological advancements since its beginning approximately two decades ago. Most of the advancements resulted from better characterization of shales, which are very heterogeneous and their properties vary at different scales. The need for costly operations such as drilling long laterals and multi-stage hydraulic fracturing for production from these unconventional reservoirs, signifies the importance of understanding the physical and mechanical properties of these formations in order to reduce the risk margins and improve project economics at diffetent phases of the life of the field. Rock physics is a …

Origin Of Red Sequence Barred Spiral Galaxies, Jenica Lesser Jan 2022

Origin Of Red Sequence Barred Spiral Galaxies, Jenica Lesser

Theses and Dissertations

Spiral galaxies contain spiral arms that are sites of ongoing star formation, typically making these galaxies appear blue in color. Several studies, however, have recently found that a small fraction of cluster spiral galaxies (~10%) appear red in color. These studies have proposed several mechanisms to explain the red color of spiral galaxies, including bar instabilities. The research goal of this thesis is to contrast and compare imaging data for a sample of face-on red-sequence (RS) and non-red-sequence (NRS) barred spiral galaxies selected from 67 low-redshift galaxy clusters. These data were collected from observations obtained using the 3.6-meter Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, …

Exploring [2+2] Photoreaction To Synthesize Cyclobutane Di- And Tetracarboxylic Acid Building Blocks From Biomass-Derived Precursors, Dominic Nkafu Nkemngong

Theses and Dissertations

Materials are a vital part of human life, as such, it is important that the precursors to these materials are sustainable. Currently, these precursors are synthesized by the oxidation of petroleum-derived hydrocarbons. Petroleum is not sustainable and is feared to deplete soon. Derivatizing the currently available biomass-based building blocks will diversify and increase the number of precursors for materials and gradually reduce our reliance on petrochemicals. The carboxylic dianhydride, CBDAN-1, a potential biomass-derived precursor for material synthesis, was synthesized from the photodimerization of maleic anhydride or the dehydration of CBTA-1. CBTA-1 was synthesized from the photodimerization of maleic and fumaric acids …
