Up In Flames: Using Anthropology To Analyze The Increasing Cremation Rates In North Dakota, Natalie Anne Basta
Up In Flames: Using Anthropology To Analyze The Increasing Cremation Rates In North Dakota, Natalie Anne Basta
Sociology and Anthropology
Cremation rates within North Dakota, and the greater US, have been rapidly increasing over the recent decades. Funeral directors, coroners, and death investigators alike have noticed the increase; however, nobody has made a positive determination for why the increase was occurring. Using an anthropological lens, I evaluated the state of cremation with North Dakota and with the use of GIS analysis and interviews with local funeral directors, I was able to determine that there is not one specific reason for the rising cremation rates. Instead, there are multiple factors at play, one of which is cost.
Framing Fashion Sustainability In Fashion Magazines, Kristen Ann Mohammadi
Framing Fashion Sustainability In Fashion Magazines, Kristen Ann Mohammadi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study explores the framing, dominant frame, story focus, and tone of sustainable fashion coverage in prominent fashion magazines, Vogue and Refinery29, seeking to understand if the publications frame their coverage differently and if the framing changes after the emergence of COVID-19. To do so, this study uses a sample consisting of articles from summer months (May-August) spanning three years (2019, 2020, and 2021), as COVID-19 was first discovered in the United States in 2020. This study uses content analysis methodology to analyze a total of 206 articles. This kind of research is important, as environmental and social issues stemming …
Red Spruce Ecological Sites, Ecological States, And Restoration Pathways Quantified Through Soil Organic Carbon, James Edward Leonard
Red Spruce Ecological Sites, Ecological States, And Restoration Pathways Quantified Through Soil Organic Carbon, James Edward Leonard
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Tools used by agencies and organizations like the Forest Service (FS), the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), the Nature Conservancy (TNC), and the Central Appalachian Spruce Restoration Initiative (CASRI) to help guide red spruce (Picea rubens) ecosystem restoration within Central Appalachia could better address outcomes from management practices implemented in terms of soil organic carbon (SOC) stock changes. These high-elevation landscapes have a natural capacity to produce diverse ecosystem services that affect humans, animals, and plants alike. Ecological site descriptions (ESD) are an important tool used to restore impacted landscapes and provide detailed management prescriptions specific to red spruce ecological …
Enhancing Natural Capital To Improve Mental Health And Well-Being In Rural Communities In Minnesota, Ashley Zidon
Enhancing Natural Capital To Improve Mental Health And Well-Being In Rural Communities In Minnesota, Ashley Zidon
Sociology and Anthropology
This paper explores how green space can aid in improved mental health outcomes for individuals who live in rural communities in greater Minnesota. The mental health landscape across the state is complex and layered, complicated by access, insurance, broadband, and employment. At the local level, built and natural policy have the ability to directly impact physical and mental health outcomes for people; positively or negatively. Unfortunately, little literature exists in rural context; shadowed by its urban counterpart. By exploring how broader partnerships and policy can be strengthened, local and county government play a critical role in how communities can support …
Does Social Capital Always Affect Immigrant Employment? Analyzing The Mediating Effect Of United States’ Cultural Context On The Relationship Between Social Capital And Immigrant Employment, Debarati Kole
Sociology and Anthropology
The paper investigates if culture mediates the relation between immigrants’ social capital and the likelihood of employment in a host country. It applies Social Capital Theory to predict potential effects of culture and then, conducts statistical tests on data for two distinct periods in United States history. Results are consistent with prior findings that social capital enhances the likelihood of employment for immigrants. In general, culture did not affect the efficacy of social capital on increasing the likelihood of immigrant employment, though there was an effect of culture on the quantity of bridging capital and immigrants’ trust in members of …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of varying feed ingredients and heating systems on boiler performance metrics. Chapter Two investigated the effects of two corn-expressed phytases, differing in enzyme concentration within the grain (3,000 or 9,677 FTU/g), on broiler performance and tibia mineralization, when used as a component in pelleted feed. Dietary treatments included a positive control (PC), with industry-recommended levels of calcium and phosphorous, and a negative control (NC), lower in calcium and non-phytate phosphorous. Six diets containing corn-expressed phytase at high or low grain concentrations, formulated to 3,000, 6,000, or 9,000 FTU/kg, were …
Performance Of Sensor Fusion For Vehicular Applications, Nikola Janevski
Performance Of Sensor Fusion For Vehicular Applications, Nikola Janevski
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Sensor fusion is a key system in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, ADAS. The perfor-
mance of the sensor fusion depends on many factors such as the sensors used, the kinematic
model used in the Extended Kalman Filter, EKF, the motion of the vehicles, the type of
road, the density of vehicles, and the gating methods. The interactions between parameters
and the extent to which individual parameters contribute to the overall accuracy of a sensor
fusion system can be difficult to assess.
In this study, a full-factorial experimental evaluation of a sensor fusion system based
on a real vehicle was performed. …
Population Characteristics Of Three Black Bass Species In The Upper Ohio River Drainage, Levi Foster Brown
Population Characteristics Of Three Black Bass Species In The Upper Ohio River Drainage, Levi Foster Brown
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In West Virginia, species of black bass are economically and ecologically important and support popular fisheries. In the state’s large, navigable river systems, recent information suggests that anglers consider these fisheries diminished relative to their historic stocks. This study sought to describe the population characteristics of Largemouth, Smallmouth, and Spotted Bass in the upper Ohio River drainage and evaluate possible management actions. Low relative abundances coupled with poor growth estimates for Largemouth and Spotted Bass suggests that a suite of environmental and anthropogenic factors may be reducing the quality of their recreational fisheries. Conversely, demographic estimates produced for Smallmouth Bass …
Machine Learning Based Real-Time Quantification Of Production From Individual Clusters In Shale Wells, Ayodeji Luke Aboaba
Machine Learning Based Real-Time Quantification Of Production From Individual Clusters In Shale Wells, Ayodeji Luke Aboaba
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Over the last two decades, there has been advances in downhole monitoring in oil and gas wells with the use of Fiber-Optic sensing technology such as the Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS). Unlike a conventional production log that provides only snapshots of the well performance, DTS provides continuous temperature measurements along the entire wellbore.
Whether by fluid extraction or injection, oil and gas production changes reservoir conditions, and continuous monitoring of downhole conditions is highly desirable. This research study presents a tool for real-time quantification of production from individual perforation clusters in a multi-stage shale well using Artificial Intelligence and Machine …
Learning Representations For Human Identification, Sinan Sabri
Learning Representations For Human Identification, Sinan Sabri
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Long-duration visual tracking of people requires the ability to link track snippets (a.k.a. tracklets) based on the identity of people. In lack of the availability of motion priors or hard biometrics (e.g., face, fingerprint, or iris), the common practice is to leverage soft biometrics for matching tracklets corresponding to the same person in different sightings. A common choice is to use the whole-body visual appearance of the person, as determined by the clothing, which is assumed to not change during tracking. The problem is challenging because distinct images of the same person may look very different, since no restrictions are …
Generation Of High Performing Morph Datasets, Kelsey Lynn O'Haire
Generation Of High Performing Morph Datasets, Kelsey Lynn O'Haire
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Facial recognition systems play a vital role in our everyday lives. We rely on this technology from menial tasks to issues as vital as national security. While strides have been made over the past ten years to improve facial recognition systems, morphed face images are a viable threat to the reliability of these systems. Morphed images are generated by combining the face images of two subjects. The resulting morphed face shares the likeness of the contributing subjects, confusing both humans and face verification algorithms. This vulnerability has grave consequences for facial recognition systems used on international borders or for law …
Appalachian Broadcast News Coverage Of The Coronavirus: A Content Analysis Of Media Framing In The Midst Of A Health Crisis, Jensen M. Mills
Appalachian Broadcast News Coverage Of The Coronavirus: A Content Analysis Of Media Framing In The Midst Of A Health Crisis, Jensen M. Mills
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Media framing of broadcast news is more than identifying an issue, but rather interpreting and explaining the issue for others to better understand. Previous framing scholarship in broadcast news, as well as COVID-19 specifically, has focused mostly on national or international news, so this research explores broadcast coverage from a local perspective in a rural location. During the health crisis of COVID-19, the specific use of media frames can impact how people made sense of the pandemic. Through a content analysis of 165 newscast scripts from five different local news stations in Appalachia, this study contributes to the understanding of …
The Bigger Picture: Wrongful Conviction Documentary Thematic Vs Episodic Framing, Alecsandra N. Vac
The Bigger Picture: Wrongful Conviction Documentary Thematic Vs Episodic Framing, Alecsandra N. Vac
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
True crime documentaries have gained popularity in the past decade, but those focusing on wrongful conviction cases have been on the rise (Doughty, 2018). Advocates against wrongful conviction, such as the Innocence Project, have been utilizing entertainment media to increase awareness on the issues present in the criminal justice system. However, the framing of wrongful conviction causes and cases (ex: focusing on extreme accusations of police misconduct and intentional forensic evidence tampering) could lead to a bias in how the viewers understand how miscarriages of justice occur. The primary research question being investigated here is, how are these advocacy-recommended documentaries …
Extension Of A Bayesian Method For Viral Genome Re-Sequencing To Multi-Dimensional Parameters, Sarah Fleischer
Extension Of A Bayesian Method For Viral Genome Re-Sequencing To Multi-Dimensional Parameters, Sarah Fleischer
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) refers to all sequencing methods post Sanger Sequencing. Sequencing By Synthesis is the most well-known method, however it’s inaccessible price is difficult for some. Thus, a different method also exists, re-sequencing– which relies on a reference genome to check the validity of each base call. The standard for determining the validity of a base call is a one parameter quality score. But, previously a two-parameter Bayesian method was successfully used for re-sequencing the viral genome. However, a quality parameter was previously not used in the construction of the cumulative density function for the likelihood. This paper …
Novel Modes Of Synchronization And Extreme Events In Coupled Chemical Oscillators, David Allen Mersing
Novel Modes Of Synchronization And Extreme Events In Coupled Chemical Oscillators, David Allen Mersing
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
We experimentally and computationally investigate dynamical behaviors in coupled chemical oscillators. These networks of chemical oscillators are created using catalytic Ru(bpy)32+ loaded cation exchange beads submerged in catalyst-free Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) solutions. Various network structures are created by utilizing the photosensitive nature of the Ru(bpy) 32+ catalyst. The response of the oscillators due to light stimuli can be characterized by constructing a phase response curve (PRC). The PRC quantifies the excitatory and inhibitory responses of BZ oscillators due to applied light perturbations as a function of the oscillators' phase. Different initial concentrations of reactants in the BZ reaction …
Low- And High-Wattage Vaping During Pregnancy Influence Aortic Structure And Function In Rat Offspring, James Ian Frazier
Low- And High-Wattage Vaping During Pregnancy Influence Aortic Structure And Function In Rat Offspring, James Ian Frazier
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Introduction: Electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) are being marketed as a healthier alternative to traditional cigarettes, yet the health consequences of e-cig usage (also called vaping) are still being investigated. E-cigs are easily customized for user preferences. For example, the choice of flavors, nicotine concentration, and/or the temperature (i.e., wattage) used to heat the e-liquid can be selected in many devices. Emerging evidence suggests that vaping during pregnancy impairs cerebral vascular function in rodent offspring. In this study, we sought to investigate the potential effects of changes to e-cig device wattage (i.e., 5W vs. 30W) with maternal vaping during pregnancy on vascular …
Combinatorial Approaches For Effective Design, Synthesis, And Optimization Of Enzyme-Based Conjugates, Jordan Scott Chapman
Combinatorial Approaches For Effective Design, Synthesis, And Optimization Of Enzyme-Based Conjugates, Jordan Scott Chapman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The specificity and efficiency with which enzymes catalyze selective chemical reactions far exceeds the performance of traditional heterogeneous catalysts that are predominant in industrial applications such as conversion of commodity chemicals to value-added products, fuel cells, and petroleum refinement. Moreover, biocatalysts exhibit exceptionally high product turnover at ambient conditions with little health and environmental burden. These advantageous qualities have led to the prolific use of enzyme catalysis in pharmaceutical, detergents, and food preservation industries wherein their use has greatly reduced waste generation, Unfortunately, the full slate of benefits that enzymes can impart to a broader range of chemical processes is …
Short-Term International Sport For Development And Peace Programs: A Retrospective Analysis And Critique Informed By Stakeholders’ Perspectives In A Two-Year Follow-Up, Adam Hansell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Sport for Development and Peace (SDP) programs are a popular approach to promoting positive development throughout the world, spanning health, education, peace, and social issues. However, scholars have identified critical shortcomings of SDP work, including the potential to reinforce neoliberalist tendencies and values imposition from the Global North to the Global South. Deporte y Cambio Social was a short-term SDP program established through partnership between American and Mexican constituent groups with aims to empower girls and women through soccer. Through six semi-structured, two-year retrospective interviews, the purpose of the present study was to explore cross-cultural understandings of power and intercultural …
A Domain Adaptation Approach For Segmenting Cell Instances In Microscopy Data, Matthew R. Keaton
A Domain Adaptation Approach For Segmenting Cell Instances In Microscopy Data, Matthew R. Keaton
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Automated cellular instance segmentation is a process that has been utilized for accelerating biological research since before the deep learning era, and recent advancements have produced higher quality results with less effort from the biologist. Most current endeavors focus on completely cutting the researcher out of the picture by generating highly generalized models. However, these models invariably fail when faced with novel data and effectively opt to miss out on the full capabilities of deep learning in pursuit of this goal. In our work, we demonstrate how, with even a minimal amount of annotated data, dominant approaches in this space …
A Practice Improvement Project Incorporating Tobacco Cessation Education Into A Doctor Of Nursing Practice Program, Jillian Doan
A Practice Improvement Project Incorporating Tobacco Cessation Education Into A Doctor Of Nursing Practice Program, Jillian Doan
Nursing
Tobacco use is a global epidemic and is one of the largest public health threats the world has faced killing over eight million people annually. Smoking-related illnesses cost the United States $300 billion annually. Unfortunately, only 31% of those attempting to quit smoking in 2015 used evidenced-base cessation treatments. When behavioral and pharmacotherapy are combined, cessation rates increase by 82%. With tobacco use being the leading cause of U.S. preventable death and with 70% of tobacco users visiting a primary care facility annually, it is essential that providers appropriately and accurately address tobacco use and cessation. This practice improvement project …

Promoting Confidence In Pressure Injury Management In Rural Long-Term Care, Leah Radke
Promoting Confidence In Pressure Injury Management In Rural Long-Term Care, Leah Radke
Nursing
Despite prevention efforts, pressure injuries (PIs) remain prevalent across care settings and impose significant burden on affected individuals and the entire healthcare system. Many individuals, including those who live rurally and in long-term care (LTC) facilities, face challenges when accessing specialty care, leaving PI management to primary care providers (PCPs) and nursing staff. Minimal training and the myriad of commercially available wound care products contribute to lack of confidence in PI management. This quality improvement project aimed to promote confidence in management of PIs in LTC residents, through development of a product selection guide, example orders, and separate education for …
Implementing Adult Waist Circumference Measurements In Primary Care, Terryl Lynn Johnson
Implementing Adult Waist Circumference Measurements In Primary Care, Terryl Lynn Johnson
Nursing
Overweight and obesity negatively affect multiple acute and chronic disease conditions (USDHHS & ODPHP, n.d.). Two of the most valid and reliable measurements of overweight and obesity are body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) (NHLBI, n.d.). Despite evidence that waist circumference measurement (WCM) can aid in stratifying risk, the predominant measurement of obesity is BMI alone (Ross et al., 2020). The purpose of the practice improvement project involved creating a workflow to measure adult WC at wellness visits, increase the frequency of adult WCM, and documentation of WCM in the electronic health record (EHR). The project included increasing …
Influenza Vaccination Rates In Primary Care, Kara Kreft
Influenza Vaccination Rates In Primary Care, Kara Kreft
Nursing
Influenza is a common and highly contagious upper respiratory illness that affects an average of 8% of Americans each season. The flu was associated with 18 million medical visits, 400,000 hospitalizations, and 22,000 deaths during the 2019-2020 flu season in the United States (US). The best protection from the flu is to receive an annual vaccination. However, only 56.5% of North Dakotans received a flu vaccine for the 2019-2020 season, well below the Healthy People 2030 goal of 70%. Suboptimal vaccination rates, along with increasing vaccine hesitancy and misinformation associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, make efforts in improving vaccine uptake …

Prediabetes: Provider Awareness And The Implementation Of The Prevent Diabetes Stat Toolkit Resources, Brooke Feltman
Nursing
Increased proactivity and improved management of prediabetes is a growing need amongst providers in the primary care setting. Nearly one third of North Dakota residents over the age of 20 have prediabetes, but only one out of ten are aware of this reversible medical condition. Without early correction and identification, 15-30% of people with prediabetes will develop type 2 diabetes. Based on the need for increased proactivity towards prediabetic management, evidence-based resources were created by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Medical Association. The Prevent Diabetes STAT Toolkit was developed to guide medical professionals in assisting …
Providing Postpartum Depression Resources At A Local Wic Agency, Katie Marie Casey
Providing Postpartum Depression Resources At A Local Wic Agency, Katie Marie Casey
Nursing
Postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant mental illness that impacts 12.5% of all postpartum women. In women with low-income, the prevalence increases to 25% and 40-60% of low-income, adolescent mothers report depressive symptoms. Postpartum depression also presents a significant early risk to healthy child development and the bond between mother and child. Symptoms of PPD can present as soon as 2 weeks postpartum and as late as 3 years postpartum. Unfortunately, once delivered, women are typically not assessed by a medical provider until 6 weeks postpartum. Therefore, targeting additional opportunities for PPD education in low-income women may play a role …
Aspirin And Statin Use For Primary Prevention Of Cardiovascular Disease, Natalie Jean Carriveau
Aspirin And Statin Use For Primary Prevention Of Cardiovascular Disease, Natalie Jean Carriveau
Nursing
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States and aspirin and statins are well-known medications associated with CVD prevention. There are well-known benefits of aspirin for secondary prevention of CVD, but aspirin’s role in primary prevention remains controversial. The decision to start aspirin for primary prevention is individualized to the specific patient and situation. Statins are a drug used as first-line therapy in cholesterol management, though there is a complicated relationship with adherence due to real and/or perceived safety issues associated with statin use. The decision to start statins needs to be determined …

Human Papillomavirus Vaccine Knowledge, Beliefs, Attitudes, And Barriers: An Educational Intervention For Male College Students To Increase Knowledge, Vaccine Intent, And Vaccine Uptake, Shannon Marie Thompson
Nursing
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States. When the virus does not spontaneously resolve, HPV infections can develop into papillomas or cancers (CDC, 2020d). While interventions promoting the HPV vaccine as a means to prevent cervical cancer have been successful, HPV-related cancer in men has been commonly overlooked. Current data shows low rates of HPV immunization for young adult males in North Dakota (NDIIS, 2020). To address this low uptake, an intervention was designed to address the following clinical question: In college males ages 18 to 26, will the provision of education regarding …
