Development Of Flood Prediction Models Using Machine Learning Techniques, Bhanu Kanwar
Development Of Flood Prediction Models Using Machine Learning Techniques, Bhanu Kanwar
Doctoral Dissertations
"Flooding and flash flooding events damage infrastructure elements and pose a significant threat to the safety of the people residing in susceptible regions. There are some methods that government authorities rely on to assist in predicting these events in advance to provide warning, but such methodologies have not kept pace with modern machine learning. To leverage these algorithms, new models must be developed to efficiently capture the relationships among the variables that influence these events in a given region. These models can be used by emergency management personnel to develop more robust flood management plans for susceptible areas. The research …
Safety And Security On Campus: Student Perceptions And Influence On Enrollment, Kaitlyn Puckett
Safety And Security On Campus: Student Perceptions And Influence On Enrollment, Kaitlyn Puckett
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Research examining college choice has traditionally focused on factors relating to demographics of the student and the college/university. Less attention has been directed towards how safety and security of the campus and the surrounding community play a role in college choice. In addition, some studies have examined students’ fear of crime, perception of safety and security, and perception of public safety; however, there is still much to be learned. The current study sought to further the research by (1) assessing how campus safety and security impacts enrollment decisions, (2) assessing how students perceive fear of crime and their personal safety, …
Putting Labor’S Capital To Work For Labor: Restoring A Worker-Centric Vision Of Fiduciary Duty, David H. Webber
Putting Labor’S Capital To Work For Labor: Restoring A Worker-Centric Vision Of Fiduciary Duty, David H. Webber
Faculty Scholarship
This report has two goals: first, to illustrate how the legal concept of fiduciary duty, designed to protect worker retirement funds, has been captured and distorted in ways that harm workers. Second, to propose means of restoring fiduciary duty to its proper purpose. The state-level fiduciary duties addressed in this report govern the investment of up to $10 trillion in assets and directly shape the retirements of 26 million working-class Americans. They are also just about the only source of worker voice in capital markets and corporate boardrooms. That is why a range of powerful business lobbies have distorted the …

Addressing Human Trafficking As A Public Health Issue, Frances Recknor, Erica Di Ruggiero, Elsabeth Jensen
Addressing Human Trafficking As A Public Health Issue, Frances Recknor, Erica Di Ruggiero, Elsabeth Jensen
Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy Staff Publications
Human trafficking is increasingly recognized as a significant global public health issue. Human trafficking (HT) exists in all nations, including Canada, and is estimated to impact 25 million people globally. HT is a crime that is not always visible. It is associated with a myriad of deleterious health outcomes arising from adverse living and working conditions, and the physical, sexual, and/or psychological violence often accompanying it. Human trafficking also disproportionately affects people living under vulnerable circumstances, particularly those with intersecting vulnerabilities. Public health can advance health equity for trafficked persons and add value to existing anti-trafficking (AT) efforts. Among its …
The Effectiveness Of A Career And Technical Education Program Of Study On Preparing Students For Their Chosen Career, Rigoberto Vasquez
The Effectiveness Of A Career And Technical Education Program Of Study On Preparing Students For Their Chosen Career, Rigoberto Vasquez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Attending a 4-year university is not a goal for all high school students. Some students, as early as their first year in high school, have chosen another direction by enrolling in a career and technical education (CTE) program of study (POS). The purpose of the study was to conduct a qualitative case study documenting the outcomes of past graduates of a CTE POS located on a public comprehensive high school campus in California. The participation of former graduates to share their insight and experience from being high school age students to working adults provided the real-life ramifications of the effectiveness …
Othering In Immigration Laws, Andrea Wright, Quenten Jackson, Cesar Raymundo
Othering In Immigration Laws, Andrea Wright, Quenten Jackson, Cesar Raymundo
Immigration Scholarship: History, Trends and Development in Global Immigration
The ethical wrongs in immigration laws severely impact what it means to be an immigrant American citizen. The Hispanic and Latino groups experience “citizenship” in the United States in a way that portrays them as uneducated and poor criminals, and this paper seeks to understand the reasoning behind this unfair reputation. In order to answer questions of ethics and law, this paper begins with studying the root of othering, regarding immigration in the United States. This research paper investigates the evolution of race-based exclusion laws in immigration and focuses on the relationship between these exclusion laws and race hierarchy in …

A More Grown-Up Response To Ordinary Adolescent Behaviors: Repealing Pins Laws To Protect And Empower D.C. Youth, Mae C. Quinn, Tierra Copeland, Tatyana Hopkins, Mary Brody
University of the District of Columbia Law Review
In February 2020, the District of Columbia (“District” or “D.C.”) Juvenile Justice Advisory Group (“JJAG”), issued an important report calling for decriminalization of “status offenses.” Status offenses are alleged youthful wrongdoings that are prosecuted in the District as “Persons in Need of Supervision” cases.1 This Position Paper provides additional support for JJAG’s recommendations. It offers guidance and suggestions to help the District successfully transition away from PINS prosecutions—while also ensuring community youth feel safe, supported, and empowered in their own lives as they transition to adulthood. The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department has historically been the enforcement arm to address youth …
Neutralizing The Tentacles Of Organized Crime. Assessment Of An Anti-Crime Measure In Fighting Mafia Violence, Anna Laura Baraldi, Erasmo Papagni, Marco Stimolo
Neutralizing The Tentacles Of Organized Crime. Assessment Of An Anti-Crime Measure In Fighting Mafia Violence, Anna Laura Baraldi, Erasmo Papagni, Marco Stimolo
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
Organized crime reinforces its corrupting influence on politics through violent intimidation. Anti-crime measures that increase the cost of corruption but not of the exercise of violence might accordingly lead mafia-style organizations to retaliate by resorting to violence in lieu of bribery. On the other hand, anti-corruption measures might also induce criminal clans to go inactive, owing to the higher “entry barriers” to the “business” of influencing politics, which would reduce violence. To determine which of these possible effects is prevalent, we undertake an empirical assessment of the impact of city council dissolution for mafia influence as prescribed by Decree Law …
