The Paris Agreement’s goal to hold warming to 1.5°-2°C above pre-industrial levels now appears unrealistic. Profs. Robin Kundis Craig and J.B. Ruhl have recently argued that because a 4°C world may be likely, we must recognize the disruptive consequences of such a world and respond by reimagining governance structures to meet the challenges of adapting to it. In this latest in a biannual series of essays, they and other members of the Environmental Law Collaborative explore what 4°C might mean for a variety of current legal doctrines, planning policies, governance structures, and institutions.

Background: Implementation of a medical clinic is part of the strategic plan for Colegio Mark, a primary and secondary school in Cantel, Guatemala with a 41-year relationship with Colonial Presbyterian Church in Kansas City, Missouri. Due to resource constraints, prioritization of top health concerns and implementation of targeted solutions is key. The aim of this needs assessment is to determine how best to improve health outcomes in Cantel. Methods: Information was collected through 17 qualitative interviews, then analyzed through an affinity diagram with strengths, weakness, opportunities, and threats (SWOT analysis) as the categories. The findings were plotted on an impact …
Resilience Of Former Offenders Released From A Halfway House, Tasha Andrea Pritchett
Resilience Of Former Offenders Released From A Halfway House, Tasha Andrea Pritchett
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Former offenders confront a myriad of obstacles that often lead to re-offending and return to prison. Re-offending also creates financial and social burdens for taxpayers. There is some evidence that the consequences of incarceration for offenders can be buffered through resilience. Factors that promote resilience can be personal (internal) and environmental (external), and may directly or indirectly affect offenders’ adaptation, well-being, and development as they transition out of prison. The purpose of the study was to explore the narratives of resilience in adult males who have transitioned from halfway houses to mainstream society. Richardson’s metatheory of resilience and resiliency was …

Systematic Literature Review Of Residency Program For Transition To Intensive Care, Sonja Marguerite Thornton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The purpose of the systematic literature review project is to present the benefits of a nurse residency program (NRP) to assist new graduate nurses (NGNs) in transition to intensive care nursing. A theory-to-practice gap in knowledge and experience results in the need to support these nurses during their transition to professional practice. This project focused on compiling a systematic review of existing literature to provide evidence and insights into the optimal structure and process of transitioning new graduate nurses to intensive care nursing practice. The American Associations of Critical Care Nurses synergy conceptual model and Patricia Benner's novice to expert …
Strategies To Reduce Flight Attendant Voluntary Turnover, Jorge Tobar
Strategies To Reduce Flight Attendant Voluntary Turnover, Jorge Tobar
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Flight attendant voluntary turnover can lead to staffing shortages that can cause severe disruptions to flight schedules, damage the airlines’ reputations, and negatively affect revenues, which are significant challenges for airline leaders. Grounded in Herzberg’s two-factor theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple-case study was to explore strategies airline leaders use to reduce flight attendant voluntary turnover. Data were collected from four leaders from four U.S. airlines in the southwestern United States using semistructured interviews and reviews of organizational documents. Five themes emerged from thematic analysis: improving compensation and benefits packages, implementing rewards and recognition programs, increasing supervisory support, expanding …

The Use Of Social Media For Disaster Information In Houston-Galveston, Tx, Erik Phillip Zugner
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractDisasters, natural or human-caused, have the ability to inflict catastrophic economic and physical damage to communities around the world. As social media is becoming more widespread in the use of information sharing, it is not being used to its full potential to communicate with the communities in the greater Houston-Galveston, TX region. The purpose of this study was to address the use and implementation of social media for disasters and large-scale events in the Houston-Galveston, TX region. I used the transformative framework as outlined by Creswell as the theoretical framework for this study. The qualitative research questions focused on social …

Effective Strategies To Recruit Post-9/11 Veterans To Fill Transportation-Related, Jeremy Haynes
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Some transportation company leaders struggle to attract and retain employees in an increasingly active and turbulent labor market. Failure to resupply human capital can disrupt and jeopardize supply chain capabilities across the United States. Grounded in the person-organization fit theory, the purpose of this multiple case study was to explore strategies HR managers use to recruit qualified military veterans to fill transportation vacancies. The participants included three HR managers from three transportation companies in the southeastern and midwestern regions of the United States that successfully implemented a military veteran recruiting strategy. Data were collected from semistructured interviews, journal notes taken …

Perception Of Racial Minorities And Police Officers Involving Use Of Force, Linda L. Hester
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Although police training, codes of ethics, and use of force policies are in place at police departments, the problem is there is a lack of standardization involving use of force by police officers, which is triggering community concerns between police officers and racial minorities. The present study built on the work of Riter by exploring perceptions and lived experiences of racial minorities involving police officers’ use of force based on fear, trust, and confidence. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore whether lived experiences of racial minority citizens differ from police officers regarding use of force in a …

Russian Federalism In 2012-2021, Vladimir Kalajdzhyan
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Researchers have disagreed on whether the Russian federal system of government was one of the many models of federalism, its own unique form of it, or not federalism. Therefore, the overarching research question investigated was how classic western theoretical frameworks on federalism applied to the contemporary Russian federal system, how the Russian system evolved in its own unique way, and how it related to asymmetrical federalist, quasi-federalist, and non-federalist systems. The classic theoretical foundation framework on federalism was applied. The purpose of this research was to study current trends within the Russian federal government system and investigate paths for Russia’s …
Exploring Systemic Reform In Criminal Justice For Afro-Americans Based On Critical Policy Ethnography, Cozetta Butts Lamore
Exploring Systemic Reform In Criminal Justice For Afro-Americans Based On Critical Policy Ethnography, Cozetta Butts Lamore
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The persistent disproportionate rates of Afro-American involvement within the criminal justice system at all levels have resulted in historic levels of unexplained mass incarceration. Despite federal guidance, the pandemic of unexplained mass incarceration persists. Some studies have noted that the lack of academic attention may be one of the primary reasons for the lack of change. Others have noted the need for centering and lifting the perspective of those who have been most impacted by these racial disparities. The intent of this study was to offer a qualitative close-up examination and analysis from the perspective of impacted populations. The ecological …
Veteran Defendant Reasons For Opting Out Of Veterans' Treatment Court, Delilah A. Moore
Veteran Defendant Reasons For Opting Out Of Veterans' Treatment Court, Delilah A. Moore
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Veterans’ treatment courts (VTCs) are problem-solving courts created to address the specific treatment needs of veteran defendants. Consistent with general strain theory, the stressors of military service can lead to negative emotions that have been linked to criminality. Despite the favorable results of studies on the efficacy of VTCs to reduce recidivism, participation is voluntary, and not all eligible candidates elect to participate. The purpose of this study was to discover why defendants choose to opt out. Understanding the barriers to participation is critical for VTC actors charged with providing treatment to as many veterans as possible. A qualitative study …

Successful Ethical Reporting Strategies In The Technology Industry, Frances Aida Billingsley
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractTechnology employees can feel restricted if there is an inability to report unethical behaviors safely, resulting in disengagement and reduced work performance. Technology managers need effective, ethical reporting strategies to improve work performance. Grounded in stakeholder theory, the purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the ethical reporting strategies that three technology managers used to improve work performance in New Jersey. The data sources were semistructured interviews and company documents from the companies’ websites, annual reports, professional association biographies, and the LinkedIn profiles of participants. The three primary themes that emerged using thematic analysis were documenting incidents immediately, …

Guided by the theory of regime values, a nonintrusive approach was employed to …
Impact Of Trauma On Job Satisfaction And Turnover Intention Among Emergency Dispatchers, Sherrie Johnston
Impact Of Trauma On Job Satisfaction And Turnover Intention Among Emergency Dispatchers, Sherrie Johnston
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Emergency dispatchers in the United States are exposed to traumatic events, which may lead to a staffing shortage. Though it is well-established that decreased job satisfaction increases turnover intentions, little research investigates whether trauma impacts these constructs. Therefore, this quantitative non-experimental study was focused on whether education was a protective factor against posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and whether trauma moderated the relationship between job satisfaction and turnover intention among emergency dispatchers. The relationship between vicarious trauma (VT) and PTSD among dispatchers was examined, and whether it is possible to predict PTSD among dispatchers based on VT, education level, and job …
Why Congress Has Not Passed Facial Recognition Technology Legislation For Public Spaces, Kecia Treviri Robertson
Why Congress Has Not Passed Facial Recognition Technology Legislation For Public Spaces, Kecia Treviri Robertson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractFacial recognition technology (FRT) in public spaces has been a political and social concern for more than 30 years. Conflict exists between the use of FRT for safety and security measures and its possible violation of the First, Fourth, and Fourteenth Amendments. Additional controversial issues surrounding the use of FRT in public spaces include technological development without standardization or regulations; biometric algorithms developed with bias; and the social issues of privacy intrusion, gender and racial bias, data security, accuracy, and privacy concerns. Researchers have concurred a national policy is needed to address FRT issues but have not explained why Congress …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
With management influence evolving in organizations, changes occur slower than anticipated. The problem in my study addressed how management controls promotional policies for probation officers. The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate whether management has control over probation promotional policies. Maslov’s theory of self-realization was incorporated into the theoretical framework for my research. Audio interviews were conducted with 15 participants who were non managerial probation officers who had no subordinates. Data analysis included key elements impacting morale in the workplace, employee evaluations, training, and communications. The conclusion showed there was a need to improve several promotional policies based …

Peng Shuai, China’s star tennis player, logged onto the Chinese social media platform Weibo in November 2021 and posted a description of her relationship with Zhang Gaoli, a powerful Chinese leader and former Vice Premier of China. Shuai alleged in her post that after a consensual relationship with Gaoli, he sexually assaulted her. She described her feelings from the trauma and the suicidal thoughts that followed. Within minutes, the Chinese government scrubbed the post from the internet — but it was still quick to spread, battling the “Great Firewall.” Shuai’s profile essentially disappeared online; along with Shuai in the real …

How Federalism Built The Fbi, Sustained Local Police, And Left Out The States, Daniel Richman, Sarah A. Seo
How Federalism Built The Fbi, Sustained Local Police, And Left Out The States, Daniel Richman, Sarah A. Seo
Faculty Articles
This Article examines the endurance of police localism amid the improbable growth of the FBI in the early twentieth century when the prospect of a centralized law enforcement agency was anathema to the ideals of American democracy. It argues that doctrinal accounts of federalism do not explain these paradoxical developments. By analyzing how the Bureau made itself indispensable to local police departments rather than encroaching on their turf, the Article elucidates an operational, or collaborative, federalism that not only enlarged the Bureau’s capacity and authority but also strengthened local autonomy at the expense of the states. Collaborative federalism is crucial …

The increasing prevalence of sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) affects approximately 25% of adults in the United States and an estimated 34% of men and 17% of women in the primary care population. In the clinical project site, the practice problem involved the increasing clinicians’ knowledge about OSA and being able to implement screening tools for further treatment and evaluation. The purpose of this project was to develop an educational training and intervention for staff to increase their knowledge of OSA conditions and have it validated by a panel of experts before dispersing it to the intended …
