Analyzing The Global Happiness Index, Victoria Hernandez, Christy W. Wachira

SMU Data Science Review

This study explores the Global Happiness Index using data compiled from the OECD and Our World in Data to identify key factors contributing to societal well-being. Six primary predictors were analyzed: GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity, and perceptions of corruption. Regression and clustering techniques were employed to uncover patterns among countries. By expanding the analytical scope beyond conventional economic and social indicators, this study helps identify new pathways for improving well-being across diverse cultural and economic landscapes. Additional variables such as perceived safety, political engagement, and values related to family and …

Prison Rape: An Endless Epidemic?, Kathleen M. Darcy, Hannah Brenner Johnson Nov 2025

Prison Rape: An Endless Epidemic?, Kathleen M. Darcy, Hannah Brenner Johnson

University of Memphis Law Review

Congress passed the landmark Prison Rape Elimination Act (“PREA”) in 2003 with unanimous support from both the Senate and House of Representatives. After the rampant sexual violence occurring behind the closed doors of prisons and jails (much of which was perpetrated by the staff of these institutions) was brought to light by human rights organizations, news media, lawyers, and activists in the late 1990s, lawmakers crafted this unprecedented federal law to establish a zero-tolerance policy for what it described as an “invisible epidemic.” At the law’s twenty-year mark, justice-involved individuals are still being sexually victimized in carceral settings, day after …

Empathy On Trial: The Role Of Neuroscience And Communication In Sexual Violence Jurisprudence, Samantha M. Gonzales Nov 2025

Empathy On Trial: The Role Of Neuroscience And Communication In Sexual Violence Jurisprudence, Samantha M. Gonzales

Honors Program Theses and Research Projects

Sexual violence remains a contentious public safety and legal challenge, which has become further complicated by the tension between supporting victim-survivors and safeguarding the falsely accused. False accusations, though still well below the numbers of rightly accused, are experiencing a rise in popularity given recent (past ten years) political climates. This thesis examines how communication theory, neuroscience, and law intersect in molding perceptions of truth, culpability, and justice in sexual violence cases; while also examining the intersectionality of those fields in addressing the candor of allegations, the rate of recidivism, and quality of public health and safety. The most prominent …

Data Driven Policies: An Ideal For Louisiana's Juvenile Justice System, Stephen Phillippi, Sara Juneau, Kelsey Witmeier, Victoria Sacco

Journal of the Louisiana Public Health Association

Background: Data collection and monitoring efforts among juvenile justice agencies have grown exponentially in the United States over the last 50 years. Despite widespread recognition that reliable data is essential to developing strategic evidence-based policies, there are still considerable gaps among the states and locally. In Louisiana, legislators and decision-makers have worked towards advancing juvenile justice policy reforms in recent decades, though the resulting outcomes remain unclear. The goals of the current study were to identify existing data reporting strengths and gaps within the Louisiana juvenile justice system (JJS) and examine how such reports might be better used in data-driven …

International Journal of Speleology

Fires occurring in cave guano are a rare and unusual phenomenon and the occurrence of such events in Southeast Asia is particularly novel. In this study, we document the first recorded instance of a bat guano fire in a tropical cave at Tham Chao Ram in Sukhothai province, northern Thailand. A bacteriological analysis was made of the guano at the fire site and from a control site within the cave. We give a comprehensive review of global reports on bat guano fires in caves, conduct an initial investigation of the physical factors at the fire site and discuss the potential …

From Mapping To Mitigation: New Geologic Mapping And Emergency Slope Failure Response Along Sr 56 In Madison, Indiana, Victoria Leffel, Joey Franzino

Civil Engineering Professional Development Seminar

This presentation will highlight recent geologic mapping efforts done by the Indiana Geological and Water Survey, including detailed bedrock mapping at a finer scale than previously available and updated landslide inventory mapping focused on southeastern Indiana. The second part of the presentation will cover the emergency response to a significant slope failure that occurred along SR 56 in Madison following heavy rainfall in March and April 2025. The reactivation of a known landslide led to a major road failure, creating a public safety hazard and forcing the closure of this heavily traveled route. Due to the critical nature of the …

The Underrepresentation Of African American Officers In A Large Midwestern Correctional System, Julius Oben Eyong Nov 2025

The Underrepresentation Of African American Officers In A Large Midwestern Correctional System, Julius Oben Eyong

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The correctional population in the United States remains high despite the implementation of various measures to reduce crime and recidivism. The primary goal of correctional establishments is to reduce recidivism and crime through effective rehabilitation programs. The role of the correctional officer is crucial in the rehabilitation process because they are the heartbeat of a prison. However, low staffing levels have a negative impact on the role of corrections officers. There is a gap in the relevant literature on the low staffing levels of African American correctional officers. This qualitative research, through the phenomenological approach, focused on the correctional culture …

Providencia Rettgeri As An Unusual Pathogen In Diabetic Foot Osteomyelitis: A Case Report And Literature Review, Stephanie N. Campbell, Madeleine Mehaffey, Nikita Gambhir, Amanda L. Killeen Nov 2025

Providencia Rettgeri As An Unusual Pathogen In Diabetic Foot Osteomyelitis: A Case Report And Literature Review, Stephanie N. Campbell, Madeleine Mehaffey, Nikita Gambhir, Amanda L. Killeen

School of Podiatric Medicine Publications

Providencia rettgeri is a Gram-negative bacterium, rarely reported as a cause of diabetic wound infections. Its frequent resistance to β-lactams and carbapenems limits treatment options, especially in immunocompromised patients. We present the case of a 59-year-old unhoused male living with diabetes, peripheral artery disease, and prior bilateral transmetatarsal amputations who presented with a University of Texas 3B diabetic foot ulcer. Magnetic resonance imaging showed osteomyelitis of metatarsals 2–4, and bone biopsy grew Providencia rettgeri and Proteus mirabilis. The patient declined further surgery and was treated with 6 weeks of cefepime and metronidazole, with outpatient wound care, achieving wound closure …

The Fearless Decision And The Future Of Race-Conscious Charities, Chenglin Liu Nov 2025

The Fearless Decision And The Future Of Race-Conscious Charities, Chenglin Liu

Cleveland State Law Review

Historically, courts tended to differentiate between invidious discrimination against racial minorities and benign discrimination against whites in the context of affirmative action movements. With the social movements galvanized by the conservatives and the change of composition of the Supreme Courts and lower courts, the feasibility of race-conscious measures aimed at helping minorities is substantially reduced. The conservatives’ win in Fearless, coupled with the Trump Administration’s attacks on DEI, have produced a self-censoring effect on charitable organizations. Because of these threats, race-conscious charities will have to modify their practices to become more “inclusive” or face legal challenges from conservatives.

The Nuclear Option: Preempting Power Generation, Keith Wadley Nov 2025

The Nuclear Option: Preempting Power Generation, Keith Wadley

Et Cetera

Nuclear power is a topic which many feel strongly about. Unfortunately, much of the information present in public discourse is a product of fear, misinformation, and a general lack of understanding regarding what nuclear power is and does. This note seeks to clear up the murky waters of the topic by presenting some basic factual information contrary to common misconceptions while also seeking to argue, in light of this information, that Congress should, and currently has the power to, prevent states from prohibiting the use of nuclear power. Congress passed the Energy Reorganization Act of 1974 which preempts the field …

Extending Handover Criteria For Inter-Technology Handover In 5g, Joachim W. Walewski, Carlos Guimarães

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure addresses the handover of Radio Resource Control connections in 5G Systems, specifically the offloading of traffic by handing over a connection from one radio technology to another. The proposed solution involves triggering the handover based on other criteria than signal strength. Example criteria are service time, latency, and location of the respective User Equipment. By allowing inter-technology handovers, better resource management can be achieved, enhancing connectivity and service continuity.

Beyond The Headlines: Exploring The Mental Health Impacts Of Police Brutality On Social Media In Black Americans, Kai'annica Walters Nov 2025

Beyond The Headlines: Exploring The Mental Health Impacts Of Police Brutality On Social Media In Black Americans, Kai'annica Walters

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Studies show Black Americans face high police brutality, leading to mental health issues like PTSD, depression, and anxiety. The purpose of this qualitative interpretive phenomenological study is to explore the lived experiences of Black Americans who have been exposed to police brutality on social media and how it impacts their racial identity and emotional well-being. This study employed critical race theory as both a theoretical lens and a conceptual framework to examine how race and systemic inequalities shape legal systems and societal narratives. I used IPA to explore how people interpret their experiences and the meanings they assign. This study …

Climatology Of Northeast Winds In Northern And Central California: A New Characterization Of The Diablo Wind, Alana R. Macken Nov 2025

Climatology Of Northeast Winds In Northern And Central California: A New Characterization Of The Diablo Wind, Alana R. Macken

Master's Theses

Diablo winds in northern California are known for driving some of the most destructive wildfires in state history. The Camp Fire of 2018, which caused at least 85 civilian fatalities, is just one example of the devastating outcomes associated with these rapidly developing downslope windstorms. While they are known to occur most frequently from fall through spring, much about the structure, evolution, and full spatial extent of these events remains poorly understood. Most previous studies have focused on a limited number of high-impact cases or have defined events using humidity-based thresholds in isolated regions such as the North Bay. As …
