Graduate Student Handbook 2022, Sacred Heart University
Graduate Student Handbook 2022, Sacred Heart University
Handbooks & Factbooks
Purpose & Acknowledgements: The Graduate Student Life Handbook was compiled by Mr. Jagdeep Singh Khasriya, a graduate student at Sacred Heart University.
When I was accepted at SHU for graduate studies, I was excited, confused, and curious at the same time as to where I will live, eat, shop, socialize, etc. Therefore, this book was compiled from a new graduate student’s perspective on what elements will interest the current students and help the prospective students. This is a general-purpose handbook that I hope will help students in showing everything that SHU has to offer by serving as a navigational guide. …

Cognitive Decline And The Workplace, Sharona Hoffman
Cognitive Decline And The Workplace, Sharona Hoffman
Faculty Publications
Cognitive decline will increasingly become a workplace concern because of three intersecting trends. First, the American population is aging. In 2019, 16.5 percent of the population, or fifty-four million people, were age 65 and over, and the number is expected to increase to seventy-eight million by 2025. Dementia is not uncommon among older adults, and by the age of eighty-five, between twenty-five and fifty percent of individuals suffer from this condition. Second, individuals are postponing retirement and prolonging their working lives. For example, about a quarter of physicians are over sixty-five, as are fifteen percent of attorneys. The average age …
Professional Speech At Scale, Cassandra Burke Robertson, Sharona Hoffman
Professional Speech At Scale, Cassandra Burke Robertson, Sharona Hoffman
Faculty Publications
Regulatory actions affecting professional speech are facing new challenges from all sides. On one side, the Supreme Court has grown increasingly protective of professionals’ free speech rights, and it has subjected regulations affecting that speech to heightened levels of scrutiny that call into question traditional regulatory practices in both law and medicine. On the other side, technological developments, including the growth of massive digital platforms and the introduction of artificial intelligence programs, have created brand new problems of regulatory scale. Professional speech is now able to reach a wide audience faster than ever before, creating risks that misinformation will cause …

Displacement And Preemption Of Climate Nuisance Claims, Jonathan H. Adler
Displacement And Preemption Of Climate Nuisance Claims, Jonathan H. Adler
Faculty Publications
New York City and other municipalities have filed state-law-based nuisance suits against fossil fuel companies seeking compensatory damages for the consequences of climate change. Previous nuisance claims, filed under federal common law, were held to be displaced by federal environmental statutes. Defendants have argued that state-law-based claims should likewise be preempted. Yet while the enactment of federal regulatory statutes displaces federal common law actions for interstate pollution, such enactments do not necessarily preempt state common law actions, even where pollution crosses state boundaries, as it is more difficult to preempt state common law than it is to displace federal common …

Strassler Center Archival Collection Finding Aids
This collection is comprised of postcards that are connected to the Nazi Party in Germany. The Nazi Party, officially the National Socialist German Workers' Party (German: Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei or NSDAP), was a political party in Germany active between 1920 and 1945 that created and supported the ideology of Nazism. Its precursor, the German Workers' Party (Deutsche Arbeiterpartei; DAP), existed from 1919 to 1920. The Nazi Party emerged from the extremist German nationalist, racist and populist Freikorps paramilitary culture, which fought against the communist uprisings in post–World War I Germany. The party was …

As an urban university nestled in a bustling city, VCU is committed to having all members of the community feel safe in public spaces. The Whistles Against Street Harassment (WASH) initiative aims to improve the safety of our VCU community by (1) providing a whistle, a practical and easyto- use tool that the target or bystanders can use to disrupt street harassment, and (2) raising awareness and dialogue related to street harassment and public safety. RAINN defines street harassment as “unwanted comments, gestures, or acts directed at someone in a public space without their consent.”1 Street harassment is not …

Governors State University Operating Plan - Academic Year 2021-2022, Governors State University

Reimagining Public Safety, Brandon Hasbrouck
Reimagining Public Safety, Brandon Hasbrouck
Scholarly Articles
In the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder, abolitionists were repeatedly asked to explain what they meant by “abolish the police”—the idea so seemingly foreign that its literal meaning evaded interviewers. The narrative rapidly turned to the abolitionists’ secondary proposals, as interviewers quickly jettisoned the idea of literally abolishing the police. What the incredulous journalists failed to see was that abolishing police and prisons is not aimed merely at eliminating the collateral consequences of other social ills. Abolitionists seek to build a society in which policing and incarceration are unnecessary. Rather than a society without a means of protecting public safety, …

Mitigating Weight Stigma In The Medical System: Self-Compassion For Nursing Students, Ellen C. Joseph
Mitigating Weight Stigma In The Medical System: Self-Compassion For Nursing Students, Ellen C. Joseph
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Weight stigma is a form of oppression that has been shown to have a detrimental impact on the well-being of people with higher weight. Healthcare providers are one of the most common sources of weight stigma, and their stigmatizing beliefs have been found to be associated with differential care for patients with “obesity”. The current study aimed to explore the feasibility of the loving-kindness meditation (LKM) as a brief intervention that reduces weight bias in nursing students by increasing self-compassion, positive, other-focused emotions, and cognitive flexibility, in order to improve compassionate care for patients with higher weight. Participants (189 nursing …

Putting The "P" In Pfa: The Electronic Monitoring Of Protection From Abuse Respondents In Pennsylvania, Cameron Kehm
Putting The "P" In Pfa: The Electronic Monitoring Of Protection From Abuse Respondents In Pennsylvania, Cameron Kehm
Duquesne Law Review
Domestic violence violently claimed Alina Sheykhet's life, despite alleged "protection" from a Protection from Abuse Order ("PFA").1 Far from being an exception, Alina's story is yet another example among many cases that show how traditional protective order systems fail those who need protected most.2 However, Alina's Law can protect PFA holders through a new remedy: the electronic monitoring of PFA respondents.3 Although Alina's Law failed to make it out of committee consideration during the 2019-2020 term,4 with three modifications, legislators can reintroduce Alina's Law in a passable form that would protect Pennsylvania's most vulnerable citizens.

Biometrics And An Ai Bill Of Rights, Margaret Hu
Biometrics And An Ai Bill Of Rights, Margaret Hu
Duquesne Law Review
This Article contends that an informed discussion on an Al Bill of Rights requires grappling with biometric data collection and its integration into emerging Al systems. Biometric Al systems serve a wide range of governmental purposes, including policing, border security and immigration enforcement, and biometric cyberintelligence and biometric-enabled warfare. These systems are increasingly categorized as "high-risk" when deployed in ways that may impact fundamental constitutional rights and human rights. There is growing recognition that high-risk biometric AI systems, such as facial recognition identification, can pose unprecedented challenges to criminal procedure rights. This Article concludes that a failure to recognize these …
