Substance Abuse Disorders And Veteran Homelessness, Donald Rufus Williams
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractVeterans constitute a significant proportion of the homeless population in the United States. Studies indicate that substance abuse is a major issue these veterans face that can result in homelessness. Despite improvement since 2009, substance abuse among this population remains a significant problem. The objective of this study was to gain a better understanding of the experiences of homeless and substance-abusing veterans to provide information to government agencies that may help them develop a practical approach for addressing the issue. The social cognitive theory and Lowry's dimension on federalism provided the theoretical framework for this study. A general qualitative research …

The Social Worker’S Experience Regarding Social Isolation In Middle Schools, Jeanne Williams
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractMiddle school is a time when adolescents struggle with social challenges, self-identity, and self-esteem. Social workers are critical stakeholders to support families in schools; these professionals serve in a unique capacity to assist with attendance, provide medical and behavioralsupport and connect families with resources to mitigate barriers to students’ success. Little is known, however, about the role social workers play in preventing and addressing the social isolation of middle school students. The purpose of this project was to explore the role of the social worker as it relates to preventing and addressing the social isolation of middle school students. Self-determination …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a significant public health concern globally and in Owerri, Nigeria. The deleterious effects of diabetes have been linked to poor glycemic control. According to the International Diabetes Federation, poor glycemic control is reflected in glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels greater than 7.0%, which are associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. Studies have shown a dramatic rise in diabetic complications in Nigeria, particularly in Owerri. However, evidence is lacking on specific risk factors associated with poor glycemic control among DM patients in Owerri. With health insurance assuming a significant position in healthcare service delivery in Nigeria, addressing this …

Forgiveness Therapy And Complex Trauma: Secular Therapists’ Perspectives, Andrea Hardman
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Treatment-seeking survivors of complex trauma pursue normality and resiliency in their everyday lives. Forgiveness therapy is one treatment modality for such trauma. However, studies linking complex trauma and forgiveness therapy are minimal. The purpose of this generic qualitative inquiry was to improve treatment interventions of secular therapists’ use of forgiveness therapy, specifically, Worthington’s REACH forgiveness model with complex trauma clients. Two research questions guided this study: “What are secular therapists’ perspectives on the use of forgiveness therapy with complex trauma clients” and “What are secular therapists’ perspectives on the use of Worthington’s REACH forgiveness model with complex trauma clients.” For …

Educators’ Perception Of Their Psychosocial Support Of Elementary Students In Gabon, Africa, Michel Ikamba
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Although educators internationally have often provided care to vulnerable students who struggle to meet the needs of nutrition, health, protection, and access to essential social services, no formal social systems exist in Gabon to aid educators who work with these students. In the absence of relevant local research and drawing on Dewey’s theory of progressive education as a conceptual model, this basic qualitative study asked about educators’ perceptions in limited resource elementary schools in Gabon of the social needs and strategies employed with students who demonstrated signs of disengagement and alienation. Qualitative data collection included semi-structured recorded interviews with 12 …

Perspectives Of Girls, Families, And Healthcare Workers On Accessing Services For Adolescents With Perinatal Hiv In Nigeria, Joseph Fabian Inyang
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Adolescents living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) include those who were infected from their mother perinatally (PHIV) and those who were infected through sexual behaviors or drug use. Nigeria contributes the largest burden of children born with HIV globally, due to poor implementation of its prevention of mother-to-child transmission program. With advances in antiretroviral therapy (ART), more children and adolescents with HIV survive into adulthood. However, there are challenges to ART including access, uptake, adherence, and risks of long-term exposure. Using the social ecological model and a phenomenological approach, this qualitative study was designed to understand the experiences of adolescent …

African American Matriarch's Experiences With Reentry After Incarceration, Denise Little
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Reentering society after incarceration can be difficult for all ex-convicts but worse for African American women. Once released from prison, these women face the challenges of reintegrating back into the community and rebuilding their lives. When released, most African American women are disproportionately under-educated, have low income, and possess little to no employment skills. As mothers, these African American women have the additional challenge of supporting a family while integrating into society. This study was conducted to examine the experiences and perspectives of African American matriarchs reentering society after incarceration. A qualitative phenomenological design guided this investigation exploring 15 African …

An Analysis Of Military Service Academies Sexual Harassment And Sexual Assault Through Reports, Research, And Media Coverage, Lisa “Tana” Youn Kyung Sharp
Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects
Military Sexual Trauma (MST) at the United States Military Services Academies (MSA) remains at a concerning rate despite the MSAs’ proactive educational steps towards addressing this issue. One of the most influential factors is the very culture of the MSAs. This paper analyzes publicly-accessible governmental research and reports, peer reviewed articles, a legal publication, and media coverage. The analysis shows that there remain significant barriers to change which continue to play a role in the high frequency of MST. These barriers are low rates of accountability, difficulty in access to cadets/midshipmen by outside researchers, and the overall MSA cultural trends …
Unreality And Loss Of Self: Dissociative Experiences In Buddhist Practitioners, Jill Loving
Unreality And Loss Of Self: Dissociative Experiences In Buddhist Practitioners, Jill Loving
Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects
On the surface, the Buddhist idea of emptiness and experiences of depersonalization and derealization seem to have significant overlap. Meditations on emptiness in the Buddhist tradition seek to lead meditators to observe the ego as illusory and empty of inherent content as one step in the journey to liberate oneself from suffering. Conversely, dissociation is generally an involuntary, automatic response to severe trauma that can become more common or chronic in an individual over time. Topographically, these experiences may look similar; both include a sense of unreality of the self and often of the broader world. However, differences in stimulus …

Superwoman Schema: Fighting Back With Holistic Therapy, Chavonne Good
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
For decades, Black women have upheld the stereotype of being consistently strong, capable, tenacious, and unwavering throughout life’s many challenges. Unfortunately, while being resolute in their desire to succeed against all odds, many Black women have unknowingly embraced the characteristics of a phenomenon known as Superwoman Schema. Superwoman Schema consists of five characteristics that are not inherently negative. However, when Black women consistently embody these traits which include the determination to succeed and to be strong, and an obligation to help others; they may neglect their own self-care needs. Subsequently, while neglecting themselves, focusing on others, and continuously trying to …

Implementation Of New Teaching Strategies By Psychosocial Rehabilitation Center Staff To Increase Member Participation And Retention Of Newly Referred Members, Joseph Warren Ledesma Perez
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Non-profit organizations like psychosocial rehabilitation centers operate largely on reimbursements and funding from government agencies and charitable organizations, respectively. Since reimbursements are based on units of service provided, the center’s operations rely heavily on the attendance and participation of its members in the provided sessions. Charitable institutions, also require fund recipients to provide a report of outcomes and the impact the funds have on the recipients or the community at large. Members’ participation at the chosen site was reported to be low, which led to a projected unsustainability of operations if the numbers did not improve. Equipping the staff facilitating …

Improving Self-Care Awareness Among Undergraduate Nursing Students, D'Anna Helms
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
The purpose of this DNP project was to improve self-care (SC) awareness among undergraduate nursing students by educating on the use of constructive SC activities. Twenty-two senior level nursing students attended an educational seminar, completed the Mindful Self-Care Scale – Clinical (MSCS-C) pre- and post-survey, and reflective journaling. A paired-samples t test was calculated to compare the mean pretest score to the mean posttest score. The mean on the pretest was 77.68 (sd= 9.33), and the mean on the posttest was 75.27 (sd= 31.59). A significant increase from pretest to posttest was found (t (21) = .307, p < .05). Thematical analysis revealed enhanced awareness and incorporation of constructive SC activities. Educational interventions which seek to improve SC awareness will generate practical and sustainable acts of SC, thus improving students’ overall success and further empowering students in their transition from graduate to licensed nurses.

Teacher Resilience, Kristen Whipple
Teacher Resilience, Kristen Whipple
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
The main purpose of this quantitative research study was to explore the influences that impact teacher resilience. Seven factors that potentially protect teacher resilience were chosen: competency, self-efficacy, agency, relationships, organizational culture, altruism, and sense of humor. These factors were tested against years of service categories and self-perceived resilience scores to determine if relationships exist. A two-part online survey gathered demographic information, self-perceived resilience scores, and resilience factor data from American PreK-12 teachers. To answer the three guiding research questions, the statistical tests of multiple linear regression, Pearson’s r correlation coefficient, and chi-square test of independence were utilized. The …
