Aim: To determine whether antihypertensive medication (AHM) acting through the renin angiotensin system (RAS-AHM), compared with other AHM, can mitigate effects on cognitive function and risk for impairment in a population with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Materials and Methods: This secondary analysis of the randomized controlled Action for Health in Diabetes (Look AHEAD) study included 712 community-dwelling participants who were followed over 15 years. Logistic regression was used to relate RAS-AHM use to cognitive impairment, and linear regression was used to relate RAS-AHM use to domain-specific cognitive function after adjusting for potential confounders. Results: A total of 563 individuals …

Suicide At The Intersection Of Race And Gender, Marina Geider
Suicide At The Intersection Of Race And Gender, Marina Geider
Masters Theses
Sociological studies have examined suicide rate differences between groups since the work of Durkheim in 1897, and current literature still draws on his classic theories and methods. Although research has begun identifying the social factors that affect the suicides of Black and White populations differentially, little progress has been made towards an understanding of Black female suicide. The present study takes an intersectional approach to Durkheim's social integration-regulation thesis to bridge this gap. Several negative binomial regression analyses were employed to model suicide counts for Black men, Black women, non-Hispanic White men, and non-Hispanic White women in the United States. …

Dnp Final Report: Multimodal Pain Management To Improve Patient Satisfaction In Total Joint Replacement Patients, Dana A. Carns
DNP Final Reports
Pain is a costly result of total joint replacement (TJR) surgery. The effect of pain can extend not only to chronic medical problems for patients but also to the hospital’s bottom line by decreasing patient satisfaction. A systematic literature search was performed, and evidence was appraised that supported the efficacy of a standardized multimodal pain management protocol to decrease pain and improve satisfaction in TJR patients. The evidence-based multimodal pain management protocol was implemented during a one-month period in patients undergoing total knee or total hip replacements. Key outcomes were examined and compared to the body of evidence and to …
The Role Of Social Bonds, Self-Control, And Specific Interventions On Outcomes For Serious Juvenile Offenders, Tina Fowler
The Role Of Social Bonds, Self-Control, And Specific Interventions On Outcomes For Serious Juvenile Offenders, Tina Fowler
All Dissertations
Hirschi’s (2008) Social Control theory posits that the strength or weakness of social bonds (i.e., attachment, commitment, involvement, and belief) may impact the likelihood of offending. Youth who enter the juvenile justice system often have weakened social bonds to family, school, peers, and the community, which may contribute to a higher likelihood of offending, future involvement in the juvenile justice system, and other negative outcomes. The current study examined the impact of social bonds, self-control, and specific interventions on offending among a sample of serious juvenile offenders from the Research on Pathways to Desistance dataset. This longitudinal dataset includes a …

Examining Community Engagement Strategies In Richmond, Va Nonprofits Addressing Food Insecurity: A Case Study, Moné Bailey
School of Professional and Continuing Studies Nonprofit Studies Capstone Projects
Food in America is often a reflection of values, cultures and customs. Food choices give way to your upbringing, geographic location and even socioeconomic status. In the United States, 8.6 million adults live in households with very low food security. As nonprofits begin to shift from a charity-based structure in addressing food insecurity to an equity-based approach, it is important to understand how they are effectively engaging the community. Community engagement is a fundamental practice for nonprofits to build trust, foster relationships and empower the community. Though the concept of community engagement has been an important theme across disciplines, there …

The project is a top down 2D retro adventure game made using modern techniques and learning from game development in the 30 years since these games were released.
The Rise Of Terrorism In Africa And What It Means For U.S. Policymakers, Bridget Mary Hughes
The Rise Of Terrorism In Africa And What It Means For U.S. Policymakers, Bridget Mary Hughes
Master's Theses
This thesis utilizes three case studies to measure the rise of terrorism in Africa. This qualitative data leads the reader to one ultimate question: what does the rise in terrorism in Africa mean for the United States (U.S.) and U.S. policymakers, National Security academia, students in National Security, if anything at all? The answer is: if civilian and military compounds are being targeted by these violent extremists, as these three case studies demonstrate, it is my recommendation that U.S. policymakers cease sending troops to the African theater and, instead, allocate funding to the citizens and nonprofits of the countries whom …

Misinformation Of Mental Health On Social Media And How It Affects Those Who View It, Kathryn Johnson
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Social media’s prevalence has grown through the years with 4.63 billion users around the world as of January 2022 (Global Social Media Stats). With the prevalence of social media, the question of the information, or in this case, the misinformation, that is on media platforms, especially about mental health, is one that needs to be brought to light. Mental health issues and disorders have become more of an open topic recently, and with the outreach on social media around mental health, the spread of misinformation can reach many audiences. This study analyzes just how potent the misinformation on mental health …

A Patchwork Community : Exploring Belonging, Gender Roles, And God's Gifts Among Progressive American Mennonites, Christa D. Mylin
A Patchwork Community : Exploring Belonging, Gender Roles, And God's Gifts Among Progressive American Mennonites, Christa D. Mylin
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This dissertation demonstrates that progressive Mennonites in southern Pennsylvania struggle to find belonging within their congregations due to the fluid nature of Mennonite affiliations. Mennonites critically examined their institutions and relations with each other, and this critique often led to schism. This research addresses how a recent schism among progressive Mennonites led some people to experience nonbelonging and highlighted other conflicting values that people had within their conference. An overview of Mennonite history demonstrated that Mennonites have often formed separate fellowships when disagreements could not be resolved. However, this history also demonstrated that Mennonites have been adept at interpreting their …

Executive Functioning In Children And Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes : Associations With Hba1c, Glycemic Variability, And Household Income, Victoria Louise Ledsham
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Type-1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) has been repeatedly linked to executive functioning (EF) deficits in children and adolescents but the mechanisms underlying this association are not well understood. Chronic hyperglycemia — frequently measured as glycosylated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels — and increased glycemic variability have both been proposed as risk factors for EF difficulties in this population, but it is unclear whether they each uniquely reflect T1DM-related risk for EF deficits. Furthermore, few studies have considered interactions between glycemic factors and family-level risk factors in shaping children’s EF development. Particularly, household income may exacerbate risk associations between HbA1c or glycemic variability …
Two Case Studies Examining How International Graduate Teaching Assistants Built Mathematical Literacy Knowledge Within The Affordances And Constraints Of A Calculus Instructional System, Patricia A. Rand
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
As universities contend with high rates of student attrition from intended STEM majors, due to many students’ difficulty in passing entry-level mathematics courses, they must examine the systems they have in place and determine how best to support these students. Historically, graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) are assigned to introductory calculus classes, which serve as undergraduate-level gatekeeping courses. On one hand, this allows for additional instructors to assist mathematics faculty; however, many universities do not provide adequate training in pedagogy for their GTAs. Untrained GTAs may not have the requisite pedagogical content knowledge to teach and support struggling students. GTAs should …
Understanding Sense Of Belonging Of Students Of Color Attending A Liberal Arts College, Jessica Wenger
Understanding Sense Of Belonging Of Students Of Color Attending A Liberal Arts College, Jessica Wenger
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
College access programs have been created to provide students of color opportunities to attend college. The Posse Foundation selects promising urban high school students to attend highly selective colleges and universities across the country. College success is dependent on a variety of factors, two of which are successful social and academic integration into the campus community (Tinto, 1993). Related to integration, sense of belonging is the feeling that an individual belongs in their environment (McMillan & Chavis, 1986).
Spatio-Temporal Analyses Of The Relationships Between Stop, Question And Frisk And Crime In New York City, Haemi Won
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Previous research has shown mixed findings on a deterrent effect of Stop, Question and Frisk (SQF) on crime. As SQF is one of the most fundamental methods of police crime control, an accurate examination of the relationship between SQF and crime is critical. This dissertation examined spatio-temporal interactions of crime and those of SQF respectively, and then the spatial relationships between SQF and crime at microgeographic level, controlling for the effect of the street network. Using inhomogeneous cross K function with the exact location x-y coordinates of each point of both SQF and crime, this dissertation explored the spatio-temporal relationships …

Regulation Of A Shared Focus In Open-Ended Collaborative Inquiry, Simona Pesaresi
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Essential to a flourishing society in a changing environment, knowledge creation has become pervasive across social sectors. Creative work with knowledge and ideas requires dynamic forms of collaboration in which individuals adapt goals as new advances and problems emerge. To prepare students for creative knowledge work, new classroom designs using knowledge building pedagogy engage learners in a process of open-ended inquiry as a community. This type of inquiry involves students taking the responsibility for identifying and pursuing ever-evolving knowledge goals that lead to deeper conceptual understanding through a path not known in advance. However, a major challenge is to understand …
Innovation Capacity In Local Government Organizations : A Comparative Case Study Of Three Innovation Labs In The U.S, Qianli Yuan
Innovation Capacity In Local Government Organizations : A Comparative Case Study Of Three Innovation Labs In The U.S, Qianli Yuan
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Innovation in the public sector is a high priority on the agenda of both practitioners and academics, as government recently faces increasing citizens’ demands and growing wicked problems. It has been increasingly regarded as necessary to improve current practices that improve government performance in terms of efficiency, effectiveness, and equity. In response to this demand for innovation, many government organizations established innovation labs to strengthen their capacity to introduce new and innovative solutions. Being agile and small and having a certain level of autonomy, they are advocated as a “safe space” that applies a variety of approaches, methods, and toolkits …
Essays On Career Progression Among The Underrepresented In Academic Biomedicine, Allison Nunez
Essays On Career Progression Among The Underrepresented In Academic Biomedicine, Allison Nunez
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Representation of women and minorities in academia has historically lagged behind their white, male counterparts at all levels, from student to tenured professor. An important milestone in this progression in the biomedical sciences is the achievement of last authorship, which serves as a proxy for career independence. This work investigates gender gaps in last authorship using population-level data on biomedical publications, and further considers how these gaps may be a result of different rates of progression through the early career process. Additionally, the role a like-gender mentor can play in early career productivity and progress toward that important milestone is …

Tiny Tusks Breastfeeding And Infant Support: Breastfeeding's Effects On Maternal Mental Health, Anna Jacobs
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses
Breastfeeding has proven to be beneficial for infant health and maternal physical health, but there are variable outcomes for maternal mental health. This literature review explores the relationship between breastfeeding and maternal mental health, a topic that is often disregarded when discussing breastfeeding with mothers. After an internship with Tiny Tusks Breastfeeding and Infant Support, a program to make breastfeeding more accessible at Razorback Athletics events, maternal mental health related to breastfeeding was shown to be a topic in need of more current research. This objective of this literature review was to determine how breastfeeding can impact maternal mental health …
Obstacles To Proving 24-Hour Lighting Is Cruel And Unusual Under Eighth Amendment Jurisprudence, Lauren Jaech
Obstacles To Proving 24-Hour Lighting Is Cruel And Unusual Under Eighth Amendment Jurisprudence, Lauren Jaech
Washington Law Review
Twenty-four-hour lighting causes sleep deprivation, depression, and other serious disorders for incarcerated individuals, yet courts often do not consider it to be cruel and unusual. To decide if prison conditions violate the Eighth Amendment’s prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment, courts follow a two-part inquiry that requires examining the intent of prison officials (known as the subjective prong) as well as the degree of seriousness of the alleged cruel or unusual condition (the objective prong). Incarcerated individuals often file complaints challenging 24-hour lighting conditions. Whether they succeed on these claims may depend on the circuit in which they reside. Judges …
Disorderly Content, Ari Waldman
Disorderly Content, Ari Waldman
Washington Law Review
Content moderation plays an increasingly important role in the creation and dissemination of expression, thought, and knowledge. And yet, throughout the social media ecosystem, nonnormative and LGBTQ+ sexual expression is disproportionately taken down, restricted, and banned. The current sociolegal literature, which focuses on content moderation as a whole and sees echoes of formal law in the evolution of its values and mechanics, insufficiently captures the ways in which those principles and practices are not only discriminatory, but also resemble structures of power that have long been used to police queer sexual behavior in public spaces.
This Article contributes to the …
