‘That Teacher Really Likes Me’ - Student-Teacher Interactions That Initiate Teacher Expectation Effects By Developing Caring Relationships, Olivia Johnston, Helen Wildy, Jennifer Shand
‘That Teacher Really Likes Me’ - Student-Teacher Interactions That Initiate Teacher Expectation Effects By Developing Caring Relationships, Olivia Johnston, Helen Wildy, Jennifer Shand
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Teacher expectations are associated with student academic achievement, but no research has generated new theory that explains how teacher expectation effects occur from students' perspectives. A substantive theory explaining the process through which students reconcile with their teachers' expectations is presented in this paper, emphasising the role of caring student-teacher relationships in teacher expectation effects on academic achievement. The theory was constructed with 25 grade 10 participants across three Western Australian secondary schools, with data including 100 interviews and 175 classroom observations. The analysis and synthesis of the data confirmed that the students acted in ways that they reflected improved …
Exploring Support Strategies For Improving Nursing Student Retention, Danielle Edge, Nicholas Gladstone
Exploring Support Strategies For Improving Nursing Student Retention, Danielle Edge, Nicholas Gladstone
School of Nursing and Midwifery
Nursing student attrition is a significant concern in many countries, including the UK. Higher education institutions (HEIs) are seeking creative ways of improving retention and it is crucial to understand which support strategies encourage students to persist with their studies. This article describes a systematic review of the literature exploring nursing students' experiences and perceptions of support strategies used by HEIs to reduce attrition and improve retention. Having a sense of belonging, a connection with the university, self-confidence, self-efficacy and motivation appeared to make students more likely to stay on their course. Several support strategies appeared to enhance retention, including …
Do Educators Value The Promotion Of Students’ Wellbeing? Quantifying Educators’ Attitudes Toward Wellbeing Promotion, David Byrne, Colm Mcguinness Phd, Aiden Carthy Phd
Do Educators Value The Promotion Of Students’ Wellbeing? Quantifying Educators’ Attitudes Toward Wellbeing Promotion, David Byrne, Colm Mcguinness Phd, Aiden Carthy Phd
Articles
Educators’ attitudes toward Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and health and wellbeing promotion can significantly influence the success (or otherwise) of such policies and practices. While numerous studies exist, from which a broad understanding of such attitudes can be garnered, there is currently no attendant measurement which quantifies educators attitudes regarding the promotion of student wellbeing. The aim of this study was to address this gap in knowledge by quantifying the degree to which educators are positively or negatively disposed to the promotion of student wellbeing. The Attitudes Toward Wellbeing Promotion (ATWP) scale was administered …

Developing, Training, And Equipping Lay Ministers To Serve In Leadership Roles At Small African American Churches, Angelia V. Lewis
Developing, Training, And Equipping Lay Ministers To Serve In Leadership Roles At Small African American Churches, Angelia V. Lewis
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This thesis project explores the validity of a ministry training manual for developing, training, and equipping lay ministers at Fredericksburg Missionary Baptist Church. It assumes that if church members have leadership tools, they will use them to become more effective leaders. However, lay ministers often serve in ministry leadership roles without formal training. They should be trained and equipped by church leaders to lead effectively. Therefore, the question that this thesis project ask is, "Will a development and implementation of a leadership training manual equip lay ministers?" The Scripture is the primary literature resource for God’s provision in developing ministry …

Sky High Anxiolytics For Rocket City Women: A Holistic Health Approach Offered, Sandra L. Bruno
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The action research project aimed to implement a counseling model to equip clients experiencing anxiety with a holistic health approach. Anxiety is often treated by prescribed anxiolytics, although many women seeking counseling at Madison Counseling have not been formally diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. The study's goal was to provide participants with physical, mental/emotional, spiritual, and relational tools that can aid the participants in the reduction or alleviation of anxiety. The proposed model incorporated empirically proven techniques that balance the women's self to reduce symptomology by providing a healthy alternative to dealing with daily anxiety and stressors, thus reducing the …

Boosting Attendance Through Relationships, Mia Ferguson
Boosting Attendance Through Relationships, Mia Ferguson
Masters Projects
Research has shown that students who feel a sense of belonging or personal connectedness in school have higher academic achievement. This project is to help my school Westfield Preparatory High School with its attendance issues. Since COVID, we have struggled to make daily attendance, so I chose this research project to give me better insight based on the issues staff and students gave for chronic absenteeism. I created an in-service for teachers to let them know how important teacher-student relationships are. During this in-service, I will present my research to teachers and present an academic coaching program where teachers will …

A Constructivist Grounded Theory Explaining How Families Homeschooling Learners With Special Educational Needs And Disabilities Mediate Learning Experiences, Melissa Delayne Dean
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this study was to extend Feuerstein et al.’s (2006, 2010, 2015) theories of structural cognitive modifiability and mediated learning experience to the homeschool context by constructing a grounded theory that explains how families create mediated learning experiences for learners with special educational needs and disabilities in a homeschool context. Feuerstein’s theories guided this study and provided the framework to answer the central research question: How do Feuerstein’s theories of structural cognitive modifiability and mediated learning experience extend to a homeschool context for learners with special educational needs and disabilities? Purposive sampling methods were used to identify 10 …
A Research Based Approach To Implementing And Sustaining School-Wide Or District Wide Restorative Practices, Brandon M. Lane
A Research Based Approach To Implementing And Sustaining School-Wide Or District Wide Restorative Practices, Brandon M. Lane
Masters Projects
Restorative practices implementation fails for four reasons. First, districts omit or inadequately engage in a readiness to change assessment to initiate the process for RP implementation. Districts fail to identify if it is worth investing, they fail to analyze their school data in conjunction with identifying areas of school improvement to truly determine how RP can positively impact their school community. This is significant because it directly impacts districts ability to secure and sustain administrative support and teacher buy-in. Secondly, districts erroneously introduce RP as a classroom management system rather than a relational quality initiative (Vaandering, 2014; Short, Case and …

Deconstructing Gendered Vumilia (Perseverance) Theology In Times Of The Gender-Based Violence Pandemic, Esther Mombo, Heleen Joziasse
Deconstructing Gendered Vumilia (Perseverance) Theology In Times Of The Gender-Based Violence Pandemic, Esther Mombo, Heleen Joziasse
Journal of International Women's Studies
During the COVID-19 pandemic, cases of gender-based violence (GBV) dramatically increased. While the Kenyan governmental bodies are held responsible for their inadequate response to this “national disaster of GBV”, the role of the Kenyan churches is hardly criticized. The churches neither spoke out against this prevalent injustice, nor did they openly support the victims of GBV. Furthermore, it could be argued that churches, through their patriarchal structures and cultural and doctrinal teachings, have contributed to this disaster. This article is written from a woman’s perspective and focused on the notion of vumilia, or perseverance, an important notion in the lived …

Journal of International Women's Studies
This paper presents the Vatsonga cultural practices regarding widowhood and how those practices impact personal health. The purpose of the study was to gain an in-depth understanding of how the Vatsonga manages widowhood and how those practices affect the management of HIV/AIDS. This ethnographic study was conducted in Bushbuckridge and is grounded in Leininger’s theory of Culture Care Diversity and Universality. Data was collected from participants using individual face-to-face interviews and observation. In addition, ethnographic content analysis was utilized for data analysis. Results indicate that there are practices such as widow cleansing and widow inheritance that the Vatsonga people practice …
Affirming The Traditional Teaching Of Imbusa As A Tool Against Gender-Based Violence, Sylvia Mukuka
Affirming The Traditional Teaching Of Imbusa As A Tool Against Gender-Based Violence, Sylvia Mukuka
Journal of International Women's Studies
The main objective of this paper is to provide light on the traditional teaching of Imbusa, which is utilized to combat the problem of gender-based violence. Violence against women has increased to incredible rates in modern societies, to the point where many women continue to perpetuate anguish in the form of physical abuse, assaults, and molestation, and all these social evils have left women badly devastated, scared, disoriented, and defenceless. Violence entails the use of physical force, such as sexual assault, to injure, mutilate, or kill humans, and occasionally to ruin an individual's life. This paper examines several forms of …

Covid-19 And Ubuntu Disruptions: Curbing The Violence Against Women And Girls With Disabilities Through African Women’S Theology Of Disability, Sinenhlanhla S. Chisale
Journal of International Women's Studies
The COVID-19 restrictions that require the lockdown of public and economic activities heighten the levels of sexual and gender-based violence against women and girls with disabilities. As the COVID-19 pandemic spreads across the globe, particularly in Africa, women and girls with disabilities become vulnerable to sexual and gender-based violence, highlighting that the home is no longer a safe space for the vulnerable. The restrictions have eroded the community structures that are promoted by Ubuntu to protect vulnerable community members from violence and different forms of abuse. This article grapples with the question of African women’s theology of disability and Ubuntu …
The Role Of Social Response To Disclosure In Relgious And Spiritual Coping And Recovery From Sexual Assault, Megan Wolfe
The Role Of Social Response To Disclosure In Relgious And Spiritual Coping And Recovery From Sexual Assault, Megan Wolfe
Theses and Dissertations
Many factors can discourage survivors of sexual assault from reporting their assaults. Even those survivors who disclose, their reporting experiences may not leave them feeling empowered or that they have received adequate support to begin the healing process after disclosure. Using a mixed methods approach, we examined the relationship between religious and spiritual coping strategies, the experience of social disclosure, and symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modeling (SEM). We further used qualitative data examining the ways that participants used religious/spiritual coping strategies in response to the trauma of sexual …

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transexual (Lgbt) U.S. Latinx Catholics And The U.S. Catholic Church: A Critique Of Certain Aspects Of Roman Catholic Moral Teaching In Light Of A Latinx Theological Anthropology, Leonardo Daniel Mendoza
LMU Theses and Dissertations
This Capstone Research Project aims to address the certain aspects of Roman Catholic moral teaching. Throughout this project I argue that when it comes to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transexual and Queer (LGBTQ+) Catholics, the moral teaching is essentially corrupt. This paper begins by providing an overview of current Catholic teaching relevant to LGBTQ+ persons. In the second section I focus on the lived experience on the Latinx LGBTQ+ community in the United States to demonstrate several flaws in Catholic moral tradition. I place a special emphasis on the Latinx LGBTQ+ community in Florida as I base my argument on …
