Deconstructing The University: Contemporary Dei, Neoliberal Rationalities, And The Abolition Of The Administrative Apparatus, Jonah Henkle Oct 2022

Deconstructing The University: Contemporary Dei, Neoliberal Rationalities, And The Abolition Of The Administrative Apparatus, Jonah Henkle

Media and Cultural Studies Honors Projects

The following chapters attempt to develop some working theories to combat capitalist exploitation and racist and gendered oppression in the university, culminating in a call for the abolition of the university’s administrative apparatus. The project is divided broadly into two parts, which are referential to each other, but maintain slightly different areas of focus. Part 1 details a preliminary critique of the political-economy of the contemporary neoliberal university, drawing influence from Marxian economics and structuralist theories of ideology, critiquing contemporary discourses of diversity, equity and inclusivity (DEI). Part 2 focuses more directly on issues pertaining to oppression and difference, maintaining …

Enhancing Quality Of Life For Ovarian Cancer Patients, Kelly Marie Liguori Oct 2022

Enhancing Quality Of Life For Ovarian Cancer Patients, Kelly Marie Liguori

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Problem Statement: Ovarian cancer is associated with a delayed onset of symptoms and late diagnosis and therefore has increased morbidity and mortality (Momenimovahed et al., 2019). These patients face multiple health complications, frequent hospital admissions, and may suffer from an overall poor quality of life (Marks, 2020). Purpose: This project aimed to determine if implementing FACT-O, a patient-reported quality-of-life screening tool, led to increased pastoral care consults and patient-reported quality-of-life for ovarian cancer patients. Methods: Iowa Model of Evidence-Based Practice was used for this project. Upon admission to 3Tower at CMC Main during a 3-month period, all patients with ovarian …

Forming Saints In A Digital Context, Mark R. Teasdale Oct 2022

Forming Saints In A Digital Context, Mark R. Teasdale

Great Commission Research Journal

Biblical and scholarly sources agree on the importance of forming Christians to seek after holy living to make them more effective evangelists, such that the ministries of evangelism and spiritual formation are intertwined. They also agree that one of the primary roles of the church is to provide for this formation. However, the practices for doing this have been complicated by the heavy move toward digital ministry because of COVID-19. Congregations can continue this formational work even in highly digital contexts by helping Christians tell their story through lifelogging, providing rituals and disciplines to sanctify time and physical spaces, and …

Assessment Of Nurse Practitioners' Knowledge And Attitudes Related To Hospice Referrals, Bailee Cerra Oct 2022

Assessment Of Nurse Practitioners' Knowledge And Attitudes Related To Hospice Referrals, Bailee Cerra

Doctoral Projects

Hospice care is a comprehensive group of services provided to patients who have been determined to have six months or less to live. Data suggests that hospice services in the United States are underutilized, and referrals are made too late for patients to reap the full benefits of services (Mulville et al., 2018). Additionally, Mississippi is among the lowest-ranked states for hospice services (Centers of Medicare & Medicaid Services [CMS], 2019). Many barriers exist that impede patients from receiving timely hospice referrals; however, the primary focus of this research project is nurse practitioners’ attitudes and knowledge toward hospice care and …

“Living In Trauma 24/7”: A Qualitative Exploration Of Factors Contributing To Secondary Traumatic Stress And Burnout Among Student Services Professionals Working With Marginalized Student Populations, Delia Sanchez, Portia A. Jackson Preston, Christine Vu, Lucia Alcala

Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice

Higher education professionals are at risk of secondary traumatic stress (STS) as a result of supporting students experiencing trauma, while overwhelming workload, inadequate resources, and unclear role responsibilities may lead to burnout. This study explored contributing factors to STS and burnout and coping efforts among faculty, students, and staff working in a capacity in which they provide non-instructional support to programs or centers focusing on marginalized student populations. Participants (N=56) represented twenty-two U.S. regional universities, and were a subset of respondents to a larger mixed-methods study (n=559). Qualitative responses to three open-ended questions on challenges and coping efforts were analyzed …

The Management Of Newly Diagnosed Probable Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease In Acute Rehabilitation Setting: A Case Report, Royce Copeland, Shefali Amin, Anthony Donato

Advances in Clinical Medical Research and Healthcare Delivery

Abstract

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is a rare and fatal neurodegenerative disease. The purpose of this report is to demonstrate the role of inpatient rehabilitation for a patient recently diagnosed with probable Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. A 62-year-old male was readmitted to an acute care hospital after a recent mechanical fall. For several weeks, he had a constellation of symptoms, including cognitive impairment and progressive memory loss, gait and postural instability, 20 pounds of unintentional weight loss, visual hallucinations, myoclonus, and hypophonia. After an extensive workup, a diagnosis of probable Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease was made, and he was transferred to an acute inpatient rehabilitation hospital. …

Pastoral Pitfalls: Solutions To Navigating The Stresses Of Twenty-First Century Ministry, Chris Moore Sep 2022

Pastoral Pitfalls: Solutions To Navigating The Stresses Of Twenty-First Century Ministry, Chris Moore

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

American church clergy and their families are suffering from the effects of Twenty-First Century ministry and the stresses of the local church, according to research from the Fuller Institute, Barna Group, and Pastoral Care Inc. Much of the research in this area and its effects on the clergy and churches occurred more than a decade ago. Through updated research and surveys of current Southern Baptist ministers in the Baptist General Convention of Texas, this thesis will offer solutions to how these dangers can be lessened or alleviated. Through the presentation of updated statistics, the seriousness of this problem for the …

A Phenomenological Study Of Clergy Job-Related Stress And Stress-Coping During Covid-19, Peter Michael Foxwell Sep 2022

A Phenomenological Study Of Clergy Job-Related Stress And Stress-Coping During Covid-19, Peter Michael Foxwell

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the lived experience of stress and stress-coping of five Michigan pastors who led their Evangelical Free Church of America (EFCA) congregations through the 2020-21 COVID-19 pandemic. Stress is generally defined as the psychophysiological response to a perceived threat or stressor, and stress-coping is generally defined as intentional behaviors designed to manage stress. The theoretical background of this study is the transactional theory of stress and coping (TTSC) (Lazarus, 1966; Lazarus & Folkman, 1984) as it relates to pastors’ lived experience of ministry-related stress and coping in crisis conditions. The rationales for …

How The “Lessons Learned” From Emergency Remote Teaching Can Enrich European Higher Education In The Post-Covid-19 Era, Dimitrios Vlachopoulos Sep 2022

How The “Lessons Learned” From Emergency Remote Teaching Can Enrich European Higher Education In The Post-Covid-19 Era, Dimitrios Vlachopoulos

Higher Learning Research Communications

More than 2.5 years after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and the lessons learned from the implementation of emergency remote teaching in (European) higher education, this essay reflects on how universities, governments, and policy makers can re-imagine higher education in the post-COVID-19 era. It envisions universities as inclusive, student-centered, and accessible organizations capable of meeting diverse learning needs through technology-enhanced high-quality academic programs. This can be achieved through wide-scale uptake of blended learning in higher education; capacity building for stakeholders on online/blended learning; consideration of the unique needs of its stakeholders; and a holistic quality assurance framework. The author’s …
