Rethinking Organizational Structures To Support Digital Innovation, Lindsey Wharton, Devin Soper
Rethinking Organizational Structures To Support Digital Innovation, Lindsey Wharton, Devin Soper
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
This paper presents a vision for supporting the growth and development of innovative digital services in research libraries. While libraries have been undergoing digital transformation for decades, we have seen a flowering of new digital services in recent years, from research support services related to data and digital publishing to learning support services that seek to make our pedagogy more accessible, engaging, and suited to the needs of 21st-century learners. The question of how best to support these services structurally within an organization remains an open one, however, and there is little consistency in how this is accomplished across different …

Managing Risk And Knowledge: Frameworks To Guide Knowledge-Enabled Technology Transfer, Martin Lipa Dr, Anne Greene
Managing Risk And Knowledge: Frameworks To Guide Knowledge-Enabled Technology Transfer, Martin Lipa Dr, Anne Greene
Level 3
Technology transfer is not only about the transfer of technology, but also about the transfer of knowledge, as evidenced by definitions of KM within the biopharma industry and beyond. However, knowledge transfer is often not well structured and its effectiveness – in particular for tacit knowledge (i.e., know how) – is an opportunity for improvement which can lead to many benefits. This article profiles recent research into the topic of improving knowledge transfer during technology transfer and presents several recently developed frameworks for improving such. The article furthermore explains how the frameworks can be co-deployed in support of robust knowledge …
Reckoning With Organizational Identity And Innovation In Research Libraries, Neil Romanosky
Reckoning With Organizational Identity And Innovation In Research Libraries, Neil Romanosky
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Who or what an organization thinks it is—its sense of identity—greatly informs the choices it makes. Yet an organization’s identity, which provides coherence and stability, may constrain or enable an organization’s capacity for innovation, which at its core is about doing new or different things. This paper explores the dynamics of organizational identity and innovation through a qualitative study involving leaders from eleven U.S. and Canadian academic research libraries—organizations and a profession that are experiencing an abundance of change and identity threats. A major finding of this research is that the very process of scoping and defining innovation can enable …
Model Classrooms: One Approach To Teacher Shortages, Ashlee Boothe
Model Classrooms: One Approach To Teacher Shortages, Ashlee Boothe
The Journal of Advancing Education Practice
Due to a nationwide teacher shortage, instructional leaders are utilizing more alternatively certified teachers than in the past, creating a problem for principals (Darling-Hammond & Berry, 2006; Birinci and Amburgey, 2022). Teachers in alternatively certified programs often lack pedagogy due to an absence of educational training, and as a result, principals hire teachers who are inadequately trained for the classroom. Therefore, there is a need to improve the way instructional leaders prepare alternatively certified teachers. The solution to this dilemma is creating professional learning through model classrooms, a term coined by the author. Model classrooms serve as exemplars to other …

Lgbtq+ Congregants Navigating Identity In The Context Of "Welcoming But Not Affirming" Evangelical, Pentecostal, And Non-Denominational Religious Institutions: A Queer Narrative Analysis, Sarah E. Rasmussen
University Honors Theses
Welcoming but not affirming Evangelical, Pentecostal, and non-denominational churches invite LGBTQ+ people to attend their church, but do not affirm their identity as a gender and/or sexual minority. Because of this, they restrict LGBTQ+ attendees from participating in leadership, paid staff positions, and ministry work. LGBTQ+ attendees are often not aware of these restrictive policies initially. The current study aims to examine how LGBTQ+ people navigate their faith and identity within welcoming but not affirming church spaces through narrative analysis. Fifteen participants engaged in an interview, where they were asked about their experience within welcoming but not affirming church spaces. …

Fostering A Sense Of Belonging In Urban Extension For Internal And External Stakeholders, Ramona Madhosingh-Hector, Linda M. Seals
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
In urban areas, the communities are as diverse as the issues, and different educational and engagement strategies must be deployed to support urban Extension clientele. Urban communities must connect with and feel a sense of “belonging” with Extension–this connection can strengthen Extension’s presence and value proposition to urban constituents. This study found that although Extension was engaged in efforts to support belonging, its efforts were hampered by a lack of collaboration and commitment to supporting a system-wide effort to change the culture. Intentionality, emotional intelligence, and dialogue were presented as strategies to foster a sense of belonging for Extension personnel …

Instructor’S Manual: Single Carrot Theatre, Stephanie Chin, Sidney Pink
Journal of Arts Entrepreneurship Education
Many arts organizations struggle to find long-term financial sustainability.1 There are limited opportunities to build sustainable infrastructure and sources of long-term funding as organizations grow.2 Such risks are particularly challenging for organizations beyond the early startup phase that garner excitement and novelty. Single Carrot Theatre followed a traditional path of establishing a central theatre space for their operations, but unfortunately it created financial strain on the organization that almost resulted in permanent closure. With an established culture of innovation and a focus on artistic decision making, the company decided to implement an innovative organizational and artistic pivot. The company has …

Advocating For Holistic Admissions Review: Implications For Master’S Level Counselor Education Programs, Dominique S. Hammonds, Lucy L. Purgason
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
Positioning diversity at the forefront of counselor education has been an ongoing movement for well over the last decade. Attention has been given to considering recruitment and retention practices, with CACREP requiring counselor education programs to show evidence of ways this is enacted. Building on this work, counselor educators have brought needed attention to questioning how structural inequity permeates policies and procedures within counselor education programs. A critical consideration of counselor education admissions practices through an equity lens has been lacking in the literature. In this article, the authors make the case for the use of holistic admissions review as …

Culture: The Key To Shifting Your Organization During Post-Pandemic, Qiang Qiang
The Scholarship Without Borders Journal
Organizations are facing challenges and obstacles caused by COVID-19. After widespread vaccines, lifestyle became normal and entered the post-pandemic era. Organizational culture is the key that organizations shift during the post-pandemic. In this article, there are three recommendations that the organization can think of to make cultural changes effectively. First, the organization needs to assess and diagnose if it is an agile organization. Second, Lewin’s change model and the MCR framework can help the organization manage the changing process. Last, leadership is the key to ensuring the change is in the right direction. The leadership discussion focuses on evolutionary leadership …

Surviving A Pandemic Using Alternate Assessments, Amanda Harsy, Sarah Klanderman, Marie Meyer, Michael Smith, Brittany Stephenson, Cara Jill Sulyok
ACMS Conference Proceedings 2022
The COVID-19 pandemic is one of the most unexpected global challenges of the early 21st century. It has been devastating to healthcare systems and provided unprecedented difficulties for educators worldwide as on-ground classes were suddenly transitioned online. In addition to navigating an unknown virus, educators also faced the challenge of determining how to continue to teach and assess students during this new normal. In this paper, we will share several assessment practices we used in online and hybrid courses. We will include lessons learned from transitioning “traditional” assessments, group projects, alternative/mastery exams, and oral exams to online and hybrid classes. …

Making A Chef’S Heart Sing! The Role Of Positive Health And Well-Being - Moving Towards A Positive Health Framework For Culinary Arts Education., Annette Sweeney
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
Though singing is not a practice associated with culinary arts, the utilisation of the analogy illustrates the motivation and application of authentic positive health in practice that benefits well-being and flourishing. While the focus in most universities is to develop the positive qualities of students for a modern workplace, many of the practices are “at odds with contemporary models of education and evidence emerging from the scientific study of well-being” (Oades et al. 2011, 433). Of significance is that “more well-being is synergistic with better learning” (Seligman et al. 2009, 294). Mindful learning as a lens of awareness, leads to …

Understanding Leadership For Adaptive Change In Catholic Schools: A Complexity Perspective, Andrew F. Miller, Anna Noble, Patrick Mcquillan
Journal of Catholic Education
In an era of decline and crisis, Catholic school leaders have been encouraged to find innovative ways to enhance a school’s operational vitality. Yet to this point, most research on educational change in Catholic schools has focused on the technical tasks school principals can take to “save” individual schools. In this article, we apply a complexity perspective to educational change leadership in Catholic education: leadership for adaptive change. Based on a new empirical analysis of the professional experiences of two Catholic school principals working at four different parish schools, we demonstrate in this article how leadership for adaptive change can …

Tell Me A Story: Exploring The Use Of Narratives To Reduce Backlash To Organizational Diversity Initiatives, Desmond W. Leung
Tell Me A Story: Exploring The Use Of Narratives To Reduce Backlash To Organizational Diversity Initiatives, Desmond W. Leung
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Diversity initiatives represent key priorities for many organizations, but research and recent high-profile examples suggest that diversity initiatives can generate significant backlash, particularly among organizational members. The primary aim of this study is to investigate how narrative forms of diversity initiative messaging may attenuate backlash among organizational members compared to more traditional expository forms of diversity initiative messaging. Drawing on research related to narrative communication, persuasion, and diversity, I proposed a first-stage dual moderated mediation model where psychological reactance and perceptions of realistic threat mediate the negative effect of narrative (vs. expository) diversity messaging on backlash. Additionally, I examined whether …

Lean healthcare is a field of research that studies the use of effective goal setting and scientific thinking to drive improvements in the healthcare industry. Lean has been effectively applied in healthcare settings to improve efficiency, patient satisfaction, clinical outcomes, and safety. There have been, however, varying degrees of success achieved in healthcare organizations effectively implementing a lean management system. The problem addressed in this research is that many healthcare organizations in the United States that seek to improve quality and reduce costs by implementing a lean management system are unable to sustain the lean management system thereby missing out …
