Improved Data Communication With Frontline Staff, David Sprecher
Improved Data Communication With Frontline Staff, David Sprecher
Master's Projects and Capstones
Problem: Frequently, communication from the Quality Department (QD) needs to be filtered through several organizational layers without first-hand knowledge of what message was given to frontline staff. Current mechanisms of communication between the QD and front-line microsystem teams have barriers preventing them from being consistent and reliable.
Context: Research has found that collaborating with and supporting frontline staff was key to establishing a culture that supports change and a focus on safety. Establishing open communication and effective teamwork with individuals on the frontline leads to shared values within a team and better collaboration which drives performance improvement.
Interventions: For trended …

Improving The Delivery Of Discharge Instructions On The Postpartum Unit By Increasing The Nurses' Knowledge, Judy Anne Settles
Master's Projects and Capstones
Abstract
The field of nursing prides itself on two critical functions: safety and patient education. One of the mechanisms for both education and safety is the discharge process. Improvements in the discharge process have been shown to increase patient comprehension and safety. This study is grounded in the (Barach & Johnson, 2006) healthcare organizational framework called the 5 Ps microsystems assessment to explore the impacts and improvements in the discharge instruction process on a postpartum unit in a large organization. It was found that HCAHPS scores regarding discharge instructions were 55-60%, which is below what is considered satisfactory. Utilizing the …

Improving Internal Communication In An Asia-Pacific International School, Erin Gillespie
Improving Internal Communication In An Asia-Pacific International School, Erin Gillespie
The Dissertation in Practice at Western University
This organizational improvement plan presents a continuous organizational change approach that addresses communication issues between leadership and two culturally distinct departments, the Anglo Western and European, in an established Asia-Pacific international school. Communication is valued in the school’s strategic vision of raising the profile of its European culture. However, communication from leadership to Anglo Western teachers concerning how to support the European department remains an area of inaction throughout the organization. The organizational improvement plan explores internal communication between leadership and teachers by drawing on the theoretical concepts of organizational learning theory and transformational leadership to facilitate change and address …
Quantification Of Obstetric Hemorrhage, Alma Garcia
Quantification Of Obstetric Hemorrhage, Alma Garcia
Student Scholarly Projects
Practice Problem: The practice problem identified involved the inconsistent measurement of blood loss during the postpartum period due to the standard practice of estimating blood loss. Estimates are subjective measures that can have variable results based on interpretation and thus provide minimal meaningful data.
PICOT: The question that guided this project was structured in the following PICOT format. In postpartum women (P), how does the implementation of quantitative blood loss measurements (I), compared to estimated blood loss measurement (C), affect the early identification of severe hemorrhage (O), during the recovery period (T)?
Evidence: Obstetric hemorrhage is a preventable event that …
Understanding Modern Drivers Of The Employee Experience In Healthcare, Antonio Pangallo, Tim Atwell, Kristi Roe, Adrienne Boissy
Understanding Modern Drivers Of The Employee Experience In Healthcare, Antonio Pangallo, Tim Atwell, Kristi Roe, Adrienne Boissy
Patient Experience Journal
Employee engagement has been considered the guiding metric to convey the health, loyalty, and performance of the healthcare workforce. However, the pandemic created new challenges and stimulated deeper conversations around remote work, systemic racism, inclusivity, trust, well-being, and mental illness, which calls into question whether engagement alone is enough. Using an employee experience model deployed in other industries, we identified key drivers of six employee experience (EX) outcomes. We conducted a panel study with close to 5,000 nurses and physicians to identify and prioritize current key drivers specific to the healthcare employee experience. Relative weights analyses suggest that being treated …

The Concrete Ceiling Of Nonprofit Leadership, Leodis William Aaron Turner
The Concrete Ceiling Of Nonprofit Leadership, Leodis William Aaron Turner
Masters Theses
Abstract
This paper draws on a series of four in-depth interviews with African American executives who lead large non-profit organizations in West Michigan to argue that Black men and women in particular, and people of color more generally, experience a concrete ceiling to nonprofit leadership. The analysis is guided by a social innovation framework. In this case, that includes identifying the intervention needed (symptom to cause), designing methods (imagining solutions), developing solutions (prototyping), creating a plan to systemically innovate (recalibrating the nonprofit leadership pipeline for people of color and in particular, Black people), and scaling the plan (organizational growth and …

Reducing The No-Show Rate At A Community Mental Health Organization., Philip E. Pippen
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Relative to other outpatient healthcare specialties, appointment nonattendance (no-shows) is most prevalent in psychiatric settings. Upon meeting with a community-based mental health organization in Louisville, KY (LCMHO), referral no-shows for intake appointments were identified as a significant issue. LCMHO’s intake appointment no-show rate, estimated at 25 – 40%, exceeded nonattendance trends in the literature. The purpose of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project was to develop and implement a referral engagement reminder intervention for improving intake appointment attendance. A systematic approach guided by the Model for Improvement was applied to foster this evidence-supported practice change. The project’s findings included a 16% …

Individuals have been organizing for millennia. The purpose of this study was to investigate what it means for individuals and organizations to each experience how an exposure to the instrumentalized philosophies of one impacts the internalized philosophies of the other. This phenomenological investigation focused on the lived experiences of Organization Development (OD) practitioners with learning and carrying out the philosophy of OD. Individual conversations with six participants during fourteen separate interview sessions were phenomenologically carried out, analyzed, and interpreted. The experiences articulated during these conversations elucidate two concepts not found during the literature review – meaning-mating and hyphenated actualization. These …
Three Essays Examining Organizational Influences On Employee Identity Construction, Esther Lamarre Jean
Three Essays Examining Organizational Influences On Employee Identity Construction, Esther Lamarre Jean
Management Dissertations - Archive
Identity consists of the roles and expectations individuals use to define their self. My dissertation examines the effects of individual perceptions around how identities are constructed in organizations on employee outcomes, decisions, and experiences. In a three-essay format, I develop the construct of identity work supportive organizational support (IWSOP) and a scale to measure it, evaluate how IWSOP relates to affective commitment for employees, and examine whether IWSOP might affect job choice decisions. IWSOP is conceptualized as the degree to which employees perceive that their organization encourages, allows, or provides the opportunity to think about, talk about, or display aspects …
Bridging The Oppurtunity Gap Through Exploring The Perceptions Of Disadvantaged African American Students, Anesha Lashal Carter
Bridging The Oppurtunity Gap Through Exploring The Perceptions Of Disadvantaged African American Students, Anesha Lashal Carter
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to explore student agency’s impact on the lives of successful African American adult students who once identified as being disadvantaged. The opportunity gap, formerly recognized as the achievement gap, continues to negatively affect low socioeconomic status African American students with limited social and cultural capital resources. There are unlimited studies which identify factors that fuel the opportunity gap (Ladson-Billings, 2006). However, many of these studies neglect to incorporate the voices of the stakeholders in which social and economic disparities impact the greatest (Anderson, 2018). This qualitative phenomenological study aims to address this research gap …

Now more than ever it is critical for researchers and decision makers to work together to improve how we manage and preserve the planet's natural resources. Water managers in the western U.S., as in many regions of the world, are facing unprecedented challenges including increasing water demands and diminishing or unpredictable supplies. The transfer of knowledge (KT) and technology (TT) between researchers and entities that manage natural resources can help address these issues. However, numerous barriers impede the advancement of such transfer, particularly between organizations that do not operate in a profit-oriented context and for which best practices for university-industry …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The rapid spread of COVID-19 during the spring of 2020 warranted an unprecedented change as faculty were required to convert course content and quickly learn to use new instructional technology in order to prepare for emergency remote teaching. The purpose of this qualitative case study is to explore how faculty experienced this sudden disruption of learning and rapid transition to emergency remote teaching. How do we assist faculty in continuing to use innovative technology? What resources or support are needed to lessen faculty resistance to change? By applying Kübler-Ross’ Change Curve as an overarching model, the researcher seeks to show …

Media Ideologies And The Politics Of Digital Literacy: Discourses On Technology And Media In A Small School District In The U.S. Heartland, Chris Borntrager
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation uses a discourse studies approach to investigate key communicative processes by which digital technology is given situated meanings within the institution of public education, including at the level of official discourse, administrative texts, and the spoken discourse of professional educators. The discursive processes under analysis, referred to here as “institutional media ideologies,” arguably function as discursive frameworks which, akin to tactics of management in organizations, constrain the further production of discourse in a particular professional domain, including through the codification of contextualization practices, participant roles, and the social meanings of practices implicating the use of digital technology. Furthermore, …

Financial Literacy: A Case Study On Current Practices, Briana Lee Hammontree
Masters Theses
In the last few years, the concern for financial illiteracy among teenagers has only grown as the economy has shifted. Many teenagers feel unprepared and unsecured moving forward with their finances as adults. This issue is intensified further among low-income and marginalized youths who deal with additional hardship in their lives. Accessibility is a huge issue among teenagers and the role of financial literacy of their lives in education is often predetermined by government officials and policies they can only really advocate for change for but cannot vote on. In this research I explore the concept of utilizing social innovation …

Overview Of Transition Care Clinics And Patient No-Shows, Manul Awasthi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Introduction
Transition care clinics (TCCs) have proven to be effective in meeting the time-sensitive needs of patients in the post-discharge period and ensuring smooth transitions of patients from hospital to home. These clinics have led to lower readmissions, lower emergency department visits, cost savings, and lower rates of other adverse events following discharge. However, TCCs, including the East Tennessee State University Family Medicine (ETSU-FM) TCC have been facing high rates of patient no-shows.
Aim
The aim of this dissertation is to identify the different components and outcomes of TCC based on the literature. We further aim to analyze the TCC …

Key Factors In The Strategic Transformation Of Traditional Food Enterprises In China, Hui Ching Lau
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
The food industry is an important industry for China’s social development and one of the pillar industries of China's industrial economy. With the development of China’s urbanization, the victory of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects, and the continuous improvement of people’s living standards, consumer demand has become diversified and rationalized from “seeking for fullness” to “seeking for good”. In this context, the supplier of food products, that is, food companies, has become more competitive in market segments. With the continuous improvement of China's market openness, many top international food companies have flooded into the food industry. Coupled …
An Exploratory Study Using Improvement Science To Better Understand How Modeling The Inverted Pyramid Fosters Servant Leadership Characteristics In A Rural Public School District, Jennifer Anderson
All Dissertations
A rural superintendent is a community figure who is responsible for meeting the needs of students, families, teachers, community stakeholders, and school boards. The superintendent's job is complicated. It has been stated that career superintendency in a single district is extremely rare, and turnover is among the highest in the education field (Chingos et al., 2014). The rural, mid-size public school district in this study was not immune to this problem, with many seasoned leaders on the cusp of retirement. Of the 30 district and school administrators currently employed in the district, including the superintendent, 20 of these leaders are …
Authentic Truth At Work: A Case Study Of The Lived Professional Experiences Of A Transgender Educational Leader Through The Lens Of The Synergistic Leadership Theory, Rachel Bruce
Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
At the time of this study, very little research existed concerning transgender people and educational leadership. The Synergistic Leadership Theory (SLT) was developed by researchers at Sam Houston State University in 1999. While previous researchers found the SLT to be gender-inclusive, the only studies to date had been conducted with cisgender participants. Thus, this study incorporated a non-cisgender subject to examine the professional experiences of an educational leader who is transgender through the lens of the SLT. By utilizing a qualitative descriptive case study, the researcher sought to answer two questions: (a) What are the lived professional experiences of a …
Organizational Culture And Communication Competence Workshop: Masters Plan B, Travis Bergon
Organizational Culture And Communication Competence Workshop: Masters Plan B, Travis Bergon
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
This project began as an attempt to understand how events, such as the “Great Resignation” (i.e., an unprecedented mass exit of employees from the U.S. workforce), have impacted the way in which organizations are attempting to mitigate employee turnover. In addition, this project examined what role managers might play in promoting a positive organizational culture. A review of literature identified Schein’s (1990) model of organizational culture and Spitzberg and Cupach’s (1984) conceptualization of communication competence as useful frameworks for helping managers understand and promote positive organizational culture and employee mental health and well-being. In addition, the review of literature pointed …
