Incentivizing Innovation: Promoting Technical Competency To Win Future Wars., James E. Bevins

Faculty Publications

Despite numerous studies and initiatives, most current Air Force efforts to add science and technology talent have been insufficient. This begs the question: How does the Air Force incentivize and promote the necessary technical competence required to win future competition, conflicts, and wars? Several key initiatives, grounded in behavioral economics, can incentivize innovation and pursue science and technology expertise. Developed in the context of peer adversaries’ actions; global trends in technology, competition, and conflict; and the global competition for science and technology talent, these recommendations have the potential to reform institutional culture and unleash the creativity and talent of the …

Operationalizing Resilience Planning, Theory, And Practice: Insights From U.S. Seaports, Ellis Kalaidjian, Austin Becker, Sandra Pinel

Marine Affairs Faculty Publications

Academics and practitioners advocate climate change resilience planning to guide seaport management, business continuity planning, capital improvements, and so forth. Yet, questions of whether resilience planning interventions influence seaports' planning cultures and result in better prepared organizations remain underexplored. Through 10 cases of U.S. seaport resilience planning, this research explored the benefits and challenges of resilience planning and whether such efforts can enhance the adaptive capacity of a complex, multi-layered system such as a seaport. Results suggested that resilience planning interventions enhanced, inter alia, seaports' social capital with their internal and external stakeholders, and that seaports frequently identified and pursued …

Standards-Aligned Math Curriculum, Student Demographics, And School Improvement: An Investigation Of Illinois’ Lowest-Performing K-8 Schools, Christine Paxson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to provide a greater understanding of the broader characteristics of the lowest performing elementary and middle schools in Illinois, as little analysis of this data had been conducted. Furthermore, little to no research has explored the vertical and horizontal alignment of math curricula and its correlation to achievement scores. The results of the study suggest that the impact of Covid-19 has taken a toll on our K-12 students and teachers, as well as leaders. There is a higher percentage of principal turnover in the last six years, in schools summatively designated comprehensive, that have …

Participatory Evaluation And Needs Assessment Tools For Cooperative Extension In A Virtual Environment, Karen A. Vines

Journal of Extension

The Cooperative Extension organization could be categorized as a participatory organization because of our focus on local needs in driving our work. The pandemic moved a lot of our work to online platforms. This article reflects on use of online tools for program evaluation and needs assessment. Online focus groups were successful in gathering high quality data from a diverse and geographically dispersed population for program evaluation and as part of a needs assessment process. Coupling the focus groups with a modified World Café approach allowed us to go beyond identification of needs to prioritization and development of potential solutions.

A Digital Leadership Lens For A Physical World: Digital Transformation Levers Of Control For Incumbent Companies, Michael J. Seals

Dissertations

A new wave of advanced technologies is disrupting companies of all types and transforming business models within every industry. Long-standing industrial firms that rose to prominence in a pre-digital economy are particularly vulnerable. Prevailing views suggest these companies (hereafter referred to as incumbents) must reimagine their value propositions and transform themselves by leveraging today’s advanced technologies. The opportunities provided by these advanced technologies will significantly affect incumbents whether they participate or not. The pursuit of these opportunities, commonly referred to as digital transformation (DX), is the focus of our research.

Traditional technology-enabled business endeavors creating incremental operational improvements fell within …

This article primarily uses document-based historical methods to reconstruct Stephen Lenton’s LGBTQ advocacy while a student affairs professional at Virginia Commonwealth University from 1970 to 1980. Lenton enjoyed significant career success in his first several years at VCU, establishing popular and successful programs and a strong rapport with students. In 1974, Lenton agreed to advise VCU’s first LGBTQ student organization, even as its members sued the institution for refusing to register their group. After the students won the lawsuit, Lenton became a visible and noted advocate for LGBTQ people and became an openly gay man on campus. Yet as Lenton’s …

A Phenomenological Study Of Administrators' Perceptions Of College Mergers, Abigail Carter Sep 2022

A Phenomenological Study Of Administrators' Perceptions Of College Mergers, Abigail Carter

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to describe the experience of administrators who participated in mergers of technical colleges in a Southern state in the United States. The theory guiding this study was Lewin’s (1997) change theory. Lewin (1997) suggested that the critical factor of an organization’s tone lies in leadership before, during, and after a change. Therefore, the success of any significant organizational transition, such as a merger, relies on the skills of leaders. A central research question and three sub-questions were used to understand the lived experiences that impact administrators during a college merger. A qualitative …

Managing Risk: A Hermeneutic Phenomenology On The Experiences Of Corporate Instructors When Planning And Developing Disaster Driven Training Content, Seeke Diana Hughes

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This phenomenological study aimed to understand and interpret corporate trainers' perspectives when developing disaster or pandemic-driven training content for remote situations and suggest a baseline response to identified deficits. Using the disaster risk management theory by Kim and Sohn (2018), with specific emphasis on Petak's (1985) and McLoughlin's (1985) framework, data from the participants was collected using semi-structured individual interviews, document analysis, and observations. While corporate trainers have used years of experience and seasoned pedagogy to enhance learning for their participants to achieve corporate objectives, almost no content exists regarding the process. Due to increased remote learning resulting from the …

An Evolved Method Of Reporting Retention By Major, Ronnie Fanguy, Ray Giguette, Lori Richard Sep 2022

An Evolved Method Of Reporting Retention By Major, Ronnie Fanguy, Ray Giguette, Lori Richard

Administrative Issues Journal

Higher education institutions face increased pressure from government and external funding sources to retain and graduate their students each year. Nationally, the federal government’s IPEDS report defines the standard measure of an institution’s retention and graduation success. When universities attempt to adapt this institutional standard to individual majors, they must proceed with caution. In this paper, researchers present the problems institutions can expect in directly adapting the IPEDS standard to measure a single academic major’s retention. They also propose an evolved means of reporting a major’s “student retention to graduation.” In doing so, they create a better depiction of the …

Dei In The Legal Profession: Identifying Foundational Factors For Meaningful Change, Robert Razzante, Breanta Boss Sep 2022

Dei In The Legal Profession: Identifying Foundational Factors For Meaningful Change, Robert Razzante, Breanta Boss

Utah Law Review

In this Essay, we offer a critical communication pedagogy as one particular framework for using dialogue “a process of sensitive and thorough inquiry . . . to (de)construct ideologies, identities, and cultures.”70 Such an educational space can serve as an outlet for students to process their cognitive dissonance regarding difference at the intrapersonal level—our fourth factor. Intrapersonal factors, such as cognitive dissonance, if not affirmed and processed, can lead to the continual questioning of one’s place within law school and the legal profession—a continual feeling of imposter syndrome.

The Foundation Review

There is an urgent need for funder investments in the ability of grantee nonprofit organizations to support their staff. Such investments, when done well, can yield significant value for individuals, organizations, and fields of work or movements. Furthermore, the value of these investments can be evaluated and communicated.

This article explores the reasons for and implications of the inadequate response by funders, offers a path forward for designing investments in grantee staff, and documents how funders can capture and communicate the value of these “talent investments.”

Powerful myths serve as barriers to widespread funder investment in grantee staff, and the …
