Rurality And Its Effects On Prenatal Care In Southcentral Kentucky, Kylee Eilers
Rurality And Its Effects On Prenatal Care In Southcentral Kentucky, Kylee Eilers
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Despite ongoing efforts to increase positive healthcare outcomes for prenatal care in rural Kentucky, there continues to be limited access to adequate and quality resources. Research questions for this research project explored the prenatal care resources for Allen, Barren, Butler, Edmonson, Hart, Logan, Metcalfe, Monroe, Simpson, and Warren counties, compared healthcare disparities that exist in those counties with other rural regions of Kentucky, and identified limitations of such prenatal care resources in successfully achieving positive care outcomes. In addition to evaluation of applicable online resources through organizations local to the region, some healthcare professional and representatives were interviewed to find …

How Do Consumers’ Beliefs About Product Price, Taste, And Health Affect Attention To Health-Differentiated Product-Sets?, Henriette Gitungwa, Christopher R. Gustafson
Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications
Objectives: Consumers facemyriad food products in supermarkets, obviating consideration of all options. Consumers are likely to direct scarce attention to products they believe will provide them the best outcome. However, consumers may hold inaccurate beliefs— particularly about health attributes which can lead them to omit items from consideration that they would have optimally considered We examine how consumers’ beliefs about the relative price, taste, and healthiness of food product sets affect the healthiness of the set of products they consider.
Conclusions: Believes about relative differences in nutritional quality of foods importantly influence consideration of products, potentially perpetuating misconceptions about relative …

ABSTRACT Trophic interactions between microbes are postulated to determine whether a host microbiome is healthy or causes predisposition to disease. Two abundant taxa, the Gram-negative heterotrophic bacterium Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron and the methanogenic archaeon Methanobrevibacter smithii, are proposed to have a synergistic metabolic relationship. Both organisms play vital roles in human gut health; B. thetaiotaomicron assists the host by fermenting dietary polysaccharides, whereas M. smithii consumes end-stage fermentation products and is hypothesized to relieve feedback inhibition of upstream microbes such as B. thetaiotaomicron. To study their metabolic interactions, we defined and optimized a coculture system and used software testing …

Framing, Advice-Seeking, And Medical Trust In The R/Keto Community: An Analysis Of The Medical Flair On R/Keto, Sabrina Finke
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
First created in 1921, the ketogenic diet was used as a medical intervention for children suffering from severe epilepsy. However, in recent years, this highly restrictive diet has gained mainstream popularity for a number of illness management, wellness, and weight loss uses. Despite its rise in use and popularity, mainstream medical opinion still views the ketogenic diet as a last resort for severe conditions. Using a content analysis of posts tagged with the “medical” flair on the subreddit “r/Keto,” this thesis found commonalities among posts which praised the ketogenic diet and shared positive personal anecdotes were the most likely to …

Nutritional Considerations In The Care Of Transgender And Gender-Diverse Individuals: Exploring The Knowledge, Attitudes, Beliefs, And Roles Of Registered Dietitian Nutritionists And Nutrition Professionals, Jennifer Madeleine Waters
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Within the past few years, various nutrition-relevant considerations related to the care of transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) individuals have been emphasized. However, the preparedness of registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) to provide nutrition care to this highly marginalized group with unique health concerns is unknown. Available research on the knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs of RDNs as it relates to the care of the TGD community is scarce. It is unknown how frequently transgender-specific health and nutrition topics are being taught to emerging RDNs and nutrition professionals. Further, the potential barriers that nutrition and dietetics educators perceive or face as it relates …

A Survey Of Insects Collected From Wild Flowering Plants At One Site In Michigan, Bryan W. Shields
Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects
The goal of this project was to document the wild flowering plants and the insect diversity present during a one season survey of an unmanaged habitat. Adult insects were collected from June to September 2020. A total of 58 families from 9 orders (Coleoptera, Diptera, Hemiptera, Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera, Mantodea, Neuroptera, Odonata, Orthoptera) of insects were collected or observed. The insects collected were from multiple functional groups including: fungivores, herbivores, nectarivores, pollinavores, and predators. The type and number of insect orders as well as the number of functional groups suggests that insect diversity was attained at the time of this survey. …

Arginine Catabolism And Polyamine Biosynthesis Pathway Disparities Within Francisella Tularensis Subpopulations, Yinshi Yue, Bhanwar Lal Puniya, Tomáš Helikar, Benjamin Girardo, Steven H. Hinrichs, Marilyn A. Larson
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
Francisella tularensis is a highly infectious zoonotic pathogen with as few as 10 organisms causing tularemia, a disease that is fatal if untreated. Although F. tularensis subspecies tularensis (type A) and subspecies holarctica (type B) share over 99.5% average nucleotide identity, notable differences exist in genomic organization and pathogenicity. The type A clade has been further divided into subtypes A.I and A.II, with A.I strains being recognized as some of the most virulent bacterial pathogens known. In this study, we report on major disparities that exist between the F. tularensis subpopulations in arginine catabolism and subsequent polyamine biosynthesis. The genes …

Graphical Abstracts: Creating Appetizing Infographics For Your Research Article, Aleshia A. Huber
Library Scholarship
The graphical abstract is a simple infographic designed to give readers an immediate visual impression of the main findings of a research paper. It aims to make the research more accessible for readers. Thus, it is important to consider design aspects that go into creating a clear and concise graphical abstract. Some journals require a graphical abstract for article publication, while others make it an option. This session is best for attendees who study a particular discipline and come prepared with an abstract, preferably of their own research, but they may also practice creating a graphical abstract with a published …
Reducing Inconsistencies In Our Attitudes Towards Animals, Alicia Bednar
Reducing Inconsistencies In Our Attitudes Towards Animals, Alicia Bednar
Theses & ETDs
Why do we classify some animals as disgusting pests and some as beloved pets? Although many people do not enjoy recognizing it, there are many obvious inconsistencies concerning the way in which we perceive, categorize, and consequently treat animals based on our relationships with them. The same animal might be classified as both a potential pest or pet, depending on the environment and context it is placed in, such as rats and snakes. Others may fall into categories that make them lab subjects or food. The categories we place animals in are automatically mentally associated with varying degrees of moral …
How Universal Is Universal? A Comparative Study Of Refugee Access To Health Care In France And Germany, Rosemary Mejia
How Universal Is Universal? A Comparative Study Of Refugee Access To Health Care In France And Germany, Rosemary Mejia
Theses & ETDs
Annually, millions of asylum seekers leave their countries to seek safety from persecution, violence, and war. It is in the international community's interest for countries to establish methods to provide access to universal health care. This study examines health care access for refugees in France and Germany. Comparative analysis of these two universal health systems confirms that France and Germany are both states that provide asylum seekers and refugees with access to care, with only some limitations. Differences between these two universal health care systems did not significantly contribute to legal access to care for refugees. National policies between the …
Patio Pollinators: Teaching Wildlife Gardening And Appreciation Through A Video Game, Malakai Hall
Patio Pollinators: Teaching Wildlife Gardening And Appreciation Through A Video Game, Malakai Hall
Theses & ETDs
Pollinator populations are in decline globally. Pollinator gardens, even small ones, play a vital role in supporting urban pollinator populations. The beneficial effects of pollinator gardens are increased when the gardens are planted with native species. However, figuring out which species are native to a given area and which ones are best for pollinators takes time and energy that may deter many from starting a garden. Given the teaching power of games, I have created a video game that teaches its players to establish and care for a pollinator garden with flora native to the Sarasota area. The purpose of …

Corals, Cassiopea, And Climate Change: An Assessment Of Cassiopea Xamachana As A Model Organism For Coral-Algal Symbioses, Caroline Link
Theses & ETDs
The driving force between the high biodiversity and productivity of coral reefs is corals’ symbiotic relationship with photosynthetic dinoflagellates within the family Symbiodiniaceae. Recent studies have found that Symbiodiniaceae species differ in their physiological thermotolerances and that symbiont identity is a key determinant of a coral host’s susceptibility and acclimation to increased temperature. However, the specific thermotolerances between species and among species strains remain partially unknown. This is due in part to the difficulty associated with maintaining ex hospite symbionts in culture and sourcing intact coral-algal holobionts with a symbiont that has known physiology when in culture. Cassiopea xamachana jellyfish, …

The Behavioral Response Of White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus Zimmerman 1780) To Scented Bait Stations, Nicholas Warmington
Theses & ETDs
White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are large, herbivorous ungulates which are known to be selective browsers. They can heavily modify the botanical landscape of an area if their population size becomes too large. White-tailed deer populations are growing too fast, and overpopulation is becoming a serious issue across the United States. Deer will heavily browse saplings and herbs, causing issues with forest regeneration and the protection of endangered herbs. Overpopulation of deer has also become a major issue due to the rise of zoonoses and deer vehicle collisions due to development. In the present study, use of scents such as predator …
The Future Of Urban Agriculture: Community Gardening And Controlled Environment Agriculture, Bryton Calder
The Future Of Urban Agriculture: Community Gardening And Controlled Environment Agriculture, Bryton Calder
Theses & ETDs
Urban agriculture is the practice of cultivating and harnessing agriculture within cities, in order to provide for the people who live there. Our urban populations are sustained from the produce of industrial agriculture, grown far from where it is needed most. As urban populations expand many communities are being left behind, deprived of access to healthy and fresh produce. Urban agriculture offers a way to bring food production back to these communities and change urban landscapes into conduits for their own livelihoods. The act of growing and processing food within communities was the foundation of urbanization, and although cities today …

Providing Healthcare Workers In Medically Underserved Areas: A Case Study, Zilola Khashimova
Providing Healthcare Workers In Medically Underserved Areas: A Case Study, Zilola Khashimova
Physician Assistant Studies | Faculty Scholarship
Introduction: Demographic trends forecast an increasing population of aging, chronically ill patents in rural areas of the Southeastern United States. Most healthcare professionals opt to practice in or near urban areas because of higher incomes and nearness to desirable facilities. This leaves a chronic shortage of healthcare providers in rural areas where they are critically needed. A university located in one of the critically underserved areas started a program to train physician assistants with the idea that most of the students would be residents of the area and tend to stay in the area to practice after graduation.
