Impact Of Grazing Management On Productivity Of Tropical Grasslands, Moacyr Corsi, Geraldo B. Martha Jr., Domício Do Nascimento Jr., Marco A. A. Balsalobre

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Beef and dairy cattle enterprises from tropical pasture-based systems are notoriously of low productivity. The low soil fertility, the exploitation of native grasslands, the low genetic potential of the animals and the poor management of soil, pasture and animal components are all arguments used to explain these “low-productivity systems”. In fact, research has consistently indicated up to 50% increase in calving rate when animals grazing unfertilized pastures were supplemented with trace-mineralized salt (Table 1) but unfortunately less than 90% of Brazilian farmers use this management strategy (Tosi, 1997). However, a recent survey conducted by São Paulo State government showed that …

Three Paper Dissertation: Mooc Participation And Experiences Of Women Learners, Kinta Montilus

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Through three distinct investigations, this dissertation provides a unique approach to investigating the engagement of women in MOOCs. According to previous MOOC research, not only 10% of learners who enroll in the course complete it, but the majority of these students appear to be men (Christensen et al., 2013). Women's participation in MOOCs is generally low, but it varies greatly depending on whether the course is STEM or non-STEM (i.e., Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics courses—STEM). The first study examines gender participation patterns in STEM and non-STEM MOOCs using data from existing MOOC platforms. The second research study looked at …

Ataxia-telangiectasia (AT) is a rare autosomal recessive neurodegenerative multisystem disorder. A minority of AT patients can present late-onset atypical presentations due to unknown mechanisms. The demographic, clinical, immunological and genetic data were collected by direct interview and examining the Iranian AT patients with late-onset manifestations. We also conducted a systematic literature review for reported atypical AT patients. We identified three Iranian AT patients (3/249, 1.2% of total registry) with later age at ataxia onset and slower neurologic progression despite elevated alpha-fetoprotein levels, history of respiratory infections, and immunological features of the syndrome. Of note, all patients developed autoimmunity in which …

Applications Of Stretching Technique And Time Window Effects On Ultrasonic Velocity Monitoring In Concrete, Bibo Zhong, Jinying Zhu Jan 2022

Applications Of Stretching Technique And Time Window Effects On Ultrasonic Velocity Monitoring In Concrete, Bibo Zhong, Jinying Zhu

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

Coda wave interferometry (CWI) has been used to measure the relative wave-velocity change (dV/V) caused by small changes in materials. This study uses the stretching processing technique which has been used for CWI analysis to investigate velocity changes of direct longitudinal (P) wave, direct shear (S) wave, and coda wave in concrete by choosing different time windows of ultrasonic signals. It is found that the obtained wave-velocity change depends on the time window position, because the relative contribution of P wave and S wave is different in each signal window. This paper presents three experimental scenarios of velocity …

Health Expectations, Risk Tolerance, And Walking In Peripheral Artery Disease-Related Claudication, Sherene Sharath, Panos Kougias, Neal Barshes

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

We examined the association between health expectations, baseline physical activity, and self-reported symptom severity among patients with claudication: calf pain that occurs during walking and is relieved at rest. Beliefs and attitudes toward exercise influence the behavior. When walking is prescribed as an alternative to surgical intervention with the intention of decreasing symptom severity, as is the case with claudication, it is important to assess patient perceptions, beliefs, and expectations. Through a phone survey, participants described the severity of their symptoms via the Walking Impairment Questionnaire. Data were collected on (1) health expectations and attitudes, assessments of value placed on …

Review On Applications Of Lignin In Pavement Engineering: A Recent Survey, Hui Yao, Yiran Wang, Junfu Liu, Mei Xu, Pengrui Ma, Jie Ji, Zhanping You

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Lignin is the second-largest plant polymer on Earth after cellulose. About 98% of lignin produced in the papermaking and pulping industry is used for combustion heating or power generation. Less than 2% of lignin is used in more valuable fields, mainly in the formulation of dispersants, adhesives, and surfactants. Asphalt is one of the most important materials in pavement engineering. It is a dark brown complex mixture composed of hydrocarbons with different molecular weights and their non-metallic derivatives. Because the chemical structure of lignin is similar to that of asphalt, it is a carbon-based hydrocarbon material. More researchers studied the …

Impact Of Enclosures On Range Productivity In Chepareria West Pokot County Kenya, Regina W. Waiganjo, P. N. Mwangi, Rebecca H. Karanja Jan 2022

Impact Of Enclosures On Range Productivity In Chepareria West Pokot County Kenya, Regina W. Waiganjo, P. N. Mwangi, Rebecca H. Karanja

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

In the semi-arid areas of West Pokot particularly Chepareria, majority of the people live semi sedentary lives while others are nomadic pastoralists. In the last three decades, there have been concerted efforts to restore and improve rangeland in this area. Use of enclosures, which is one of the key interventions, by the Vi Agro- forestry a Non-Governmental Organisation, enhancing with many ecological processes such as disturbance, is a method of rehabilitating degraded rangeland, which in turn affects vegetation dynamics. Adoption of these strategies by farmers has been gradual and some areas are still open and degraded. The aim of this …

Lamb Stocking Rate And Supplementation Effects On Mixed Triticale And Ryegrass Swards Characteristics, R. San Julián, Fabio Montossi, L. Guarino, F. Pittaluga Jan 2022

Lamb Stocking Rate And Supplementation Effects On Mixed Triticale And Ryegrass Swards Characteristics, R. San Julián, Fabio Montossi, L. Guarino, F. Pittaluga

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

An experiment was carried out from 9 June to 22 October 1997, using a Lolium multiflorum L. (ryegrass) and Triticosecale Wittmack (triticale) mixed sward grazed by lambs in a rotational grazing system, to determine the effect of stocking rate (SR; 20, 30 and 40 lambs/ha) and supplementation (S; with or without) on herbage production, composition and nutritive value. SR affected significantly before and after grazing herbage mass and sward height, being higher the values of these variables at the lower SR (3232, 2611 and 2345 kg DM ha-1, P < 0.05; 2557, 1761 and 1612 kg DM ha-1, P < 0.01; 17, 11 and 9 cm, P < 0.01 respectively). Increments in SR had an effect on post grazing sward composition, increasing the proportion of ryegrass (32, 36 and 47 %, P< 0.05) and decreasing triticale contribution (68, 64 and 55 %, P< 0.05) for 20, 30 and 40 lambs/ha. The effect of SR on sward nutritive value was not very clear. Before grazing, S affected significantly herbage mass, being higher the values at the supplemented treatments (2787 vs. 2672 kg DM ha-1, P < 0.10). This experiment showed the high potential of forage production and nutritive value of ryegrass and triticale swards for lamb production in the sandy soil region of Uruguay, and the dominant effect of SR, compared to S, on most of the sward variables considered.

How Does Calcium Impact Cardiac Mitochondria? Jan 2022

How Does Calcium Impact Cardiac Mitochondria?

Thomas Jefferson University Research Magazine

The ability of a cardiac cell to work hard and continuously depends on the energy-producing function of its mitochondria. Calcium is key to proper mitochondrial function—but only in the right amounts. Too much calcium leads to cell death; too little suppresses production of the fuel a cell needs to function.

Research collaborators Shey-Shing Sheu, PhD, professor of medicine, and Gyorgy Csordas, MD, research associate professor of pathology, anatomy and cell biology, are studying the mechanisms by which cardiac mitochondria use calcium and other molecules. And they are shedding light on how dysfunction in those mechanisms contribute to ischemic heart disease, …

Cold-Brew Chemistry Jan 2022

Cold-Brew Chemistry

Thomas Jefferson University Research Magazine

Despite the growing consumption of cold-brew coffee around the world, little is known about the drink’s chemical makeup. Three researchers are helping to fill that gap with new findings on its level of beneficial antioxidants.

A recent study by Niny Rao, PhD, associate professor of chemistry, Megan Fuller, PhD, former assistant professor of chemistry and pre-medical studies student Meghan Grim found that the healthpromoting antioxidants in cold-brew coffee can differ significantly from traditional hot-brew coffee prepared with the same beans, particularly for dark roasts. While similar amounts of antioxidants were observed in hot and cold preparations made from lighter-roast coffee …

Female Relief Systems In U.S. Military Fighter Ejection Seat Aircraft, Marian C. Schultz, James T. Schultz, Joshua J. Schultz

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

In early aircraft, the amount of fuel the aircraft could carry usually determined how long it could stay in flight. Today, with aircraft being able to air refuel, the time they are able to stay aloft is based more on human needs, one being waste management. Voiding urine in a single-seat ejection seat aircraft has been an issue for male pilots in the past, but with the increasing numbers of female pilots in single-seat aircraft, finding a solution has intensified. This paper reviews the various methods that are available for both male and female pilots, including the newest method which …

Exploring The Epigenetics Of Lung Disease Jan 2022

Exploring The Epigenetics Of Lung Disease

Thomas Jefferson University Research Magazine

A recent study by Jesse Roman, MD, Ludwig Kind Professor of Medicine, found that a mother’s diet can prompt changes in how her offspring’s cells function. It offers clear and specific evidence that maternal experience can affect the health of following generations: in this case, that insufficient maternal nutrition during pregnancy can change the functioning of genes that affect lung health.
