Meal Timing, Meal Frequency And Metabolic Syndrome, Fatema Alkhulaifi, Charles Darkoh Apr 2022

Meal Timing, Meal Frequency And Metabolic Syndrome, Fatema Alkhulaifi, Charles Darkoh

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Individuals with metabolic syndrome have increased risk for developing health conditions, including cardiovascular diseases and stroke. Modifiable risk factors, such as exercise and diet, are key components in the prevention and control of metabolic syndrome. Specifically, dietary patterns and habits are extremely successful in controlling more than one of the metabolic syndrome risk factors. Meal timing and frequency have been associated with type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and other chronic conditions. However, there is limited evidence linking metabolic syndrome to meal timing and meal frequency. This review summarizes and discusses how meal timing and frequency impact metabolic outcomes in adults.

Exploring Psychological And Situational Factors That Influence Female College Students' Participation In Oral Sex, Margaret Bergeron Apr 2022

Exploring Psychological And Situational Factors That Influence Female College Students' Participation In Oral Sex, Margaret Bergeron

Dissertations

Although sexually transmitted infections (STI) are not officially reported via the route of transmission, the CDC (2016) reports that individuals who provide fellatio have the highest risk of oral transmission of a STI. Therefore, females who engage in fellatio are at risk for acquiring a STI. The majority of research studies on young adult heterosexual female sexual activities primarily focus on vaginal sex and the associated risks of pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. Limited research exists on the oral sex behaviors of female college students and their understanding of the risk for contracting an STI through fellatio. The purpose of …

Department of Biology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Alpine grasslands are essential for carbon sequestration and food supply for domestic and wild herbivores inhabiting mountainous areas worldwide. These biomes, however, are alternatively threatened by the abandonment of agricultural and livestock practices leading to a fast-growing shrubification process while other mountain grasslands are suffering from the impacts of overgrazing. The functioning of alpine meadow ecosystems is primarily driven by climatic conditions, land-use legacies and grazing. However, although it is critically important, the role of large herbivores on the aboveground biomass and protein content of palatable plants is poorly understood for most alpine meadows. In this work, we explore the …

Major invasions of Indo-Pacific lionfish (Pterois volitans and P. miles) are underway in the Western Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. While the establishment of lionfish in the Western Atlantic is perhaps the most well-studied marine fish invasion to date, the rapidly expanding invasion in the Mediterranean is more recent and has received less attention. Here we review and synthesize successes and failures from two decades of lionfish management in the Western Atlantic to give policy recommendations for their management in the Mediterranean. Two failed approaches that were attempted multiple times in the Western Atlantic and that we advise against …

The Role Of Wolves In Regulating A Chronic Non-Communicable Disease, Osteoarthritis, In Prey Populations, Sarah Hoy, John A. Vucetich, Rolf O. Peterson Apr 2022

The Role Of Wolves In Regulating A Chronic Non-Communicable Disease, Osteoarthritis, In Prey Populations, Sarah Hoy, John A. Vucetich, Rolf O. Peterson

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

It is widely accepted that predators disproportionately prey on individuals that are old, weak, diseased or injured. By selectively removing individuals with diseases, predators may play an important role in regulating the overall health of prey populations. However, that idea is seldom tested empirically. Here we assess the extent that wolves (Canis lupus) select adult moose (Alces alces) in Isle Royale National Park on the basis of age-class and osteoarthritis, a chronic, non-communicable disease. We also assess how temporal variation in kill rates (on moose by wolves) were associated with the subsequent incidence of osteoarthritis in the moose population over …

Tea And Cardiovascular Diseases, Liyan Song, Bernard My Cheung, Marcel Wl Koo, Chu-Pak Lau

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology

Tea, produced from the tea plant Camellia sinensis, has been consumed as a popular beverage world wide for thousands of years. Catechins are the major constituents in tea that contribute to its biological effects. The anti-thrombogenic, anti-inflammatory anti-hypertensive, and protective effects of tea on endothelium have been widely investigated for decades. Although studies have produced inconsistent results of the protective effect of tea on the cardiovascular system, a relationship between tea consumption and inhibition of cardiovascular diseases has been found in both animal and human studies. The mechanisms of action of tea have also been elucidated in cellular and molecular …
