Your Body On Sugar, Jennifer Haltli
Your Body On Sugar, Jennifer Haltli
Children's Book and Media Review
Grab a cookie before you sit down to read, but you may find yourself switching to strawberry as you learn about the natural role of, and misuses of, sugar. Beginning with an exploration of sugar and how it is processed by the body, readers will get a lesson in agriculture regarding how sugar is grown. You also learn that there are natural foods that contain sugar, but added sugars and snack foods contribute to dental and diabetic disorders that accompany the fanatical consumption of sugar in modern diets. In the end, it’s important you remember that you can enjoy sugar …

Implementing A Healthy Recipe Book In A Rural Area To Promote Healthy Lifestyles, Avery Ballinger, Han Pham
ONU Student Research Colloquium
Nutrition and obesity were leading health indicators included in Healthy People 2020¹. In Hardin County, 21.7% of residents live in poverty, ⅓ of residents are considered overweight, and 44% of residents are at risk for high blood pressure². The purpose of this project is to improve health promotion in a group of adults in a rural setting, as these environments have been found to have high rates of obesity and chronic disease risks. This study will evaluate the impact of a comprehensive recipe book on nutrition knowledge, self-efficacy, and willingness to adjust health-related behaviors such as lifestyle changes in diet …

Hubris Of Fmcg Companies Shattered By Saffron Robed Man:A Strategic Management Perspective At Baba Ramdev's Patanjali Ayurved Ltd, Suyash Bhatt, Richa Bhatt
Management Dynamics
This paper corroborates various theoretical principles of strategic management to the actual approach used by PatanjaliAyurvedLtd. (PAL). We would like to examine reasons success of PatanjaliAyurvedLtd. (PAL). We propose a model called 5 C - Model (credence, culture, consistency, contentment and cost) to understand the PatanjaliAyurved's success. There is little or no innovation in this market over last few decades which is why companies like Colgate have dominated the oral healthcare segment, HUL and P&G have dominated the homecare segment, Nestle has dominated the instant food segment for decades put together. These companies have had a long learning curve and have …
Intermittent Fasting As Adjuvant To Topical Therapy In The Management Of Mild To Moderate Psoriasis, Grace Queiroz
Intermittent Fasting As Adjuvant To Topical Therapy In The Management Of Mild To Moderate Psoriasis, Grace Queiroz
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Psoriasis is a common chronic inflammatory skin condition with no known cure. Intermittent fasting involves limiting caloric intake to designated time periods and decreases markers of systemic inflammation, but the clinical efficacy of intermittent fasting for patients with psoriasis remains unclear. We propose a randomized controlled clinical trial to investigate the clinical impact of adjunctive intermittent fasting on plaque psoriasis. Patients with mild to moderate plaque psoriasis will be managed with topical calcipotriene/betamethasone dipropionate cream and randomized to either practice daily intermittent fasting with an 8-hour eating window or practice a diet without time restriction. We hypothesize that patients engaging …
Let's Hit The Gym: An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Student Exercise, Achievement, And Social Anxiety, Angela Lebel
Let's Hit The Gym: An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Student Exercise, Achievement, And Social Anxiety, Angela Lebel
Honors Projects in Applied Psychology
An emerging body of literature has documented the positive influence of exercise on student achievement. Human and non-human animal studies have proven that exercise can improve memory, academic stressors, social anxiety, and sleep along with more broad topics such as mental and physical health. With exercise improving memory and academic stressors, this leads to a potential conclusion that exercise could benefit student’s grade point average which will be tested in this study. Exercise is also exhibited to help reduce social anxiety which leads to a potential conclusion that exercise could improve one’s involvement in extracurricular activities because one would have …

Employee Health and Wellness Programs are increasingly more prevalent in different work environments and industries. Studies have shown that these programs can potentially increase employee productivity and reduce absenteeism, in addition to emphasizing a priority on mental and physical wellness. Healthcare workers already have a stressful job, but since the breakout of COVID-19, they have been overwhelmed with this pandemic to an even higher degree. It is important that healthcare workers take care of their own health and wellness and that it is prioritized at their place of work. Through surveying various healthcare workers, this study investigates if healthcare professionals …

ood waste continues to develop as a global issue, especially within the United States. According to 2020 data collected from the Economic Research Service of the United States Department of Agriculture, 10.5% of all households in the U.S. face food insecurity. Using grocery supply chains as a context, this study examines how food banks serve as sustainable resources for the distribution of recovered food to feed food insecure communities. Grocery stores, retailers, and other organizations acknowledge waste through the implementation of sustainable initiatives. Food banks and partnering agencies serve as an integral component of waste reduction. The primary data collection …

Running Head: Ses, Food Literacy And Security, And Eating Disorders, Kendra Rigney
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Eating disorders have one of the highest mortality rates among all mental health conditions in terms of suicide rate and overall mortality rate, with college students reporting higher rates than the general population (Arcelus et al., 2011; Badrasawi & Zidan, 2019; Eisenberg et al., 2013; Perryman et al., 2018). The current literature has shown a relationship between binge-eating and bulimia symptoms and socioeconomic status, food literacy, and food security (Becker et al., 2017; Darling et al., 2017; Ferreira et al., 2021; Knesebeck et al., 2012; Rogers et al., 1997). The goal of the current study was to examine how perceived …

Preventing Idaho's Deadliest Disease: Policy Proposals To Prevent Heart Disease, Levi Smith
2022 Undergraduate Research Showcase
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both the nation and the state of Idaho. Nearly half of all Americans have at least one risk factor for heart disease, including high blood pressure, high LDL cholesterol, or a habit of smoking. In this research project, a number of policy proposals are analyzed as potential legislative actions the Idaho State Legislature should take to prevent heart disease. These proposals stem from previous legislative actions taken or proposed by other states in the U.S., policy recommendations from governmental agencies and departments, as well as policy recommendations from health-related non-governmental organizations. …

Review: The Effects Of Parental Phthalate Exposure On Newborn Defects, Tram Ha Pham Bich, Jonathon Reeck
2022 Undergraduate Research Showcase
Phthalates, or phthalate esters, are employed in the making of numerous products around the world, such as food containers, children’s toys, detergents, surfactants, household items, and even pharmaceutical tablets. With the flexibility, elasticity, and inexpensive price, companies started using phthalates without doubting their acute and chronic toxicity. Recent research suggests that phthalate esters are possible causes of asthma, obesity, type II diabetes, neurodevelopmental issues, heart diseases, cancer, and especially reproductive system issues. However, studies about the effects of phthalates on fetal development are rare. To summarize updated data on this field, this review poster covers the most prominent in vivo …
The Effects Of Increasing Ocean Temperatures On The Survivorship Of A Subtropical Population Of The Sea Urchin Arbacia Punctulata, Rhianna Clemons
The Effects Of Increasing Ocean Temperatures On The Survivorship Of A Subtropical Population Of The Sea Urchin Arbacia Punctulata, Rhianna Clemons
Undergraduate Theses
Most sea urchin species have critical ecological roles in their ecosystems, such as keystone grazers. There is an increasing need to understand the impacts of rising temperatures on species that are vital to the health of their environments. Studies have shown that increasing temperatures may significantly negatively affect several important biological processes including reproduction, development, and excretion in many species including sea urchins. However, very little is known about the sea urchin species Arbacia punctulata. In this study, individuals were exposed to 21˚C (control, n = 12) and 27˚C (experimental, n = 12) for seven days, and survivorship was …

Alternating Pressure Overlay Systems, Maris Rathgeb
Alternating Pressure Overlay Systems, Maris Rathgeb
MSN Capstone Projects
Although preventable, pressure injuries are an overwhelming problem in the healthcare system and can lead to poor quality of life, increased length of hospitalization, and unsatisfactory patient outcomes. Many cardiac surgeries take anywhere from six to twelve hours, and patients are completely immobilized for the entire length of time. Alternating pressure overlays placed on the operating room table provide tissue offloading with inflating and deflating nodes, leading to micro-movements on high pressure bony prominences. The intervention PICO question to be answered in this paper is: In intraoperative patients (P), how does the use of an alternating pressure surface (I) compared …

Literature Review On Outer Hair Cell Regeneration And Potential Hearing Restoration, Serena Karlov
Literature Review On Outer Hair Cell Regeneration And Potential Hearing Restoration, Serena Karlov
Honors Theses
The cochlea is the portion of the inner ear responsible for hearing, containing both the organ of Corti and auditory hair cells. Sound wave vibrations mechanically bend the stereocilia on the three rows of outer hair cells and one row of inner hair cells. These hair cells transduce this mechanical energy into electrical impulses that are relayed from the auditory nerve to the brain, where sounds are processed. In this review I provide an overview of inner ear anatomy, ear physiology, and auditory transduction. I then move on to specifically focus on the importance of outer hair cells, their regeneration, …

Comparing Behavioral Activation With And Without A Values Component: A Systematic Review, Natalie Komoll
Honors Theses
Major depressive disorder is one of the most prevalent psychological disorders within the global population and has been for many years. Over the years, numerous interventions have been developed to treat major depressive disorder, including cognitive-behavioral therapy. One form of cognitive-behavioral therapy for depression, known as behavioral activation, focuses on increasing contact with pleasant activities that are reinforcing. Many modifications of behavioral activation have been made over the years, including the version Martell and colleagues (2010) created which modified the traditional approach by decreasing the number of sessions. This new approach, known as brief behavioral activation, also asks clients to …

Intermittent Standing And Prior Exercise As Strategies To Prevent Arterial Stiffening That Can Arise From Prolonged Sitting, Alexander Wright
Intermittent Standing And Prior Exercise As Strategies To Prevent Arterial Stiffening That Can Arise From Prolonged Sitting, Alexander Wright
Master's Theses
Prolonged sitting can cause adverse vascular responses, including elevations in aortic stiffness which might contribute to cardiovascular disease (CVD). Few studies have investigated the impact of intermittent standing and/or prior exercise as strategies to mitigate these deleterious vascular changes. Purpose: to explore vascular health responses to prolonged sitting, with and without intermittent standing and/or prior exercise. Methods: 15 males aged between 18 and 31 years were recruited. Participants completed a control condition (Sitting Only), and three randomized strategy conditions (Sitting Plus Standing, Exercise Plus Sitting, Exercise Plus Sitting Plus Standing). For all conditions, measurements of carotid-femoral PWV (cfPWV) were taken …
