Design Of An Implanted Vascular Access Device With A Mechanical Septum, Mallory Ann Moffett, Katherine Rose O'Quinn
Honors Theses
As populations continue to age, their need for medical care continues to rise. This is seen by the large need for implanted vascular devices (IVADs). IVADs are essential for individuals with poor venous access and patients requiring long-term venous delivered drugs. This document will explore the existing IVADs, where they fall short, and where our device, the IrisPort system, works to solve the unmet needs of patients. The IrisPort system is a needle-less port system that allows for repeated venous access without the use of a non-coring needle. Prior art searches have shown that the IrisPort is a novel solution …

Purpose/Background Chronic hepatitis C is currently the most common cause of liver disease in the United States and is associated with various complications that increase mortality and morbidity, yet many people go unidentified and thus untreated. The CDC created guidelines in 2012 for hepatitis C screening and testing among the baby boomer population due to their high rates of HCV infection and HCV-related mortality. Our project aimed to assess the adherence of hepatitis C screening, based on these CDC guidelines, of individuals within the baby boomer population (1945-1965) in the primary care setting through retrospective chart review.

The Effects Of Clothing Size On Self-Esteem Regarding Gender, Cailin Mahoney
The Effects Of Clothing Size On Self-Esteem Regarding Gender, Cailin Mahoney
Perspectives
Recently there has been a sufficient amount of literature regarding how clothing size affects the self-esteem of each gender in a variety of ways. The purpose of this literature review is to explore how standard clothing sizes affect the self-esteem of each gender, men and women, differently. The findings suggest a Eurocentric ideal that women are held to more of a thin ideal, while men are held to more of a muscular ideal. Additionally, when both women and men did not meet their expected ideals, it caused their self-esteem to become diminished. Overall, women cared more about the clothing size …

Climate change is the primary threat facing coral reef ecosystems. How marginal reef systems responded to past climatic variability provides clues to their prospects for persisting through contemporary climate change. Reefs along the Pacific coast of Panamá are dominated by branching corals of the genus Pocillopora. These reefs experience a natural gradient of nutrients, pH, and temperature because of stronger seasonal upwelling in the Gulf of Panamá (GoP) than in the Gulf of Chiriquí (GoC). The shallow reefs within both of the gulfs of Panamá They are also strongly affected by climatic variability due to the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). …

It explains the relevance of the appreciation of the African cultural heritage to the restoration of the human dignity of the African, especially the migrants, and the recognition of the obligation of the human beings to protect the integrity of all creation. It shows the connection between the root causes of the environmental crisis and migration. These interconnected root causes need a holistic understanding of creation that Ubuntu ethics provides mainly in …
Cle Working Paper No. 2/2022--Mexican Salsa And Mexican Farm Workers: How International Agricultural Development Marginalizes Farm Labour, Celia White
Centre for Law and the Environment
International food systems have become ever-more complex through systems of globalization, industrialization and technologization, and have been significantly influenced by, and entrenched in concepts of international development. One small meal can have countless intersections with international laws, domestic laws, environments and people. A simple salsa recipe, for example, containing merely tomatoes, lime juice, garlic, onions, and cilantro, contains in its history a complex story of power, privilege, poverty and possibility. Where did these ingredients come from? Who grew them? Where are those people from? What rights do they have? Innumerable personal stories are hidden within the seemingly innocuous act of …

Land Degradation In Rural Tanzania, Seth Ririe
Land Degradation In Rural Tanzania, Seth Ririe
Ballard Brief
Land degradation is the primary environmental issue for the Eastern African country of Tanzania. Due to its effect on crop production, land degradation primarily affects farmers living in rural parts of the country. Unsustainable farming techniques, deforestation, and rainfall variation are the main drivers of land degradation. Victims of land degradation tend to struggle from increased undernutrition, decreased economic well-being, and regular environmental migration. Implementing the principles of conservation agriculture are essential to increasing crop yields and decreasing poverty and undernutrition in Tanzania.

Communication (PhD) Dissertations
Given the prevalence of health misinformation (i.e., inaccurate health messaging that lacks scientific evidence), there is a need for successful communication strategies to combat this detrimental health issue (Krishna & Thompson, 2021). Guided by goals-plans-action theory (Dillard, 1990), which explains the communicative process of creating and implementing influence messages, the purpose of this dissertation was to: (a) uncover primary care physician goals, plans, and action when correcting patient-held health misinformation and (b) experimentally test corrective influence messages for their effectiveness from the patient’s perspective. Two studies addressed these two purposes. In Study One, results of surveys of primary care physicians …
