Association Between Antidepressant Use And Ed Or Hospital Visits In Outpatients With Sars-Cov-2, Bradley A Fritz, Nicolas Hoertel, Eric J Lenze, Farid Jalali, Angela M Reiersen

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Antidepressants have previously been associated with better outcomes in patients hospitalized with COVID-19, but their effect on clinical deterioration among ambulatory patients has not been fully explored. The objective of this study was to assess whether antidepressant exposure was associated with reduced emergency department (ED) or hospital visits among ambulatory patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. This retrospective cohort study included adult patients (N = 25 034) with a positive SARS-CoV-2 test performed in a non-hospital setting. Logistic regression analyses tested associations between home use of antidepressant medications and a composite outcome of ED visitation or hospital admission within 30 days. Secondary …

Metabolomics Profiling Of Vitamin D Status In Relation To Dyslipidemia, Hanaa Mousa, Mohamed A. Elrayess, Ilhame Diboun, Simon K. Jackson, Susu M. Zughaier

School of Biomedical Sciences

Vitamin D deficiency is a global disorder associated with several chronic illnesses including dyslipidemia and metabolic syndrome. The impact of this association with both dyslipidemia and vitamin D deficiency on metabolomics profile is not yet fully understood. This study analyses the metabolomics and lipidomic signatures in relation to vitamin D status and dyslipidemia. Metabolomics data were collected from Qatar Biobank database and categorized into four groups based on vitamin D and dyslipidemia status. Metabolomics multivariate analysis was performed using the orthogonal partial least square discriminate analysis (OPLS-DA) whilst linear models were used to assess the per-metabolite association with each of …

An Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis Of Displacement From Single Room Occupancy (Sro) Housing, Camilla Cummings Aug 2022

An Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis Of Displacement From Single Room Occupancy (Sro) Housing, Camilla Cummings

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Single Room Occupancy (SRO) housing is typically the most affordable and attainable form of housing for low-income people and is often located in desirable areas with access to social infrastructure. Literature shows SRO tenants are marginalized related to their social positionalities (i.e., they are disproportionately Black, elderly, more likely to have mental illness, and be in recovery from substance or alcohol use). Unfortunately, SRO housing has been increasingly lost to for-profit developers. The current study employed a community-based participatory action research approach and qualitative design to explore the subjective experiences of SRO residents’ displacement. An Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis approach was …

The Discovery Of Data-Driven Temporal Dietary Patterns And A Validation Of Their Description Using Energy And Time Cut-Offs, Luotao Lin, Jiaqi Guo, Yitao Li, Saul Gelfand, Edward Delp, Anindya Bhadra, Elizabeth Richards, Erin Hennessy, Heather A. Eicher-Miller

School of Nursing Faculty Publications

Objectives

Data-driven methods were recently applied to create temporal dietary patterns (TDPs) incorporating timing and amount of energy intake over 24-hours; their relationships to obesity were determined. However, description of the data-driven TDPs using energy and time cut-offs were not validated against obesity. Aims were to (1) create data-driven TDPs, describe pattern characteristics using energy and time cut-offs, and determine relationships to BMI and waist circumference (WC); (2) assess the concurrent validity of TDPs derived using the cut-offs by determining relationships with BMI and WC. Methods

Amount and timing of energy intake from the first day 24-hour dietary recall of …

Examining Psychosocial Interventions For Refugees From Asia: A Meta-Analysis And Systematic Review On Efficacy, Effectiveness, And Cultural Tailoring, Mengxue (Fiona) Sun

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Background: Internally displaced persons (IDPs), refugees, and asylum seekers who have experienced forced migration are at a disproportionate disadvantage of experiencing distress and developing mental health problems. Research on psychosocial interventions for refugees indicated positive findings on symptom improvement in depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, and anxiety. However, previous meta-analyses and systematic reviews have primarily focused on randomized control trials (RCTs) to the exclusion of a large body of intervention research. In addition, many previous reviews have included studies that targeted at specific treatment types (e.g., cognitive behavioral therapy, narrative review therapy) or specific mental diagnoses (e.g., major depressive disorder, posttraumatic …

The Unintended Effects Of Tamper-Evident Food Closures, Marissa Orlowski, Sarah Lefebvre, Laura Boman Aug 2022

The Unintended Effects Of Tamper-Evident Food Closures, Marissa Orlowski, Sarah Lefebvre, Laura Boman

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

Restaurant-to-consumer food delivery has experienced disruption with the growth of third-party services such as DoorDash and Uber Eats. However, this platform-to-consumer delivery method introduces increased opportunities for food tampering and contamination due to additional touchpoints in the delivery process. To mitigate these concerns, more restaurants are implementing tamper-evident closures such as seals attached to the food containers used for delivery items. Drawing on signaling theory, we examine the effect of tamper-evident closures in the third-party delivery context through two experimental studies and a focus group. Our results revealed a negative effect of tamper-evident seals on willingness to pay through lowered …

The Social Murder Of Victoria Salazar: Neoliberal Capitalism And Working Class Precariousness In El Salvador, Steven Osuna

Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis

On March 27, 2021, a Salvadoran refugee named Victoria Salazar was brutally killed by police in the Mexican resort town of Tulum, Quintana Roo. In this article, I introduce a “proletarian feminist analysis” to the study of Central American displacement and forced migration to argue that Victoria Salazar’s death is a “social murder.” Although Mexican police murdered Victoria Salazar, I contend that the social degradation and working-class precariousness in El Salvador and Mexico, all shaped by neoliberal capitalist relations of exploitation and afflicting cisgender and trans women in distinctive ways, set the conditions for Ms Salazar’s social murder.

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

Hurricane Maria, a category 4 hurricane, passed through Puerto Rico on September 20, 2017, leaving the island devastated. Maria directly affected the availability of nutritional food for survivors, creating an experience of food insecurity among Puerto Ricans. Using the US Adult Food Security Survey Module (Spanish Version) from the United States Department of Agriculture, Puerto Rican adult households without children (old) were assessed nine months after the hurricane with the aim of identifying specific groups of households that were food insecure and the psychological effects associated with food insecurity. Forty-six of the 85 households assessed were identified as food insecure, …

Obesity As A Risk Factor For Covid-19, Gabriela Hermes, Mir Saleem

Mako: NSU Undergraduate Student Journal

The coronavirus pandemic has presented a wide range of challenges for healthcare systems in the world. COVID-19 has infected millions of people, with approximately 90% of the population showing mild or no symptoms. The disease has some risk factors that increase its severity, such as obesity, age, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, suppressed immune system, and pulmonary disorders. Obese individuals have higher chances of having symptomatic COVID-19 infection with excessive rates of hospitalization and ICU admission. Understanding the mechanisms defining the link between COVID-19 and obesity is necessary to develop preventive measures and therapeutic interventions for people with obesity. Patients with obesity …

Lower ambient temperature (Ta) requires greater energy expenditure to sustain body temperature. However, effects of Ta on human energetics may be buffered by environmental modification and behavioral compensation. We used the IAEA DLW database for adults in the USA (n = 3213) to determine the effect of Ta (−10 to +30°C) on TEE, basal (BEE) and activity energy expenditure (AEE) and physical activity level (PAL). There were no significant relationships (p > 0.05) between maximum, minimum and average Ta and TEE, BEE, AEE and PAL. After adjustment for fat-free mass, fat mass and age, statistically significant (p < 0.01) relationships between TEE, BEE and Ta emerged in females but the effect sizes were not biologically meaningful. Temperatures inside buildings are regulated at 18–25°C independent of latitude. Hence, adults in the US modify their environments to keep TEE constant across a wide range of external ambient temperatures.

Limited studies have focused on maternal early-life risk factors and the later development of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). We aimed to estimate the GDM prevalence and examine the associations of maternal early-life risk factors, namely: maternal birthweight, parental smoking at birth, childhood urbanicity, ever-breastfed, parental education attainment, parental history of diabetes, childhood overall health, childhood body size, and childhood height, with later GDM. This was a retrospective cross-sectional study using the UAE Healthy Future Study (UAEHFS) baseline data (February 2016 to April 2022) on 702 ever-married women aged 18 to 67 years. We fitted a Poisson regression to estimate the …

Corticotomy Assisted Lower Molar Protraction Treatment For A Periodontally Compromised Patient – A Case Report, Cheng-Hsun Shih, Ming-Chu Huang, Yuen-Yung Tsang

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

This is a case of a 51 years old female with skeletal Class I malocclusion, suffered from root fracture of #46 & moderate generalized periodontitis. She asked for molar protraction of #47 #48 to close the extraction space of #46 without any prosthesis or dramatic change of profile. Treatment planning was removal of #46 & protraction of #47 #48 with mini screw. It became difficult to close the residual space of #46 after 17 months of treatment due to narrow edentulous ridge. Therefore corticotomy plus bone grafting was performed. After treatment, her occlusion was stable and profile was satisfied. Selective …

The envelope protein (E) is a fusion class II protein that is essential for DENV fusion. We use two active compounds derived from commonly used plants in Indonesia: galangin and kaempferide. We ran a docking and 1000 ps molecular dynamic analysis with normal physiological parameters. During the simulation, galangin and kaempferide binding sites fluctuated. But chloroquine has lesser ligand mobility, hence keeping contact with fusion loops, whereas both drugs lose contact with hydrophobic pockets. However, the two active compounds have a more stable ligand configuration. Less than 2 Å alterations were seen in the RMSF simulation of the protein E …
