Background: Hip-worn accelerometer cut-points have poor validity for assessing children's sedentary time, which may partly explain the equivocal health associations shown in prior research. Improved processing/classification methods for these monitors would enrich the evidence base and inform the development of more effective public health guidelines. The present study aimed to develop and evaluate a novel computational method (CHAP-child) for classifying sedentary time from hip-worn accelerometer data.
Methods: Participants were 278, 8-11-year-olds recruited from nine primary schools in Melbourne, Australia with differing socioeconomic status. Participants concurrently wore a thigh-worn activPAL (ground truth) and hip-worn ActiGraph (test measure) during up to 4 …

Background: A better understanding of the extent to which psychosocial and environmental correlates of physical activity are specific to locations would inform intervention optimization.
Purpose: To investigate cross-sectional associations of location-general and location-specific variables with physical activity and sedentary time in three common locations adolescents spend time.
Methods: Adolescents (N = 472,Mage = 14.1,SD = 1.5) wore an accelerometer and global positioning systems (GPS) tracker and self-reported on psychosocial (e.g., self-efficacy) and environmental (e.g., equipment) factors relevant to physical activity and sedentary time. We categorized each survey item based on whether it was specific to a location to generate psychosocial …

The complex life cycle of Myxococcus xanthus makes it a model organism for studying multicellular developmental processes in bacteria. In response to environmental changes, M. xanthus cells collectively and dramatically adjust their morphology, physiological functions, and biosynthesis. Particularly, M. xanthus copes with starvation by producing fruiting bodies filled with dormant and stress-resistant spores. During secondary metabolism, it synthesizes polyketide (PK) and non-ribosomal peptide (NRP) natural products that are crucial sources of antibiotics. Bacteria including M. xanthus, require the alternative σ54 regulatory system to initiate the transcription of necessary genes for settling stress and completing developmental process. This dissertation introduces in …

Indonesian Journal of Medical Chemistry and Bioinformatics
Hair loss is commonly found in menopausal women. Hair loss is one of the consequences of hormonal dynamics when a woman stops having menstrual cycle, which affect calcium and vitamin D level in the body. Although it is clear enough that hormonal adjustment is required, older people and another sociodemographic factor prefer herbal-based therapeutic rather than synthetic-based due to tradition and positive experience factors. This study is an in-silico study which aims to point out the possible ligand candidates that can work as Vitamin D Receptor (VDR) agonists. We perform molecular docking using Autodock version 4.2 with the criteria of …

Extrinsic Motivation To Use Mhealth Interventions In Maternal Healthcare In Rural Malawi, Priscilla Maliwichi, Wallace Chigona, Address Malata
African Conference on Information Systems and Technology
mHealth interventions have the potential to address the inequalities in accessing health information. In maternal healthcare, mHealth interventions provide information to pregnant women on how they can stay healthy during pregnancy, as well as on the danger signs in pregnancy that can contribute to maternal mortality. In this study we posit that extrinsic motivation could promote trialability of mHealth interventions. We employed qualitative research methods to investigate extrinsic factors that motivate maternal healthcare clients in rural Malawi to use mHealth interventions. Self-determination theory was used as the theoretical lens for the study. Data was collected using secondary data sources and …

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
Purpose: Child and caregiver sleep occurs in a family system, with socioeconomically disadvantaged families experiencing disproportionately worse sleep health than more advantaged families. The extent to which objectively measured sleep health metrics (i.e., sleep duration, midpoint, regularity, efficiency) are concordant within disadvantaged family systems, including caregiver-child dyads, is not clear. To address this gap, this study aimed to: (1) characterize sleep health metrics and (2) identify levels of sleep health concordance among caregiver-child dyads living in families experiencing socioeconomic disadvantage.
Design and methods: We enrolled 20 caregivers and 26 children in this micro-longitudinal study. Eligible primary caregivers slept in …

Continuous Glucose Monitoring Metrics For Earlier Identification Of Pre-Diabetes: Protocol For A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Sara Gottfried, Laura Pontiggia, Andrew B. Newberg, Gregory Laynor, Daniel A. Monti
Institute of Emerging Health Professions Faculty Papers
Introduction: Glycaemic variability and other metrics are not well characterised in subjects without diabetes. More comprehensive sampling as obtained with continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) may improve diagnostic accuracy of the transition from health to pre-diabetes. Our goal is to investigate the glycaemic system as it shifts from health to pre-disease in adult patients without diabetes using CGM metrics. New insights may offer therapeutic promise for reversing dysglycaemia more successfully with dietary, nutritional and lifestyle change before progression occurs to pre-diabetes and diabetes.
Methods and analysis: This systematic review will include comprehensive searches of the PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library and ClinicalTrials.gov …

Biophilic Architecture Used To Improve Patient Outcomes And Recovery In Behavioral Health Centers, Heidy M. Valdez
Theses
Humans naturally seek adventure and the outdoors. Currently, US institutions that care for people with chronic illnesses, severe injuries, and mental health conditions often exist in neutral spaces with little to no natural elements. Because this does not promote patient happiness, patient recovery time tends to be longer. These institutions are usually not pleasant for patients or their relatives and are seen as negative spaces by the public, which should not be the case. Typical design elements include windows with thick daylight-blocking mullions to ensure no patient tries to hurt themselves, small and dark rooms, white walls, and no private …

Health Related Challenges Of Rural Elderly Living In Co-Residential Family Care Arrangements, Kidus Yenealem Mefteh
The Qualitative Report
Family plays an indispensable role in the care and support of the rising number of older people particularly in developing countries like Ethiopia where the system of public transfer is minimal. Previous studies in Ethiopia focus on institutionalized and urban-dwelling elderly with little attention to the elderly in the informal care paradigm and rural areas. This study aims to explore the health-related experiences of dependent rural elderly who get care and support within a family setting. A phenomenology method was used, and in-depth interviews were employed to collect data from purposively sampled elders. Data were inductively coded and developed into …

Physical activity (PA) has many benefits; however, groups facing barriers to health-promoting behaviors are less likely to be physically active. This may be addressed through workplace interventions. The current study employs objective (accelerometry) and perceived (International Physical Activity Questionnaire [IPAQ]) measures of PA among a subset of participants from the "Working for You" study, which tests a multi-level (work group and individual) workplace intervention targeted at workers with low-incomes. Linear mixed and hierarchical logistic regression models are used to determine the intervention's impact on moderate- to vigorous-PA (MVPA) and achieving the PA Guideline for Americans (≥150 minutes MVPA/week), respectively from …

Women And Land Snails Consumption In The Southwest Region Of Cameroon, Forka Leypey Mathew Fomine
Women And Land Snails Consumption In The Southwest Region Of Cameroon, Forka Leypey Mathew Fomine
Journal of International Women's Studies
Both marine and terrestrial species of snails are consumed in most countries worldwide, including Southwest Cameroon where it is an age-old practice among various ethnic groups. Before the introduction of snail farming in the Southwest Region of Cameroon in the 1990s, all the residents who ate snails acquired them through gathering.
There is significant internal variation in the history of land snail consumption among four ethnic groups: the Banyang, Mbo, Balung, and Bakweri. The long history of land snail consumption among the Banyang and Mbo can be attributed to their geographical proximity to the eastern region of Nigeria, where the …

Advancing Livelihoods And Transformation Of Rural Women: The Role Of Critical Pedagogy In Bridging Gender Gap In South Africa, Sampson Tawiah, Itumeleng Setlhodi
Journal of International Women's Studies
The essence of advancing livelihoods is to heighten socio-economic transformation among the poor, especially rural women through education. The statement above suggests that locating these women as critical stakeholders and affording them opportunities to improve their skills and knowledge can advance values significantly. In the country in general, rural women generate less income as compared to men. Hence, educational practices geared toward women are to address this gap. Transformation, however, does not come cheap. It takes consented effort on educators, learners, and society to embrace educational provisions, programs, and new teaching methods for a sustainable change, especially for rural women. …

Journal of International Women's Studies
Despite increasing socioeconomic development in Indonesia the issue of child marriages remains prevalent among teenage females. To date, there have not been any nationally representative studies examining child marriage determinants via multivariate regression modeling in Indonesia. The following study used data from the 2019 Indonesian Population and Health Survey and the Teenage Reproductive Health Survey to estimate the determinants of child marriage and marital expectations. Multivariate simulations were carried out in order to approximate the association between demographic and socioeconomic characteristics and the following early marriage outcomes: 1) often married or cohabited, 2) married or cohabited before 19 years, 3) …
