Improving Access To Community Health Resources, Raheem D. Mohamed Oct 2022

Improving Access To Community Health Resources, Raheem D. Mohamed

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

My capstone project included a collaborative effort between myself, community members, and local organizations to improve the accessibility of community health resources and health outcomes of community members. My approach included creating an accessible website in different languages to hold up-to-date community health resources and essential details regarding access. These resources can fall into the social determinants of health categories such as economic stability, education access, health care access, neighborhood and built environment social, and community context. This project was important in helping to prevent poor health outcomes, such as community members getting diagnosed with preventative chronic diseases, which can …

Childcare Center Communication, Nicholas A. Meyerhoeffer

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

For my capstone project, I worked with the College of Southern Idaho Early Learning Center to identify their teacher and parent communication needs and then researched and reviewed communication platforms to implement a new application that allows parents and the daycare to chart the progress of their children. And it allows parents to stay in contact with their children’s caregivers/teachers throughout the day. This helps parents be able to know what their children are doing while they are at work or school. I was also able to volunteer and help at the daycare in order to identify their needs regarding …

The Biogeochemical Legacy Of The Landscape Of Fear: Pumas, Vicuñas, And Nutrient Cycling In The High Andes, Julia Dina Monk Oct 2022

The Biogeochemical Legacy Of The Landscape Of Fear: Pumas, Vicuñas, And Nutrient Cycling In The High Andes, Julia Dina Monk

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Research on biogeochemical cycles has historically focused on plant and microbial activity; however, growing evidence suggests that animals play an important role in nutrient cycling. Predators may be especially important drivers of these ecosystem processes, as they influence the quantity, quality, and distribution of organic matter through their control of herbivore prey. The role of predators and their herbivore prey in cycling and transporting nutrients may be particularly important in arid ecosystems, where productivity is low and resources are scarce and spatially clustered. In these landscapes with high heterogeneity of resources and risk, large herbivores may transport and hasten the …

Data-Driven Analyses In Obesity And Chemosensory Neuroimaging, Michael Charles Farruggia Oct 2022

Data-Driven Analyses In Obesity And Chemosensory Neuroimaging, Michael Charles Farruggia

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Data-driven functional connectivity analyses in the chemical senses are relatively uncommon, with current literature largely predominated by Psychophysiological Interaction (PPI), Dynamic Causal Modeling (DCM), or Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) techniques. The aim of this dissertation is to expand data-driven analyses in the chemical senses (and using chemosensory stimuli) to promote the use of techniques not based on a priori hypotheses or derived from potentially irreproducible literature.Chapter One details a systematic review of functional connectivity analysis in the chemosenses, which demonstrates that, out of 103 studies examined, the vast majority use hypothesis-driven techniques. Moreover, these studies comprise topics of olfaction, gustation, …

Monitoring Translation Regulation By Structured Rna Elements, Caroline Focht Oct 2022

Monitoring Translation Regulation By Structured Rna Elements, Caroline Focht

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Translation initiation across domains of life is a tightly regulated process, and functional RNA motifs are critical regulatory features. This dissertation largely focuses on developing a novel technique with which to quantify the effect these RNA elements have on translation initiation and on unraveling the functional requirements of these structures. I have leveraged RelE’s ribosome-dependent endonuclease activity to develop a quantitative assay for translationally regulated mRNAs and validated this method on two bacterial translational riboswitches. I have also demonstrated its applicability to eukaryotic systems by showing that RelE can measure isoform-driven differences in ribosome loading between yeast 5′ leader sequences. …

Robots That Tutor In Complex And Dynamic Environments, Nicole Salomons Oct 2022

Robots That Tutor In Complex And Dynamic Environments, Nicole Salomons

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Robots have shown great promise in being effective tutors for both children andadults. For instance, they have been shown to be successful in math tutoring for children [203], interruptions training for adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder [204], and assisting the elderly while exercising [87]. Yet, despite the great potential of tutoring robots, most studies have focused on providing short-term tutoring either in a laboratory or a school while the researcher is present. For robots to be more broadly successful, users need to be able to practice skills on a more prolonged basis and in the wild. This requires robotic systems …

Molecular Mechanisms That Promote Fitness Of A Mammalian Gut Symbiotic Bacterium, Weiwei Han Oct 2022

Molecular Mechanisms That Promote Fitness Of A Mammalian Gut Symbiotic Bacterium, Weiwei Han

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

The mammalian gut is densely populated with trillions of microbes, collectively termed the gut microbiota. The gut microbiota is critical to the health of the host. Therefore, it is critical to understand how beneficial microbes persist in the gut. This dissertation presents molecular mechanisms by which conserved genetic factors promote gut colonization by the abundant human gut symbiotic bacteria from the Bacteroides genus. Bacteroides species have an extraordinary ability to utilize various complex polysaccharides available in the gut. I have identified the global regulon of a transcriptional regulator, BT4338, necessary for the utilization of polysaccharides and intestinal colonization by B. …

Societal Perceptions Surrounding Child Maltreatment And Mental Health, Olivia K. Smith Oct 2022

Societal Perceptions Surrounding Child Maltreatment And Mental Health, Olivia K. Smith

Selected Honors Theses

Child maltreatment, mental illness, and criminal behavior are all commonly known topics and a wide variety of research has been conducted to investigate the implications of all three concepts. Even though there is quality research on each of these topics, the awareness of important facts and theories in these areas may not be known to the general public. This study surveyed university students on their knowledge of the characteristics and risk factors of victims of child maltreatment, in addition to their perceptions of people with mental illness. Items included in the study were comprised of items from Taylor and Dear’s …

An Objective Structured Clinical Examination For Central Line Placement Using Ultrasound-Guided And Landmark Guided Technique, Morgan Jones, Hannah Redden Oct 2022

An Objective Structured Clinical Examination For Central Line Placement Using Ultrasound-Guided And Landmark Guided Technique, Morgan Jones, Hannah Redden

Doctoral Projects

Central venous catheters (CVCs) are a vital part of the care and safety for critically ill patients requiring surgery. CVCs allow the anesthesia provider to administer medications that may be corrosive to smaller veins, monitor hemodynamic stability, and provide a way to swiftly treat hypovolemia and states of shock (Butterworth et al., 2018). CVCs also provide a route for access in patients with poor peripheral vasculature and a means for cardiac pacing (Butterworth et al., 2018). Placement of CVCs can be obtained through ultrasound-guided and landmark-guided methods. The major impediment of CVC placement is the lack of proper training in …

Implementing A Staff Education Module For Early Identification Of Depression In Intellectually Disabled Individuals, Charlie Crafton Oct 2022

Implementing A Staff Education Module For Early Identification Of Depression In Intellectually Disabled Individuals, Charlie Crafton

Doctoral Projects

Depression in a normally developed individual can be easy to identify. Sadness and other mood changes are easily noticed. Even in children, symptoms such as mood swings and crankiness, and the loss of interest in things they used to enjoy can be easily recognized by family, teachers, and other caregivers. What makes depression so hard to diagnose in individuals with conditions such as Autism or other intellectual disabilities is the patient’s inability to communicate. Providers must rely on their behavior for diagnostic purposes. This can be difficult for those diagnosed with Autism because the core symptoms of Autism may overlap …

Spatial Variation In Hard Bottom Coral Communities Of The Coastal West Florida Shelf, Nicole Blank, Sandra D. Brooke, Brian K. Walker Oct 2022

Spatial Variation In Hard Bottom Coral Communities Of The Coastal West Florida Shelf, Nicole Blank, Sandra D. Brooke, Brian K. Walker

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Hard bottom coral and sponge communities differ along portions of the West Florida Shelf (WFS) in species occurrence, diversity, and/or size. However, the composition and spatial distribution of these communities are not well understood. Community transitions have been proposed in the central portion of the WFS around Tampa Bay, Cedar Key, and as far south as Charlotte Harbor, but supporting data are sparse. Fifteen sites in three regions of Florida were surveyed for species distribution, density, and demographics. Distinct communities were found between St Teresa, Hudson, and Tarpon Springs. Coral and sponge densities were highest off Tarpon Springs followed by …

Confronting State Violence: Lessons From India's Farmer Protests, Smita Narula Oct 2022

Confronting State Violence: Lessons From India's Farmer Protests, Smita Narula

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

In December 2021, following a year of sustained mass protests, farmers in India forced the repeal of three controversial Farm Laws that attempted to deregulate India’s agricultural sector in service of corporate interests. Farmers feared that the laws would dismantle price supports for key crops, jeopardize their livelihoods, and facilitate a corporate takeover of India’s agrarian economy. This Article situates India’s historic farmer protests in the context of the country’s longstanding agrarian crisis and the corporate capture of agriculture worldwide. I argue that the protests arose in response not only to the Farm Laws, but also to decades of state-sponsored …

Millennial Retention Through Wellness In The Automotive Manufacturing Industry, Caroline Patterson Oct 2022

Millennial Retention Through Wellness In The Automotive Manufacturing Industry, Caroline Patterson

Senior Theses

Wellness programs are known to be effective and beneficial to both companies and their employees, especially among millennials. Even more importance is now assigned to implementing new strategies for attracting and retaining millennials in the wake of the Great Resignation. This is imperative particularly for automotive manufacturing companies. Attracting and retaining millennials effectively can be done by considering and implementing holistic wellness programs that address all four of the following factors: physical health, mental and emotional health, community and family health, and financial health. Within these four pillars, a company should integrate incentives; accessibility and flexibility; diversity equity and inclusion; …
