Let The Machines Do The Dirty Work: Social Media, Machine Learning Technology And The Iteration Of Racialized Surveillance, Subhah Wadhawan
Let The Machines Do The Dirty Work: Social Media, Machine Learning Technology And The Iteration Of Racialized Surveillance, Subhah Wadhawan
Canadian Journal of Law and Technology
Post 9/11, where the current social and cultural temperature has constructed Islam as interchangeable with terrorism, digital intermediaries have responded with increased censorship of speech related to, emerging from, or advocating Islamic ideology. At the heart of this paper is the argument that digital intermediaries have relied on the opaqueness of machine learning technology (‘‘MLT”) to realize racialized surveillance, whereby speech concerning Islamic content has been disproportionally censored. This paper maps out how inherent biases concerning the ideology of Islam have been interwoven into the coding and machine learning used by the major tech giants. As a result of the …
Onlife Harms: Uber And Sexual Violence, Amanda Turnbull
Onlife Harms: Uber And Sexual Violence, Amanda Turnbull
Canadian Journal of Law and Technology
Uber markets itself as a technology company that is managed primarily by ML algorithms with the support of human engineers. Yet, in its 2019 Report, the role that its technology played in relation to sexual violence is, for all intents and purposes, absent. Likewise, solutions dealing specifically with the role of technology in facilitating gender-based violence are also missing from the series of initiatives in which Uber has invested that are aimed at preventing sexual violence. Uber was not sufficiently rigorous in defining the problem it was trying to solve. It was a missed opportunity that has resulted in continued …
Technologies Of Servitude Understanding Firmware Tpms As Interests In Personal Property, Anthony D. Rosborough
Technologies Of Servitude Understanding Firmware Tpms As Interests In Personal Property, Anthony D. Rosborough
Canadian Journal of Law and Technology
Widespread computerization and embedded system design has facilitated the pervasive and latent implementation of technological protection measures (‘‘TPMs”) to restrict device firmware access. Often referred to as ‘‘digital locks,” these restrictions impose a whole host of limitations on how owners use and manage the increasing number of products and devices in which they are incorporated. In many cases, TPM restrictions can prevent activities with social, environmental, and economical benefits, including repair, repurposing, and interoperability. In response, governments around the world are now revisiting and scrutinizing their TPM anti-circumvention laws within copyright and competition policy. Beyond these perspectives, this article looks …

Particles of AISI 304L stainless steel powder were spheroidized by the induction plasma spheroidization process (TekSphero-15 spheroidization system) to assess the effects of the spheroidization process on powder and part properties. The morphology of both as-received and spheroidized powders was characterized by measuring particle size and shape distribution. The chemistry of powders was studied using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy for evaluation of composing elements, and the powder’s microstructure was assessed by X-ray diffraction for phase identification and by electron backscattered diffraction patterns for crystallography characterization. The Revolution Powder Analyzer was used to quantify powder flowability. The mechanical properties …
“Traditional Mexican Midwifery” Tourism Excludes Indigenous “Others” And Threatens Sustainability, Rosalynn A. Vega
“Traditional Mexican Midwifery” Tourism Excludes Indigenous “Others” And Threatens Sustainability, Rosalynn A. Vega
Anthropology Faculty Publications
Drawn by the allure of “ancient cultures,” tourists inadvertently consume deauthenticated indigenous practices, including ethnomedical traditions such as midwifery. This is especially true in the case of “Traditional Mexican Midwifery” since stark differences exist between how midwifery practices unfold in indigenous contexts and how they are represented to global tourists. “Traditional Mexican Midwifery” tourism is a unique lens for examining some of the underlying, intersectional issues threatening “sustainability” in ethnomedical tourism. When nonindigenous individuals position themselves as representatives of “Traditional Mexican Midwifery” and indigenous midwives are excluded from profit chains, this type of tourism not only fails to meet the …
Innovation In Adversity, Clark Asay, Stephanie Plamondon
Innovation In Adversity, Clark Asay, Stephanie Plamondon
Faculty Scholarship
Adverse experiences, like long-term poverty, can inhibit innovation. But as much research and many real-world examples show, adversity can also stimulate innovation. Indeed, the COVID-19 pandemic provides a number of recent examples where adverse conditions have led individuals, firms, and governments to innovate in the hope of benefiting society.
Despite the fact that some forms of adversity undermine innovation while others stimulate it, legal scholars have largely failed to distinguish between the two forms or even account for adversity's relationship to innovation when assessing innovation law and policy, including intellectual property (IP) laws. Yet given adversity's significant role in affecting …

The Depauw Story - A Retrospective On The Beginnings Of Our Institutional Sustainability Initiative (2008 - 2021), Jeannette K. Pope
Interdisciplinary Faculty Scholarship
On September 15, 2008, DePauw University joined the community of the nearly 700 other institutions of Higher Education that had “pledged to neutralize the greenhouse gas emissions of their institutions and make environmental awareness a key component of campus life” by signing the American College and Universities Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC, hereafter referred to as the PCC). This action established the Office of Sustainability at DePauw, which formally dedicated human resources to the emerging discipline of campus sustainability for the first time, but it did not begin the conversations about environmental best practices on our campus. To fully understand how …

Mechanical Engineering Capstone Design Projects
Through the filtration process used in Amgen, pods are used to filter out cell particles and extract the protein. These filter pods are disposed of after every filtration process, and the disposal process can take a long time. Employees currently must remove filter pods manually from unsafe heights, which could potentially cause issues. Along with the unsafe heights, the filters weigh around 30 pounds when soiled and two employees currently remove 30 pods per rack with 5 racks in the centrifuge room. Pods are removed one-by-one from multiple levels and placed into a trash bin, which is then wheeled to …

Western Herbalism: What Drives Individuals Within Rhode Island To Study This Ancient Healing Modality?, Kyla Shea
Student Publications
People globally rely on herbal practices as their main form of healing, yet few people in the West understand how to properly identify and effectively use herbs. This loss of knowledge regarding traditional healing practices was done so intentionally during enslavement and colonization, resulting in exploitation and misinterpretation of herbal practices. By reclaiming this knowledge, it is not only a way to improve the health of communities and the land, but it is also a way of reclaiming ancestral traditions and connection with oneself. Furthermore, this research paper explores the complexities of Western herbalism and determines what drives individuals within …

The Effect Of Peer Support On Weight Loss In Young Adults, Astride Honore
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
The current generation of youth may be the first in the United States who dies sooner than their parents and lives sicker. Stereotyping and discrimination may degrade communication between overweight/obese patients and their providers, exacerbating this negative trend. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to determine if participation in online support groups is an effective tool to assist obese young adults in weight management. Six participants followed a low-calorie diet (1500 cal/day for women and 1800 cal/day for men) and engaged in 30 minutes of daily exercise. All participants also filled out the Obesity and Weight Loss Quality …
