Accidental fires are prevalent in low-income communities and one of the solutions to decrease fire risk is to apply fire retardants on combustible materials. While extensive research was available in creating fire retardants with inorganic chemicals, further studies are needed for bio-based fire retardants. The development of bio-based fire retardants involves testing organic matter for the presence of fire-retardant compounds such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and polyphenols. This study sought to determine the effectiveness of the peels of Aloe barbadensis miller (aloe vera), Mangifera indica (mangoes), and Persea americana (avocados) in creating bio-based fire retardants for coco lumber. Maceration was used …

Medical Ethics Principles Underscore Advocating For Human Papillomavirus Vaccine, C Mary Healy, Lara S Savas, Ross Shegog, Rebecca Lunstroth, Sally W Vernon

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Studies have consistently shown that vaccination rates against human papillomavirus (HPV) lag far behind other adolescent vaccinations recommended at the same age, resulting in exposing adolescents to unnecessary future risk of infection, and genital and head and neck cancers. Studies also have demonstrated that a major barrier to vaccination is lack of a strong provider recommendation. Factors that providers offer for failing to give a strong recommendation range from perception that the child is not at risk or the need to explain that the vaccine is not mandated (lack of equity and justice) or respect for parental autonomy. We look …

Living By Religion, Playing By Law: Early Glimpses Of The Ban On Triple Talaq, Kalindi Kokal Dec 2022

Living By Religion, Playing By Law: Early Glimpses Of The Ban On Triple Talaq, Kalindi Kokal

Socio-Legal Review

The Supreme Court of India declared triple talaq, a type of Islamic divorce, as unconstitutional in 2017. Following that, in 2019, the Parliament enacted the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019, which criminalised the pronouncement of triple talaq. Triple talaq as a form of divorce continues to hold legitimacy under the uncodified religious law that Muslims in India abide by in their everyday life. What, then, is the impact of the criminalisation of this practice at the level of the community? What does intervention by the criminal justice system mean for justice in inter-personal disputes that are …

The Majesty And Dignity Of Courts: Changes In Court Dynamics With The Onset Of The Covid-19 Pandemic In India, Rahela Khorakiwala

Socio-Legal Review

The procedures and practices of courts were brought to a sudden halt with the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. This led to the promulgation of virtual courts where previously known traditions of the courts changed in many ways. The dress code was watered down and the understanding of the majesty and dignity of courts had to be re-established. This paper documents the seismic changes that occurred in virtual courts and how the courts had to keep redefining what contempt meant in the context of virtual courts. It is argued that majesty and theatrics affect the dispensation of justice, so when …

Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya

Since the early 2000’s, Indonesian literary works raising the issue of homosexuality have been increasing in number. However, the proliferation of discourse on homosexuality cannot be necessarily interpreted as Indonesian literature’s increasing sympathy with homosexuality. Adequate discussion is needed regarding perceptions, perspectives, and attitudes towards homosexuality in literary works with the theme of homosexuality. In relation to this, we found that works raising the issue of homosexuality have not been able to escape from the framework of the prevailing social order and norms, namely heterosexism. This study aims to see how the idea of heterosexism works in narrating and embodying …

The Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) process has grown within the time oil exploration was conducted, and many recovery methods were invented to maximize production. One of the promising recovery techniques is carbon dioxide (CO2) flooding. However, CO2 flooding has its disadvantages where due to different mobility and heterogeneity between CO2 and reservoir, the sweep efficiency is reduced because of gas channelling and viscous fingering. Thus, the application of surfactant is introduced to solve the problem. But, by using surfactants in CO2 flooding, loss of surfactant to the formation is observed. Due to this setback, the cost of the EOR process …

Preparation Of Azomethine Derivatives (Schif Bases) Chitosan Apis Mellifera, A S. Mengliev, G A. Ikhtiyarova

Technical science and innovation

Chitin and chitosan should be considered as derivatives of cellulose. The basis for such an approach to these polysaccharides is their chemical structure. The macromolecular chains of these polymers are formed by glucopyranose cycles, which, being connected by β- (1→4) glucosidic bonds, form linear polymer chains. The biological functions and mechanical properties of these polysaccharides are largely determined by the conformation of macromolecules and the distribution of reactive groups in them. Due to the unique properties of chitin and chitosan, they are becoming increasingly important in the practical and especially in the medical and biological activities of mankind. The aim …
