Overdose: The Public Health Policies That Caused The Opioid Crisis, Benjamin T. Suslavich
Overdose: The Public Health Policies That Caused The Opioid Crisis, Benjamin T. Suslavich
Cleveland State Law Review
Recently, local governments have successfully sued pharmaceutical manufacturers for damages related to the opioid crisis in the United States under the theory that these pharmaceuticals were responsible for causing addictions and deaths across the nation. However, the opioid crisis was, in fact, caused by the creation of national public health policies which compelled the prescription of opioid analgesics. The dogma of the "pain movement," which spearheaded public health policies, was adopted in some form by nearly every healthcare regulator in the country. With unchecked power and influence on the U.S. healthcare system, healthcare regulators mutated slightly misleading advertising by pharmaceutical …

The term alternative media refers to media that serves as alternative sources of information in lieu of mainstream media. In contrast to social media, alternative media are mass media entities that carry out journalistic functions even though they are affiliated with community organizations. Thus, alternative media are expected to provide authentic news just like mainstream media in Muslim countries. Islamic alternative media are also required to produce quality news, and this was especially seen during the COVID-19 pandemic, when a flood of information resulted in confusion among the community. In response, training that aimed to enhance journalistic professionalism for practitioners …

Recent Trends In Mineral Processing Based On Density And Particle Size–A Review, Ahmed Sobhy
Recent Trends In Mineral Processing Based On Density And Particle Size–A Review, Ahmed Sobhy
Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Most mineral beneficiation development in the world focus on size and density-based separation technologies. In recent years, ore size-based and density-based separation technologies have attracted more consideration to obtaining rough or final high-quality products. Due to the dissimilarity of physical properties like particle size and density, valuable and gangue minerals can be segregated via size-based and density-based separation technologies. Removing the impurities and recovering the target minerals are accomplished by size-based separation technologies alone or are usually followed by cleaning processes utilizing density-based separation abilities. The density variation among valuable and gangue minerals leads to dissimilarities in settling velocity in …
Agenda Control In The Indian Parliament And The Impact On Its Oversight Function – Analysis And Evidence, Maansi Verma
Agenda Control In The Indian Parliament And The Impact On Its Oversight Function – Analysis And Evidence, Maansi Verma
Socio-Legal Review
Separation of powers is understood as the diffusion of powers among different branches of the government, with each branch acting as a check on the other. This principle is considered an anti-thesis to totalitarianism, preventing the absolute concentration of power and thus protecting liberty. The Cabinet-style parliamentary form of government, with its genesis in Britain, fused together the executive with the legislature. This resulted in powerful executives and weakened legislatures with limited oversight capabilities. As institutions evolved over time, internal rules and procedures also evolved both as constraints and enablers of executive dominance, by distributing the powers of agenda control. …

Women, Gender Politics, And Resistance In Kashmir, Seema Kazi
Socio-Legal Review
This article focuses on Kashmiri women and the gender politics underpinning the August 5, 2019 revocation of Article 370 in Kashmir. Reclaiming Kashmiri women’s property rights was among the justifications cited by the state for revoking Kashmir’s autonomy. Paradoxically, however, most analyses centered on its political implications. Kashmiri women’s opinions regarding the revocation, the state’s use of the women’s rights argument to justify the same, or Kashmiri women’s rights and experiences in the wake of the revocation were seldom the subjects of discussion or analysis. Beginning with a brief overview of Kashmiri women’s role in the Kashmiri struggle, I juxtapose …

Effects Of Interest Rate Ceiling On Sustainability Of Microfinance Institutions: Lessons From Tanzania, Goodluck Charles
Business Management Review
This study explores the effects of an interest rate ceiling on the sustainability of Microfinance Institutions (MFIs). Based on qualitative research which entailed collection of online data from 53 respondents and in-depth face-to-face interviews with 10 MFI practitioners in Tanzania, it is evident that an interest rate ceiling interferes with competitive market forces. Given that MFIs vary in size, operational capacity, customer segment and business model, applying a single blanket interest rate leads to capital and credit diversion, hidden non-interest charges, the emergence of informal lenders and a black market, the withholding of credit from risky markets and the closure …

Language Issues Of Migrants During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Reimagining Migrant (Linguistic) Integration Programs In (Post-)Pandemic Times, Ariane Macalinga Borlongan
Journal of English and Applied Linguistics
This paper surveys the language issues experienced by migrants during the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequently proposes a (linguistic) integration program for migrants, which is responsive and sensitive to their needs particularly during crises and emergencies. Migrants’ access to disease prevention and health care has been limited, and one of the reasons for this is the language barrier. Likewise, migrants have also voiced out their difficulty communicating with health care providers also because of language. Migrants have also felt isolation because of their inability to reach out to people who could likewise speak their language and they can communicate with. Another …

Teachers' Perspectives On Translanguaging As A Pedagogical Resource In Senior High School English Classes, Karen Lynn G. Macawile, Sterling M. Plata
Journal of English and Applied Linguistics
Translanguaging has been documented in previous research as a pedagogical resource in language classrooms. However, the monolinguistic culture prevents the leveraging of this resource in language learning. In addition, despite the extensive research on translanguaging, its use as a pedagogical resource is limited, particularly in the Philippine context. This study explores teachers’ perspectives on translanguaging in Senior High School subjects where English is the medium of instruction. Findings from focus group discussions reveal that the participants leverage translanguaging as a resource to help students in knowledge construction, meaning-making, and problem-solving. This study concludes with implications for policymakers and language teachers …
