Faith Integration In Stem Courses For Undergraduates: Exemplars Of Pedagogical Practices, David Klanderman, Clayton Carlson, Tina Decker, Fred Haan, Victor T. Norman, Abbie Schrotenboer, Derek Schuurman, James Turner

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

In his book On Christian Teaching, David Smith offers multiple ways in which one’s Christian faith commitments influence pedagogical practices. Specific examples are drawn from the humanities, particularly from languages and literature. Some may conclude that such discussions are less appropriate in areas such as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). We disagree and offer exemplars aligned with a set of six curricular criteria identified by Wayne Au. We argue that these exemplars emerge naturally from our Christian beliefs and are “faith-influenced” even if not every strategy embodies a narrower integration of faith and pedagogy.

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background

Extensive drainage of peatlands in the southeastern United States coastal plain for the purposes of agriculture and timber harvesting has led to large releases of soil carbon as carbon dioxide (CO2) due to enhanced peat decomposition. Growth in mechanisms that provide financial incentives for reducing emissions from land use and land-use change could increase funding for hydrological restoration that reduces peat CO2 emissions from these ecosystems. Measuring soil respiration and physical drivers across a range of site characteristics and land use histories is valuable for understanding how CO2 emissions from peat decomposition may respond to raising water table levels. …

Privacy-Aware Estimation Of Relatedness In Admixed Populations, Su Wang, Miran Kim, Wentao Li, Xiaoqian Jiang, Han Chen, Arif Harmanci

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND: Estimation of genetic relatedness, or kinship, is used occasionally for recreational purposes and in forensic applications. While numerous methods were developed to estimate kinship, they suffer from high computational requirements and often make an untenable assumption of homogeneous population ancestry of the samples. Moreover, genetic privacy is generally overlooked in the usage of kinship estimation methods. There can be ethical concerns about finding unknown familial relationships in third-party databases. Similar ethical concerns may arise while estimating and reporting sensitive population-level statistics such as inbreeding coefficients for the concerns around marginalization and stigmatization.

RESULTS: Here, we present SIGFRIED, which makes …

Routinization, Within-Occupation Task Changes And Long-Run Employment Dynamics, Davide Consoli, Giovanni Marin, Francesco Rentocchini, Francesco Vona

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The present study adds to the literature on routinization and employment by capturing within occupation task changes over the period 1980-2010. The main contributions are the measurement of such changes and the combination of two data sources on occupational task content for the United States: the Dictionary of Occupational Titles and the Occupational Information Network. We show that within-occupation reorientation away from routine tasks: i) accounts for 1/3 of the decline in routine-task use; ii) accelerates in the 1990s, decelerates in the 2000s but with significant convergence across occupations; iii) allows workers to escape the employment and wage decline, conditional …
