Velocity Map Images Of Desorbing Oxygen From Sub-Surface States Of Rh(111), Arved C. Dorst, Friedrich Güthoff, Daniel Schauermann, Alec M. Wodtke, Daniel Killelea, Tim Schäfer
Chemistry: Faculty Publications and Other Works
We combine velocity map imaging (VMI) with temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) experiments to record the angular-resolved velocity distributions of recombinatively-desorbing oxygen from Rh(111). We assign the velocity distributions to desorption from specific surface and sub-surface states by matching the recorded distributions to the desorption temperature. These results provide insight into the recombinative desorption mechanisms and the availability of oxygen for surface-catalyzed reactions.
Testing Modified Gravity Theories With Numerical Solutions Of The External Field Effect In Rotationally Supported Galaxies, Stacy S. Mcgaugh
Testing Modified Gravity Theories With Numerical Solutions Of The External Field Effect In Rotationally Supported Galaxies, Stacy S. Mcgaugh
Faculty Scholarship
The strong equivalence principle is violated by gravity theories of Milgromian dynamics [modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND)] through the action of the external field effect. We test two different Lagrangian theories Aquadratic-Lagrangian (AQUAL) and quasilinear MOND (QUMOND) based on their numerical solutions of the external field effect, by comparing two independent estimates of the mean external field strength of the nearby universe: a theory-deduced value from fitting the outer rotation curves of 114 galaxies and an empirical value from the large-scale distribution of cosmic baryons. The AQUAL-deduced external field strength from rotation curves agrees with that from the large-scale cosmic environment, …

The Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission has presented a new opportunity to study the fine scale structures and phenomena of Earth’s magnetosphere, including cross scale processes associated with the Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability (KHI). We present an overview of 19 MMS observations of the KHI from September 2015 to June 2017. Unitless growth rates and unstable solid angles for each of the 19 events were calculated using 5 techniques to automatically detect plasma regions on either side of the magnetopause boundary. There was no apparent correlation between solar wind conditions during the KHI and its growth rate and unstable solid angle, though we …

A new multi-static meteor radar (CONDOR) has recently been installed in northern Chile. This CONDOR meteor radar (30.3°S, 70.7°W) and the Adelaide meteor radar (35°S, 138°E) have provided longitudinally spaced observations of the mean winds, tides and planetary waves of the PW-tides interaction cases we present here. We have observed a Quasi-6-Day Wave (Q6DW) enhancement in MLT winds at the middle latitudes (30.3°S, 35°S) during the unusual minor South Hemisphere SSW 2019 by the ground-based meteor radars. Tidal analysis also indicates modulation of the Q6DW w/ amplitude ~15 [m/s] and diurnal tides w/ amplitude ~60 [m/s]. Another case we present …

Road pavement condition assessment is essential for maintenance, asset management, and budgeting for pavement infrastructure. Countries allocate a substantial annual budget to maintain and improve local, regional, and national highways. Pavement condition is assessed by measuring several pavement characteristics such as roughness, surface skid resistance, pavement strength, deflection, and visual surface distresses. Visual inspection identifies and quantifies surface distresses, and the condition is assessed using standard rating scales. This paper critically analyzes the research trends in the academic literature, professional practices and current commercial solutions for surface condition ratings by civil authorities. We observe that various surface condition rating systems …

Alzheimer's disease biomarkers are becoming increasingly important for characterizing the longitudinal course of disease, predicting the timing of clinical and cognitive symptoms, and for recruitment and treatment monitoring in clinical trials. In this work, we develop and evaluate three methods for modelling the longitudinal course of amyloid accumulation in three cohorts using amyloid PET imaging. We then use these novel approaches to investigate factors that influence the timing of amyloid onset and the timing from amyloid onset to impairment onset in the Alzheimer's disease continuum. Data were acquired from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI), the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of …

Sub-Recent Microfauna Within Allogenic Sediments At The Bottom Of A Deep Cave, Njemica (Biokovo Mt., Croatia), Tomislav Kurečić, Valentina Hajek Tadesse, Lara Wacha, Marija Horvat, Nina Trinajstić, Ivan Mišur
International Journal of Speleology
Clastic sediments deposited at the bottom of the vertical, nearly 1000 m deep Njemica Cave (Biokovo Mountain, Croatia) were analysed. Owing to the vertical morphology of the cave, the occurrences of clastic sediments are sparse. Small, up to decimetre-thick, undisturbed sediment accumulations situated near the siphon lake revealed interesting palaeontological and mineralogical data. These data are used as a useful proxy for discussing depositional processes, the provenance of the sediments and paleo-habitats of the subterranean fauna.
The sub-recent assemblages of ostracods were discovered within the sediment, and they were shown to be correlative to the known endemic species in the …
