Interaction With Augmented Reality Sandbox Does Not Produce Greater Gains In Topographic Map Skills For Undergraduate Students, Celeste Kenworthy Jan 2022

Interaction With Augmented Reality Sandbox Does Not Produce Greater Gains In Topographic Map Skills For Undergraduate Students, Celeste Kenworthy

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

The augmented reality (AR) sandbox allows students to interact with topographic maps in a 3D space. Being able to understand topographic maps is important to geologists and they are taught in many introductory geology courses. Recent research has focused on whether the AR sandbox can improve students’ topographic map skills. Previous studies have found that students who interact with the AR sandbox do not score significantly better on topographic map assessments (TMAs) than their peers. One proposed reason for this is the limited time students have to interact with the AR sandbox. This study sought to address this by creating …

Computers have evolved over the years, and as the evolution continues, we have been ushered into an era where high-speed internet has made it possible for devices in our homes, hospital, energy, and industry to communicate with each other. This era is known as the Internet of Things (IoT). IoT has several benefits in a country’s economy’s health, energy, transportation, and agriculture sectors. These enormous benefits, coupled with the computational constraint of IoT devices, make it challenging to deploy enhanced security protocols on them, making IoT devices a target of cyber-attacks. One approach that has been used in traditional computing …

Recent Advances In Thermochemical Conversion Of Biomass Into Drop-In Fuel:A Review, Ishaq Kariim, Hulda Swai, Thomas Kivevele

The global evolutional changes towards the use of renewable energy sources for transportation purposes are on the increase in an attempt to mitigate the environmental hazard and the proposed depletion associated with fossil fuel resources. Pyrolysis and hydrothermal processes of biomass conversion into renewable biofuels are resulted into the production of biocrude with high oxygen content due to the presence of large amount of oxygenates in biomass feedstocks. The presence of oxygen content in bio-oil causes corrosion, low heating value, instability and high viscosity in bio-oil. These challenges have necessitated the application of upgrading techniques such as catalytic hydrodeoxygenation process …

n this paper, we use Polyethylene Oxide (PEO) particles to control the morphology of Formamidinium (FA)‑rich perovskite films and achieve large grains with improved optoelectronic properties. Consequently, a planar perovskite solar cell (PSC) is fabricated with additions of 5 wt% of PEO, and the highest PCE of 18.03% was obtained. This solar cell is also shown to retain up to 80% of its initial PCE after about 140 h of storage under the ambient conditions (average relative humidity of 62.5 ± 3.25%) in an unencapsulated state. Furthermore, the steady‑state PCE of the PEO‑modified PSC device remained stable for long (over …

Cancer research has seen explosive development exploring deep learning (DL) techniques for analysing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images for predicting brain tumours. We have observed a substantial gap in explanation, interpretability, and high accuracy for DL models. Consequently, we propose an explanation-driven DL model by utilising a convolutional neural network (CNN), local interpretable model-agnostic explanation (LIME), and Shapley additive explanation (SHAP) for the prediction of discrete subtypes of brain tumours (meningioma, glioma, and pituitary) using an MRI image dataset. Unlike previous models, our model used a dual-input CNN approach to prevail over the classification challenge with images of inferior quality …

Introduction: Of all the cancers that afflict women, breast cancer (BC) has the second-highest mortality rate, and it is also believed to be the primary cause of the high death rate. Breast cancer is the most common cancer that affects women globally. There are two types of breast tumors: benign (less harmful and unlikely to become breast cancer) and malignant (which are very dangerous and might result in aberrant cells that could result in cancer).

Methods: To find breast abnormalities like masses and micro-calcifications, competent and educated radiologists often examine mammographic images. This study focuses on computer-aided diagnosis to help …

The Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Neurocognitive Prediction Challenge (ABCD-NP-Challenge) is a community-driven competition that challenges competitors to develop algorithms to predict fluid intelligence scores from T1-w MRI images. In this work, a two-step deep learning pipeline is proposed to improve the prediction accuracy of fluid intelligence scores. In terms of the first step, the main contributions of this study include the following: (1) the concepts of the residual network (ResNet) and the squeeze-and-excitation network (SENet) are utilized to improve the original 3D U-Net; (2) in the segmentation process, the pixels in symmetrical brain regions are assigned the same label; …
