Effective Differentiation Strategies For Engaging English Language Learners In The General Education Classroom: An Implementation Study, Renee Ullom Jan 2022

Effective Differentiation Strategies For Engaging English Language Learners In The General Education Classroom: An Implementation Study, Renee Ullom

Theses and Dissertations

Because of the growing population of English Language Learners (ELL) (U.S. Department of Education, 2020) and lack of time, training, and resources for teachers, there is an intense need for identification of effective differentiation strategies for teachers to implement in the general education classroom, which allows ELL students to engage in grade-level curriculum while acquiring English. This mixed methods research study examines who ELL students are, barriers to success faced by ELL students, barriers to teachers when planning and delivering curriculum in the general education classroom. The investigation additionally explores the identification and implementation of effective differentiation strategies for ELL …

Data Driven Approach To Saltwater Disposal (Swd) Well Location Optimization In North Dakota, Kalyanaraman Venugopal Jan 2022

Data Driven Approach To Saltwater Disposal (Swd) Well Location Optimization In North Dakota, Kalyanaraman Venugopal

Theses and Dissertations

The sharp increase in oil and gas production in the Williston Basin of North Dakota since 2006 has resulted in a significant increase in produced water volumes. Primary mechanism for disposal of produced water is by injection into underground Inyan Kara formation through Class-II Saltwater Disposal (SWD) wells. With number of SWD wells anticipated to increase from 900 to over 1400 by 2035, localized pressurization and other potential issues that could affect performance of future oil and SWD wells, there was a need for a reliable model to select locations of future SWD wells for optimum performance. Since it is …

Modeling And Simulations Of Stress Shadow Effect On Multistage Hydraulic Fractures, Agustinus Zandy Jan 2022

Modeling And Simulations Of Stress Shadow Effect On Multistage Hydraulic Fractures, Agustinus Zandy

Theses and Dissertations

Multistage hydraulic fracturing (MsHF) is a technique often combined with horizontal drilling for the extraction of oil or gas from unconventional plays. MsHF alters the magnitude and orientation of the principal stresses along the length of an induced fracture. This stress alteration in the vicinity of the hydraulic fracture is commonly called the stress shadow, and the shadow impacts the propagation of the subsequent fracture. This study utilized numerical simulations and theory-based analytical models to establish a relationship between hydraulic fracture and stress shadow development.

This study developed a methodology for optimizing hydraulic fracture spacing by considering the stress shadow …

Ai Governance In The Financial Industry, Robin C. Feldman, Kara Stein Jan 2022

Ai Governance In The Financial Industry, Robin C. Feldman, Kara Stein

Faculty Scholarship

Legal regimes in the United States generally conceptualize obligations as attaching along one of two pathways: through the entity or the individual. Although these dual conceptualizations made sense in an ordinary pre-modem world, they no longer capture the financial system land scape, now that artificial intelligence has entered the scene. Neither person nor entity, artificial intelligence is an activity or a capacity, something that mediates relations between individuals and entities. And whether we like it or not, artificial intelligence has already reshaped financial markets. From Robinhood, to the Flash Crash, to Twitter's Hash Crash, to the Knight Capital incident, each …

Implementing A (Modern) Progressive Consumption Tax, Manoj Viswanathan Jan 2022

Implementing A (Modern) Progressive Consumption Tax, Manoj Viswanathan

Faculty Scholarship

Progressively taxing consumption has much normative appeal, but pre vious legal scholarship has incorrectly assumed that directly accounting for the expenditures of individual taxpayers is administratively infeasible. Changes in consumer spending and advances in technology require revisiting this assumption. This article proposes a novel framework through which an individual accounting progressive consumption tax (IAPCT) can be imple mented and establishes the IAPCT's superiority to previously proposed forms of progressive consumption taxation. IAPCT advantages include a significant reduction in tax filing costs, improved enforcement, and the immediate de ployment of place-based tax policy.

Federalism By Deception: The Implied Limits On Congressional Power, Bryan K. Fair Jan 2022

Federalism By Deception: The Implied Limits On Congressional Power, Bryan K. Fair

Articles

The purpose of this Article is to lay bare federalism by deception and the theory of implied limits on federal power. Other scholars have recently noted the rise of anti-federalist viewpoints in modern cases. I go a step further to demonstrate how Supreme Court Justices have embraced anti-federal ideology, but have cited Federalist sources, including Marshall, to announce unenumerated limits on federal legislative power.

Stealing Organs?, Benjamin J. Mcmichael Jan 2022

Stealing Organs?, Benjamin J. Mcmichael

Articles

Every nine minutes, a new person joins a waitlist for an organ transplant, and every day, seventeen people die waiting for an organ that will never come. Because the need for organ transplants far outstrips the number of available organs, the policies and rules governing organ allocation in the United States are critically important and highly contentious. Recently, proponents of a new allocation system one focused more on sharing organs across the nation instead of allocating organs primarily to local transplant candidates have gained ground. Bolstered by two separate lawsuits in the past five years, advocates of greater national sharing …

Bringing Predictability To The Chaos Of Punitive Damages, Benjamin Mcmichael, W. Kip Viscusi Jan 2022

Bringing Predictability To The Chaos Of Punitive Damages, Benjamin Mcmichael, W. Kip Viscusi

Articles

Punitive damages remain unique in the American legal system. Awarded in the civil context with none of the protections offered in criminal law, courts levy punitive damages to punish and deter. The Supreme Court of the United States has clearly stated that courts may only seek to achieve these two goals when imposing punitive damages. A closer reading of the Court's punitive damages jurisprudence, however, reveals another goal that has largely been ignored: predictability. Unlike punishment and deterrence, predictability is not a purpose for which to award punitive damages. Instead, the Court requires that, when awarded, the level of punitive …

Agile Approaches Followed, as Did Other Dynamic Methods. These Approaches Remain Heavily Employed in the Development of Contemporary Information Systems. at the Same Time, New Approaches Such …

Creation Of A Neural Network For The American Sign Language To Russian Translation App, John T. Simmons Jan 2022

Creation Of A Neural Network For The American Sign Language To Russian Translation App, John T. Simmons

Capstone Projects

  1. A large population of people utilize American Sign Language for their primary method of communication.
  2. No commercially available product is available for these people for when they need to communicate with speakers of a foreign language.
  3. We must investigate methods to make communication between these two parties easier and more accessible.
  4. By using a neural network to classify images of American Sign Language letters, we can build a service to make translation of American Sign Language into foreign languages possible.

“What Works” Registries Of Interventions To Improve Child And Youth Psychosocial Outcomes: A Critical Appraisal, Nick Axford, Louise Morpeth, Gretchen Bjornstad, Tim Hobbs, Vashti Berry Jan 2022

“What Works” Registries Of Interventions To Improve Child And Youth Psychosocial Outcomes: A Critical Appraisal, Nick Axford, Louise Morpeth, Gretchen Bjornstad, Tim Hobbs, Vashti Berry

Peninsula Medical School

The last decade or more has seen a proliferation of online registries of evidence-based interventions designed to improve child and youth psychosocial outcomes. The purpose of these resources is typically to help decision-makers make sense of the evidence and thereby inform their decision-making about investment in interventions. Most registries are underpinned by standards of evidence, which are used to guide the rating of programs by a panel of experts. While supporters extol the influence of these initiatives in terms of making commissioners more discriminating about what they invest in, detractors contend that they stifle innovation and embody an unduly narrow …

In The Age Of Imperialism: A Study Of Hankow Based On The Maritime Customs Decennial Report (1892-1901), Sze Pui Yin Daisy Jan 2022

In The Age Of Imperialism: A Study Of Hankow Based On The Maritime Customs Decennial Report (1892-1901), Sze Pui Yin Daisy

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

This research is based mainly on the Maritime Customs Decennial Report (1892-1901) to scrutinize the circumstances and development of Hankow, a typical Chinese port, in the Age of Imperialism. This essay argues that the western powers did not merely exploit the Chinese resources in the Age of Imperialism, but came hand in hand with capital, goods, and scientific knowledge, which facilitated trades and introduced technologies to China. This transformed Hankow into a global emporium with not only new constructions but also metropolitan characteristics. To this end, imperialism and modernization co-existed.

Graphical Revamping Of A Crude Distillation Unit Under Two Variable Operational Scenarios - Naphtha Stabilizer And Reformer Operated, Amany G. Abo-Mousa, Dina A. Kamel, Hany A. Elazab, Mamdouh A. Gadalla, Mai K. Fouad

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Energy costs represent significant parts of the total operating costs of crude refining industries. Energy integration is a typical solution to reduce heating and cooling utilities in crude refining plants through maximizing the target temperature of crude oil streams before entering the furnace. Over the past few decades, a significant progress has been made in energy integration methods including Pinch technology and mathematical programming approaches. Example of these is a graphical technique which plots Thot versus Tcold for energy analysis and revamping studies. The current research employs the Thot - Tcold diagrams in an algorithm to retrofit an existing crude …

Untreated pain after surgery leads to poor patient satisfaction, longer hospital length of stay, lower health-related quality of life, and non-compliance with rehabilitation regimens. The aim of this study is to characterize the structure of acute pain trajectories during the postsurgical hospitalization period and quantify their association with pain at 30-days and 1-year after surgery. This cohort study included 2106 adult (≥18 years) surgical patients who consented to participate in the SATISFY-SOS registry (February 1, 2015 to September 30, 2017). Patients were excluded if they did not undergo invasive surgeries, were classified as outpatients, failed to complete follow up assessments …

Is Characteristic Frequency Limiting Real-Time Electrocochleography During Cochlear Implantation?, Amit Walia, Matthew A Shew, Shannon M Lefler, Dorina Kallogjeri, Cameron C Wick, Timothy A Holden, Nedim Durakovic, Amanda J Ortmann, Jacques A Herzog, Craig A Buchman

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Objectives: Electrocochleography (ECochG) recordings during cochlear implantation have shown promise in estimating the impact on residual hearing. The purpose of the study was (1) to determine whether a 250-Hz stimulus is superior to 500-Hz in detecting residual hearing decrement and if so; (2) to evaluate whether crossing the 500-Hz tonotopic, characteristic frequency (CF) place partly explains the problems experienced using 500-Hz.

Design: Multifrequency ECochG comprising an alternating, interleaved acoustic complex of 250- and 500-Hz stimuli was used to elicit cochlear microphonics (CMs) during insertion. The largest ECochG drops (≥30% reduction in CM) were identified. After insertion, ECochG responses were measured …
