Fidget Spinner Generator System For Mi-Star Unit 7.1, Douglas Oppliger Jan 2022

Fidget Spinner Generator System For Mi-Star Unit 7.1, Douglas Oppliger

Mi-STAR

This simple system is an integral and important part of this unit. It allows students to see, feel, and experience how kinetic energy can be transformed to another kind of energy. It is an effective learning tool in the unit because it is reasonably easy to make, has just a few simple and visible components, and reliably transforms enough energy to light an LED (light emitting diode). The LED provides a satisfying light output which is easy to observe.

Dynamics Of Targeted Ransomware Negotiation, Pierce Ryan, John Fokker, Sorcha Healy, Andreas Amann Jan 2022

Dynamics Of Targeted Ransomware Negotiation, Pierce Ryan, John Fokker, Sorcha Healy, Andreas Amann

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

In this paper, we consider how the development of targeted ransomware has affected the dynamics of ransomware negotiations to better understand how to respond to ransomware attacks. We construct a model of ransomware negotiations as an asymmetric non-cooperative two-player game. In particular, our model considers the investments that a malicious actor must make in order to conduct a successful targeted ransomware attack. We demonstrate how imperfect information is a crucial feature for replicating observed real-world behaviour. Furthermore, we present optimal strategies for both the malicious actor and the target, and demonstrate how imperfect information results in a non-trivial optimal strategy …

Geology Of The Porter Gap 7.5–Minute Quadrangle, Alabama, And Stretched Pebble Analysis Within The Western Blue Ridge Of The Southern Appalachians, Tessa Mills

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

The Porter Gap 7.5–minute quadrangle in eastern Alabama contains portions of the undifferentiated sedimentary Knox Group of the Valley and Ridge province, the metamorphic Talladega Group of the western Blue Ridge, and the metamorphic Ashland Supergroup of the eastern Blue Ridge. Three major faults separate the rock units, including the Talladega-Cartersville fault, the Hillabee thrust fault, and the Hollins Line fault. Deformation and metamorphism of rocks within the Talladega Group occurred during the middle to late Mississippian (~334–320 Ma) recorded by stretched pebbles within the Cheaha Quartzite member of the Lay Dam Formation. Stretched pebbles within the Cheaha Quartzite have …

Meltpondnet: A Swin Transformer U-Net For Detection Of Melt Ponds On Arctic Sea Ice, Ivan Sudakow, Vijayan K. Asari, Ruixu Liu, Denis Demchev

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

High-resolution aerial photographs of Arctic region are a great source for different sea ice feature recognition, which are crucial to validate, tune, and improve climate models. Melt ponds on the surface of melting Arctic sea ice are of particular interest as they are sensitive and valuable indicators and are proxy to the processes in the Arctic climate system. Manual analysis of this remote sensing data is extremely difficult and time-consuming due to the complex shapes and unpredictable boundaries of the melt ponds, and that leads to the necessity for automatizing the processes. In this study, we propose a robust and …

Circuit Optimization Techniques For Efficient Ex-Situ Training Of Robust Memristor Based Liquid State Machine, Alex Henderson, Christopher Yakopcic, Cory Merkel, Steven Harbour, Tarek M. Taha, Hananel Hazan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Spiking neural network hardware offers a high performance, power-efficient and robust platform for the processing of complex data. Many of these systems require supervised learning, which poses a challenge when using gradient-based algorithms due to the discontinuous properties of SNNs. Memristor based hardware can offer gains in portability, power reduction, and throughput efficiency when compared to pure CMOS. This paper proposes a memristor-based spiking liquid state machine (LSM). The inherent dynamics of the LSM permit the use of supervised learning without backpropagation for weight updates. To carry out the design space evaluation of the LSM for optimal hardware performance, several …

Deep Learning Anomaly Detection Using Edge Ai, William Holdren Jan 2022

Deep Learning Anomaly Detection Using Edge Ai, William Holdren

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Deep learning anomaly detection is an evolving field with many real-world applications. As more and more devices continue to be added to the Internet of Things (IoT), there is an increasing desire to make use of the additional computational capacity to run demanding tasks. The increase in devices and amounts of data flooding in have led to a greater need for security and outlier detection. Motivated by those facts, this thesis studies the potential of creating a distributed anomaly detection framework. While there have been vast amounts of research into deep anomaly detection, there has been no research into building …

Aerodynamic Characterization Of An Elliptical Fairing In The Wake Of A Bluff Body, Luis Amaya Jan 2022

Aerodynamic Characterization Of An Elliptical Fairing In The Wake Of A Bluff Body, Luis Amaya

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Aerodynamic optimization is a key step in designing planes, cars, and even buildings. Numerical modeling is used to automate the optimization process and can use different methods to iterate through designs. In this process, consideration of the starting design is paramount as a poor choice can use up computational time and effort. Often, these designs are made with the intention of being out in the open, for which studies on shape variations in freestream situations abound. However, for the case where an object must be placed in the wake of another, there is little research. The study presented here aims …

Studying The Robustness Of Machine Learning-Based Malware Detection Models: Analysis, Design, And Implementation, Ahmed Abusnaina Jan 2022

Studying The Robustness Of Machine Learning-Based Malware Detection Models: Analysis, Design, And Implementation, Ahmed Abusnaina

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

With the rise of the popularity of machine learning (ML), it has been shown that ML-based classifiers are susceptible to adversarial examples and concept drifting, where a small modification in the input space may result in misclassification. The ever-evolving nature of the data, the behavioral and pattern shifting over time not only lessened the trust in the machine learning output but also created a barrier for its usage in critical applications. This dissertation builds toward analyzing machine learning-based malware detection systems, including the detection and mitigation of adversarial malware examples. In particular, we first introduce two black-box adversarial attacks on …

Adaptive Sliding Mode Control Of Small Satellites In Formation For Distributed Beamforming Applications, Mason Earl Nixon Jan 2022

Adaptive Sliding Mode Control Of Small Satellites In Formation For Distributed Beamforming Applications, Mason Earl Nixon

Dissertations

The rising popularity of small satellites over the past few decades has created a new boom in space, and, in particular, in low-Earth orbit. Exciting novel applications are being proposed that enable these small satellites to offer many advantages over their monolithic counterparts which can allow for augmentation, or possibly even replacement of more expensive and large alternatives. One particular enabling method is flying small satellites in formation for antenna array applications, which, through coupled dynamical modeling, can be facilitated through robust, nonlinear techniques of control. Thus, control of a perturbed satellite formation antenna array, with dual quaternion dynamics, is …

Accuracy Improvement Of Dynamic Sensors Measured Input Reconstruction Using Sliding Mode Observers, Rajesh Rayala Jayasheelareddy Jan 2022

Accuracy Improvement Of Dynamic Sensors Measured Input Reconstruction Using Sliding Mode Observers, Rajesh Rayala Jayasheelareddy

Dissertations

Sensor dynamics adversely affect the accuracy of the obtained measurement by dynamically distorting the true value. The accuracy of the measurement may be further degraded by noise/exogenous perturbations. A sensor’s accuracy and performance are improved by reconstructing the true input signal of the sensor from the distorted measurement polluted by a corruption signal or exogenous inputs using Sliding mode and Higher-order sliding mode observer (SMO/HOSMO). The proposed technique is used to reconstruct/estimate a sensor’s true signal, thereby improving the transient response and driving the estimation steady state error to zero in finite time. The proposed SMO algorithm is based on …

The Universality Of Solubility Divergence Effects In Multicomponent Liquid Mixtures, Pauline R. Norris Jan 2022

The Universality Of Solubility Divergence Effects In Multicomponent Liquid Mixtures, Pauline R. Norris

Dissertations

Critical point effects have been observed in pure fluids, ferromagnets, substitutional alloys, and in binary liquid mixtures having a miscibility gap. That these systems are disparate, while the phenomena observed are similar, serves as the basis for the statement of the Principle of Critical Point Universality, which governs all critical behavior. The effect of the critical point on solute solubility is readily observed; the solubility diverges towards infinity in the critical region. One finds in the critical region that the slope (∂ln solubility/ ∂ (1/Temperature)) of a plot of ln solubility vs 1/Temperature diverges toward infinity if only one composition …

Adaptive Element Spacing Synthesis Technique In Phased Array Antennas, Tanzeela Mitha Jan 2022

Adaptive Element Spacing Synthesis Technique In Phased Array Antennas, Tanzeela Mitha

Dissertations

Phased array antennas are widely used in a variety of military and civilian applications. For a given application, their radiation characteristics, such as the sidelobes, position of the nulls, and the main beam direction, need to be altered to enhance the array performance. To control these properties for a given requirement, the elements of phased array antennas need to be either properly excited or physically rearranged in different periodic and aperiodic configurations. However, once the position of the elements is fixed to control a single aspect of the generated pattern, it cannot simultaneously fulfill any other specification. To further alter …

Angler Catch Rates, Opinions, And Abiotic Variable Relationships In The Lower Logan River, Utah, Tyler Coleman, Jim Derito, Chris Penne, Gary Thiede, Phaedra Budy

Watershed Sciences Student Research

Summer base flows for rivers are critical for maintaining water quality, healthy fish populations, and a functional aquatic ecosystem. Low summer base flows can increase water temperatures and lower dissolved oxygen levels. These conditions can cause Brown Trout (Salmo trutta) energetic stress and result in lower angler catch. The goal of this study was to determine if low river flows and higher water temperatures influence angler catch rates of Brown Trout on the lower Logan River, Utah and to better understand angler use of the lower river. We performed a creel survey on approximately 6.4 km of the …

On Data-Driven Fatigue Damage Monitoring And Prediction In Nonlinear Mechanical Systems, He-Wen-Xuan Li Jan 2022

On Data-Driven Fatigue Damage Monitoring And Prediction In Nonlinear Mechanical Systems, He-Wen-Xuan Li

Open Access Dissertations

The hidden nature and detrimental effects on engineering structures make fatigue damage detection and monitoring essential to structural health monitoring (SHM). The advances in novel engineering materials and additive manufacturing meet the contemporary structural design requirements of finding an optimal combination of high strength, lightweight, and multiple functionalities. Such advances also allow the adaptation and exploitation of structural nonlinearity. The highly irregular dynamic response of the nonlinear structures aggravates the adverse effect of fatigue damage. It challenges the application of conventional fatigue monitoring and prognosis methods for the load interaction effects. A novel fatigue damage monitoring and prognosis framework are …

Probabilistic Vision Only Localization In Single And Multiple Mobile Robot Systems, Sarah E. Brent Jan 2022

Probabilistic Vision Only Localization In Single And Multiple Mobile Robot Systems, Sarah E. Brent

Open Access Dissertations

In this work, we address and propose solutions to the problem of localization in single and multi-robot systems using vision as the sole sensor. We first propose a study on landmark identification as a step towards a localization setup for real-world robotic swarms setup. In real world, landmark identification is often tackled as a place recognition problem through the use of computationally intensive Convolution Neural Networks. However, the components of a robotic swarm usually have limited computational and sensing capabilities that allows only for the application of relatively shallow networks that results in large percentage of recognition errors. In [1], …

Examining The Impact Of Differing Guilt Advertising Appeals On Charitable Giving Among The Generation Z Cohort, Ronald Conlin, Steven Bauer Jan 2022

Examining The Impact Of Differing Guilt Advertising Appeals On Charitable Giving Among The Generation Z Cohort, Ronald Conlin, Steven Bauer

All Faculty Open Access Publications

Generation Z (Gen Z), consisting of individuals born between 1995-2010, is an important target for nonprofits due to the cohort’s high degree of social consciousness. However, Gen Z consumers are challenging to impact via advertising appeals due to their short attention spans. Our research investigates the relative impact of advertising appeals based on reactive guilt, anticipatory guilt, and existential guilt on Gen Z students at a West Coast private university. The study fills a research gap by comparing all three types of guilt in one study and examining their effect on Gen Z vs. non-Gen Z individuals. Student groups at …
