Multimodality And The Sociality Of Literacies: Shaping First-Year Writing Students’ Literacies Through Multimodal Approaches, Jonathon Collins Jan 2022

Multimodality And The Sociality Of Literacies: Shaping First-Year Writing Students’ Literacies Through Multimodal Approaches, Jonathon Collins

Online Theses and Dissertations

The research presented here focuses on approaches to developing multimodal literacies through social semiotics, digital modes of communication, and multiliteracies. Intentionally developing these literacies opens the door for first-year writing students to build upon social discourses in which they already engage and develop new modes of meaning making outside of solely alphabetic literacy. Composition textbooks today, both traditional and Open Educational Resources (OER), become more effective in developing post-process and collaborative pedagogy writing standards when they focus on multimodal literacies and practices as outlined in this research. My research addresses both the historical precedent for multimodality in the Composition classroom …

Asking Appalachia: Appalachian English In The Writing Classroom, Rachel Nicole Hampton Jan 2022

Asking Appalachia: Appalachian English In The Writing Classroom, Rachel Nicole Hampton

Online Theses and Dissertations

This thesis combines primary and secondary research in order to make an argument about the need for better educational practices for Appalachian students. A problem is first established that, because of how Appalachian people and their culture are represented in the media, negative stereotypes are spread about those from the region who are easily identified by their use of Appalachian English. Standard English is widely taught and students are encouraged to suppress their accent and dialect in order to mediate this. However, these practices allow no room for these students to use and embrace their own language. This thesis investigates …

Communities In Conflict: A Critical Look Into Police And Deaf Interactions In Central Kentucky, Savannah Sublette

Online Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to examine historical and social patterns of audism, as expressed through criminal justice institutions, within local communities in central Kentucky. Previous research has pointed to patterns of discrimination by surveying either police or deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) people. By conducting research with members of both populations, the present study is able to explore the respective experiences and opinions on various topics, including knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), criminal justice policy and procedure, and the interaction techniques utilized by law enforcement. Themes and patterns emerge showing the disconnect between a …

Speech-Language Pathologists On The Autism Spectrum, Rebecca Freeman Barnett

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This thesis consists of three journal articles for publication that addresses three different aspects of the research that examines the state of diversity in the field of speech-language pathology (SLP) as it pertains to autistic representation and possible implications. In the first article, Demographic Analysis of Autistic Speech-Language Pathologists, the purpose was to determine the demographic differences between SLPs that identified on the autism spectrum and those that did not. A mass survey was conducted of SLPs in the states of Wisconsin, Michigan, and Ohio. It was concluded that 2.98% of SLPs self-identified on the autism spectrum. Chi-square analyses found …

Faith In Elections, Derek T. Muller Jan 2022

Faith In Elections, Derek T. Muller

Journal Articles

Americans may be suffering a crisis of faith. But not necessarily a crisis of religious faith. Instead, it is a crisis of faith in elections.

This language of faith in elections—do we have faith, are we losing faith, can we restore faith—pervades our political discourse and suggests religious imagery. Examples only scratch the surface of the language of faith in elections, democracy, and the American ideal. The language is seemingly everywhere. Words, of course, take on different meanings in different contexts. But the choice to use the word faith does appear to deliberately invoke religious imagery. Words like trust, confidence, …

The Minds Behind The Movement: The Role Of Academics In East Asia’S War Reparations Litigation, Timothy Webster Jan 2022

The Minds Behind The Movement: The Role Of Academics In East Asia’S War Reparations Litigation, Timothy Webster

Faculty Scholarship

East Asia's war compensation litigation simultaneously unites diverse regional actors (lawyers, survivors, activists) and fray international relations (as recent verdicts from South Korea attest). However, one view of the merits of these lawsuits is that they have reconfigured transnational activism in East Asia, exhumed forgotten and suppressed histories of Japanese aggression, and on occasion compensated victims of World War II. This Article highlights the role of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Taiwanese activists, lawyers and scholars in researching, filing, litigating and appealing over 80 lawsuits between 1972 and the present.

The Gdpr As Privacy Pretext And The Problem Of Co-Opting Privacy, Neil M. Richards Jan 2022

The Gdpr As Privacy Pretext And The Problem Of Co-Opting Privacy, Neil M. Richards

Scholarship@WashULaw

Privacy and data protection law's expansion brings with it opportunities for mischief as privacy rules are used pretextually to serve other ends. This Essay examines the problem of such co-option of privacy using a case study of lawsuits in which defendants seek to use the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”) to frustrate ordinary civil discovery. In a series of cases, European civil defendants have argued that the GDPR requires them to redact all names from otherwise valid discovery requests for relevant evidence produced under a protective order, thereby turning the GDPR from a rule designed to protect the fundamental …

Interdisciplinary Journal of Leadership Studies

This paper offers a conceptual portrait of leadership and a framework for exercising it in the realm of ethics. Centering Noncitizens’ Free Speech, Gregory P. Magarian Jan 2022

Centering Noncitizens’ Free Speech, Gregory P. Magarian

Scholarship@WashULaw

First Amendment law pays little attention to noncitizens’ free speech interests. Perhaps noncitizens simply enjoy the same First Amendment rights as citizens. However, ambivalent and sometimes hostile Supreme Court precedents create serious cause for concern. This Essay advocates moving noncitizens’ free speech from the far periphery to the center of First Amendment law. Professor Magarian posits that noncitizens epitomize a condition of speech inequality, in which social conditions and legal doctrines combine to create distinctive, unwarranted barriers to full participation in public discourse. First Amendment law can ameliorate speech inequality by promoting an ethos of free speech obligation, amplifying the …

Redefining “Misinformation,” “Disinformation,” And “Fake News”: Using Social Science Research To Form An Interdisciplinary Model Of Online Limited Forums On Social Media Platforms, Audrey C. Normandin Jan 2022

Redefining “Misinformation,” “Disinformation,” And “Fake News”: Using Social Science Research To Form An Interdisciplinary Model Of Online Limited Forums On Social Media Platforms, Audrey C. Normandin

Campbell Law Review

“Misinformation,” “disinformation,” and “fake news” have spread division and contention through online social media platforms, resulting in adverse effects to various areas of science, politics, and public health. This Comment takes a deeper look into the underlying motivations and beliefs behind this phenomenon by presenting a cohesive summarization of the empirical evidence gained from social science research. These terms are reclassified as “conflicting information” to deemphasize the considerations of fact or fiction and emphasize the empirical data showing these terms are social signifiers connotating “in-group” and “out-group” divisions. After developing this backdrop of social science research, the current legal proposals …

#Fintok And Financial Regulation, Nikita Aggarwal, D. Bondy Valdovinos Kaye, Christopher K. Odinet Jan 2022

#Fintok And Financial Regulation, Nikita Aggarwal, D. Bondy Valdovinos Kaye, Christopher K. Odinet

Faculty Scholarship

Social media platforms are becoming an increasingly important site for consumer finance. This phenomenon is referred to as “FinTok,” a reference to the “#fintok” hashtag that identifies financial content on TikTok, a popular social media platform. This Essay examines the new methodological possibilities for consumer financial regulation due to FinTok. It argues that FinTok content offers a novel and valuable source of data for identifying emerging fintech trends and associated consumer risks. As such, financial regulators should use FinTok content analysis—and social media content analysis more broadly—as an additional method for the supervision and regulation of consumer financial markets. The …

Love At First Touch: How Swiping Vs. Typing Changes Online Dating Decision-Making, Farhana Nusrat, Yaniu Huang, Cait Lamberton

AMTP Proceedings 2022

Online dating is one of the fastest-growing industries in the United States. Due to its increasing popularity, various dimensions of online dating have been studied in recent years. However, no research has explored how the type of digital platforms used impacts online dating. In this research, we investigate how the use of different platforms (computers vs. smartphones) can influence customers’ decision-making process in the context of online dating. Through multiple studies, we demonstrate that while using their computers (vs. smartphones) to evaluate dating profiles, customers will prioritize the inner attributes of the person (e.g., personality and compatibility). Moreover, the effect …

Exploring The Effects Of Linguistic Elements Of Social Media Corporate Apologies On Consumer Responses, Laurel Johnston Jan 2022

Exploring The Effects Of Linguistic Elements Of Social Media Corporate Apologies On Consumer Responses, Laurel Johnston

AMTP Proceedings 2022

In the current landscape of social media, consumers bring product and service failure complaints directly to brands daily. Whether such complaints are routine or hold potential for great consequence, social media’s viral nature means any brand-to-consumer interaction could become a public crisis if handled incorrectly. Corporate apologies are an effective strategy to mitigate negative audience sentiment and reduce online interactions that damage brand reputation. This study will manipulate previously identified but largely untested linguistic components of corporate apologies on Twitter, including personal greetings and closures and directives, to test their effects on consumers’ perceived apology sincerity, forgiveness, purchase intentions, and …

Automated Detection Of Vaping-Related Tweets On Twitter During The 2019 Evali Outbreak Using Machine Learning Classification, Yang Ren, Dezhi Wu, Avineet Singh, Erin Kasson, Ming Huang, Patricia Cavazos-Rehg Jan 2022

Automated Detection Of Vaping-Related Tweets On Twitter During The 2019 Evali Outbreak Using Machine Learning Classification, Yang Ren, Dezhi Wu, Avineet Singh, Erin Kasson, Ming Huang, Patricia Cavazos-Rehg

Publications

There are increasingly strict regulations surrounding the purchase and use of combustible tobacco products (i.e., cigarettes); simultaneously, the use of other tobacco products, including e-cigarettes (i.e., vaping products), has dramatically increased. However, public attitudes toward vaping vary widely, and the health effects of vaping are still largely unknown. As a popular social media, Twitter contains rich information shared by users about their behaviors and experiences, including opinions on vaping. It is very challenging to identify vaping-related tweets to source useful information manually. In the current study, we proposed to develop a detection model to accurately identify vaping-related tweets using machine …

Babel Fish: Court Interpreters In America (1790-1921), John Alcalde Jan 2022

Babel Fish: Court Interpreters In America (1790-1921), John Alcalde

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation examines court interpretation and English language fluency in US law from the Revolution to the Progressive Era. From its inception, the United States has operated with an Anglophone legal system that presumes English fluency embedded in a society that has contained an ever-evolving population of non-English speakers. Using legal records from cases with non-English speakers, I study how court interpretation evolved over the course of the long nineteenth century. The major themes that emerge from my research tell the story of how the American legal system discovered interpreters as the tool for communication with non-English speakers in the …

The Participatory Approach And Student Active Learning In Language Teaching: Language Students As Journalists And Filmmakers, Svetlana Sokolova, Andrei Rogatchevski, Kristian Bjørklund, David Henrik Lavén, Håkon Sverdrupsen Jan 2022

The Participatory Approach And Student Active Learning In Language Teaching: Language Students As Journalists And Filmmakers, Svetlana Sokolova, Andrei Rogatchevski, Kristian Bjørklund, David Henrik Lavén, Håkon Sverdrupsen

Russian Language Journal

This article contributes to two recent discussions in pedagogy and education, namely, the impact of the participatory approach (Jenkins et al., 2009; Yowell & Rhoten, 2009) on learning and the benefits of student active learning (Sokolova et al., in press; Spasova & Welsh, 2020). The participatory approach incorporates texts and tasks on the topics of interest that are relevant to students’ daily lives and potential workplaces. Student active learning builds upon the idea that “L2 learners must engage in classroom activities that allow them to be active learners rather than passive listeners” (see Nesset et al., this volume). This idea …

Russian Language Journal

The present study explores the development of a teaching treatment on discourse markers (DMs) for Italian learners of Russian as a Second Language (L2) using students in the research process. We believe that learners’ insights are a valuable resource in the design of teaching treatments tailored to learners’ needs. Both researchers and students can benefit from such cooperation when dealing with slippery aspects of spoken language, such as DMs.

Pre-Service Secondary Mathematics Teachers' Definitions Of Mathematics Terms In Their Video-Lesson Presentations: A Deductive Content Analysis, Art Walden A. Dejoras, Catherine P. Vistro-Uy

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Taking into account the nature of mathematics as an exact science and the essential role of mathematics teachers’ knowledge of fundamental mathematics definitions; the authors investigated the pre-service secondary mathematics teachers (PSMTs) knowledge of a good mathematics definition in their group video-lesson presentations related to algebra; geometry; descriptive statistics; and number theory. The quality of their definitions can provide a glimpse of their preparedness to teach mathematics at the secondary level. Drawing on Leikin and Zazkis’ (2010) framework to analyze teacher- generated definitions; and Borasi’s (1992) characterizations of a good definition; the authors developed an analytical framework to analyze a …

“The Pealing Of Stillness”: Gadamer On Georg Trakl, Ian Alexander Moore Jan 2022

“The Pealing Of Stillness”: Gadamer On Georg Trakl, Ian Alexander Moore

Philosophy Faculty Works

Addressing the place of the Austrian poet, Georg Trakl, in the philosophical hermeneutics of Hans-Georg Gadamer, this article turns in particular to Trakl’s poem “A Winter Evening” in order to unfold a sense of language in dialogue with the poet. This engagement equally becomes the occasion for Gadamer to confront Heidegger, whose own reading of Trakl becomes both an inspiration and a challenge.

The Psychology Of Hate: Moral Concerns Differentiate Hate From Dislike, Clara Pretus, Jennifer L. Ray, Yael Granot, William A. Cunningham, Jay J. Van Bavel Jan 2022

The Psychology Of Hate: Moral Concerns Differentiate Hate From Dislike, Clara Pretus, Jennifer L. Ray, Yael Granot, William A. Cunningham, Jay J. Van Bavel

Psychology: Faculty Publications

We investigated whether any differences in the psychological conceptualization of hate and dislike were simply a matter of degree of negativity (i.e., hate falls on the end of the continuum of dislike) or also morality (i.e., hate is imbued with distinct moral components that distinguish it from dislike). In three lab studies in Canada and the United States, participants reported disliked and hated attitude objects and rated each on dimensions including valence, attitude strength, morality, and emotional content. Quantitative and qualitative measures revealed that hated attitude objects were more negative than disliked attitude objects and associated with moral beliefs and …
