This is a meta-autoethnography describing the researcher’s unfocused, rhizomatic research process throughout the COVID19 pandemic. Themes explored are the COVID19 pandemic, family, death, climate change, queer love, represenation, academia, genre, and religion. The study shows how multiple scales of grief arise during the research process. I locate this method within postcolonial theory of autoethnography that seeks to diversify structures within the academic genre.
Trademark Confusion Revealed: An Empirical Analysis, Daryl Lim
Trademark Confusion Revealed: An Empirical Analysis, Daryl Lim
American University Law Review
The likelihood of confusion standard defines the scope of trademark infringement. Likelihood of confusion examines whether there is a substantial risk that consumers will be confused as to the source, identity, sponsorship, or origin of the defendants’ goods or services. This Article presents a contemporary empirical analysis of the various factors and how they interact. Conventional wisdom teaches us that courts should comprehensively traverse each factor and that likelihood of confusion cases generally require jury determination. However, the data reveals that neither is true. Instead, courts provide early off-ramps to litigants by “economizing,” and analyzing only a handful of factors …
Transplanting Anti-Suit Injunctions, Peter K. Yu, Jorge L. Contreras, Yu Yang
Transplanting Anti-Suit Injunctions, Peter K. Yu, Jorge L. Contreras, Yu Yang
American University Law Review
When adjudicating high-value cases involving the licensing of patents covering industry standards such as Wi-Fi and 5G (standards-essential patents or SEPs), courts around the world have increasingly issued injunctions preventing one party from pursuing parallel litigation in another jurisdiction (anti-suit injunctions or ASIs). In response, courts in other jurisdictions have begun to issue anti-anti-suit injunctions, or even anti-anti-anti suit injunctions, to prevent parties from hindering the proceedings in those courts. Most of these activities have been limited to the United States and Europe, but in 2020 China emerged as a powerful new source of ASIs in global SEP litigation. The …
Transformative Learning Through Oral Narrative In A Participatory Communication Context: An Inquiry Into Radio Drama-Based Training Among Zambian Caregivers Of Abused And Exploited Children, Charles Brent Madinger
Transformative Learning Through Oral Narrative In A Participatory Communication Context: An Inquiry Into Radio Drama-Based Training Among Zambian Caregivers Of Abused And Exploited Children, Charles Brent Madinger
Theses and Dissertations--Communication
This research investigates instructional narrative interventions for transformative learning among high orality reliant peoples. Two research questions asked: “Does an oral strategy of radio drama in a participatory environment lead to significant changes in knowledge and beliefs,” with a hypothesis stating there would be significant positive changes; and “When listeners experience narrative transport can it affect receptivity leading to knowledge and belief change,” and the hypothesis stated that narrative transport would correlate to higher positive responses. The mixed methods design analyzed personal experiences and survey responses of treatment group and control groups. Quantitatively I assessed a treatment group using a …
Assessing Dialogic Communication Elements In Online Emergency Communication, Lauren Bailey Cain
Assessing Dialogic Communication Elements In Online Emergency Communication, Lauren Bailey Cain
Theses and Dissertations--Communication
Social media have been identified as powerful tools for two-way crisis communication, allowing officials to reach, inform, and motivate at-risk publics during emergencies. However, government use of social media during emergencies is a relatively new area of study and is thus understudied and undertheorized, with little evidence-based guidance for online messaging strategies during emergencies. Dialogic communication theory has recently been used as a framework to investigate the utility of social media as channels for facilitating two-way, cocreational communication. This study assesses the use and impact of dialogic communication elements at each stage of the crisis and emergency risk communication model …
The Influence Of Linguistic Style: A Matched-Guise Experiment Assessing The Effects Of Source Accent, Argument Quality, And Issue Involvement On Persuasion, Sean Goatley-Soan
The Influence Of Linguistic Style: A Matched-Guise Experiment Assessing The Effects Of Source Accent, Argument Quality, And Issue Involvement On Persuasion, Sean Goatley-Soan
Theses and Dissertations--Communication
For decades, persuasion researchers have demonstrated that under certain conditions, the success of a persuasive appeal depends, at least in part, on perceptions of a source (Petty & Cacioppo, 1986; Wilson & Sherrell, 1993). In the same way, a person’s linguistic style, such as their accent, has been shown to have a powerful impact on listeners’ judgments (Dragojevic et al., 2018). However, despite many real-world persuasive settings requiring an oral component, the impact of a source’s accent on persuasion outcomes has received comparatively little empirical attention (Hosman, 2002). Moreover, few of the existing investigations use well-established theories of persuasion to …
Communicating Individual And Collective Mindfulness: Understanding Listening And Sensechecking At Work, Leanna Hartsough
Communicating Individual And Collective Mindfulness: Understanding Listening And Sensechecking At Work, Leanna Hartsough
Theses and Dissertations--Communication
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, many organizations made workplace changes, which added an additional challenge to employees’ communication. However, mindfulness may help members strengthen their workplace interactions. Mindfulness is an intentional open awareness to the present moment (Shapiro, 2009). The theoretical framework of collective mindfulness includes organizational mindfulness, which is mindfulness from a top-down approach and mindful organizing, which is a bottom-up approach to mindfulness at work. This dissertation extends research on collective mindfulness by including listening, individual mindfulness aspects, and sensemaking to examine how collective mindfulness members make meaning of changes due to COVID-19. I observed 26 meetings and interviewed …
Is This Going To Be The End? Understanding Problematic Integration Among Appalachian Patients In Colorectal Cancer Screening Navigation, Audrey Smith Bachman
Is This Going To Be The End? Understanding Problematic Integration Among Appalachian Patients In Colorectal Cancer Screening Navigation, Audrey Smith Bachman
Theses and Dissertations--Communication
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is preventable through regular screening; however, incidence and mortality rates in Appalachia are among the highest in the United States. Public health programs and interventions meant to mitigate the higher CRC burden and increase screening rates are ongoing in the U.S. and Appalachia. In continuing the efforts to reduce the burden of CRC in Appalachian communities, this dissertation uses a two-part study to investigate communication practices relative to problematic integration and health beliefs in CRC screening conversations from the perspective of both patients and patient navigators in the region. As part of efforts directed by the Rural …

Beyond Transactional Narratives Of Agency: Peer Consultants’ Antiracist Professionalization, Amy T. Cicchino, Katharine H. Brown, Christopher Basgier, Megan Haskins
The Writing Center Journal
Social justice movements, especially Black Lives Matter, inspired many writing center administrators to reflect on their commitments to antiracism and engage with antiracist professional development with their staff. However, there is continued need to study the impact antiracist professional development has on writing center consultants’ ability to practice antiracism in sessions. This article presents a predominantly white institution (PWI) writing center’s attempt to do this work, with a particular emphasis on how antiracist professional development complicates portrayals of consultant agency within the writing center. The study analyzes qualitative data collected from consultants’ reflective writing, survey, and interview responses. Results illustrate …

Women In American Pop Music: Christina Aguilera’S Impact On Cultural Narratives, Chin Wai (Rosie) Wong
Women In American Pop Music: Christina Aguilera’S Impact On Cultural Narratives, Chin Wai (Rosie) Wong
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Pop music as a mainstream medium is often more enjoyed than critically studied. Former studies and literatures point out a major issue that many American female pop music artists face. These artists are often confined in a box that reduces their full human-being attributes to a narrowed view, where their identity is portrayed in a diminishing and inaccurate way. Despite this narrowed narrative of what a woman should be, this box has become a norm that many female artists must adhere to in order to achieve mainstream success. This paper responds to this phenomenon by analyzing Christina Aguilera’s music, spanning …

Neopatrimonialism And Civil Conflict, Nick Florian
Neopatrimonialism And Civil Conflict, Nick Florian
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
The thesis examines the relationship between neopatrimonial regimes, those with institutionalized patronage networks, high levels of regime corruption, and single authoritarian leaders, and civil conflict. The primary emphasis of this research, borrowing from the understanding of horizontal inequalities among groups, is to present three theoretical mechanisms by which grievances may diffuse in a manner to mobilize resistance in non-ethnic civil conflict. This approach focuses mainly on attempting to disaggregate authoritarian regime qualities which may contribute to grievance diffusion. A current psychological understanding of ethnic conflict focuses heavily on the perception of group-grievances as a prerequisite to armed, organized conflict against …
A Phenomenological Study Exploring Arab Muslim Students At Community College And Islamophobia, Dustin French
A Phenomenological Study Exploring Arab Muslim Students At Community College And Islamophobia, Dustin French
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Arab Muslim students continue to face various forms of islamophobia on campus despite efforts from the college to make campus more welcoming and inclusive. As Muslim students express concern about the rise of islamophobia on campus and bigoted rhetoric on social media, college leaders, administration, and faculty have an imperative role to play in curbing anti-Muslim sentiments, xenophobia, and racism across campus and in the classrooms. To address these concerns effectively and meaningfully, it is important for colleges to understand who their Arab Muslim students are and the challenges they face as college students amid islamophobia. This dissertation explored how …
The Psychological Roots Of William James's Thought, David E. Leary
The Psychological Roots Of William James's Thought, David E. Leary
Psychology Faculty Publications
"... [H]ow exactly did James’s personal characteristics, experiences, and concerns impact upon his philosophy? To answer that question we will need to look further back, well before he started publishing the works for which he is best known within philosophy: before, that is, Prag-matism (1907), A Pluralistic Universe (1909), The Meaning of Truth (1909), and the posthumously collected Essays in Radical Empiricism (1912). Before and behind these works was the work that Santayana (among many others) called James’s greatest achievement (Santayana 1920/2009: 585); namely, his monumental Principles of Psychology (1890).2 So the questions we need to ask are: (1) What …

Courts As Auditors Of Legislation?, Daniel Pi, Giampaolo Frezza, Francesco Parisi
Courts As Auditors Of Legislation?, Daniel Pi, Giampaolo Frezza, Francesco Parisi
Faculty Publications
Sources of law vary greatly across geography and human history. Some legal systems identify democratic lawmaking with political deliberation, while others rely on judicial process and judge-made law. This Essay argues that the normative problem of determining a hierarchy of legal sources may be usefully understood in terms of mechanism design, and that legislation and judicial precedent operate complementarily. If the ultimate policy objective is to create legal rules that reflect the "will of the people," judge-made law can function as an audit on the rules promulgated by elected legislatures. The two sources of law, working in conjunction, thereby correct …

Spectral Cg Algorithm For Solving Fuzzy Nonlinear Equations, Mezher M. Abed, Ufuk Öztürk, Hisham M. Khudhur
Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics
The nonlinear conjugate gradient method is an effective technique for solving large-scaleminimizations problems, and has a wide range of applications in various fields, such as mathematics, chemistry, physics, engineering and medicine. This study presents a novel spectral conjugate gradient algorithm (non-linearconjugate gradient algorithm), which is derived based on the Hisham–Khalil (KH) and Newton algorithms. Based onpure conjugacy condition The importance of this research lies in finding an appropriate method to solve all types oflinear and non-linear fuzzy equations because the Buckley and Qu method is ineffective in solving fuzzy equations. Moreover, the conjugate gradient method does not need a Hessian matrix (second …

Modelling can provide intellectual frameworks that are necessary to translate data into knowledge.Mathematical modelling has played an important role in many applications, such as ecology, genetics, engineering, psychology, sociology, physics and computer science, in recent years. This study focused on reviewing mathematicalmodelling and its applications to biological systems by tracing many metabolic activities of cellular interactions onthe one hand and between the spread of epidemics and population growth on the other hand. Various mathematicalequations have played fundamental roles in the formation of these systems for model development proceduresby describing them mathematically and establishing relationships that characterise the dynamics of a biologicalphenomenon. …
