The Deletion Of The Feminine Marker In The Noble Qur’Anic Text: Readings In Trends Of Linguistic Thought, Hamdi Jabali

Journal of the Arab American University مجلة الجامعة العربية الامريكية للبحوث

This study relates to some aspects of the purposeful deletion of the Arabic feminine marker “ha’” in the Noble Qur’anic text. It has resulted in a lot of controversies among Arab grammarians and linguists which, by their turn, have indicated that the Arabic Language uses particles followed by words to serve certain purposes; however, Arabic deletes these particles in special contexts and circumstances. The researcher aimed to explore the deletion of the marker and the reasons for such a deletion in qur’anic texts only in order to collect as many linguistic features as possible of the Arabic language that allow …

Heritage Figures In Contemporary Algerian Feminist Poetry, Naima Boulkaibet Dec 2022

Heritage Figures In Contemporary Algerian Feminist Poetry, Naima Boulkaibet

Journal of the Arab American University مجلة الجامعة العربية الامريكية للبحوث

Heritage in poetry may be one of the most studied themes. It is an essential element in saving identity and singularity (uniqueness) wanted by poets in their poems. That was manifested with modernism poets who coexisted with heritage and grasped the way they can use it and the charming beauty it adds to the poem. The manifestation of using heritage in the Algerian modern poetry in general and feminist poetry in particular confirms the poet’s recognition of the historical and civilizational awareness included in their poetry by the use of heritage. This study is an exploration of the way that …

Post-Colonialism Ahmed Saadawi's "Frankenstein In Baghdad": Textual Representations And Depths And The Aftermath Phrasing, Rami Abu Shehab

Journal of the Arab American University مجلة الجامعة العربية الامريكية للبحوث

The paper aimed to examine "Frankenstein in Baghdad" by the Iraqi novelist Ahmed Saadawi. The text highlighted the impact of the neo-colonial era represented by the United States' invasion of Iraq in 2003, which launched a new stage of colonialism in the twenty-first century. The novel was able to realistically reflect that historical period in terms of the post colonialism context through an imagined text. This novel reflected some features of the post colonialism novels, especially the textual depths, representations, phrasing and effect and the possibility of achieving all these features. Therefore, the hypothesis of this study was based on …

Code-Switching In Jordanian Stand-Up Comedy A Humor Tool And A Means To Reflect Social Diversity, Ghaida Al-Quran

Journal of the Arab American University مجلة الجامعة العربية الامريكية للبحوث

This article discusses the function of code-switching in Jordanian stand-up comedy. Drawing on Hoffman (1991) and Troike (1982), analysis of twenty performances presented by Jordanian stand-up comedians revealed that the alternation between colloquial Jordanian Arabic, the dialect these performances are mainly delivered in, Standard Arabic, and sometimes English does not only emphasize the humorous role of this genre, but also reflects the social diversity among Jordanians and helps in building rapport with them regardless of their different backgrounds.

Putting The Coronavirus To Work: Developing A Global Engineering Program During A Pandemic, Cynthia S. Chalupa

Journal of International Engineering Education

In the aftermath of COVID-19 shutdowns at campuses across the U.S. in the spring of 2020, student enrollments have fallen and budgets have been severely constrained. To counteract the current and long-term repercussions of the pandemic on institutions of higher education, administrators have called for innovative program development and strategic transformation. In the past, many engineering and world languages departments may have considered the task of creating a collaborative degree program insurmountable or undesirable despite existing models that are successful (e.g. University of Rhode Island’s IEP program). In the era of COVID-19, however, innovative programs combining language with disciplines outside …

Esther Inglis: A Franco-Scottish Jacobean Writer And Her Octonaries Upon The Vanitie And Inconstancie Of The World, Jamie Reid Baxter

Studies in Scottish Literature

This article draws attention to the hitherto ignored poetry of the Franco-Scottish Jacobean calligrapher and limner, Esther Inglis (c.1570 -1624). Inglis is the subject of a fast growing body of published scholarship, but though she left a small body of original prose and verse, she has been given no place in Scottish literature. The article falls into six sections. The substantial first section notes first that to date, there has been a tendency to shy away from dealing with her as a writer, and that Inglis’s formative Scottish background has been largely ignored. The second section looks at Inglis and …

Health Policy & Community Health: Faculty Publications

Increasing evidence demonstrates that an online Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) can delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. However, little has been done for Chinese Americans. This study, using Community-Based Participatory Research and Intervention Mapping approaches, describes a formative research process in the development of a culturally and linguistically tailored online DPP program among Chinese Americans with prediabetes living in New York City. Using a triangulation approach, data were collected to inform the development of an online DPP curriculum through (1) a literature review, (2) three focus groups (n = 24), and (3) a community advisory board meeting among 10 …

Socio-Cultural Status Of Albinism In Africa: Challenging Myths, Concepts, And Stereotypes, Raita Steyn

Journal of Global Awareness

This article analyses the socio-cultural status of Albinism in Africa and the role unchallenged stereotypes, irrational concepts, and unfounded beliefs play in the lives of persons with albinism. Following some beliefs, persons with albinism” do not die but vanish” to later “return as ghosts to haunt the living.” The author discusses this paradox about persons with albinism identified as hunted victims and simultaneously haunting perpetrators. The research examines the concept of albinism being a curse from dead ancestors or theodicy and its association with supernatural powers. By a comparative and diachronic approach, the study challenges unsubstantiated stereotypes. This study aims …

“Superior Honor And Dignity” : A Critical Discourse Analysis Of The Relationship Between Linguistic Strategies And Ideologies In The Automobile Business, Siravast Kavilanan Dec 2022

“Superior Honor And Dignity” : A Critical Discourse Analysis Of The Relationship Between Linguistic Strategies And Ideologies In The Automobile Business, Siravast Kavilanan

Journal of Letters

This article examines the relationship between linguistic strategies and ideologies of superior honor and dignity in the automobile business. These relationships are identified using critical discourse analysis based on the three-dimensional framework of Fairclough (1995). Results show that the linguistic strategies used to construct these ideologies include lexical selection, presupposition, negation, claiming and reference. This discourse also indicates that while consumers may recognize the importance of cars, as an automobile business, profits are also important. As a result, automobile companies have constructed discourses to manipulate people to recognize that cars are not just vehicles, but indicators of social status that …

The Syntax Of Answers To Positive Polar Questions In Jordanian Arabic, Osama Omari, Hadeel Mohammad, Aziz Jaber, Mujdey Abudalbuh Dec 2022

The Syntax Of Answers To Positive Polar Questions In Jordanian Arabic, Osama Omari, Hadeel Mohammad, Aziz Jaber, Mujdey Abudalbuh

Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب

Responses to a polar question have recently received much attention in the syntactic literature (e.g., Yaisomanag, 2012 on Thi; Wu, 2016 on Taiwanese, Servidio et al., 2018 on Italian; among others). However, the syntax of yes-no questions in Arabic has been undermined in the literature. The present study provides a syntactic analysis of answers to positive/neutral polar questions in Jordanian Arabic. Jordanian Arabic is particularly relevant here because its system allows for a variety of answer expressions. For example, an answer to a polar question could be in the form of a particle (a: ‘yes’ and laʔ ‘no’) or a …

The Concept Of Text From The Perspective Of Heritage And Modernity: Its Impact On Formulating The Theory Of A Literary Text, Noureldeen Saddar, Khaled Bani Domy

Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب

This research aims to discuss the problem of the textual concept in the Arab critical heritage and the Western critical thought and to show its impact on formulating the contemporary literary textual theory. It is the problem that stems from the assumption that Arab critical thought has originated in the components of this theory, which we find have roots and references in our critical, literary, rhetorical and philosophical heritage. Hence, the textual theory in the contemporary critical thought is an extension of this legacy, benefiting from the achievements of philosophers, linguists and critics, and the achievements of contemporary critical approaches. …

Language Representation Of Archetypic Concepts In The Light Of Intercultural Communication, Ibrahim Al–Shaboul, Iryna Kushnir

Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب

This article analyzes linguocultural units from the standpoint of cognitive linguistic. The concept is defined as a set of verbalized and non-verbalized images of objects and situations that form the conceptual sphere of a person; it recognizes the national, social, group and individual specificity of the content and structure of concepts. In order to describe the value semantics of the concept as a fragment of the language picture of the world of native speakers (Russian, Ukrainian, Arabic) and representatives of the relevant culture, such linguistic means of expression are analyzed: nominees, attributes, derivatives, phraseological units (including paroimyas), aphorisms. Acquisition Of The Liaison In French As A Foreign Language: Difficulty And Remedy, Saad Haddad Dec 2022

Acquisition Of The Liaison In French As A Foreign Language: Difficulty And Remedy, Saad Haddad

Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب

“Liaison is a phenomenon that aroused and continues to arouse a large number of researchers' interest because of its complexity and diversity. The studies on this subject often concern when and how different native and non-native speakers perform or do not perform the liaison in French. The difficulty posed by the phenomenon of liaison is even more evident among non-native speakers for whom such correspondence does not exist in the mother tongue”. (Mårtensson, 2013 : p 3). This study aims to map the difficulties of liaison encountered by Arabic-speaking learners in French as a Foreign language class. The results of …

Cesaire's Tempest Writes Back To The Empire, Sawsan Ahmad Daraiseh, Nancy Habis Al-Doghmi, Banan Ahmad Daraiseh

Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب

Aimé Césaire, who lived the experience of colonialism, wrote back to Shakespeare’s play The Tempest in a play of his own, which he called A Tempest. Unlike notions of A Tempest as a simplistic writing back, the current research reveals A Tempest as a sophisticated play in which Césaire uses his own creative methods, some of which incorporate the colonizer and others the colonized, to write back to the Empire which Shakespeare represents well and reflects. This research performs a deep analysis of A Tempest, revealing the voice of the Other as enabled; arguing with and disabling The Tempest’s deep …

It investigates the politeness strategies employed by staff when they give their directives to hotel foreign guests. The data were collected through audiorecording interactions that occurred between the staff, who are nonnative speakers of English, and foreign guests. Findings from the study show that the directives issued by the staff are characterized by significant directness. The study argues that such directives can be perceived as blunt and discourteous and therefore capable of causing face-threat to the interactants. This principally refers to the fact that they appear …

The Phenomenon Of Arabic Poetry Embellishments Among Poets & Narrators Up To The 4th Century Ah, Mohammad Alzoubi Dec 2022

The Phenomenon Of Arabic Poetry Embellishments Among Poets & Narrators Up To The 4th Century Ah, Mohammad Alzoubi

Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب

Many single narrations of one and the same line of old Arabic poetry, especially the Pre-Islamic, are not different because of lapses of memory as commonly thought. In fact, they are often due to intentional attempts on part of the narrators in question to introduce some improvements, starting from Pre-Islamic poetry up to the age of documentation of such earlier poems. Based on recurrent news of such attempts or even, sometimes, documented confessions of these attempts, the present research adopts a comparative analytical approach, along with the citation of other new examples of the abovementioned attempts. Indeed, these improvements or …

Research collaboration has become a major research topic in the social sciences. While this literature has mainly focused on collaborative dynamics in the Global North, more recent studies have examined these dynamics within the Global South. This article expands the scope of analysis by comparing the level of co-publications by Global South-based scholars with Global South-based colleagues and that between academics at Global South institutions and researchers in Global North universities. It shows that academic partnerships within the Global South are less common than instances of collaboration between the Global South and Global North. The relatively weak Global South collaborative …

Preparing Future School Counselors To Work With English Language Learners, Jennifer S. Watkinson, Qi Shi, Hope Slezak, Rachel Litvin

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

English Language Learners (ELLs) are one of the fastest growing student groups in the United States, yet school counselors often feel unprepared to address their unique needs. To better prepare school counselors to work with ELLs, counselor educators can integrate experiential learning activities that are grounded practice. Yet, little is known about the types of work experiences school counselors encounter when working with ELL students. This phenomenological study described the experiences of eight, first year school counselors who work with ELLs. Findings inform the types of training scenarios counselor educators can use to prepare school counselors-in-training (SCIT) to work with …

Mathematics Anxiety: Identity Work In A Gifted Prospective Elementary Teacher’S Mathematics-Related Personal Narratives, Kathleen Jablon Stoehr

Teacher Education

Previous studies have focused on negative physiological sensations and psychological emotions of mathematics anxiety experienced in real time. Similarly, prior research has noted that prospective elementary teachers (PSTs) may experience such feelings of distress while learning to teach mathematics in their teacher-preparation programs. Mathematics teacher educators have sought to reduce elementary PSTs’ mathematics anxiety by improving their mathematical content knowledge and discipline-specific pedagogical knowledge. But why might mathematics anxiety persist even after elementary PSTs have successfully completed such teacher-preparation coursework? Our case study of a female elementary PST, identified as gifted, illustrates how mathematics anxiety, when reinforced by personal narratives …

Fighting Words: Catalonia At The Language Instruction Crossroads, Jane Tien Dec 2022

Fighting Words: Catalonia At The Language Instruction Crossroads, Jane Tien

Duke Journal of Comparative & International Law

The schism between Spain and Catalonia obscures a struggle over the teaching language for non-linguistic subjects in Catalonia's public schools. The recent two decades decanted into Catalan society two Spanish Constitutional Court rulings mandating a Castilian-Catalan conjunctive instruction model—with Catalan as the "center of gravity"—and tasking the Catalan legislature with configuring that "center." Pleasing none and spurned by all, the Constitutional Court duology emboldened activist lower courts to bypass the Catalan legislature, while schools in Catalonia continued to teach almost exclusively in Catalan. With the Castilians alienated and the Catalans defiant, language instruction in Catalonia turned into a festering wound …

Plymouth Business School

The current world business environment is characterized by increasing uncertainties, complexities, and risks, which require agri-food supply chain (AFSC) managers to respond and act quickly in a context full of instability and unpredictability. Increasing pressure placed on AFSC managers intensifies the need to combine knowledge management (KM) and decision support that rapidly overcome knowledge boundaries. It has been recognized that the research issue related to the knowledge mobilization crossing boundaries in the AFSC needs to be addressed. This paper investigates knowledge boundaries and boundary-spanning mechanisms by collecting data from experienced AFSC practitioners. Empirical results verify that knowledge boundaries such as …
