Rich Vein Or Fools Gold?, Morgan Deane Jan 2022

Rich Vein Or Fools Gold?, Morgan Deane

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Proclaim Peace is the first full-length volume discussing nonviolent theology in Latter-day Saint thought. It seeks to provide a new understanding of Restoration texts that aligns Mormon thought with modern pacifist traditions. Unfortunately, the book suffers from methodology issues that include an overly creative reading of some scriptures to support pacifist theories and the minimization of others’ theories. The book fails to interact with just-war ethics in meaningful ways that could enhance their ethic of peace. As a result, the book is longer than other pacifist texts but suffers from the same problems as previous entries in talking past those …

Culture And Fair Use, Michael P. Goodyear Jan 2022

Culture And Fair Use, Michael P. Goodyear

Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal

The intersections of race and copyright have been underexamined in legal scholarship, despite repeated calls for further scrutiny. The scholarship has so far focused primarily on identifying where copyright has fallen short in protecting the creative works of artists of color. This Article, instead, hopes to offer one viable solution for creating more inclusivity of different cultures in copyright: the approval of cultural adaptations under fair use.

Cultural adaptations—the transformation of preexisting works to reflect the cultural and social mores and norms of a different group—would appear at first glance to be prohibited as derivative works, which, under the Copyright …

The Incompatibility Of Artificial Intelligence And Citizens United, Michael R. Siebecker Jan 2022

The Incompatibility Of Artificial Intelligence And Citizens United, Michael R. Siebecker

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

In Citizens United v. FEC, the Supreme Court granted corporations essentially the same political speech rights as human beings. But does the growing prevalence of artificial intelligence (“AI”) in directing the content and dissemination of political communications call into question the jurisprudential soundness of such a commitment? Would continuing to construe the corporation as a constitutional rights bearer make much sense if AI entities could wholly own and operate business entities without any human oversight? Those questions seem particularly important, because in the new era of AI, the nature and practices of the modern corporation are quickly evolving. The magnitude …

Principled Practice For Drama And Theater Arts With Multilingual Learners, Sergio L. Sanchez, Steven Z. Athanases Jan 2022

Principled Practice For Drama And Theater Arts With Multilingual Learners, Sergio L. Sanchez, Steven Z. Athanases

Benerd College Faculty Articles

All disciplines have particular ways of knowing, common practices, and means of using language that mediate and potentially support engagement with the discipline. For multilingual learners, language demands of a discipline can be a closed door or a facilitated entryway. Drama and theater arts, the focus of our article, are often marginalized in curricula across the grades and therefore receive less attention to relevant disciplinary activities and language demands. In response to this pattern, our paper has several aims. We highlight ways language demands are embedded in drama and theater arts curricula and activities. Second, we describe and analyze ways …

Developmental Language Disorder: A Literature Review, Laura M. Gaudette Jan 2022

Developmental Language Disorder: A Literature Review, Laura M. Gaudette

The Graduate Review

Developmental language disorder (DLD) is a life-long language condition characterized by difficulty using, learning, and understanding language across modalities (speaking, writing, reading) despite average cognitive and intellectual skills. There is no single cause of DLD, though research suggests a genetic component and environmental factors act as possible predictors. Although there is an incidence rate of around 2-3 students in each class of 30, DLD has very little awareness and is significantly under-researched. There are many factors contributing to this. Most notably, DLD is considered a hidden disability as many people learn to mask their symptoms pretty early in life through …

Artistic Sensibility Is Inherent To Research, Benjamin Charles Ingman Jan 2022

Artistic Sensibility Is Inherent To Research, Benjamin Charles Ingman

Center for Rural School Health and Education: Faculty Scholarship

Artistic sensibility is defined in this work as the sensitivity and capacity to appreciate and act upon concerns of or pertaining to art and its production. This article contends that artistic sensibility is inherent to research. This contention is supported through three points which reveal a fourth: (1) Research requires dissemination. (2) Dissemination requires representation. (3) Representation requires artistic sensibility. These three points considered in conjunction illustrate a fourth: (4) Research requires artistic sensibility. This argument has implications for research venues, evaluations of research, and the preparation of researchers in all research disciplines. Namely, certain tenets of arts-based research may …

Building A Global Community: An Intercultural Communication Perspective, Guo-Ming Chen Jan 2022

Building A Global Community: An Intercultural Communication Perspective, Guo-Ming Chen

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Built on the author's previous work, this paper lays down a theoretical framework for building a global community from an intercultural communication perspective. The rapid development of new media in recent decades has accelerated globalization and transformed human society into a highly interconnected place through changing the way people think and interact. This indicates that a global society is gradually emerging due to the convergence of new media and globalization trend in the 21st century. However, the emergence of a global society does not necessarily mean that a new sense of community will follow. This paper calls for using "community" …

Lehi, Joseph, And The Kingdom Of Israel, Richley Crapo Jan 2022

Lehi, Joseph, And The Kingdom Of Israel, Richley Crapo

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

I present evidence of two priesthoods in the Jewish Bible: an Aaronite priesthood, held by Aaron and passed down through his descendants; and a higher Mushite priesthood, held not only by Moses and his descendants but also by other worthy individuals, such as Joshua, an Ephraimite. The Mushite priests were centered in Shiloh, where Joshua settled the Ark of the Covenant, while the Aaronites became dominant in the Jerusalem temple. Like Joshua, the prophet Lehi, a descendant of the northern tribe of Manasseh, held the higher priesthood. His ministry, as recounted in the Book of Mormon, demonstrates four characteristics that …

Translanguaging, Multilingualism, And Multimodality In Children's Mathematics Learning, Cristina Valencia Mazzanti Jan 2022

Translanguaging, Multilingualism, And Multimodality In Children's Mathematics Learning, Cristina Valencia Mazzanti

Education and Child Study: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this qualitative research study is to portray the complex language practices of multilingual children when learning mathematics. To do so, I draw on data collected as part of a three-year research study that was designed to understand the relationship between young children’s language use and mathematics learning, focusing on students’ work as well as interactions collected through research journal entries and audio recordings. I center the practice of thick description as a path to advance disruptive understanding of multimodal representations of children’s language use while learning mathematics. I then consider the necessary movement from a preconceived understanding …

Disparities In Awareness Of And Willingness To Participate In Cancer Clinical Trials Between African American And White Cancer Survivors, Gaurav Kumar, Jungyoon Kim, Paraskevi A. Farazi, Hongmei Wang, Dejun Su Jan 2022

Disparities In Awareness Of And Willingness To Participate In Cancer Clinical Trials Between African American And White Cancer Survivors, Gaurav Kumar, Jungyoon Kim, Paraskevi A. Farazi, Hongmei Wang, Dejun Su

Journal Articles: Epidemiology

BACKGROUND: Cancer clinical trials (CCTs) are essential for cancer care, yet the evidence is scarce when it comes to racial disparities in CCT participation among cancer survivors in the Midwest. This study aimed to 1) assess disparities in the awareness of and willingness to participate in CCTs between African American and White cancer survivors; and 2) compare perceptions about CCTs between the two racial groups.

METHODS: The study was based on cross-sectional data from the survey "Minority Patient Participation in Cancer Clinical Trials" that collected information from 147 Black and White cancer survivors from Nebraska between 2015 and 2016. Chi-square …

Physiological Indicators Of Menstrual Cycle Phase: A Two-Part Study On Developing A Method Of Menstrual Cycle Phase Determination And Assessment Of Menstrual Cycle Impacts On Brain Activation, Anna Feldbush Jan 2022

Physiological Indicators Of Menstrual Cycle Phase: A Two-Part Study On Developing A Method Of Menstrual Cycle Phase Determination And Assessment Of Menstrual Cycle Impacts On Brain Activation, Anna Feldbush

Theses & ETDs

The menstrual cycle, and associated variations in hormone status, are a powerful moderator of both behavioral and physiological variables. However, current methods of determining menstrual cycle phase in research are largely unreliable and often cumbersome to put to use in a study. This two-part study examined two bio-markers of menstrual cycle phase for the application in research. Study 1 assessed the viability of salivary ferning - a crystal pattern formed in dried saliva that is linked to ovarian hormone status -- in identifying menstrual cycle phase. The two sampling types used in this study demonstrated that although salivary ferning patterns …

I Too Can Create Desolation: Terror And Culture Through Frankenstein, Elliot Golden Jan 2022

I Too Can Create Desolation: Terror And Culture Through Frankenstein, Elliot Golden

Theses & ETDs

Anne Radcliffe’s work “On the Supernatural In Poetry” put into words an idea based in the early 19th century’s focus on gothic horror of the difference between terror and horror as literary concepts. This difference reflects into the most prominent work to emerge from this gothic horror period, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Within Shelley’s work, terror is formed through depictions of loneliness. Shelley’s concept of the Frankenstein’s monster carrie’s over into other cultures as well, adapting the premise to demonstrate ideas of terror relevant within their differing social fears. Ahmed Saadawi’s novel Frankenstein in Baghdad uses the format to demonstrate terrors …

Indigenous Aesthetics And Post-Revolutionary Nationalism: Defining Mexicanidad Through The Popular Arts And The Best-Maugard Method, Katie Margerison Jan 2022

Indigenous Aesthetics And Post-Revolutionary Nationalism: Defining Mexicanidad Through The Popular Arts And The Best-Maugard Method, Katie Margerison

Theses & ETDs

After the Mexican Revolution ended in 1920, President Álvaro Obregón (1920-1924) enacted a national reconstruction plan that aimed to establish a unified national identity through visual culture. The plan foregrounded efforts toward the cultural inclusion and integration of Mexico’s substantial yet marginalized indigenous population. Through a variety of government-sponsored events, initiatives, and educational programs related to the visual arts, Obregón sought to unify the nation by promoting indigenous culture as integral to Mexican identity. In this thesis, I examine the key ways in which Obregón’s administration was involved in popularizing indigenous aesthetics and integrating them into modern Mexican culture, while …

Performance As A Means Of Corporate Persuasion- An Elizabeth Holmes Case Study, Aleah Colon Alfonso Jan 2022

Performance As A Means Of Corporate Persuasion- An Elizabeth Holmes Case Study, Aleah Colon Alfonso

Theses & ETDs

This thesis utilizes a lens of performance to conduct a comprehensive case study of Elizabeth Holmes, a once world-renowned entrepreneur who used persuasion to defraud investors and create a company valued at $9 billion. Goffman’s model of self-presentation as performance is used as the overarching framework through which Holmes and her use of performance in corporate settings is explored. This thesis presents a literature review which details performance and its ability to persuade others, the role of corporate theatre in business leaders, entrepreneurial persuasion and business success, and how gendered self-presentation affects entrepreneurship. The methods section delineates how grounded theory …

Modern Art As Propaganda: Vera Mukhina's Soviet Pavilion Sculpture At The 1937 International Exhibition, Cecile "C" De Zotti Jan 2022

Modern Art As Propaganda: Vera Mukhina's Soviet Pavilion Sculpture At The 1937 International Exhibition, Cecile "C" De Zotti

Theses & ETDs

Since 1851, international exhibitions have impacted millions with their awe-inducing splendor and gigantic displays of cultural and technological innovations. The 1937 iteration stands out from the crowd for the strong political implications of its displays as World War II loomed in the future, especially the tense confrontation between the German and Soviet Pavilions. This thesis considers how the U.S.S.R. used this event as an opportunity to propagate an idealized image of itself to the rest of the world via Vera Mukhina’s Industrial Worker and Collective Farm Woman, which crowned the Soviet pavilion. It more specifically examines how this sculpture functioned …

Conceptual Metaphor Games An Embodied Approach To Mathematics Pedagogy, Laura Perkins Jan 2022

Conceptual Metaphor Games An Embodied Approach To Mathematics Pedagogy, Laura Perkins

Theses & ETDs

In the theory of embodied cognition, mathematical activity is thought to be facili- tated in large part by epistemic “mappings” that translate bodily intuitions about the world into abstract conceptual domains. Since their popularization, these ideas have influenced discourse in mathematics education. Another currently popular topic in mathematics education is the growing evidence that learning games can enhance learning outcomes. Combining these facts, this work proposes to construct real- world or virtual games which directly map onto mathematical concepts via concep- tual metaphors. Games of this kind, which I dub conceptual metaphor games, intend to encourage learning as exploration, making …

Pediatric Heavy Metal Toxicity: A Systematic Review Of The Association Between In-Utero Exposure To Heavy Metals And Behavioral/Neurological Problems In The Affected Children, Isabella Hochburger Jan 2022

Pediatric Heavy Metal Toxicity: A Systematic Review Of The Association Between In-Utero Exposure To Heavy Metals And Behavioral/Neurological Problems In The Affected Children, Isabella Hochburger

Theses & ETDs

The rates of children diagnosed with developmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have exponentially increased over the last 20 years, which has placed a heavy burden on both caregivers and psychiatrists. The neurobiology of these disorders has been increasingly well studied, but the root causes of these disorders remain poorly understood by the neuroscience/psychiatric community. Most neuroscientists suggest a combination of genetic and environmental factors are to blame, but the question remains: why are these disorders becoming so prevalent in our society, now more than ever before? One proposed genetic-environmental factor is heavy …

Automated Modernization Of Shakespearean English: Using Natural Language Processing To Capture Writing Style, Austin Lopresto Jan 2022

Automated Modernization Of Shakespearean English: Using Natural Language Processing To Capture Writing Style, Austin Lopresto

Theses & ETDs

This thesis explores the field of Text Style Transfer using Natural Language Process- ing techniques. This task falls into the larger topic of Text Attribute Transfer, a field also encompassing closely-related tasks such as Machine Translation and Paraphrase Generation. Where style transfer differs from these existing tasks is that it focuses on trying to capture the more fine-grained aspects of writing such as diction and semantic syntax. The goal of this thesis is to explore some of the fundamental topics in Natu- ral Language Processing necessary for the understanding of Attribute Transfer tasks. These topics include text normalization techniques, tokenization …

Making Waves: Blackness And Transnational Racialized Self-Fashioning By South Korean Hip-Hop Artists, Gwen Roberts Jan 2022

Making Waves: Blackness And Transnational Racialized Self-Fashioning By South Korean Hip-Hop Artists, Gwen Roberts

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines a selection of songs by various mainstream Korean hip-hop artists to understand how they perform Blackness in a transnational context. This research employs a qualitative content analysis of song lyrics from twenty-four songs selected through both convenience and purposeful sampling. The songs examined are from thirty-nine hip-hop artists, both Korean and Korean-American/Canadian, who self-identified as Korean hip-hop artists. Along with supplemental theories, Marc D. Perry's "self-fashioning" (2008) and Geoff Harkness' "situational authenticity" (2012) are central theoretical frameworks in this thesis. The findings from the content analysis are organized into four themes: linguistics, culture/positionality, conventions, and class status. …

Deconstructing The Viking Archetype: The Erasure Of Marginalized Groups From Viking History, Leviathan Fisher Jan 2022

Deconstructing The Viking Archetype: The Erasure Of Marginalized Groups From Viking History, Leviathan Fisher

Theses & ETDs

In the most authoritative early works on Viking history, there is a notable lack of discussion about Vikings that were nonwhite, queer, or gender nonconforming. These texts, nineteenth and early twentieth century creations of European/American men, instead focused on the interests of their authors: other Anglo-European men. The erasure of marginalized groups from the literature ensured that these groups were not a part of the Viking revival that introduced physical stereotypes to the public consciousness, and as a result Victorian popular culture crystallized the image of Vikings as blonde-haired, blue- eyed, cisgender-heterosexual, and white. This same image remains in modern …

Complications With Historical Production: American History, Bias, And Latine Representation, Gabriela Ott Jan 2022

Complications With Historical Production: American History, Bias, And Latine Representation, Gabriela Ott

Theses & ETDs

This thesis aims to investigate how American history professors’ attitudes relate to the texts assigned to their students and how these readings portray Latines. Past research indicates that historical production of history narratives have been impacted by national identity, linguistic choices, instructors’ perspectives, and prejudice. These key ideas in historical narrative creation can have psychological ramifications for Latine students, such as stereotype threat or transmission, self-esteem alteration, personal disengagement, and lowered sense of belonging. The study examined six American history professors’ syllabi and survey results to see how Latines were represented in assigned readings and if there was a connection …

Pluralism In Political Time: A Theory Of Political Transition, Angela Kothe Jan 2022

Pluralism In Political Time: A Theory Of Political Transition, Angela Kothe

Theses & ETDs

The Liberal Party of Canada has governed for 78 of the past 110 years. Current analyses of Liberal success tend to focus on the impact of population distribution, and fail to adequately explain how the Party has continued to succeed despite electoral losses and changes in electorate composition. To explore the origins of party success and failures, I form a theory that ties long-term success to cultural accommodation and electoral losses to conflict. I will use the implications of this theory to test two hypotheses with a regression analysis of electoral districts from 1997 to 2019. The results demonstrate that …

Fluchtpunkt Magdeburg: Documentation Of An Integration-Oriented Theater Project From The Perspective Of Theater Pedagogy And Language Didactics, Mona Eikel-Pohen, Sarah Dolbier

Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics - All Scholarship

Based on Dwight Conquergood's key concepts of play, power, process, and poetics/language, this paper documents the theater-pedagogical model project Fluchtpunkt Magdeburg 2015 to2019, in which young people with and without refugee experiences living in Magdeburg, Germany, developed three plays and a film under dance- and theater-pedagogical direction with the pronounced goal of promoting social and linguistic integration. The aim of this documentation is to systematically describe the project and to identify successful elements that make future projects sustainable and feasible for planning and implementation in the long term.

Toward Equitable And Inclusive School Practices: Expanding Approaches To "Research With" Young People, Alison Cook-Sather Jan 2022

Toward Equitable And Inclusive School Practices: Expanding Approaches To "Research With" Young People, Alison Cook-Sather

Education Program Faculty Research and Scholarship

This commentary links child-family research to the systematic inquiry approaches under the umbrellas of student voice and youth participatory action research. It reviews the underlying premises of the latter two bodies of work, including recognizing young people as knowers, partners, and change agents through conducting research with rather than on children and youth. It highlights how the articles included in this special issue challenge us to consider literacy not simply as a language competency but also as a life capacity that must be developed in relationship and in real, sometimes devastating, and always complex, human circumstances. The commentary concludes with …
