First-Year Experience Course Impact On Undergraduate International Student Retention And Graduation, Dylan Rust, Raghvendra Singh
First-Year Experience Course Impact On Undergraduate International Student Retention And Graduation, Dylan Rust, Raghvendra Singh
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
As institutions look to improve student retention through first-year experience (FYE) courses, some have implemented courses targeted specifically to the international population. A quantitative comparison of international students who took an FYE course with international students who did not take an FYE course was completed to analyze the differences in retention and graduation rates between the two groups. International freshmen who participated in the FYE course were retained and graduated at significantly higher rates than international freshmen who did not take the course. Aspects of the course that likely led to student retention and graduation are discussed.

The Rice Theory Of Culture, Thomas Talhelm
The Rice Theory Of Culture, Thomas Talhelm
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
The rice theory of culture is the idea that rice farming societies developed into more interdependent, tight cultures in response to the demands of the plant. Farming in general is an interdependent subsistence style, but traditional paddy rice farming was starkly different from other major crops like wheat, corn, and potatoes. Paddy rice required twice as much labor per hectare as wheat farming. Farmers responded by creating customs to share labor. Paddy rice also depended on irrigation systems to flood and drain the fields. Once farmers controlled water, they now had to coordinate how much water each farmer got, when …
Implicit Motives Across Cultures, Jan Hofer, Athanasios Chasiotis
Implicit Motives Across Cultures, Jan Hofer, Athanasios Chasiotis
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
In recent years, methodological and substantial progress has been made in the field of cross-cultural studies on implicit motives. We propose that cross-cultural studies on implicit motives are indispensable to understand universal and culture-specific variations in individuals’ mental processes and behavior. It is assumed that implicit motives represent the first motivational system to be shaped in a human being’s ontogeny and that they have far-reaching consequences for individuals’ development, their feelings and actions in everyday life across different cultural groups. Applying psychometrically sound measurements cross-culturally, researchers have revealed a number of universal relationships between implicit motives and psychological and behavioral …
Johannine Mariology In John 2: 1-11 And Jn 19: 25-27, Azam Mansha
Johannine Mariology In John 2: 1-11 And Jn 19: 25-27, Azam Mansha
Loyola Papers
This paper explores Johannine Mariology through an exegetical study of John 2:1–11 and John 19:25–27, highlighting Mary’s evolving role within the Fourth Gospel. It examines the symbolic and theological significance of Mary as “woman,” linking her to the figure of Zion and the new people of God. At Cana, she emerges as the first believer who mediates faith and points others to Jesus, while at the Cross, she is entrusted with a maternal role in the formation of the believing community. The study underscores Mary’s discipleship, faith, and representative function within the Johannine vision of salvation history.
Fusing Approaches In Educational Research: Data Collection And Data Analysis In Phenomenological Research, Pedro P. Aguas
Fusing Approaches In Educational Research: Data Collection And Data Analysis In Phenomenological Research, Pedro P. Aguas
The Qualitative Report
One of the aims of human sciences seeks to understand the essences and meanings of human experiences by focusing on philosophical, epistemological, methodological, and linguistic principles through transcendental phenomenology and hermeneutics, two philosophies and research methodologies central to qualitative research. Therefore, fusing approaches provides a space where both epistemology and methodology within both traditions can merge to yield meaning and understanding, and at the same time, offer a new approach to dealing with data collection and data analysis without neglecting or distorting original leading concepts. Fusing approaches comes into being as the merging of overlapping and deferring epistemological, methodological, and …

Borders And Migration (Pols 31) Syllabus, Osman Balkan
Borders And Migration (Pols 31) Syllabus, Osman Balkan
Aydelotte Curricular Grants
This course offers an introduction to the causes and consequences of international migration and examines how various countries have responded to it. We begin by considering the myriad reasons why people move from one place to another and analyze the different strategies through which political authorities have tried to simultaneously facilitate and obstruct migratory flows. The tension between mobility and containment is a central feature of migration politics.
Our first set of readings offer a broad, historical overview of the relationship between states and migrants within the dynamics of global capitalism. Students will learn about patterns of regular and irregular …

The Relationship Between Sleep Quality And Social Media Content, Isaac Moskowitz
The Relationship Between Sleep Quality And Social Media Content, Isaac Moskowitz
Psychology Honors Papers
The present study investigated the relationship between social media posting behavior and sleep quality in a population of college students (N = 30) over 5 nights. Sleep duration and number of nightly disruptions were used to measure sleep quality using a smartphone app, SleepScore, that participants downloaded prior to the study. Every day after recording their sleep participants were presented with a “prompt word” and asked to make a post related to their respective prompt on the anonymous social media network Yik-Yak. A content analysis was then performed with the assistance of an independent coder in order to categorize the …

The Mushroom, The Frog, And The Rainbow Of Desire: A Participatory-Psychedelic Spiritual Emergence, Gregg Lahood
The Mushroom, The Frog, And The Rainbow Of Desire: A Participatory-Psychedelic Spiritual Emergence, Gregg Lahood
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive
This article will explore a spiritual emergency through a myth or fairy tale that emerged at the same time I had a frightening brush with death. Two days before the accident I had ingested psilocybin mushrooms. Michael Washburn, among other transpersonal theorists, will be used to interpret, amplify and re-frame this potential ‘psychotic episode’ with ‘borderline features’ into something more, perhaps, on the threshold of a shamanic initiation in a liminal state. The mythic sequence in my story anticipates the death-rebirth (perinatal pattern) and evolution of consciousness in the LSD research of Stanislav Grof; an evolution given epic participatory elucidation …
How Perception Meets Hermeneutics: An Empirical Investigation Of Tasseography, Elizabeth Avetisian
How Perception Meets Hermeneutics: An Empirical Investigation Of Tasseography, Elizabeth Avetisian
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive
Tasseography is a divination method to provide insight about the seeker’s past, present, or future life by interpreting patterns in the dregs of a liquid. Although it has been practiced with coffee throughout Europe and Middle East, particularly among women, no known studies exist on the seer’s perceptual process of the ambiguous patterns or how the roles of the seeker and seer, symbols, ritual, and cultural epistemology shape the divinatory hermeneutics. This study focused on the Armenian coffee divination ritual, asking what are the processes and conditions that enable experienced cup readers to obtain divinatory insight in tasseography? Two seekers …
Cultural Wealth: A Legacy To Actualize College Goals And Aspirations For Black First-Generation College Students From African Or Caribbean Immigrant Homes, Amina Gordon
Theses and Dissertations
National data reveals that college access is most challenging for traditionally underrepresented students, including minoritized, first-generation college attendees and students from low-income families (Gibbons & Borders, 2010). The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand how Black first-generation college students (FGCS) from African or Caribbean immigrant families capitalized on Yosso’s (2005) community cultural wealth (CCW) to create and pursue college goals and aspirations. Participants were recent graduates from a suburban school district outside of the metropolitan area on the east coast and who were enrolled in their first or second year in college. The researcher answered the main research …
Invisible Doesn't Mean Inactive: Perspectives And Recommendations Of An Arabic Speaking Community On Parental Involvement And Cultural Responsiveness, Aziz Elabida
Theses and Dissertations
An extensive body of research has established the positive impact that parental involvement has on student academic, social, and emotional performance and well-being. These benefits are, however, not enjoyed by all students due to a string of logistical, communicative, perceptual, and cultural obstacles. The purpose of this study is to investigate the phenomenon of parental involvement as perceived and practiced by Arabic speaking parents in American public schools. This research is guided by the six typologies of Epstein’s parental involvement model (1995, 2007, and 2012) and Khalifa’s four strands of culturally responsive school leadership (2016). Through a descriptive single case …
The Lived Experiences Of Second-Generation Nigerian Male College Graduates On Educational Attainment: A Narrative Research Study, Anthony Seriki
The Lived Experiences Of Second-Generation Nigerian Male College Graduates On Educational Attainment: A Narrative Research Study, Anthony Seriki
Theses and Dissertations
This narrative research study design was conducted to explore second-generation Nigerian males' perceptions of how family heritage influences college success. The streaming of immigrants from the continent of Africa has led to an influx of foreign-born Backs in schools in the United States. Many second-generation Nigerian youths in schools nationwide are from immigrant backgrounds, partly because of the streaming of immigration from the continent of Africa. The experiences in education from Black immigrant children from Africa, specifically Nigeria, have been understudied. This study captured the first-hand account of how second-generation Nigerian males navigated the United States educational system and how …
A Case Study: Determining Factors On Student Persistence In A Community College Spanish Program, Kristin Ea Peters
A Case Study: Determining Factors On Student Persistence In A Community College Spanish Program, Kristin Ea Peters
Theses and Dissertations
World language study exposes students to more than just language; they are also exposed to different cultures. After graduating, students will be exposed to different languages and cultures in the workforce, and they must be prepared. Students often leave their language of choice after the one or two semester course requirement; it takes more than those one or two courses for students to gain the cultural and linguistic skills needed to succeed. Institutions must start to convey the importance of those skills in order produce culturally aware and global students. Student placement, student motivation, and classroom pedagogy all contribute to …
No Family Left Behind: Nontraditional Methods Of Communication As A Tool For Equitable Family Engagement, Robin Ransom
No Family Left Behind: Nontraditional Methods Of Communication As A Tool For Equitable Family Engagement, Robin Ransom
Theses and Dissertations
Legislation outlined in ESSA (2018) pushes schools to address the needs of the diverse populations within the school community as well creating a place for equitable family engagement. This study focuses on the family rather than the parent. Due to changes in family dynamics it is necessary to incorporate not just the parent but all members of a student’s household who contribute to the academic, social, and emotional well-being. In light of the immediate halt to the educational arena as the world was faced with the COVID-19 pandemic, educators and administrators were forced to think of new ways to engage …
Controlling For Developmental Language Differences In Spanish-English Learners: A Comparison Of The Ortiz Picture Vocabulary Acquisition Test And Woodcock Muñoz Language Survey-Third Edition, Amanda Garcia
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a difference in the vocabulary knowledge of Spanish-speaking English Learners (ELs) when controlling for developmental language norms. This research was essential given the multitude of literature indicating the connection between vocabulary skills and later academic success and the substantial achievement gaps between ELs and English Speakers (ESs). Considering the different normative standards in the Ortiz PVAT and WMLS III English, where the former includes bilingual, exposure-based norms, and the latter does not, this study evaluated the vocabulary knowledge of 27 Spanish-speaking ELs between the ages of 5 and 11 …
Clinical Adaptations Of Cognitive Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, And Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy As A Result Of Culture And Language, Rebecca Wade
Theses and Dissertations
Cognitive Behavioral Therapies are frequently used and highly effective; however, most of the research is conducted on Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic (WEIRD) populations who are relatively homogeneous. The present study evaluated the use and adaptations of Cognitive Therapy (CT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) based upon WEIRD status, language, and cultural values as measured by Hofstede's country comparison (2021). In a survey, therapists worldwide (n=121) reported their use and adaptation of the techniques within their therapeutic orientation. Although no significant differences were found between WEIRD or language groupings specific to CT, CBT, or …
Norm Sample Stratification And Socioeconomic Status: Examination Of Language Development Across Education And Income, Gavriel Franco
Norm Sample Stratification And Socioeconomic Status: Examination Of Language Development Across Education And Income, Gavriel Franco
Theses and Dissertations
The norm samples that are developed in Westernized countries are typically created using a routine process in test development that involves stratification of a range of independent variables. However, this method of creating norm-referenced samples may be discriminatory against individuals from low SES backgrounds since sampling across the full range of SES invariably results in an “average” that characterizes middle-SES individuals best. Because SES is generally stratified by category, according to U.S. Census demographics, any such sample developed in this manner is likely to be appropriate only for individuals within the “average” SES range. The literature contains a wealth of …
The Language Acquisition Of Ell Students: Understanding The Relationship To Teaching Model And Student Demographics, Suahuil Valerio
The Language Acquisition Of Ell Students: Understanding The Relationship To Teaching Model And Student Demographics, Suahuil Valerio
Theses and Dissertations
This quantitative study evaluated how teaching models for language acquisition—the Integrated, the Stand-Alone and the Mixed Model—and student characteristics—gender and disability status—relate to growth in language skills among ELL students. In this study, the New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test scores of the elementary school children in 3rd and 4th grades were analyzed from one school district in New York. During the 4th grade school year, ELL students received instruction via the Integrated Model, the Stand-Alone Model, or the Mixed Model, as such the 3rd grade scores served as a baseline while the 4th grade scores …
The Stereotype Threat Experiences Of Men Of Color Persisting In Community College, Robert E. Cortes
The Stereotype Threat Experiences Of Men Of Color Persisting In Community College, Robert E. Cortes
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative narrative analysis was to explore how men of color have experienced stereotype threat in their lives and used community cultural wealth to manage stereotype threat and achieve academic success while persisting at a large urban community college. Racial tensions have manifested through blatant acts of racism, discrimination, and microaggressions across college campuses, threatening students of color who are marginalized and targeted. In consideration of the success of men of color attending community colleges in the United States, there is vast inequality and inequity when comparing their graduation, persistence, and retention rates to their White counterparts. …
