Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

The purpose of this pilot study was to measure the effects of experiential learning on graduate students’ use of facilitative language techniques (FLTs) to support language development in young children from a high poverty population. Seven CSD graduate students who participated in a language seminar received direct instruction in and experiential learning with 11 FLTs. The students implemented the learned techniques during an 8-week experience in the community while providing shared book reading activities for children at a local family shelter. Results indicated that the students made significant gains in the number and type of FLTs used during book reading …

Transformative Vocabulary: Fusing Vocabulary Instruction With Citizenship Education, Thomas Broderick Feb 2022

Transformative Vocabulary: Fusing Vocabulary Instruction With Citizenship Education, Thomas Broderick

Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Literacy

This action research sought ways to maximize secondary social studies teachers’ instructional time and merge their core functions as literacy, content and social-justice instructors. Drawing on a wide literature demonstrating potent correlation between requisite vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension, this action research investigated the potential interface between explicit literacy instruction, particularly robust vocabulary instruction, and democratic citizenship, while keeping in mind the intent of the Common Core Standards. In other words: is it possible to fuse robust vocabulary instruction to achieve transformative citizenship? Data collection included multiple in-person and digital interviews with veteran K-12 teachers, administrators and university professors about …

From Hemispheric Asymmetry Through Sensorimotor Experiences To Cognitive Outcomes In Children With Cerebral Palsy, Iryna Babik Feb 2022

From Hemispheric Asymmetry Through Sensorimotor Experiences To Cognitive Outcomes In Children With Cerebral Palsy, Iryna Babik

Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Recent neuroimaging studies allowed us to explore abnormal brain structures and interhemispheric connectivity in children with cerebral palsy (CP). Behavioral researchers have long reported that children with CP exhibit suboptimal performance in different cognitive domains (e.g., receptive and expressive language skills, reading, mental imagery, spatial processing, subitizing, math, and executive functions). However, there has been very limited cross-domain research involving these two areas of scientific inquiry. To stimulate such research, this perspective paper proposes some possible neurological mechanisms involved in the cognitive delays and impairments in children with CP. Additionally, the paper examines the ways motor and sensorimotor experience during …

"The work that follows uses the written word to communicate a philosophically-engendered vision, such approximation to reflective wisdom as I have been able to develop so far. Now if reflective wisdom is what I have been claiming it to be above, then any communication of it by way of writing is at best an attempt, by way of a linguistic-meaning-bearing proxy, to communicate the author's thoughts and claims by first and foremost pointing a reader back into such experience in his/her own life and such reflection upon it as would (so it is hoped) issue in the reader's discovery of …

The goal of the annual bibliography is to offer a synthesis of the research published in the area of English language arts within the past year for RTE readers’ consideration. Abstracted citations and those featured in the “Other Related Research” sections were published, either in print or online, between June 2020 and June 2021. The bibliography is divided into nine sections, with some changes …

The Role Of Phonological And Semantic Representations In Verbal Short-Term Memory And Delayed Retention, Theresa Pham, Lisa M.D. Archibald Feb 2022

The Role Of Phonological And Semantic Representations In Verbal Short-Term Memory And Delayed Retention, Theresa Pham, Lisa M.D. Archibald

Neuroscience Institute Publications

It has been suggested that phonological representations play a central role in verbal short-term memory, but when semantic knowledge has been investigated, it has also been shown to influence verbal short-term memory. Explaining this interaction between verbal short-term memory and the linguistic system has produced different theoretical positions: whether semantic knowledge is used to redintegrate phonological traces or if there is direct activation of both phonological and semantic knowledge upon encountering a word. The present study employed a new paradigm to systematically examine phonological and semantic representations in verbal short-term memory as well as long-term impacts. Across two experiments, a …

Epileptogenic Focus Localization By Novel Analysis Of Lntracranial Eeg In The Frequency Domain, Omar Ali Alamoudi Feb 2022

Epileptogenic Focus Localization By Novel Analysis Of Lntracranial Eeg In The Frequency Domain, Omar Ali Alamoudi

Doctoral Dissertations

The gold standard for localization of the epileptogenic zone (EZ) continues to be the visual inspection of electrographic changes during seizure onset by experienced EEG readers. Development of an epileptogenic focus localization tool that can accurately delineate the EZ from the analysis of interictal (seizure-free) period is still an open question of great significance for improved diagnosis (e.g., presurgical evaluation) and treatment (e.g., surgical) outcome. We developed an EZ localization algorithm (LA) based on novel analysis of the power in a narrow frequency band of the recorded signals from the brain, that is, using a simple univariate periodogram-type power measure, …

Public Reaction To Scientific Research Via Twitter Sentiment Prediction, Murtuza Shahzad, Hamed Alhoori

NIU Bibliography

Purpose: Social media users share their ideas, thoughts, and emotions with other users. However, it is not clear how online users would respond to new research outcomes. This study aims to predict the nature of the emotions expressed by Twitter users toward scientific publications. Additionally, we investigate what features of the research articles help in such prediction. Identifying the sentiments of research articles on social media will help scientists gauge a new societal impact of their research articles. Design/methodology/approach: Several tools are used for sentiment analysis, so we applied five sentiment analysis tools to check which are suitable for capturing …

Nonignorable Missing Data, Single Index Propensity Score And Profile Synthetic Distribution Function, Xuerong Chen, Denis H. Y. Leung, Jing Qin Feb 2022

Nonignorable Missing Data, Single Index Propensity Score And Profile Synthetic Distribution Function, Xuerong Chen, Denis H. Y. Leung, Jing Qin

Research Collection School Of Economics

In missing data problems, missing not at random is difficult to handle since the response probability or propensity score is confounded with the outcome data model in the likelihood. Existing works often assume the propensity score is known up to a finite dimensional parameter. We relax this assumption and consider an unspecified single index model for the propensity score. A pseudo-likelihood based on the complete data is constructed by profiling out a synthetic distribution function that involves the unknown propensity score. The pseudo-likelihood gives asymptotically normal estimates. Simulations show the method compares favorably with existing methods.

The Impact Of Single Versus Multiple Narrating Voices In Persuasive Videos, Hannah H. Chang, Anirban Mukherjee, Amitava Chattopadhyay

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Broadcast videos often visually depict a product with one or more narrators providing the voice-over to discuss its features and benefits. Examples of broadcast videos include product videos and video advertising, which have become increasingly prevalent and important in consumer decision making in today’s marketplace (Think with Google 2019). Despite the importance of sound and voice on people’s behavior, existing research has placed relatively little emphasis on understanding the influence of narrator’s voice in effective communications (cf. Dahl 2010).

From Rumi To The Whirling Dervishes: Music, Poetry And Mysticism In The Ottoman Empire, Walter Feldman Feb 2022

From Rumi To The Whirling Dervishes: Music, Poetry And Mysticism In The Ottoman Empire, Walter Feldman

Music & Performance in Muslim Contexts

Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi, whose life and mystical poetry provided the inspiration for the Mevlevi Sufi order, is one of the world's best-known poets.

Yet the centuries-long musical tradition cultivated by the Mevleviye remains much less known. In this deeply researched book, renowned scholar Walter Feldman traces the historical development of Mevlevi music and brings to light the remarkable musical and mystical aesthetics of the Mevlevi ayin – the instrumental and vocal accompaniment to the sublime ceremony of the 'Whirling' Dervishes.

This accessible introduction to the relationship between music and the performative elements of Sufi practice presents the biographies of the …

Context, Relevance, And Labor, Wayne De Fremery, Michael K. Buckland Feb 2022

Context, Relevance, And Labor, Wayne De Fremery, Michael K. Buckland

Barowsky School of Business | Faculty Scholarship

Since information science concerns the transmission of records, it concerns context. The transmission of documents ensures their arrival in new contexts. Documents and their copies are spread across times and places. The amount of labor required to discover and retrieve relevant documents is also formulated by context. Thus, any serious consideration of communication and of information technologies quickly leads to a concern with context, relevance, and labor. Information scientists have developed many theories of context, relevance, and labor but not a framework for organizing them and describing their relationship with one another. We propose the words context and relevance can …

Eaters, Powerless By Design, Margot J. Pollans

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Food law, including traditional food safety regulation, antihunger programs, and food system worker protections, has received increased attention in recent years as a distinct field of study. Bringing together these disparate areas of law under a single lens provides an opportunity to understand the role of law in shaping what we eat (what food is produced and where it is distributed), how much we eat, and how we think about food. The food system is rife with problems--endemic hunger, worker exploitation, massive environmental externalities, and diet-related disease. Looked at in a piecemeal fashion, elements of food law appear responsive to …

Tweet, Like, Subscribe! Understanding Leadership Through Social Media Use, Michael J. Matthews, Samuel H. Matthews, Dawei (David) Waang, Thomas K. Kelemen

Management Faculty Publications

The proliferation of digital data has opened the door for a 21st-century social science that explores human relationships on an unprecedented scale. A particular area of interest is that of leader social media (SM) usage. As studies on leader SM usage have grown dramatically in the past several years, we take stock of the extant literature across various research disciplines. Within this manuscript, we contextualize leader SM usage and demonstrate how it compares to analogous concepts. We subsequently abridge relevant findings and reflect on methodological and theoretical components of the research studies identified in this review. Further, we outline the …

The Disappearing Freedom Of The Press, Ronnell Andersen Jones Feb 2022

The Disappearing Freedom Of The Press, Ronnell Andersen Jones

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

At this moment of unprecedented decline of local news and amplified attacks on the American press, attention is turning to the protection the Constitution might provide to journalism and the journalistic function. New signals that at least some Justices of the U.S. Supreme Court might be willing to rethink the core press-protecting precedent in New York Times v. Sullivan has intensified these conversations. But this scholarly dialogue appears to be taking place against a mistaken foundational assumption: that the U.S. Supreme Court continues to articulate and embrace at least some notion of freedom of the press. Despite the First Amendment …
