Using Color With Care: An Exploration Of The Application Of Psychological Color Theory Within Language Classrooms, Mackenzie Wisneski
Using Color With Care: An Exploration Of The Application Of Psychological Color Theory Within Language Classrooms, Mackenzie Wisneski
Research in the Capitol
In this ongoing project, I explore the application of color and emotion within the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Developing practices that strengthen color and emotion is beneficial for the psychological regulation of those within any environment (Güneş & Olguntürk, 2020), and is especially beneficial for emergent bilingual students. These learners are disproportionately exposed to additional academic, emotional, socio-economic, and cultural challenges both within and outside of the classroom (Benesch, 2012; Beyer, 2017; Heineke & Vera, 2021). These findings suggest that color may be used as a social-emotional tool to facilitate language acquisition and learning. …

An Other Word For It Is Us, Aca Carle
Theses and Dissertations
I am contemplating language and animacy; their enmeshment with each other and their connective fibers between beings. My art follows from the belief that animacy is inherent in matter and that language is inherent in animacy.
“Only by affirming the animateness of perceived things do we allow our words to emerge directly from the depths of our ongoing reciprocity with the world.” (Abramb 56)

Curricular Assemblages: Understanding Student Writing Knowledge (Re)Circulation Across Genres, Adam Phillips
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation proposes that the field of Writing Studies (WS) as well as writing program administrators (WPAs) should integrate quantitative methods into curricular assessment in order to improve pedagogical practices within their curricula. Through the use of the theoretical framework of assemblage theory, a theory that has been underutilized within WS, and the lens of linguistic, cultural, and substantive (LCS) language patterns, this study attempts to identify and understand student writing knowledge circulation and recirculation within one local curriculum. As well, with the incorporation of technological tools such as RAND-Lex, WPAs and WS researchers can identify granular patterns within student …

Seeing Is Believing: The Role Of The Visual Stimulus In Cognitive Knowledge Of Sound Structure, John M. Sances
Seeing Is Believing: The Role Of The Visual Stimulus In Cognitive Knowledge Of Sound Structure, John M. Sances
Linguistics ETDs
Usage-based Phonology proposes that language users’ knowledge is stored in the form of exemplars reflecting experience of language usage. Exemplars encompass all visual and auditory information perceived during a language interaction, but few studies have examined the role that visual information plays. This dissertation addresses this question through two experiments. Experiment 1 tested perceptions of rounding via the visual signal (lip protrusion) in native French speakers. Participants perceived rounding in both visual and auditory signals, suggesting they may store the visual stimulus in their exemplars. Experiment 2 tested native American English speakers learning French on perceptions of rounding using audio …

Liturgy And Musical Inculturation In A Post-Apartheid South African Catholicism, Austin Chinagorom Okigbo
Liturgy And Musical Inculturation In A Post-Apartheid South African Catholicism, Austin Chinagorom Okigbo
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
There is a developing trend within mainstream South African Churches to incorporate styles of traditional African music and cultural elements in liturgical functions. This is happening in places where such ideas were hitherto unwelcome because mission churches witnessed the denigration of indigenous African cultures by Europeans during the eras of both colonialism and apartheid. Inculturation Theology underscores the current drive for liturgical transformation. It comprises a part of Black Theology in South Africa, which developed as an intellectual framework for liberation during the time of the anti-apartheid struggles. Using the ethnographic study of the cultural mass at Emmanuel Cathedral in …

Ethnic Minorities In The People's Republic Of China, Mary Jo Benton Lee
Ethnic Minorities In The People's Republic Of China, Mary Jo Benton Lee
Great Plains Sociologist
In the People's Republic of China, the term "minority nationality" denotes a member of one of China's 55 officially recognized ethnic minority groups. Minority nationalities have traditionally been regarded as those who have cultures (particularly languages and religions) that atv distinct from the Han Chine.ie majority. This article focuses on ethnic minorities in China-their significance to the PRC as a whole, the official classification system by which the government identifies them and the history of their interaction with the majority Han population. Higher education in the PRC is discussed with an emphasis on national minority institutes. Two macro issues relating …

Yes, But...Ruminations On Discounted Membership And Reference Group Rationalizations, Scott Magnuson-Martinson, Mouraine R. Baker
Great Plains Sociologist
Reference group theory posits that people attempt to identify themselves with groups that are esteemed in order to enhance their sense of self-worth. However, it is not uncommon that actors may find themselves being identified with, or identifying with, stigmatized groups or categories. In order to avoid the personally pejorative implications of these associations, these actors often engage in various strategies that take a form similar to accounts which attempt to neutralize possible stigma. Two fundamental normalizations, disidentification and deflected stigma are presented and compared to previous articulations in the literature of stigma management.
Family Engagement And English Language Students, Megan Beuch
Family Engagement And English Language Students, Megan Beuch
Graduate Teacher Education
Families are a child’s first teacher. Preschool students are learning and developing rapidly, while becoming accustomed to new school rules and routines. Dual language learners are a growing population in the United States. As children are learning English as a second language, parents, alongside early childhood educators, play an impactful role in each child’s development. When families and teachers work together, students will see more academic, social, emotional, and linguistic success during the early years. This paper explored a multitude of qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods studies regarding dual language learners, family engagement, and the importance of fostering positive home …
The Art Of Applied Sociology Constructing An Applied Paradigm, William Du Bois
The Art Of Applied Sociology Constructing An Applied Paradigm, William Du Bois
Great Plains Sociologist
Applied Sociology requires a different paradigm than traditional scientific sociology. A framework for doing applied sociology can be formulated from a synthesis of available sociological traditions. Science is simply an agreement of people who have studied a given body of knowledge. The question becomes: where do we stake our agreement? Synergy provides the ideal core agreement for an applied sociology. Synergy is an operational definition of the Good and should become our evaluative mechanism. It is a win-win situation, between individuals, and between the person and the community. We need to re-discover the vision of sociology as social action designed …

Inflectional Morphology in Functional Grammar: Place and Function
We have presented in a previous article (cf. Dirassat n ° 8) the different mechanisms of derivative morphology. This, we have shown, is supported by the predicate formation rules which not only operate at the fund level but also produce structures: synthetic and analytical. The rules of expression (RE) Cl), for their part represent the processes that convert the underlying clause structure (SSJC) into a constituent structure (SC). This type of rule is responsible for the introduction of the different linguistic means, among others the affixes, the auxiliary verbs, the particles, the …

Some Major Problems of Modern Paremiology
Before getting to the heart of the matter, let us first make an empirical observation: in Arab societies, the recurrence of proverbial statements both at the level of oral communication and at the level of written texts is a reality that is evident. It imposes itself on it. Proverbs occupy a prominent place in Arab societies. For a very long time, the Arabs have manifested their taste for this type of concise, very expressive and full of teachings speech.

Social Claims, Ownership, Metaphor And Cross-Sex Relations: Why Women Are Property, Mark Hansel
Social Claims, Ownership, Metaphor And Cross-Sex Relations: Why Women Are Property, Mark Hansel
Great Plains Sociologist
Property is a pervasive metaphor in our society that is the source of the social meaning of social claims to such wide ranging social objects as traffic lanes and restaurant tables. These claims are attempts to appropriate temporary control of the objects. Similarly, claims to a persons' attention and claims for services are attempts to appropriate control of resources of an individual. Successful appropriation transforms resources into the temporary (metaphoric) property of the claim maker. Some claims to social resources are legitimate and others deviant. The legitimacy of social claims is in part dependent upon authority relations between persons.
The Juvenile Court: A Case In Organization Behavior, Dennis G. Stead
The Juvenile Court: A Case In Organization Behavior, Dennis G. Stead
Great Plains Sociologist
Most of the research in juvenile justice decision making has focused on outcomes, the criteria on which outcomes are based, the doctrine of parens patriae or the concept of "individualized justice." Both of these approaches lose much of the richness of organizational behavior and organizational processes to an empirical calculus that does not portray an accurate image of how juvenile justice decisions are made. These perspectives blur our vision because they conceal that decisions in juvenile court are socially produced by the varied actors and agencies in the juvenile judicial system. This report adopts a gestalt perspective of juvenile justice …

The future of work is forcing the world to adjust to a new paradigm of working. New skills will be required to create and adopt new technology and working methods. Additionally, cognitive skills, particularly creative problem-solving, will be highly sought after. The future of work paradigm has threatened many occupations but bolstered others such as engineering. Engineers must keep up to date with the technological and cognitive demands brought on by the future of work. Using an exploratory mixed-methods approach, our study sought to make sense of how engineers understand and use creative problem solving. We found significant associations …
Race, Repair, And Youth Participatory Action Research In One Rural School, Carol Thompson, Felicia Crockett
Race, Repair, And Youth Participatory Action Research In One Rural School, Carol Thompson, Felicia Crockett
The Rural Educator
This qualitative study examines the progress of a rural New Jersey school in addressing longstanding racial conflict after implementing a Youth Participatory Action Research project two years prior. Here we take up the thread as students continued to develop activities meant to increase awareness of ongoing issues, and as adults used professional development time to model best practices in managing racialized interactions. Eight teachers and staff not originally involved and nine students who had been directly involved were interviewed and a student focus group conducted. All participants agreed that progress had been made though issues around curriculum and discipline remained. …
Moving Into Critical Spaces: Making Meaning Of One Rural Educator’S Experiences Working With Latinx Immigrant Students, Stephanie Oudghiri
Moving Into Critical Spaces: Making Meaning Of One Rural Educator’S Experiences Working With Latinx Immigrant Students, Stephanie Oudghiri
The Rural Educator
This research highlights the experiences of one rural educator in a Midwestern elementary school. Initially grounded in Swanson’s middle range theory of caring (1991, 1993), the author sought to make meaning of how the participant worked with immigrant students, specifically undocumented Latinx students, through an ethic of care. As tensions emerged from classroom-based observations and interviews, the author chose to draw upon Critical Race Theory (CRT) as a way of examining how racism operates within educational spaces. Guided by Clandinin and Connelly’s (2000) narrative form, through the description (telling) and reflection (retelling), the author makes meaning of racial biases, microaggressions, …

Educators’ Perspectives On Factors Impacting Stem Achievement In Rural Indigenous Student- Serving Schools, Annmaria De Mars, Juliana Taken Alive, Maria Burns Ortiz, Zixuan Ma, Minruo Wang
The Rural Educator
This study addressed the question, “What factors do experts perceive as impacting STEM achievement of students in rural schools with predominantly Indigenous students?” A thematic analysis of interviews with 40 educators with a depth of experience identified six major themes: holistic STEM education, inclusion of local culture in STEM education, highly qualified staff, STEM curriculum and instruction, technology, and STEM funding. These themes were interrelated. Holistic education demanded more individualized curriculum and required more highly qualified staff who could adapt the curriculum and integrate technology with traditional knowledge, but these educators were harder to hire and retain due to low …

Grounded In Relationships Of Support: Indigenous Teacher Mentorship In The Rural West, Vanessa Anthony-Stevens, Iva Moss, Angela Como Jacobson, Rebekka Boysen-Taylor, Shawna Campbell-Daniels
The Rural Educator
This article explores the power of Indigenous teacher mentorship as essential to address “the change in point of view” long called for in Indigenous education. Drawing from a longitudinal, ethnographic study of an Indigenous teacher education program in a predominantly rural, high need region, we examine the basic questions: What do Indigenous master teachers uniquely bring to teacher education? In what ways do Indigenous master teachers support the development of socially, culturally, linguistically, and place-responsive teachers? Using the theoretical frameworks of Tribal Critical Race Theory (TribalCrit) and situated learning, our findings elucidate the importance of Indigenous mentorship for re-membering and …

Just Southern: Navigating The Social Construction Of A Rural Community In The Press For Educational Equity, Daniella Sutherland, Erin Mchenry-Sorber, Jacquelyn N. Willingham
The Rural Educator
Rural communities in the Southern US are shaped by a legacy of racial oppression carried out through educational systems, in tandem with contemporary policies that perpetuate the marginalization of minoritized students. In this qualitative, revelatory case study, we examine the experiences of rural, southern school leaders who are tasked with ensuring educational equity. Using critical place-based leadership and bonding/bridging theory, we examine the social construction of belonging in a rural southern community, and the implications for equity-centered educational leadership. We find the community maintains tight-knit bonding capital that is rooted in land ownership and racial exclusion, which is conceptualized as …
