Reconceptualizing Global Citizenship: Experiences From Women Who Have Studied Abroad, Jessica L. Colston
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study used self-curated photo elicitation to express students’ awareness of power, privilege, and identity. The purpose of this qualitative research was to explore how female undergraduate students interacted with their environment and conceptualized a critical understanding of global citizenship. As such, this inquiry asked: (1) To what extent do female undergraduate students from the United States who have participated in a study abroad program develop a critical understanding of global citizenship? (2) How are students’ awareness of power, privilege, and identity reflected in their documentation and narration of their experiences abroad?
Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological systems theory and transnational feminism explained …
Morphological Awareness Performance Profiles Of First Through Sixth Grade Students, Victoria Henbest
Morphological Awareness Performance Profiles Of First Through Sixth Grade Students, Victoria Henbest
Victoria S. Henbest Publications
Purpose: We examined whether diverse profiles of strengths and weaknesses would emerge when assessing different aspects of morphological awareness in first- through sixth-grade students using a recently developed standardized test, the Morphological Awareness Test for Reading and Spelling (MATRS; Apel et al., 2021).
Method: Four thousand fifty-nine first- through sixth-grade students completed the eight morphological awareness tasks of the MATRS. The eight tasks represent the multiple ways that morphological awareness impacts both spoken and written language skills for the English language. Exploratory finite mixture models estimated the number of latent subgroups that best reflected heterogeneity in task-level performance by grade …

Iron Supplementation During The First Trimester Of Pregnancy After A National Change Of Recommendation: A Danish Cross-Sectional Study, Lb Løvschal, S Høgh, Thomas Bergholt, Kate Maslin, Jill Shawe, Hanne K. Hegaard, Wolff Mg De
School of Nursing and Midwifery
Abstract In 2013, the Danish Health Authorities recommended a change in prophylactic iron supplementation to 40–50 mg/d from gestational week 10. Hence, the aims of the present study were (1) to estimate the prevalence of women who follow the Danish recommendation on iron supplementation during the last 3 weeks of the first trimester of pregnancy and (2) to identify potential sociodemographic, reproductive and health-related pre-pregnancy predictors for iron supplementation during the first trimester. We conducted a cross-sectional study with data from the hospital-based Copenhagen Pregnancy Cohort. Characteristics were analysed by descriptive statistics and multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to …

Purpose: Cluttering is a fluency disorder that has been noted clinically in individuals with fragile X syndrome (FXS). Yet, cluttering has not been systematically characterized in this population, hindering identification and intervention efforts. This study examined the rates of cluttering in male young adults with FXS using expert clinical opinion, the alignment between expert clinical opinion and objectively quantified features of cluttering from language transcripts, and the association between cluttering and aspects of the FXS phenotype.
Method: Thirty-six men with FXS (aged 18-26 years; M = 22, SD = 2.35) contributed language samples and completed measures of nonverbal cognition, autism …

Azusa Street And The Lost Doctrine Of Humility, Michael Blythe
Azusa Street And The Lost Doctrine Of Humility, Michael Blythe
Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology
This article delves into original source material from the Azusa Street Revival to rekindle an awareness of the heavy emphasis that participants placed on humility as a deep and vibrant experience, both as a precondition for receiving the fullness of the Spirit and as an ongoing Pentecostal encounter. Re-lighting the Pentecostal fire is necessary to respond to the struggles of the movement in North America where disillusionment with “triumphalism” has created an uncertain future. Voices from the past and present echo the imperative that the Holy Spirit experience should be balanced by personal sacrifice. A revival of deep self surrender …

Characteristics Of The Roles Of Mothers Of Children With Intellectual Disabilities As A Basis For Their Individual Therapy, Marcin Bialas
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Background: Women enjoy a variety of social roles during their lives. Among the commonly known ones, which include e.g. the roles of wives and mothers, there are also those that radically change the scenario of one’s past life. These include the role of mothers of children with intellectual disabilities. After all, the hardships associated with caring for them and with their upbringing, influence their mothers' perception of the world, change the existing family and professional social relations, determine the choice of values, and limit or block the goals set to date. It seemed interesting to the author of the study …

Serving The Entire Community: How The Multnomah County Library Ensures A Welcoming, Safe Space For All, Kathi Inman Berens
English Faculty Publications and Presentations
In the spring of 2020, the Multnomah County Library (Oregon) faced a host of issues impacting libraries across the nation: How to serve the community during a historic pandemic that saw schools and libraries close for an extended period? And how to respond to a racial and social justice awakening that requires systemic change?
Like many libraries across the nation, MCL librarians have been quick to meet their community’s needs. Following the murder of George Floyd by a white police officer in Minneapolis, for example, the library licensed more e-books and digital audiobooks about white supremacy and racial justice and …

An electrical device that transforms the electricity into the waves of radio and vice versa is termed the antenna. Its main deployment is in the transmitter and receiver of the antenna. While transmission, the transmitter of radio at the extremities of the antenna furnishes the electricity which oscillates at the frequency of radio wave and energy is released as current as em waves. Some of the voltage is formed from the em wave that is invaded at the point of receiving to amplify the receiver. This study focuses on the analysis of the satellite system to aid in mobile antenna …

Causes Of Expansion Of Second Modifiers In The Arabic Sentence Structure, Hamdi Jabali
Hebron University Research Journal-B (Humanities) - (مجلة جامعة الخليل للبحوث- ب (العلوم الانسانيه
This study aims at identifying the various causes of expansion of second constituents of the Arabic sentence structure in both Arabic poetry and prose through analyzing the relationship between these modifiers and the first that are used before them at a sentence level in order to find out the sound structures and their meanings. It also aims to identify the effect of expansion on the construction of the syntactic theory. Expansion is basically centered on structure enlargement and flexibility in terms of building it despite the fact that it is against the norms and principles that have been used in …

Teaching Arabic Grammar In The Moroccan Textbook: Problems And Solutions, Abdellah Karym
Hebron University Research Journal-B (Humanities) - (مجلة جامعة الخليل للبحوث- ب (العلوم الانسانيه
Many national and international reports revealed that the successive Moroccan educational reforms failed to achieve their target goals. One key aspect of this failure manifests in the Arabic grammar teaching in the Moroccan textbook which negatively impacts the student’s performance in Arabic. This study aims to investigate problems in teaching Arabic grammar in the Moroccan textbook. It uses content analysis as a descriptive approach to investigate the methodology used in teaching Arabic grammar and to monitor the inconsistencies it incorporates. Besides, this study conducts a field survey by interrogating a group of experienced Arabic teachers to uncover the difficulties they …

Decoding the 1920s: A Reader for Advanced Learners of Russian was published by the Portland State University Open Access initiative in 2021. The 1920s is a major part of the Russian literary canon but is notoriously difficult for American students to read in the original, due both to its stylistic complexity and its hidden historical, political and cultural references. And yet, the period is crucial for understanding Russia – not only in the Soviet period, but also today. The 1920s and 1930s were the period when “The New Soviet Person” emerged, with its Soviet mentality. Recent attempts to glamorize the …
The Urgency For A Transnational Feminist Methodology: An Inclusive Analytical Framework For Neocolonialism And Globalization, Sanam Shahmiri
The Urgency For A Transnational Feminist Methodology: An Inclusive Analytical Framework For Neocolonialism And Globalization, Sanam Shahmiri
Theses and Dissertations
I propose a methodology of literary study to be used in a wide range of disciplines and genres. While there have been numerous applications of postcolonial theory to the analysis of texts produced before, during, and after colonization, this transnational feminist methodology (TFM) is updated or reinvented to include discussions of the psychological and material ramifications of neocolonialism and neo-imperialism, especially about the immigrant experience—in particular, the perspective of children of immigrants living in diasporic communities. The work’s focus on postcolonial feminism is complicated by looking at gender, race, trans-nationality, and other identity factors that shape the work of writers …

The Forgotten Epidemic: Identification Of Mtbc In The Neolithic Trypillia Of Verteba Cave, Ukraine, Tre Blohm
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Microorganisms have plagued humankind for millennia and frequently participate in an evolutionary arms race against their hosts. Diseases from various microorganisms have crippled entire countries or led to massive population declines in recent history. However, much is unknown about epidemiology in ancient times. My project will be the first comprehensive paleoepidemiological approach to understand disease across populations in Europe during the Neolithic era (7000-1700BC). The Neolithic was one of the most profound transformations in human history, both culturally and biologically. Massive migrations, formations of the earliest settlements in Europe, and introduction of agriculture and pastoralism led to new environments for …

When the first Europeans arrived off Florida’s coasts the land was not uninhabited virgin territory but was occupied by many distinct peoples organized into flourishing, complex, chiefdom-level societies of a non-egalitarian nature. Those societies included the Calusa of the Gulf coast from the Charlotte Harbor area southward to the tip of the Florida peninsula; Tocobaga and others who occupied the shores of Tampa Bay and their hinterland; Ais of the Indian River area and its hinterland; various autonomous Timucua-speaking groups of south Georgia and north Florida from the east coast westward to the Aucilla, Withlacoochee, and Oklawaha rivers; Apalachee whose …

The general commissioner for the Franciscan missions in Florida, Friar Luis Gerónimo de Oré, arrived in St. Augustine in 1614 where he conducted a brief ecclesiastical inspection before returning to Cuba. Oré came again to Florida in late 1616, reaching St. Augustine on November 6. Armed with powers of visitation and confirmation, he inspected the Franciscan missions in the area and confirmed hundreds of converts. He also presided over the First General Chapter Meeting of the Franciscan Order in the province. During his Florida travels, Oré collected reports on earlier attempts of conversion, and before returning to Europe he compiled …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Abstract
Personnel commitment to their organisations on an emotional, normative, and long-term basis is crucial to achieving organisational goals and objectives. Working circumstances for employees in any business, particularly university libraries are crucial to achieving these levels of dedication. The impact of the work environment on the affective, normative, and long-term commitments of library staff in Nigeria's South-West area was investigated in this paper. A total of 427 people participated in the study. The findings revealed that the work environment is related to affective commitment (R2 =.014; p.05), normative commitment (R2 =.004; p.05), continuance commitment (R2 =.033; p.05), and the …
Plain Language Or Anything But?, Jennifer F. Drayton, Averil Coxhead
Plain Language Or Anything But?, Jennifer F. Drayton, Averil Coxhead
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
This paper focuses on what language needs to be used in emergencies by air traffic controllers based on an investigation of plain language definitions and descriptions in International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) publications and in the beliefs of nine air traffic controllers in the United Arab Emirates. The aim of the study is pedagogical, in that it is important to establish what language trainee air traffic controllers need to use during emergencies, but there is little in the way of course books or materials that can inform course development. Findings suggest there are contradictions in the ICAO documentation, and differences …

Shared Book Reading Experiences For Young Children Who Use Augmentative And Alternative Communication ( Aac ) Systems, Braelyn Nicole Wence
Theses and Dissertations
Shared book reading is an evidence-based interactive literacy activity that promotes development of oral language and emergent literacy skills in young children; however, literature regarding best practices for parents of children with developmental disabilities under the age of five years, specifically those with complex communication needs, is severely limited. In this descriptive study, the parent and child behaviors of five families with children between 35-48 months who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems were coded and analyzed during parent-child shared book reading interactions. Three families had previous training on AAC use during shared book reading; two families did not …

In 2000, South Africa’s president Thabo Mbeki stated that the twenty-first century would be the “Century of Africa.” Indeed I, like many, believe that Africa is a continent full of promise, rich cultural heritage, blessed with a wealth of natural resources, and poised to become a hub of innovation and progress. Recently, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken remarked that Africa is headed toward becoming one of the world’s most important economic regions, and that it will have a hand in shaping in the future of the world. Recent advances have been made in solar power, the “green tech” industry working …
